The entire game I was looking forward to Ellie getting her revenge and Abby getting killed. That feeling completely went away when I saw her hanging on that pilar, nearly starved to death, and when released all she cared about was saving that little boy; the same way that Joel did anything and gave everything to save Ellie.

Seeing both of these two characters so miserable and broken down, lose everything they had and loved was painful to watch.

What I still can't get over is that Ellie draws an owl in her diary above the words "All the promises at sundown, I meant them like the rest." because that's what she remembers from their last conversation—Joel, drinking coffee from his favorite owl mug. She remembered this little detail because it was so comforting to talk to him about casual things again. They used to do that a lot before they drifted apart. She missed it so much, whether she liked to admit it to herself or not. The conversation meant so much to her that she wouldn't forget about him talking to her about something as insignificant as coffee.

Then later, when she goes in his closet, she purposefully searches for one specific jacket before burying her face in it and remembering him—the jacket he's been wearing the night all her promises to him were meant like the rest. 

She needed to be reminded of the last time she stood next to him, wishing she would have hugged him right there and then.

After Ellie kills David, Joel holds her close as they get up and are about to leave and there's this tiny moment where he looks behind her for a brief second to have a look at what she has done to the man he was after knowing that he would've done exactly the same. Except she's a kid. She's a little girl. She shouldn't know what this feels like.

In this moment, Joel fully realizes what Ellie must have gone through and how unbelievably brave and tough she is. Having her clinging to him tighly and crying, he fully realizes that she went out of her way to save his life, and in that instant, he regrets everything he said to her back at the farm house, and from this time on, you can see that he decided to make his life's mission to dedicate his all to this girl.

Calling her baby girl, a loving term he had previously only called his own daughter, almost feels like it's the absolute peak of the development of their relationship. This is a perfect point to reach before the end of a game as in this moment he's finally faced the death of his daughter and truly taken on Ellie as his own.

Ellie: "Can you walk?" Joel: *on the verge of dying* "Yes." Ellie: "THEN FUCKING WALK!"

The scene where Ellie hacks David's face into little pieces and then comes Joel to hug her and comfort her.

There's this moment when everything goes quiet for a moment except for the music playing in the background where Joel keeps comforting her with words and we see his lips moving, but we no longer hear what he's actually saying to her.

And I know it's supposed to be up for interpretation, but I've spent an embarrassing amount of time watching the clip trying to see what he is saying regardless. And it might not be exactly it, because the camera keeps moving and is not settled just on his lips, but I think that what he's saying to her is something like

"Look at me." he says before she lifts her sad eyes on him.

"I'm never going to let anyone touch(hurt) you again, okay? Okay?"

Maybe the number of times I've watched the clip has damaged my brain at some point and I'm just being delusional here, but I'm really willing to go with this. As long as it's comforting for Ellie, I'm in. Must be it, must be.

You know what, I keep thinking about these moments so much. Joel is a present dad, he is emotionally present for Sarah, I know we don't have a lot to go on about , but this moments keeps popping up in my mind cause look how happy she is cuddeling with her dad, and it screams to me how soft of a dad he is. When Ellie becomes this physically comfortable with him, she's resting her hand on his arm, just because. Like do you realize how gentle he is with her for her to be this comfortable, she grew up around violent soldiers, and knows that Joel is a violent one when they meet, and she feels so safe with him. Like I know I don't make sense and it's all been said before, but it just punches me in the heart, cause all this man wants to do is raise and nurture, he wants a quiet happy warm life, he is a family guy. And whats gutwrenching about that is piece by piece his family and his loved one's got taken away, his wife, Sarah, Tess, Tommy, Bill and Frank, and then nearly Ellie. Like that man is a soft teddy bear at heart, I could see him just coming and going and giving Ellie a kiss on her head or a hug as goodmorning. I know that man just loveeeees to spend time with his kids. He has the weakest spot for kids. I wanna see him embrace his dad side in Jackson so freaking badly, well atleast I have the fics I can console myself with them

Okay, so what I love about the whole 'Ellie saves Joel' scene is this LITTLE moment right here; this little BREATH before she's ready to go to see what's downstairs. Knowing he's there, almost unconscious… she just can't face it yet. She needs a minute. She needs to pluck up all the courage in her to see him like this. Because everytime she sees him lying there, so lifeless, it's when she realizes how easily she could lose him.

And even for players, it would have been a while now since they've seen Joel, so we experience the whole sequence through Ellie's eyes, and it's just so soul-aching. It pains us because we know how vulnerable Ellie is without Joel in a world like this one, and for the first time we witness Joel and Ellie's roles being switched to where now it's the protected taking care of the protector, and there is nothing more poetic than this.

Plus, in this scene, we get to understand that Ellie has not only been intuitive from the start when we notice she has already stiched him up, but she also proves just how ingenious and able she really is. Not many 14 year olds growing up in a post-apocalyptic world would have known they had to remove air from a syringe before they used it. And here she is, taking care of Joel like it is the only thing she knows how to do.

Not even get me started on how sweet and heartwarming the moment of them falling asleep next to each other is. Again, Ellie watching over Joel, being there for him. Not knowing what's gonna happen next. Whether he'll make it or not. Whether she'll end up alone or not. All she cares about now is being near him.

And then, when David's group of men shows up, Ellie's quick to decide what she needs to do. Even though she's just a 14 year old girl, alone, and basically prey to those dangerous men… she's showing us (again) just how much she's willing to put herself on the line to get them away from Joel. If I ever fell in love with Ellie, it was in this moment.
