"I know you already have practical weapons training, Sir," Sulu acknowledges aloud so he doesn't come off as an arrogant prick when he, in full fencing garb, presents the First Officer with a weapon that a child could wield without worry, "But since you're new to the art I thought it best we start off with the basics. Your foil's gonna be light and easy to use. Mostly, you'll be aiming at the upper body. Chest is really your target. In combat you'll go for the head and neck but not in fencing. We're not training for combat here, Commander."

Sulu steps back and turns so that his back's against a giant, rusted out section of ship's hull that's embedded in the bright red soil like a megalith. He's just in time to escape weapon fire but it hits a building not far off and takes out part of the wall.
The sky on this world is the same swirling red of the earth. He breathes hard to catch some air in his straining lungs and readies his weapon. It's loud, the craft they have on the ground makes a sound like a 21st century helicopter but magnified, so he has to yell to Uhura although she is mere feet away, "There are too many of them, Lieutenant... we have to find another way!"

"Vulcan?“ see, Faith’s little pea brain isn’t cut out for navigating the complex bullshit that is Starfleet, inhabited non-Earth planets and, frankly, the Cardassians. The latter mostly because she keeps calling them ’Kardashians’ and it’s a whole thing. This, though… this doesn’t play right in her head, "Wait, is Vulcan a planet? I thought it’s what you called whatever the hell Spock is?”
He’s pouring drinks like he didn’t just say something insane, and Faith watches him with a little pinch between her brows. Verex III. At least she’s heard that recently. Broadcast ship-wide but she wasn’t paying attention. Can’t understand a damn thing Chekov says, anyway. Easier just to tune it out. Try to figure out how to play music in her quarters that actually sounds like music while the rest of the ship goes about Federation business without her.
Doesn’t have to reach for a drink, one’s handed to her. She knocks it back but doesn’t take her eyes off Sulu, every question under the sun swirling behind them and ready to be asked. Her brain is a great simplifier, though. Takes what she wants to know and condenses it to, “Whoa, back up… what the hell happened on Vulcan?”
Ok, Hikaru doesn't like that response. In fact the way Faith is reacting to the news like it's news means... that it's news and he just briefed her on something that was kept from her on purpose. His lips tighten and he averts his eyes to the shot glass in his hand, "Yes," he concedes with a small and frustrated sigh, "Vulcan is a planet. And a people. Or, it was..."
He looks from his slug to Faith's empty shot glass. Did that bottle really come all the way from Kronos and pack no punch at all? Faith doesn't seem moved by it in the slightest. What a way to spend your birthday, he thought grimly. Bad news and booze that might as well be water.
"It was destroyed several years back by Romulan attack. They almost destroyed Earth as well." he explains and shakes his head somberly, "It feels like a lifetime ago... but it's your birthday, I don't wanna drown you depressing details." Hikaru reaches for the bottle to pour Faith another drink then holds his up in toast, "Here's to a great today and boundless future." he smiles kindly then drinks his shot and immediately winces, holds his head and buckles over, "Ahhh... how did you not even feel this?!"

"when i saw you in that hospital bed... i never want to see that again."
"hey... you're awake. want me to get a nurse?"
"don't be so stupid! acting like i wouldn't care, thinking you know me! you don't! it broke my heart seeing you hurt!"
"...we can't be together. you know that, right? you have to know that."
"i know we broke up, but we can still talk. right?"
"i never asked for any of this!"
"don't go. please, just... stay with me."

PINNED POST
indie canon HIKARU SULU of STAR TREK, alternate reality. Portrayed by John Cho. Low activity and highly selective. Side blog that follows back from @phdinrage. MUN: Jandon or Jan, he/him, over 21. RULES: Must be 18+ to interact with this blog. No long lost relatives. I won't change Sulu's canon without a damn good reason. No god modding, no drama, no call out culture, no hate of any kind. I'll unfollow for that stuff but other than that I'm pretty chill. :)

“I’m not callin’ your ability to do your job into question, Mr. Sulu,” Montgomery snarked like a boss as he tried to recalibrate the shuttle to follow his own instructions instead of the helmsman’s, “I’m just wondering aloud if you got your position on a technicality because I can’a rightly figure out why you’d list us to port when that single degree’s gonna make damn sure miss Earth by a lightyear by the time we get back to Federation space.”

“Our destination coordinates are locked in, I’m just looking for the smoothest way around the Oort Cloud. This should take us up and around without any problems. We’ll tick two degrees after the cloud, cross Pluto’s outer orbit, Neptune won’t be in sight but we’re set to pass between Saturn and her rings. That should put us back on course and give the shuttle a little boomerang as we head into solar winds.” he said as he slid his over to override Scott’s recalibration to the correct one because fuck no, “I assure you, Mr. Scott... we’ll get you to Earth and we’ll get you there on time.”

