"JK Rowling's shitty books" 55% of readers of YA novels are now actually adults, a spike that occurred in 2012 - attributed to the Harry Potter series Harry Potter completely changed the publishing industry and spiked demand for long-form books for children. It was previously thought that children didn't have the attention span for longer novels. At the height of Harry Potter mania, there was a 115% increase in middle-grade, longer-form books for children and YA. Publishers were frantically searching for the next long-form YA sensation. No way in hell series' like Divergent, Twilight and The Hunger Games were getting written or picked up by publishers without the precedent set by Harry Potter. Countless other popular media cite HP as the direct inspiration-Avatar: The Last Airbender creators were directly instructed by Nickleodian producers to create "a Harry Potter-esq boy hero" animation. Prior to Harry Potter, children's literature wasn't considered a lucrative genre, it was assumed children just don't read anymore-since the publishing of Harry Potter in 2004, children's literature sales have steadily increased 2% every year, now 52% overall. In comparison, the overall book market has only increased 33%-making children's literature one of the more lucrative genres. She's quite literally the greatest alive to ever do it. Not even gassing her. Those are literally what the stats say. Cope and seethe.
