The concept of gender for their species has very little, if any, relation to sex whatsoever. Gender is a social construct that has historically been entirely to do with their roles in society. As such, they are not free from stereotypes and there are definitely attitudes of disapproval, particularly in older generations, of individuals who break the established standards. choosing one's gender is something that happens when they come of age and choose their route of higher education (usually strongly urged by results from achievement tests and/or the opinions of their elders).  Secondary gender characteristics are entirely a result of extracts taken from certain plants, Femarium, Mallium and Xevelle. Within their place of higher education, what is deemed as the appropriate extracts are delegated officially. They are generally taken daily. Effects will fade after a while, though it takes several months for their system to fully revert, or adapt to a changed extract. Physically, there is otherwise no difference- there are no separate sexes reproductively, and relationships of any combination are generally accepted. More info/ characteristics about the genders below!

Femme (she): historically, society is matriarchal. Those who choose this gender, traditionally, are expected to fulfill roles in positions of influence. Within their higher education system, they're put under the most pressure for high achievement. In society they're generally treated better, but also expected to work hard, and only in “serious” or “important” fields of politics, law, business, communications, education. Traits (as a result of taking Femarium): magenta eye color, higher voice, rich and somewhat metallic scent similar to dragon's blood oil

Malle (he): traditionally seen as soft, expected to focus on having a dazzling aesthetic appearance. Essentially: like male birds. Their higher education is focused on this-- this is the gender delegated to beauty, the arts and philosophy. Traits (as a result of taking Mallium): cyan eye color, richer voice, light, sweet floral scent similar to peony/rose/vanilla

Nille (they): the gender term used for children (under the age of higher education) and those who choose to abstain from extract. Depending on their chosen field they can face some negativity (often they are seen as naïve or talked down to) while nilles tend to view other genders as being very false and “put on” and put more value in being natural. This gender is common in scientific fields and are generally people who value logical thought, geometry and a minimalist aesthetic. However, unlike other fields that are generally more tied into tradition, those who go into scientific fields in higher education are usually given the greatest choice and respect in whatever gender they choose by elders. Traits (no extract is taken): golden eye color everyone is born with, middle range voice, earthy scent ranging from sweet to metallic. 

Deuxxe (they, usually, but may use he or she): generally a choice reserved only for high class or the rich/famous and historically for royalty. There's also a counter-culture movement of “troublesome” youth who have gotten a hold of extracts mixed themselves, which is apparently not as effective or pure a method as the more expensive extract limited to high class people. Those who are deuxxe may deal with the negative view of indulgence, materialism, “new money” or, in the case of the more common imitation version, “completely ruining the state of affairs” Traits (both extracts are taken, mixed- the pure, high class version features a small percentage of a rare and expensive plant: Xevelle) blue-violet eye color, melodic voice, powerful, sharp floral scent similar to lavender. High class version is stronger and their eye color is so bright it glows in dark.

This is Circinus! no one really knows... ANYTHING about him. He seems to have a vast tech knowledge, some of which probably??? isn’t legal???

these fluffy little guys are... sand boas!!!! They’re an animal native to the deserts of Aceso, but due to overhunting by the fashion industry for their feathers... are very rare in the wild.  However, fortunately they’re very popular in captivity and make wonderful pets! They’re very intelligent and curious animals. There are a lot of different breeds with different colors and patterns, originally bred for fashion reasons. Most wild sand boas in the past used to be venomous, but that’s been mostly bred out of them, which makes it hard for escaped pet boas to survive in the wild. Ophi has two of these guys and is not happy about Vega’s fashion accessories. (Arrogance is a Big Deal fashion brand)

Loves stories, loves looking into other peoples’ lives and potentials-- anything but their own. It doesn’t take divination to know that they seem deeply troubled behind that kind exterior...

Mizar and Alcor (Alcor is the pointy one) They’re part of the oligarchy that rules the star system, and the two of them are in charge of communications (basically, the internet)

Mizar is very self-obsessed though, so in his eyes the two of them are the Most Important members of the oligarchy, and no one is quite obnoxious enough to argue against this.
