PSA: Don't use Open Office

I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.

Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.

Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

I went to a party last night and everyone there is an artist of sorts and everyone was showing off their work and it made me so insecure and askkksksks I just feel so stupid and sit with my art and it's so dumb and I'm selling my art at a market next week and I feel like no one will buy my art and ajajsjsj 😞

I just wish !!! I didn't have to be my own worst enemy !!

thinking about just how sudden and cruel Jessamine's assassination was. Corvo and Emily suddenly ripped out of their regular lives.

Corvo has only just returned after months of being separated from his family. he only stepped off the ship, barely made it to the Tower, didn't even walk through the front door before he watched Jessamine be murdered. his luggage was probably still on the ship, all his dirty clothes, warm coats for Tyvia and light silks for Sekonos, his journal and maybe a spare weapon, the nice coat for when he is meeting up with the rulers of the different isles. the little gifts he most likely collected through his travels across the Empire, for Jessamine and for Emily and maybe some members of the Tower staff that he is fond of. did he bring back candy he loved as a child so that Emily could finally try them? where did his personal correspondence go?

what about Emily? she was taken and kept locked up in the Golden Cat, and we hear her mention her doll, but what other things were left behind? her favourite cup, the plants at her windowsill? her collection of drawings, and the notebooks she kept for her lessons, paints and music instruments that she was learning to play as every proper lady should? where are her favourite fairytale books now? her wardrobe, her favourite shoes, the little hair ornaments Jessamine would tuck into her hair for all the parties and balls?

and what of Jessamine? with no family to set away memorabilia, sort through her things, her diaries and notes and letters that were waiting for an answer? the private ones, that she kept hidden away so no one could read them but her? did she have a favourite tea blend that now sits abandoned in the Tower kitchens?

we do not see their rooms, once we return to the Tower to take out Burrows. it is almost like the royal family never existed, and I must wonder: what happened with what remained behind of their lives, after Jessamine died?

still a wip but sod it i'm posting it now. take back what's yours - but for real this time.

my beloved pet project/au affectionately referred to as "fake dishonored 3" features emily having had her face stolen with billie's semblance void power while on the prowl in karnaca, which turns seemingly permanent when the outsider is extracted from the void.

with everyone close to her unable to recognise her, torn between trying to reclaim her face and looking for a new identity, emily and billie set out on a voyage to the icy coast of tyvia to commit crime and stage the most ambitious prison break of the series yet (lofty, i know, considering).

also, the void is without shape, grieving for its loss and falling apart, and there's hoping the marked of the past can put it back together before something catastrophic erupts from it.

i'll do more art but yeah hire me to make games i'm brilliant

The day Daud dies,

Billie wakes up in a bunk bed in the rusty hull of an aging cargo ship and finally feels feeling like herself again for the first time in weeks. It must be the fresh air and the hard but structured labor she thinks, she's finally putting everything behind her. In the Flooded District, Corvo wipes his sword, rifles through red pockets for a key, and moves on.

The day Daud dies, Jess appears to Corvo in a dream. She just looks at him - he tries to talk to her but his mouth is screwed shut. There's a wound in her chest where her heart should be, but she doesn't seem like she's in pain, at least. It's been so many years. Every time she shows herself to him he regrets having let her killer go a bit more - even if it doesn't seem like she harbors any ill will towards either of them for it. Somewhere in the Tyvian wilderness, the wolves and the crows have themselves a merry feast.

The day Daud dies, Thomas is hard at work trying to negotiate a better price for his grapes. The summer has been too dry and the harvest was bad but he needs the coin if he wants to make it through the winter. In a different life he would've taken the money he needs to survive by force. His sword is still there, hidden under his floorboards. For emergencies. For the harder nights, when he jumps at every creak of the damp little cottage he calls his home now. He manages to talk his way into getting a very respectable sum for what is an honestly rather subpar product. Any other day he would've celebrated it but today he feels - empty, strangely, and separated. Like he's missing something and he doesn't know what. He goes to bed early thinking he must just be coming down with a cold, and he doesn't think about it again the next morning.

The day Daud dies, Rinaldo is crouched on a rooftop near the Old Waterfront, watching the river. Business must go on, even with the Royal Protector on the loose. Sometimes he cranes his neck to try to see the rotting refinery buildings dotting the hillside above the Flooded District, as if he could make out anything from here. He doesn't feel too good, but none of them have felt particularly good in recent days. When evening falls and nobody comes to take over his post, he spends several hours agonizing before he finally abandons it to make his way back home. Maybe they just forgot about him. It takes him until long in the night to get to Rudshore - for some reason it feels like his teleportation just isn't as strong as it should be.

The day Daud dies, Billie is tending to the Dreadful Wale. She's been corresponding with some members of her former life and she feels like she's getting closer to finding Daud. There are still so many pieces she hasn't been able to place just yet, but she thinks she'll get there in time. In Karnaca, the disappointed Eyeless drag their cash cow's lifeless body out of the ring. They're gonna have to find a new gimmick to draw an audience now. First they'll butcher him, though, and see what parts of him the witches can use.

The day Daud dies, a boy comes home to discover his father is dead. And then another, and then another.

The day Daud dies, the Void shivers a bit, like wind rustling the leaves. Then all is silent again.
