Multiple sources confirmed that when they called u.s. figure skating or PSA for help with a less-than-ethical coach, they were talked out of making an official complaint. “A grievance isn’t something you really want to do.” “Think long and hard before you do anything, it could really hurt your skater. She might not be able to get a coach in town.” “It’s a hard process you probably don’t want to go through.”

If you leave a coach over a bad situation, there is a real good chance that the coach will tell the other coaches that the skater or the parent did something negative. Even if the coach is 100% at fault, the other coaches will most likely believe the at-fault coach over a parent. It can lead to having to switch rinks or clubs. Just be prepared for the worst if your coaching relationship goes sour.

A coach stood in the lobby telling people that a particular skater was so bad that the skater should just quit. Any coach who says skaters should quit, probably shouldn’t be a coach.

Coaches will say they like ISI better. Screw that. There shouldn’t be two organizations and two sets of testing. Take the good parts of ISI and move it to USFSA.

Sometimes coaches and skater moms are both part of the problem. When coaches and moms gang up on skaters they are bullying and inflicting emotional abuse. Report the coach and mom to SafeSport, USFSA, ISI and PSA. Demand results and make them accountable.

Do skaters really know when they walk into an ISI rink vs an USFSA rink? Do they know that an ISI FS test isn’t going to get them towards their National or Olympic dreams? What other Olympic sports have to multiple testing organizations?

It is fairly easy to become a USFSA coach. Pay some money, pass the background check, take some online classes. When a new skater parent enters the scene and they don’t know anything about anything, it is really easy to end up with a coach who doesn’t really know what they are doing or is just plain lazy. The best thing you can do is look over the curriculum, set concrete goals and if they are not met in a reasonable amount of time. move on.
