another really bad post im not gonna lie. i don't know much about vikings but this is basically saying "i'm not mad at people who like the aesthetic or into historical fiction, i just think people with an actual interest in history are stupid". golden age pirates weren't a monolith and pirates are still a thing today! and are sometimes good and sometimes bad! there will always be piracy as long as there are boats. we don't know a lot about golden age piracy because of low literacy rates and high propaganda rates but we DO know: they had and have no central authority so it is impossible for any sweeping generalizations to be accurate. it kind of seems like this poster just saw some criticisms of our flag means death and ran with them because stede bonnet and blackbeard are good examples of golden age pirates who are generally understood to have owned and traded slaves (there are way worse ones also). but we ALSO have evidence of different pirates who freed slaves, pirate articles including labor protections and stipulations against sexual assault, etc. both these things are true. pirates had total freedom from states so it is ridiculous to act like there were any consistent politics between pirate ships at all really ? feels like op is being edgy by uncharacteristically saying "you know the major threats to england's hegemony were 100% vicious barbarians right"

and if you need further evidence of how bad the vibes on this post are you can see in the notes someone enthusiastically agreeing and throwing "other cultures people are valorizing lately" under the bus for "slavery, genocide, and human sacrifice" such as mesoamerican indigenous peoples 😐
