i don't actually think teenage Dean Winchester would be spurned-lover-style jealous of teenage Sam's girlfriends i think based on his s1 behavior that it's far more likely he went "HELL YEAH my little brother is DATING he is going to SLAY at this and i'll make sure of it," unilaterally appointed himself Sam's wingman, had to be beaten back with a stick from micromanaging his brother's love life, and probably lovingly fantasized about all the hot chicks Sam was gonna hook up with and all the things they'd get up to because let's face it, who wouldn't fall head over heels for the guy? (speculation about kissing practice, which of course Would Not Count as anything except making sure the little nerd did their family proud, is left as an exercise to readers who are so inclined.)
also probably the closest thing to a jealous shitfit he pulled involved one (1) time Sam ditched a hunt to be there for his then-girlfriend's Important Life Event, and it'd be like 40% loudly-expressed "he should be putting his FAMILY first" and 60% ferociously-suppressed "we don't get to just DO that! if i've accepted only ever being able to date super casually for a few weeks at a time before we blow town then where the fuck does he get off thinking he can just PRIORITIZE this COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP BEHAVIOR bullshit. that i tooootally don't want or care about anyway. because it's for SISSY NORMIE LOSERS, not a tight-knit clan of ULTRA-COOL SECRET MONSTER HUNTERS like us"
like i think Dean did accept much more readily, long before he could even realize the ramifications of what he was accepting, that the way they lived meant the Winchesters' only long-term relationship option was "rampant emotional incest that we don't have to acknowledge as long as we all only bang girls," but he also canonically had all kinds of festering resentment about missing out, and was aware on some level that their lives required the sacrifice of a lot of things he secretly longed for (and made a lot of noise about devaluing in favor of What's More Important)
and the toxic cocktail of that + envy of Sam's ability to just go "nah fuck expectations i want something else" + boundary-challenged investment/enabling/policing of each other's heterosexual exploits as a bulwark between their family dynamics and The Unspeakable + freakout over the early warning signs of a difference in values on family loyalty + inchoate terror of losing him to the outside world one day + unthinking idolization and projection along the lines of "well of course this girlfriend would take him away from us and wrap her entire life around his if she could, i mean, have you met him? who wouldn't want that? this is WHY we have to keep it casual and not get girls' expectations up"...
...the entire dynamic of Dean being Sam's number one hookup cheerleader but also perceiving signs of romance/commitment as a threat... s1 Dean trying to have a hand in pushing him towards actual romantic prospects anyway, because he's worried about Sam grief-spiraling and has reluctantly accepted that the rupture in the family is about things Sam genuinely wants, even as Sam's grief is already driving him to the conclusion that they aren't worth the cost and meanwhile the brothers have spent all season bonding even closer and more claustrophobically as adults...
well, i think all that is way more interesting, and in many ways even more fucked-up, than applying bog-standard jealous boyfriend tropes to the absolute mess of their upbringing

This was literally because in the previous episode Dean had a vision of a woman who he was “cheating” on Sam with. And we’re supposed to believe there’s no incest in this show. Okay.

in my mind a huge part of sam and dean’s dynamic at the beginning of season one is like.
dean is so terrified that sam doesn’t need him anymore. yes, he came back, but he’s grown up and he’s seen so much more of the world and he’s smart and self-sufficient, and so even though he’s with dean, dean feels basically useless as a protector/caretaker, the role he played his entire life, the only one he knows, and it’s now no longer really needed. so he handles that (poorly) by overcompensating to an EXTREME degree. like being even more of a helicopter parent, not letting sam go anywhere alone, checking on him all the time, etc etc.
then finally sam explodes on him, because he’s not a kid and dean doesn’t need to worry about him anymore.
and dean is soooo offended by that because like. how do you not KNOW, sam. if you think there’s a single universe where i don’t worry about you every waking moment of my life then you don’t know me at all.
and sam metabolizes that as, i’m a burden, i’m sorry for being such a fucking burden, i’m sorry you feel so stifled by having to take care of me.
and they never talk about any of this by the way. so it just becomes a never ending cycle of he doesn’t need me anymore // i’m such a burden to him on and on and on

i love that the episode about secrets comes immediately after the episode about fear. because if dean's fear is of losing his family and being alone, then this scene carries incredible meaning for him.
because secrets keep people apart. they're a rift in a relationship, a gap that can't be crossed. that gap leaves an uncertainty in the relationship, a lack of trust, a space separating two people. if dean is afraid of being apart from his family, then secrets are a threat to his security.
and to that end, dean's shock at the notion that sam hasn't told dean everything implies that this isn't a normal occurrence for them, that it's typical for sam, at least, to be open and honest with dean. if that's the case, then sam's college excursion has changed his attitude toward his brother, put some distance between them that dean clearly doesn't like and, based on the scene and what is later revealed about his character, has a hard time coping with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is the first time dean really makes an attempt to exert control over sam. he puts his foot down and tries to take the reins, and importantly this happens immediately after the security of his relationship with sam is threatened (or at least, he perceives it to be that way). this becomes a recurring theme throughout the series, so these early signs of this behavior pattern become retroactively strengthened through hindsight.
it's an interesting follow-up to phantom traveler, because now that seeds of doubt and conflict have been planted in dean's mind, his sense of security is breaking down and his fears are growing. sam is trying to put himself in harm's way, which could kill him: dean could lose sam in a very physical way. sam is keeping secrets from him, which is keeping them emotionally distant: dean could lose sam in an interpersonal way. his fear of losing his brother is being dangled twofold in front of him, and the threat of losing his dad is looming over them in the background.
the ground is crumbling under dean, and so he reacts the only way he knows how: by trying to take control of the situation, to protect his family and keep them by his side.

