Reflection.
My personal objectives in this course was to learn new techniques and viewpoints of design, and overall what is communication design? This unit has taught me the meaning of design and its history. The workshops that involved typefaces, has changed my perspective of design as how objects can be letterforms. It’s as if it’s a game trying to find typefaces within inanimate objects.
I have discovered many design movements in this unit including, Medieval type, Bauhaus and especially Memphis group. Memphis is what stood out to me the most as I believe the designs are the most attractive. This will inspire me to incorporate this in my work and designs.
I have gain skills from these workshops, specifically zine making. Starting this unit I did not know what a zine was nor how to make one. After experiencing the process of making a zine, it was entertaining and enjoyable as there are many possibilities and outcomes of formatting a zine. I have now expanded my knowledge on zine-making and will for sure use this method in the near future.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this whole course this semester. It has taught me many lessons about design which has made me to become a better designer. :))

Friday 17th May,
Today we printed our first zine for practice of our official zine. Andy went through how to place, position and work the InDesign file for the zine. For practice, we placed random photos into the template and printed it according to directions. I also learnt how to cut and staple it correctly for it to become a zine.
Overall, this was a great learning experience as I never knew what a zine was or how it’s produced. I am excited to see how this final assignment turns out!

Friday 3rd May,
The workshop for today, we had to find typefaces within objects that occur naturally around campus. The reasoning for this project is a cool idea as Karen will be making a type website where it can write out sentences, randomly choosing and using these pictures as those letters.
At first it was difficult trying to manipulate buildings and angles of objects into letters, numbers and punctuation.
In the photos above are some of the photos my group and I took. A seven, five and Z. This exercise was actually fun and interesting as it changes and shifts your perspective on how you see objects and interpret them.

Friday 12th April
Today we experimented with shapes and again turning them into typefaces. Each stage a different shape is added to either emphasise a part in a letter or to just make the letter better. Creating each letter was a challenge at the start but got easier as we got the hang of it. For each letter we tried various outcomes of what the letter could be like and picked the best one to be displayed. Flipping the shapes and turning them upside down was helpful.
The red shapes helped with the typeface as it emphasised some parts in the letters. However, the yellow shapes didn’t as it was difficult to incorporate them in.
Finally, Andy told us to create a name for the typeface. We called our typeface Pieface as some of the letters looked like pies. Creating a typeface shows how a grid can be viewed and be a guide to a typeface like ancient printing press.

My question for the question assignment is “How is design the future?”. I have done this with paper and metal straws to demonstrate that metal straws will be the future.
This question makes me curious as to how will it be the future?
