Amik
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amik was the mascot of the 1976 Summer Olympics. In the Algonquin language, amik means "beaver." A national competition was held to name it. The beaver or "amik" was chosen as mascot because it is an animal strongly associated with Canada, the country where the games were held.
I don’t really like Amik cos its simplistic to the point of boring and the point of the mascots is to attract people, not bore them.

Soohorang
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soohorang is the official mascot of the 2018 Winter Olympics which took place in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, in South Korea. Soohorang took its motif from the white tiger, known as "baekho" in Korean, which is considered to be Korea’s sacred guardian animal. Its colour is also indicative of the snow and ice of winter sports. Tigers have long been a notable aspect of Korean folklore and culture. Baekho, the white tiger, is described in myths and narratives as a divine imaginary animal that watches over the mountains and nature. A cultural symbol for prosperity and protection, Baekho is revered as a god who cares for humanity, praying for the peace and well-being of the village in Korean folklore, while maintaining the continuity of Hodori which was the mascot of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. It has also been noted that Baekho is in harmony with the Winter Games that take place in "the white fields of snow".
I like the contrasting colours that go all the way down its body.

Vinicius
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vinicius is the olympic mascot for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He is a mix of all the animals that you can find in brazil. Vinicius has the agility of cat, the balancing skills of a monkey and the grace of a bird. He is able to stretch out his arms and legs as long as he wants, and he has a heightened sense of smell and hearing. When creating him, his designers drew inspiration from pop culture as well as video game and cartoon characters.
I like all of the colours on Vinicius as they are all bright and vibrant and makes it stand out very well.

Domo-Kun
Tumblr media
Is the official mascot of Japan's public broadcaster NHK, appearing in several 30-second stop-motion interstitial sketches shown as station identification during shows. Domo-kun first appeared in short stop-motion sketches on December 22, 1998 to mark the 10th anniversary of NHK's satellite broadcasting. The name "Domo" was acquired during the second episode of his show, in which a TV announcer said "dōmo, konnichiwa" ,  which is a greeting that can be translated as "Well, hello there!", but which can also be interpreted as "Hello, Domo", and thus is a convenient pun. The kun suffix on "Domo-kun", the name used to describe the character in the Japanese versions, is a Japanese honorific often used with young males.
I like Domo-Kun because it is really simple and i like the colour of it,

Barii-san
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barii-san is the mascot of Imabari city, Ehime prefecture, on the Shikoku island, and was created to be a cute guide of the city. Barii-san is a chicken because the main food specialty of the city is a type of yakitori. ( yakitoti is a japanese type of skewered chicken.) He wears a haramaki abdomen wrap made of cotton towel, which is the main product of the city, Imabari having the largest towel production in Japan, and his diadem is actually an invitation to visit the spectacular Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge. Also, Barii-san holds in his hand a boat-shaped wallet, a hint to the local Imabari Shipbuilding, the largest ship builder in Japan.
I like how round his body is.

Melon Kuma
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Melon Kuma is one of the more memorable regional mascots is and is from from Yubari City in Hokkaido. To represent a town best known for bears and melons, he’s literally a bear with a melon for a head. But instead of a cute style bear, the designers gave Melon Kuma all of a wild bear’s most terrifying features.
i like it cos its a bear and thats what i want to base my mascot off of.
It a darker colour, which i like.

My design process for my mascot.
Research- i looked at other mascots from japan and decided what features i like from then and kept them in mind to integrate then in my own mascot. I also looked at some mascots from random other countries and also some Olympic ones as well.
Ideas and mood boards- i then made a 2 mood boards and put some mascots that i like the look of and took some of there details that i wouldnt mind putting in my own design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(all of these designs are very very simple and i like that and will try something like this for my own mascot as it will make it very easy on myself)
The process of making the model- in maya i got a sphere and re sized it to make it bigger, then added a ball to the top of the sphere to make a head( i put the ball halfway through the sphere so you can only see half of it). I then added 2 more spheres to the bottom and then chanced the shape slightly so it looks my like a oval shape and these are the legs. I then added one last sphere and then used the multi cut tool so then i can extend and change the direction of the the model to whatever i like and this was then used to make the tail.
Tumblr media
I then imported it into mudbox and then projection painted the face on.

Normal maps
Normal maps are a technique widely used to represent a highly detailed surface mesh using a more simplified low polygon count version of the mesh.A normal map is a 2D rgb image that records the surface normal information for a mesh by using the red, green, blue color channels to record the X, Y, Z normal vector data. Each pixel in the rgb image records the normal direction data and is used to determine lighting and shading on the low resolution surface when it is rendered.

Mudbox tools
Sculpt- this is what you can use to move larger things around and to put large bulges in places.
Smooth- you use this to remove large lines, features or wrinkles that are not wanted.
relax- Averages vertices on the surface without affecting its original shape.
grab- Selects and moves vertices based on the distance and the direction you drag. Useful for making subtle adjustments to the form of the model.
pinch- Pulls vertices in towards the center of the tool cursor. Useful for more sharply defining an existing crease.
flatten- Levels affected vertices by moving them toward a common plane.
foamy- Similar to the Sculpt tool but with a softer feel. Useful for designing initial forms, not intended for detail work.
spray- Used mainly for detailing surfaces, intended for use with stamps. The image is stamped along the stroke in a random fashion.
repeat- Useful for creating patterns on a surface. For example, rivets on the wing of an airplane, zipper effects.
imprint- Presses or imprints a stamp image into the surface. Dragging on the mesh positions and scales the stamp.
wax- Builds up areas on a model, adding or removing material from the model surface, much like working with clay or wax.
scrape- Useful for minimizing or removing protruding features.
fill- Fills in cavities on the model surface by calculating a plane, then pulling vertices under the plane towards that plane.
knife- Cuts fine strokes into a surface.
smear- Moves vertices in a direction that is tangent to their original position on the surface in the direction you stroke.
bulge- Displaces the region beneath the tool by moving each affected vertex along its own normal to create a bulge effect.
amplify- pposite of the Flatten tool. Useful for designing, detailing, and further accentuating existing differences in the affected vertices in relation to each other by moving them away from a common plane.
remesh- Increases or decreases the resolution of the mesh surface as you stroke over it. Use this to add or remove detail in specific areas of your mesh.
reduce- Decreases the resolution of the mesh as you brush. This lets you lessen the density of the mesh in areas that do not need heavy detail.
refine- Increases the resolution of your mesh so you can work in greater detail.
freeze- Locks affected vertices so they cannot be modified while you sculpt.
mask- lets you paint opacity values on sculpted regions to non-destructively hide the sculpting on a layer. Works only on sculpt layers, not on the base subdivision level for the model.
erase- Removes sculpting from layers. Any sculpting on the original base mesh remains unaffected.
I used the Sculpt, wax, imprint, relax and smooth tools when making my kaiju and feel like it went somewhat well.

My Mascot
i decided i wanted to keep my mascot simplistic as i like that look from other examples of mascots. its basically a domo bear but with big round ears and a tail. i made my mascot in Maya, i started with a cylinder shape and added a ball as a head then added 2 more cylinders and then elongated then to use as legs. to make my ears i used a donut shape ring then put 2 flat planed in side the whole to cover it up then put one on either side of its head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my Mascot. I Made it simplistic in shape and features as well as the face and hair. i used maya to make the actual model then went into mudbox and projection painted the face and regular painted the hair on.
i did the face freehand the first time and didn't really like it as it was really uneven and the lines weren't very straight and i didn't like it, so i went into photoshop and made the face out of shapes and made sure they are all straight and all align up and symmetrical