seeing what sam and dean have and going 'they're just normal brothers' says so much about your very superficial one dimensional read of text

We all know sam has an obsession with serial killers. Who's the most prolific serial killer sam knows ? Dean.

sam has definitely rolled out of the car while it was moving before… DEFINITELY when he was 14 and dean was 18… angsty teen stuff… they were probably arguing about john, and dean of course was defending the man with his life and sam was SICKK of it so he just opened the door and rolled out onto the highway…. a broken arm and a fractured knee and now every time sam and dean are in the car together, dean clicks the child safety locks on…. this doesn’t stop even in adulthood…

I love the way Dean tells Sam “ come here”
This is actually my third favourite hug of the guys, i will talk about first and second in later posts, but this hug is just awwwww
I love the way that Dean says “ come here” and Sam just goes, no awkwardness just right into his big brother arms.
I actually love the idea of Dean being the one who initiate the hug, the same guy with the “no chick flick moments” rule. He is the big brother, he started this stupid rule, but he is also the one who needed to have his baby brother in his arms, before they both go on the toughest mission ever. When it’s all said and done, we all need hugs. They both needed the assurance, and Dean not being on big words, this was “ i love u, i trust u” hug
I love how bitch/ Jerk is Sam and Dean way of saying “ i love u “ ❤️

dean and sam progressively getting more and more taboo with their relationship,, it all starts with dean making a harmless little joke, something innocent.. “christ, sam.. sometimes you act like a toddler, you know that? making me feel weird, ya big baby. dating a toddler.” and Sam’s face is way more red than it should be… and dean notices.. and he can’t help but tease sam…
“what? you like being called a toddler, sammy?” and sam shakes his head… nononono!! of course he doesn’t like being called a toddler, of course not!! but… dean is too good at reading sam… “you wanna give your big adult boyfriend a kiss?”
and sam,, sam is way too flustered to speak,,, there’s no way dean is talking like this right now,,,? ? ? “um— im.. dean, this is—“
“what? gross? where’d you learn a big word like that, baby? i thought you were my little kid boyfriend, what’s so wrong about a kiss? does it feel icky?” sam nods…. yes it does feel icky!!!! dean, you know it does!
and they don’t talk about it much the rest of the day ,,, dean pretends that he was just joking but sam knows that he wasn’t…… neither of them were….

sam n dean growing up so isolated they never really internalize the fact that incest is widely considered gross until sam gets to college and talks about his brother in ways that majorly freak people out 🫶

Good morning. Please consider omega/omega wincest.
Hunting is no job for omegas, obviously. Ghosts are generally fine, but anything worse will smell the slick and the hormones a mile away. John's had them both on heat suppressants and scent blockers since their first heats.
Sam came off them at Stanford. Hiding your secondary gender isn't very normal, after all. He gets right back on when Jess is gone. He tells Dean it's because he's hunting again, but that's not the truth. The truth is that he doesn't want to go through heat without his mate.
Dean never has. It's advised to have a natural heat at least every few years, but well... Who's gonna tell Dean that? It's not like he goes to the doctor. And even if he did, it's not like he'd listen. Dean has responsibilities. He's got hunting to do and family to protect. He can't be laid up for a week soaked in his own slick.
When they finally get together, Sam spends years trying to convince Dean that they should go off the blockers and rent a little cabin and have a heat together. Dean only relents when Sam says that he's going to do it whether Dean does or not, because it's been long enough that he needs to do it for health reasons. Dean can't just leave his Sammy to weather a heat alone, after all.
Of course, Sam's the one who's far, far more experienced at heats at this point, so he ends up being the one to help Dean. It's a lovely role reversal when compared to Sam's first heat, where Dean was sticking close by, making sure he ate and placing wet washcloths on his forehead. Dean had been so surprised, because obviously bold, defiant Sammy was going to be an alpha, but well... when that turned out not to be true, Dean took care of him like always. Now Sam is taking care of him, in more ways than one.

Summary: Sam's life as he knows it may be over, but he'll do everything he can to ensure that his wife and son get the reward he earned for escorting the dangerous outlaw Dean Winchester to the 3:10 train to prison. Never mind if he's dead by then.
Note: I usually do not read AU Wincest.. But this one is really good.
