when robots and androids and other machine characters do ordinary human things that we tend to take for granted, like wear clothes, or have a bed even though they don't require sleep, or light up a cigarette and put it to their lips even though they don't have breath to smoke with or the necessary internal organs and functions to process nicotine, there's something about that that calls to me. something about the way their attempts to emulate the human experience bring them as close as they can get, but ultimately end up emphasizing their inhumanity.
