Content Creation v. Fic Writing

I am seeing a trend within the fic writer community that makes me very sad. It’s where a lot of really talented fic writers are now sliding into content creator mindset over that of fic writer mindset. This obligation to participate in every writing challenge, do all the monthly prompts, and as a result fic writers are creating fics that have no life. These type of writing challenges are a trap. It’s just content for the sake of content. There is nothing wrong with content creation and content creators, the problem is that you can either be a fic writer or a content creator. You cannot be both. (I know that’s contrary but stick with me.)

So as a result you can either write the fics you want to write, tell the stories you need to tell- or you write fics that cater to the audience in order to have interaction. You put on a show, and as a result those stories have no heart or life within them they are just words on a page. They become overwritten trope geared one shots that do ‘good’ for the day they are posted but never see interaction outside of that time. Which means that now in order to have interactions the writer has to churn out content they don’t love to fill the void that capitalism in fandom has created. At this point, you have stepped out of fic writer territory and have become a full time content creator (one who cannot be paid for their efforts). The content of choice is fanfic, that is written, and maybe liked, but never truly loved.

I’ve been seeing the take that readers give up on fics too quickly nowadays a lot here lately- and sadly that’s very true, if things are not churning out updates, monthly, weekly, and or daily even the audience dies. This is a direct result of fic writers switching to content creator mindset. It’s no longer about telling a story, it has become about writing fics that gain notoriety. Or writing so much in excess that you as an author are notable within whatever fandom community you participate in. It’s easy to have written all of someone’s favorite fics if you write in abundance for your fandom. 

Of course the counter argument here is that what’s wrong with wanting to be popular? Well, frankly, a lot of things. If popularity is your only goal. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to be appreciate for the works you create. There is nothing wrong with wanting interaction with your flics the problem arises when that is the only reason you are writing. Fic writing is not a job, you cannot get paid for it (seriously, fic writers cannot be paid), and when fic writers become content creators for fanfic - fic writing is now a chore. And creative burnout it more likely to occur than ever before, fics will go fully abandoned because the writer lost all drive.

Writing fanfiction, and writing in general, is already hard enough. Adding content creation to the mix is an unnecessary stressor. Fanfiction does not need to be treated like content, it needs to be treated like every other facet of storytelling. The moment that stories, and storytelling becomes nothing more than just content- the art dies. Content is created to be palatable to most people, it is not made for longevity. Stories are created to be considered and contemplated for years to come. They should have life beyond their publishing date. 

So fanfic that is created to be content will never survive, and fic writers who write for the sake of putting out content will never be satisfied with what they are creating. They will never truly love the stories they’re telling. Because at the end of the day they weren’t really stories the writer wanted to tell. They were just more content.

ok so you know how kids hold up pictures like these before school/nhl media day at camp ? Anyway here is my poorly made fanfic/fandom version of this. Tag and share! blank template and more under the cut lol

Tagging the fic creators/more thoughts on my most favorite fics of this summer:

1.) cruel summer by @moondoggiestyle was just recently published and is already on an all time list for me. A r63 au that is wholly standalone from hockey and literally reads like a summer novel that you would get popsicle juice on when you're reading it by the lake and the pages get kind of bent because when your family was driving to your uncles for the Fourth your brother insisted on having the windows down and your mom was too crabby to argue with him. Its also LONNG so buckle down somewhere in the dying summer sun and live vicariously though poor Rutger living and learning

2.) way too bright for me by @workingforitallthetime is not a "summery" fic but I did read it this summer so that counts. A nice break from the other summery fics/media featuring a fun vampire Johnny. A fun twist of fantasy that doesn't involve the creature aspect of the character being the entire fic. Features a desperately cute ODR date if you need any more convincing.

3.) crazy, stupid, senior year by @zeegras/ @theaawrites was a. not posted this summer and b. literally takes place during school, the entire premise of the fic, and yet. The pressure of things ending and realizing that as your time somewhere comes at a close, you didn't experience all the fun things you thought you didn't want until it's almost too late, and you thought you wouldn't feel so strongly about whether you did or didn't experience them?? I am describing both summer and this fic, so there its a summer fic.

In general, I did not read as much fic this summer as I normally do/read fic from other fandoms, but all that did was make me exited for what is to come this year!! This summer I also noticed a lot of creators posting more "shorts" on tumblr, so gander down a couple of users to find some of that!

As noted above, I am so so so excited for the narratives to come, both unexpected as we had last year as well as anticipated ones. I can't wait for more content to be available to inspire brain rot in me!

update on my life before the cut:

started school a week ago which is why I have been scarce on both blogs lately! I think this year will be more simple but not anymore easy

haven't finished my fic yet! I'm thinking about giving up and trying to pawn it off on someone but I also think I am too selfish or proud to do it. I have not really been in the writing spirit at all lately but hopefully I get reinspired

I am now also kind of high and lonesome; my closest family is my brother and he is a couple of hours away from me and also travels a lot for work, so I am working on being ok with being lonely lol

I think I am finally going to pony up and book a couple of tattoos for myself-I have been in a weird place with my body in a journey to be more neutral to myself so I have been kind of avoiding this

In all honestly, I will probably be similarly active as I have been these last few weeks until season starts and there is more engagement!
