Final Outcomes
My final outcomes are 3 posters displaying the story of the soucouyant. I add a paper-like texture to the images to give the impression of a printed comic.
Conclusion-
For the start to see my final outcomes, I definitely would have surprised myself, initially wanting to create a lino print book but I think having this idea in my head was limiting me at the beginning and once I let go of the idea I was able to gain my creativity back and pushed myself to illustration. This project was really hard for me having to create my own design brief and narrow down and focus on one idea proved difficult but I'm glad I've gone through the process to trust my instincts I worked outside my comfort zone in a style I haven't done before and I am really pleased with the outcomes.

I started to try and develop an illustration style by playing with line weights and colour, The style I preferred was with a thin line weight similar to the style of Dave Gibbons and Joelle Jones. I added the halftone dot back to the design and added a shadow.

Rethinking my Ideas
As the project developed I found that a printed book wasn’t the best way to show this story. Using more images to tell the story was more successful and larger amounts of text detracted from the images.

(black panter comic book)
I looked back at Afrofuturism which was my inspiration from the beginning and was inspired by black comic books and illustrations.
Turning my project into a more image-based design I believe will allow the story to come to life, it will give the Soucouyant a visual identity and be understandable to people who have never heard of the story before.

sophy hollington
Sophy is a British illustrator that specializes in risograph and linoprint designs her work often focuses around folklore and mysticism design
Sophy’s style caught my eye her bold outlines and use of colour interested me the most as well
as her use of type alongside her illustrations. Her illustration often have a comedic feel with their funny expressions and distorted shapes.
I was really inspired by Sophy’s work and the way in which she used both hand-printed and digital methods to achieve her final looks. She prints her work backwards and later flips and adds colour in Photoshop.

mami wata project
Mami wata or the mother of water has African origins and was brought to the Caribbean during the slave trade. She is described as having a mermaid like tail and a woman’s body and is often wrapped in a snake. Mami Wata symbolises many aspects of life including good fortune, wealth, and healing but also the threat of destruction, she is also known as the protector of mothers.
Mami Wata (or how to know a goddess when you see one) by Allison Saar is part of a large project which explores the relationship between water and the African culture
I was really drawn to this project and it felt like it was fished out of the sea itself. The collection of woodcut prints and poetry display was an interesting way of presenting the story of Mami Wata.