When she was first dragged on board this ship, Faith couldn’t stand to be near the windows. That pitch black, the flashes of light from stars. Being in close planetary orbit, hovering near moons and debris. Constant anxiety. At least she doesn’t have a problem with heights, or this all would’ve been really painful. First few months were, actually. Closed in her quarters, no real contact with anyone but Spock and fat lot of good he does her, as stoic as he is.
Now, though? She spends her time split between training, in the hologram cemetery and jogging the corridors, and sitting here in the mess hall. Taking up the same seat at the end of a long table, as close as she can physically get to the windows she used to avoid. It’s still out there, vast and terrifying and nothing, but it’s become soothing. Sort of.
Faith’s taken out of her waking slumber by a familiar voice. Sulu always looks a little happier than he is, always happy to see her which she can’t figure out because she’s not exactly good company these days. She turns a little in her chair and makes room for him, “Klingon.” she rolls the word around in her mind, trying to fit the name to any face she’s seen in the last few months. Sounds familiar. Her head shakes and she picks the bottle up by the neck and looks it over, “Didn’t have to. I don’t exactly do the ‘birthday’ thing. Headache I don’t need.” and, conveniently, she forgets to answer his question, “Since when do you got time in the middle of the day? Thought they’d have you doing those practice drills again.”
@ifyoutestme
He chuckles at that with a little nervous edge that finishes with a sigh, "Ah, no. No, the uh... the drills were a precaution. The distress call from Verex III? There's no visual but the audio is puzzling. Communications says it sounds like whoever's talking isn't a native speaker. It could be nothing but the Captain doesn't want us warping into another Vulcan."
That was probably a mistake. Sulu barely knows the story with Faith and her friendship with the First Officer. He really can't tell if they have one but they talk, he knows that. He's not even thinking when he spills the beans on Vulcan that he might be betraying some confidence or bringing up a sore subject.
Sulu sets two small glasses down and gingerly lifts the bottle out of her hand to open it, pour them each a slug. He doesn't celebrate his birthdays either. It's sadder to celebrate alone than to just skip the day altogether but he keeps a smile on his face and tries not to think about it.
"Klingon, yeah. It's supposed to be strong,” Hikaru separates the two shots and hands one to Faith, “but I wasn't gonna test it without a witness."

"Bet you thought I forgot?" Sulu says, taking a seat beside Faith in the mess hall. He sets a bottle down beside her that he wishes he could have wrapped but he just barely got it out of quarantine, "It's Klingon. If it blows a hole in your stomach, remember it's the thought that counts. So, how old?"
He knows how old she is. Hikaru is so starved for friendship that he's 'accidentally' found her here every other day or so for a month and he hangs on every tidbit of info. A relic from Earth’s history, so interesting to talk to but that’s not why he’s here. Bothering her. To admit it out loud would be to admit he isn't as tough as he's built himself up to be. Starfleet is as amazing as he thought before enlisting but being away from Ben and Demora is harder than he ever imagined. Faith is his friend because he won't leave her alone. He's lonely. Maybe she's lonely, too.

@ifyoutestme + starter for Hikaru Sulu
No new transmission, no new distress call in weeks from an M Class that appears on no maps, no sensors. Kirk’s been winding down, feeling the grind of it all and he’s pretty sure he’s not the only one. The rest of the crew are tired of drifting listlessly in a star system so vast, looking for a planet that doesn’t seem to exist while everything about this call for help screams it’s a god damn trap. They’re too close to the edge of Klingon space to have gone unnoticed and it’s a weight on everyone’s mind.
He’s holding court over stars. Standing at his huge, near picture window, watching the universe roll by in waves of black and pinpricks of light that streak when the ship speeds up. Mostly just thrusters, they’re out far enough from the red dwarf at the center of this thing that it’s got basically no pull on them and they’re doing what they can to maintain a circular orbit.
There’s a tone behind him, a little warping sound and he turns just enough to look at the door, “It’s open,” as if that makes any sense. Even a smart ass when he’s tired.
The door opens with the crushing sound of compressed air and Sulu enters the chamber, hands behind his back, one wrist grasped in the other palm. Although he’s often caught the attention of the higher ups because circumstances have thrown them together, he’s always surprised when he finds himself in the company of commanding officers. Except in reprimand. There, he deserves eyes on him. Bad to the bone.
He approaches Kirk but stays a respectful distance, keeping the Captain’s desk and chair between the two of them. The Captain looks tired. He feels it, too. Time seems to move differently in an empty star system.
“You asked to see me, Sir?”
