Weekend Sketchbook Challenges #31
This week we are doing: watercolour/painted backgrounds.
I love background painting. And by background painting, I don’t mean like, landscapes, or interiors etc., I mean just painting, generally abstract, stuff onto blank pages in my sketchbook ready to draw or write or collage over later on. It’s great. It’s so easy to just completely zen out and enjoy what you’re doing when you know that what you’re doing is (a) so simple and (b) probably won’t matter later because you’re going to draw over it anyway, so you can just draw over and hide any bits you don’t like! It’s also super good for if you tend to draw in black and white like I do, or if you’re an HB pencil kind of a person - painting the background is an easy way to force yourself to work with some colour every so often.
So the aim here is to create a cool background to work over later, something that might inspire you more than a blank white page. Or maybe you don’t work over it later, because it ends up super pretty anyway! But either way, the aim is just to let loose and play with colour and paints and shapes and see what happens!
Top tips for background painting:
1. Work in a few sketchbooks at once, or else work on loose sheets of paper to collage into your sketchbooks later. This just saves on waiting for everything to dry! I have a whole box of empty sketchbooks waiting to be used, and I tend to crack the whole box out and do a few pages in each whenever I have time to do a lot of something like this.
2. Don’t paint too dark. Like, you can if you want too, obviously. Hell, it might even be best to try it out and see what you can do with it - you might end up with something amazing, so possibly ignore this one if you want to! But I just find it so much easier to work over later if I haven’t gone crazy dark.
3. Don’t think you have to be too neat, or only use one colour to paint the whole page, or even that you have to cover the whole page! As I said earlier, the aim is just to create an interesting and creative background to work over later on, so don’t worry about any of that stuff and just try out new things!
4. Watercolour is great for this, I love watching the colours swirl into each other, but you can use anything - acrylic, ink, poster paint, whatever you have to hand, so don’t think that just because you don’t have any watercolours you can’t do this one. And on the other side of that, if you have watercolours and don’t really like painting with them, give them a go with this challenge - you might be surprised!
My examples are below, I’ve actually been really into doing this lately! Some of these I plan to draw over, or perhaps do some lettering over, but some of them I think have ended up actually better in their own right than anything I could draw over them, so I’ll leave those ones be! I hope you all end up loving this as much as I do, and I look forward to seeing your submissions!
(Also sorry this one was so long and rambling, it turns out I feel oddly passionate about painting backgrounds in sketchbooks haha!!)
