Every time I see mfs misuse the word hyperfixation I must resist the urge to scream Honestly, ESPECIALLY when it’s other neurodivergent people (specifically people with ADHD, as that’s what mainly causes hyperfixation, although it is not an experience entirely exclusive to ADHD) because you all should know better Y’all A hyperfixation is not the same as an interest. Even a strong interest that you’re very invested in. Hyperfixation stems from a persons inability to properly regulate focus. Hyperfixation is when a person becomes so fixated on something that they literally cannot stop focusing on it. Not something they just like or think about a lot. It is caused by an inability to focus a normal amount on something to the point were it disrupts their life because they are not focusing on anything else such as the world around them. Hyperfixations do not even have to be about something you like. Hyperfixations over things that you dislike or even that actively upset you can and do happen. Using hyperfixation as a replacement term for an interest is harmful because not only does it water down the terms and misconstrue what it is for people who can’t have hyperfixations, it also misconstrues it for people who do who may not realize that they are going through this struggle because what a hyperfixation is has been portrayed incorrectly to them.

reminder for some of y'all who clearly need it: an social construct isn't something that "isn't real" it's soemthing that is ONLY real because it is socially constructed. Social constructs have very real existence and very real consequences but they can change and shift as social situations shift and change.

Am I allowed to use the term 'hyperfixation' if I'm not adhd? Or is there a similar term I could use instead? Because it really describes my behavior: I get really obsessed with an interest for long periods of time to the point of it kinda dominating my thoughts and overwhelming my other interests. Just wondering, as I don't want to be offensive to anyone.
There are a couple of different conditions that have hyperfixations as a symptom - ADHD, Autism, and OCD are the only ones that come to mind. If you don’t have any of those, then don’t use the term hyperfixation, as it makes people without one of these disorders think of it as a “cute and quirky” thing. Neurotypicals sometimes say they have hyperfixations, and it diminishes the struggle that we go through with them.
It does completely dominate our thoughts, to the point that we have to be doing it at all times, we’re thinking about it at all times, and we’ll talk non-stop about it (even when we know people aren’t interested, we can’t always bring ourselves to stop). It’s a complete obsession that lasts for anywhere from a few days to a few months, and it often means doing other things you enjoy in a way that relates to your hyperfixation. (eg. I like reading fanfiction - the show/pairing that I read about will change every few weeks/months.)
If that’s something you relate to, and you haven’t been diagnosed with any of the above.... maybe look into it, because Neurotypicals don’t experience that. If that’s not what you experience, then please don’t use the word.
(But thank you for asking this question - it’s genuinely really good that you wanted to check! And: neurotypicals please feel free to reblog this. Because sometimes I do see Neurotypical people using this to describe their interests, but it’s not something that applies to you, and people need to learn that.)

it is my belief that any good modern holmes/watson dynamic relies on the following core tenets: 1) watson being at least as unhinged as holmes, thereby making it an insane4insane feral4feral ship 2) mutual respect for eachother, while paired with mutual disrespect for eachother's boundaries 3) a healthy dose of emotional co-dependency 4) watson being the absolute centre and bedrock of holmes' entire universe and the one person who he is unwilling to lose, unwilling to compromise, unwilling to ever cause pain for.
this is what makes elementary holmes/watson so satisfying to watch as a healthy platonic m/f friendship who get to live happily ever after together, what makes house md house/wilson cathartic to watch as the depiction of a self-destructive, unhealthily intense, doomed-by-the-narrative tragic romance that you still root for. pinnacle modern holmes/watson but in completely opposite directions

Underrated part of Elementary is the fact that Sherlock has a million weird little hobbies and they're not about annoying people or being inconvenient, they're just things he's genuinely interested in and enjoys and wants to share with other people.
He keeps bees and rehabilitates roosters rescued from cockfighting rings and does his own tattoos and fences and steals animals from crime scenes to keep as pets and is just generally living his best life. I love him.

I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much Elementary understood the core of Sherlock Holmes’ character, and the kind of cases and people he is drawn to, right from the very first episode.
The pilot opens with a wealthy woman’s murder. The prime suspect is a man who is a patient of the woman’s husband, a doctor, for help with his mental disorder. The man is desperately trying to avoid any triggers that may cause him to become violent, as he has been in the past. The doctor decides to use this man as a tool to kill his wife to collect her life insurance. He manipulates both his patient and his wife, alters the man’s medications, and ignores the man’s pleas for help, in order to set a scenario that is guaranteed to trigger the man’s violence - resulting in his wife’s death and later his patient’s.
When Sherlock pieces this together, he confronts the doctor, which leads to this:

And that’s what drives Sherlock to confront the doctor directly. There’s no smugness in being right, or for figuring out who the murderer was and how he did it. Sherlock realizes that this man’s patient was just another victim - someone who desperately wanted and sought help, only to be mistreated. Sherlock Holmes in this adaptation cares so deeply about people, especially those who are denied help when they need it most, and we learn all of this from the very first case.
