    if you play ANY sort of villainous character - from a pick-pocket to a full-scale serial killer - and i follow you, please know that i’ve come into this FULL WELL what i’m signing up for. i don’t expect you to soften your character for me, i’m not going to complain when they aren’t nice to my characters, and i honestly probably love watching them do what they do. not all characters are going to be the “good guys”, or the type of villain that can be redeemed. not everyone has a tragic backstory that makes them do the things they do - some people enjoy it, others just do it because they can, and for some it’s all they know. yes, there are villains with a soft spot or two - this doesn’t mean they need to change everything. our characters become friends/lovers even though my character is a “good guy”? you keep doin’ you. keep stealing those purses, killing those people, burning those villages to the ground. 

        tl;dr - I DIDN’T FOLLOW YOU BECAUSE I WANTED SOMETHING SOFT AND EASY - you keep bein’ a villain, babe, cause you’re  just as excellent as the heroes.

I find it interesting that jewel finds herself in positions where she has to care for other people professionally (bodyguard, park ranger, shinigami (though that is a different circumstance lol). is there something that draws her to those lines of work that overrides her more solitary nature?

It depends on the verse. Becoming a Shinigami was something she was ushered into because her reiatsu was too noticeable to ignore. That, on top of her increasingly unpredictable behavior around using violence to get food (and allegedly starting participating in riots near noble properties.)

The Shinigami were like, “Right, we can make a soldier out of this one.”

And Jewel went along with them because it seemed like a greener pasture and her initial thought was that she could come back to Rukongai someday to help improve it. That didn’t happen – she isn’t allowed in Rukon -- but she got a neat sword and an environment where she can wail on people and kill things and get paid for it.

In a modern verse with the park ranger position, Jewel was first and foremost drawn to the idea of working in nature and getting paid for it. She loved the idea of being outside most of the time, having to be knowledgeable of her environment and sharing that info with visitors.

She isn’t the most personable guide, but she knew her environment and liked the idea of educating people about the outdoors. The less ignorance on her trails means fewer search and rescue missions she would have to do. Sharing knowledge benefited everyone.

The park she works in is rich in lore, completely snowed over most of the year, and rife with supernatural occurrences. It can be a lot to deal with but she enjoys a challenge.

The bodyguard AU is more of a ‘I want things’ AU so I made it happen lmao. She guards shady people and can use violence when it’s necessary. It’s a job she can do but doesn’t enjoy. It’s a cyberpunk/sci-fi world and she struggles to find her niche.

Solitude and loneliness are both themes with her. She loves to be alone but it has a limit. She’s detached but wants connections too.

Shinigami Jewel thinks she’s supposed to be alone, given her poor reiatsu control, the constant manipulation from Hyouhakyoku, and previously failed relationships. Even her closest friends have called her out on not being a great friend all the time. She messes up a lot but she tries. She’s introspective and willing to improve so her demeanor and actions get better over time, but there’s a period there where she’s contradictory and struggling to figure her shit out.

Modern Jewel has a family and people she grew up around. Her parents weren’t always present with her and her connections with them weren’t solid until later on (Grammy aside; she was always there for Jewel.) All her siblings were younger than her. Chase was a family friend and the only one older than her that she truly befriended, but they struggled in their teens to mid 20s because of his rising addictions.

Modern Jewel’s a lonely Jewel but she’s used to being on her own a lot and it’s a cycle that keeps going. She doesn’t internally struggle as much in modern verses. The same themes are there, just expressed differently.

Jewel can't help but chuckle at the sight of this bitty woman carrying a six foot man.

Minutes pass as the two walked through the barracks. Jewel knows the way well at this point. Her face was a familiar one in the Fourth. She could get there with her eyes closed if she had to.

"Ya know, I'll bet these fools hunted you down and started shit 'cause they wanted a date outta ya 'er somethin'. Some a'these losers'll use any excuse ta show off. Lot of 'em aren't exactly good at usin' their words."

"Oh, thank you. I'll keep that in mind." It was one thing to spar amongst those in her division, but a lieutenant? She probably wouldn't make a very good showing, and that just wouldn't do...

"Grab the... Oh, alright." She wasn't quite used to being ordered to do anything similar to manual labor yet, but she figures hey, a good number of people here are nobles, too, and they probably had to do this sort of thing while they were unranked as well. She reaches down, hefting the man up across her shoulders- it's an amusing sight, given how small Hibiki is. "Very well... Please lead the way."

"I see." Jewel wasn't one to pry, especially on those she wasn't close to.

She reached down and hoisted up the unconscious soldier over her shoulder. She gave him a wiggle -- yup, still a sleepin' noodle.

"Which division are you from again? I don't keep track of most Shinigami outside a'the Eleventh."

She was the spitting image of Shinji though wasn't she? Jewel thought it was a stupid question to ask but she'd already flapped it out of her mouth.

"It's not a wound! An' trust me, I didn' enjoy the sick I was feelin' a few weeks ago." It had let up a little bit, but strong smells were still a bother.

"Well yeah I work fer my brother an' all! He's my cap'n an' I still take care'a the hollows." She was proud of herself, still working and taking hollows down. Actually had gotten better at it, even. "Been doin' other stuff too." Though that other stuff was related to sewing and watching living world dramas. She had started enjoying some of those.

He looked at the finger and that smooth grin didn't leave his face. "C'mon, ya can find out all'a the secrets'a the Seireitei 'at way." Those secrets and gossip were meant to stay under wraps… most of them were anonymously posted in the bulletin. Little snippets in a tiny strip.
