one of my favourite things about president snow’s character is that he doesn’t actually take any pleasure in the games, or their existence. in fact, i fully believe the man despises them. it’s just that he sees them as a very necessary evil, and so the show must go on.
he’s probably despised the games since he was 17, ever since he firsthand witnessed their brutality and the way it turns even the most decent people into killers. however, he’s seen just how effective and efficient a method of control they are.
they’re a short but very public spectacle that are a very brutal reminder of the price the districts pay for their rebellion. adding the aspect of being attached to these kids by providing them better odds via sponsorships, med packs, and better training and nutrition makes it even more heartrending and just more horrifying a reminder.
he knows how ghastly they are, but he’s also that clinical to know their usefulness to him, and so he continues them, because he above all else desires control.

PARALLELS FROM "OLD THEREBEFORE" & THE TRILOGY BOOKS OF THE HUNGER GAMES SERIES!! (i just thought this was interesting)
You're headed for heaven
The sweet old hereafter
And I've got one foot in the door
i almost feel like this points to katniss & peeta during catching fire, especially when peeta is brought back to life after touching the force field. katniss didn't want to accept peeta's death, hence the foot in the door to stop it from closing.
But before I can fly up
I've loose ends to tie up
Right here, in the old there-before
we all know that katniss always wanted to be the one to kill president snow when it came down to it - almost like that's her 'loose end' to 'tie up.'
And I'll be along
When I've finished my song
When I've shut down the band
When I've played out my hand
coin said that once the revolution was started, there was really no need for katniss anymore since she had already made the capitol fear the rebels. i feel like the 'finished my song' represents katniss finishing her so-called 'job' for the rebels. then the 'shut down the band' is like all the rebels who died in the process of setting the districts free from the capitol. the 'played out my hand' could point to her fighting with everything she had & wanting to fight for the people more than she wanted to pretend that she was fighting (does that make sense?)
When I've paid all my debts
When I have no regrets
katniss won the games for rue & prim. her regrets could be like leaving peeta alone that night in the arena & then he is captured by the capitol. or, hypothetically, had she died & peeta lived in the games, then she would have had no regrets since she knew he would have won.
Right here, in the old there-before
When nothing is left anymore
katniss lost many people, both enemies & friends, in the games & in the revolution. there were buildings being destroyed and many people dying.
And I'll catch you up
When I've emptied my cup
katniss seems to never have time for relationships or just for living life in general (remember, she's only like 16-17) & she doesn't seem to want any of that while in the games, as she is fighting to survive over everything else. afterwards, though, she seems more willing to give relationships & friendships & vulnerability a try.
When I've worn out my friends
When I've burned out both ends
again points to how katniss gave up her life and lost friends in the process of fighting the war.
When I've cried all my tears
When I've conquered my fears
i almost feel like this points to katniss & her nightmares + eventually she has kids, which she never wanted before out of fear they would be taken in the reaping.
Right here, in the old there-before
When nothing is left anymore
And I'll bring the news
When I've danced off my shoes
When my body's closed down
reminds me of when everybody thinks katniss died in the explosion, when in reality, she had survived.
When my boat's run aground
When I've tallied the score
And I'm flat on the floor
the rebels win the war, all thanks to katniss essentially & her willingness to be the mockingjay and make the capitol fear her.
Right here, in the old there-before
When nothing is left anymore (ooh)
When I'm pure like a dove
When I've learned how to love
i mentioned these lines in a previous post but overall i think these point to who katniss went from a fighting machine not allowing herself to make friends and be in a relationship, to a vulnerable girl who loves peeta mellark.
Right here, in the old there-before
When nothing is left anymore

Haymitch, angrily: Katniss, come here! why don’t you do what I say??!?!
Katniss: oh my god what did I do now???
Effie: he’s not calling you, dear
Katniss: ???
Effie: Haymitch calls the most aggressive goose like that
Katniss:
Haymitch: you should feel honored. [points at one solitary, furious goose] that one’s Johanna. she doesn’t let me approach her and I’m terrified of her to be honest
Johanna: what the fuck man

"Who needed wealth and success and power when they had love? Didn't it conquer all?"
-Coriolanus Snow
Yup. That's it. That's the end of their story. No need to turn the other pages that's the end of the book. Coriolanus Snow finally learned all the right lessons. They lived happily ever after. (in denial)
After watching this franchise and reading the books- I just love that Katniss and Peeta at the last scene of the series are in the meadow living their lives peacefully, the very SAME meadow where Snow once considered "Didn't Love conquer all?".
It did.

"lucy gray baird would be snow's sad little caged bird trophy wife if she returned with him to the capitol" personally i think she would be 100% willing to kill him herself if he tried anything and 100% willing to be his most loyal smokescreen if he played along with her ideals.
they are both the snakes actually! they understand each other on a way no one else can and that's what's so fun about them!

You know what I love and just applaud Rachel zegler for doing so well? Making Lucy gray’s mannerisms and tone slightly different whenever she’s performing for the cameras e.g the scene at the zoo when she was being asked questions
More than that I love that in every scene with Coriolanus she doesn’t do that tone or mannerisms EXCEPT THE LAST SCENE SHE HAS WITH HIM BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARS
Like everything about it from the tone of voice to the way that she said “I’m not made out of sugar” to the way that she smiled was just so eerily similar to the way that she acts when she is preforming for an audience
Like I cant be the only one who sees how different she acts
Look at that! that’s a woman PREFORMING if I ever saw one
But what’s so important is that SHE IS preforming, she’s made her choice, she knows she has to leave but she also knows that she is talking to someone who is extremely volatile and has shown that he can kill so she has to bide her time and play it perfectly to disappear like she needed to
So she preforms to stay alive, just like she did in the games, Lucy gray’s last performance was actually this conversation- not any song.
