The pile is hiding a percentage of the forms surfaces whereas when they are laid out the surface characteristics are able to be seen more clearly
I think they are working well with the image.
The image has been printed on oldies smooth pearl paper which is shiny and echoes the surface of the image and the surface of the forms.

Building up layers of spray paint on the forms. I have applied 3 coats so far and will keep going until they are consistently white all over.
I’m allowing 1 hour in between coats of paint
The forms have been sanded and 3 coats of primer was sprayed on before I began to spray paint them.
I may patch test a clear gloss finish coat to see if that adds anything to how the forms are read. Though this may not be necessary.

Sanding back the forms... after spray painting them I noticed a lot of bumps, air bubbles and imperfections.
These are distracting and become more of a focus than the forms overall qualities and the sculptures’ message.
I have decided to sand these bumps etc. back to make the forms as smooth and bump free as I can physically achieve, so that when I paint them again their finish is a lot more consistent, even and ‘polished’.
Because it is difficult sanding for long hours, I just have spent the full day sanding as much as I can, and am going to move on to painting them tomorrow. I will have to see how they look after the painting is complete and be accepting of their outcome....their surfaces may still be bumpy, though, I am hoping that it they look less man made and more natural due to how I have sanded them

To avoid the forms from sticking to the news paper I tested placing them on wooden rods to set after I coated them in resin. This, however, did not work and the resin stuck to the wood. Which does make sense in hind sight...
I have been advised to use a plastic sheet such as tarpaulin or plastic garden bed sheet to avoid the sticking. I have purchased a plastic garden bed sheet today and re arranged my set up into a way which will help me to make a lot faster and cleaner.

This work is closely similar to what I am working on. Connor expresses, “I find myself bound within the conventions of a genre, producing repetitive, learned views of mountainous urban terrain.” In my work, I also find myself grasping towards these typical views of natural terrain, earth surfaces or earth forms, though, what is different about my work to Connor’s it that I am using these typical, commonly understood and recognisable views to speak to what the selected material that sculptural work utilises is doing our natural environment.

Images of thermoformed plastic shot today on Canon 5D Mark 2 in the photography studio.
The glossy, refined quality of these images is aligning well with the intent for this work, so I am a lot more happy with these images compared to ones shot in the previous session.
I enjoy the tactile look to these images, It makes me want to touch them and feel the hard plastic and its smoothness.
I enjoy that the form’s silhouettes resemble rocks or mountain ranges, though, the materiality more resembles ice, melted wax or plastic.
Relating back to the communicative intend behind this work... The natural form is covered and embodied by the plastic to gain aesthetic satisfaction, though at the same time, this action is taking us away from the natural environment and in turn polluting it.

Polystyrene rock forms photographed with Canon 5D Mark 2 in the photography studio
These images are getting there though they are not quite communicating what my intention is for this project.
They look nostalgic, cold, modest...
They don’t have any hyper glossy, super refined, consumer like materiality or finish to them ... they don’t scream “harmful for the planet” and the composition of these images is not right.
None will be used in my catalogue page or in any other areas of this project, though, it was helpful to explore what isn’t working in order to continue with what I hope to capture in the images I take next for this project (catalogue and potentially a photograph for a wall work as part of installation)

Catalogue page image + text WIP...
I’m thinking that because I have said "hyper glossy" in the catalogue text, it will be more fitting to have a glossy image of my work in the catalogue, to avoid confusing the reader and ensure the text and image are working together as one.
Will re-shoot this weekend and try to capture a glossy image of my work... this may be of the thermoformed plastic or resin / fiberglass rock forms

Testing rock forms arranged in a pile.
More rock forms are required to make a larger pile that appears more ‘balanced’.
It will be useful to scale up (about 30 cm up and out?) to give the overall form more mass, so it doesn’t get lost or look unimportant when it is in a pile arrangement.
