I have mixed feelings about Overwatch 2...

Like, yes, I want more lore. Gimme the fucking lore, blizzard!

But I’m also scared that they will fuck it up.

Im kind of hoping that they take the opportunity to do a good long look at what (little) story that have so far and see what needs fixing (in any way- timeline wise - logic wise - etc) and then do one last retcon (if they need it).

Just do it Blizzard.

Lock your writers in a goddamn room and tell them they won’t be allowed out until they have :

1.) a functioning timeline

2.) ensured each character HAS lore

A.) at least some of the lore needs to be stand alone to other characters (no more Genji syndrome- where Hanzo, Mercy and Zenyatta exist largely exist to beef up Genjis already mammoth story)

B.) make sure that each character CAN be given lore (apparently a large part of why Zenyatta hasn’t had any yet is that ALL of his abilities in game don’t actually exist in the lore, so his cinematic would be boring as balls action wise )

C.) make sure that the relationships you give the characters (familial, friendship, romantic) are ones that would make sense. Gency shippers will hate the next sentences: Mercy should not be in a relationship with Genji unless he gets another doctor to take care of him. It is unethical and since Mercy is built up to the the ethical doctor (unlike Moira) she shouldn’t be dating anyone from the team unless they can go to another doctor for care. Unless they are going to make that slip in ethics a plot point (but I doubt they will).

3.) a clear roadmap of where the story is fucking going with a plan on how it will be released. Right now it’s been sitting in neutral with tiny start-stops in progression for literally years. I feel like this way of releasing lore has pissed off more people than it has kept people interested in it. Do it on a regular basis, Jfc Jeff.

4.) make sure that the story is actually interesting? (This is probably more of a personal point- I’m kind of convinced that they will make Mercy incapable of doing wrong and Moira a straight villain- they could do a nuanced exploration of morality and it isn’t always black and white but I doubt they will)

If they need to do one last retcon to get everything in order so we can get this fucking party started, then I’m ok with that.

But please.

Blizzard.

Do it well.

Do it right.

I am waiting for that crisp September day when I can come home from school on a rainy afternoon and sit down to a marathon of Hocus Pocus with an apple cider donut, a cup of pumpkin spice hot chocolate, and a warm and happy soul. Autumn means the world to me. It is the loveliest, most comforting season of them all and I cannot wait for it to return.
