This is for fun. I just played the OG again and took note of things I’m excited to see for Part 2 - or at least can hope for in part 2. These are in no particular order

The Gold Saucer Date being a shopping date for the girls instead of a romantic date for Cloud and <player choice>. The other option is avoiding the date portion all together and making it more mission based - they get a warning that they have a spy among them or something like that. Whatever option doesn’t add fuel to the LTD.

I think making the friendship between Aerith and the other members of the team really strong will make her death really heart wrenching - so what better way than to have a great time shopping with her, bonding, laughing, and boom - depression.

Nibelheim is gonna look so cool. I really am looking forward to how they have Cloud and Tifa react.

The Palmer fight in Rocket Town - He must get hit by a truck or the GAME WILL BE RUINED (jk.. partially)

Palmer thinks Cloud looks familiar and won’t stop mentioning it - he was there during the Honeybee Inn dance

The Temple of the Ancients and the Forgotten City are going to look insane I think

Zack comes to get Aerith with his cool wings - assuming he’s actually fully dead - after her death - so she isn’t so afraid of the sky anymore.

If Zack is only alive in a second timeline, we get the Laguna treatment and get to play as Zack

The part where Cloud goes nuts and beats up Aerith - the visual of him as a child trying to stop himself from giving the Black Materia from Sephiroth should somehow still be integrated and have Tifa get a glimpse for foreshadowing. Party members stop him before he actually gets to hit her, but fail to stop him from giving Sephiroth the Black Materia

Cid running in HD (I think how he runs in OG is hilarious, so I hope they translate that like they did with Tifa)

I’m hoping they end Part 2 at the Northern Crater right as Cloud breaks - what a cliff hanger.

The Sephiroth “illusion” in the Nortern Crater where Tifa starts to question herself, ultimately making Cloud crack - I think people are going to need a lot of tissues.

Snow gear for Icicle Inn - Barret needs a furry white coat so somebody else can call him a Marshmallow. 

Snowboarding will require more logistics to explain how they all get down the mountain. Red and Barret rent a snow mobile and fight the entire time.

One of the mini games at the Gold Saucer is the Honeybee Inn dancing with a few songs to use for difficulty differences

The Battle Square is similar to the Corneo Colliseum so you can have a full party

Do you think that Cloud still would have been with Tifa if Aerith had actually survived? I've always wondered ever since watching Advent Children that if Aerith didn't die, would he have made the same choice to be with Tifa. I ship Cloud with both Aerith and Tifa and I feel like he likes them both, but I also sometimes feel it's just unclear who he TRULY loves.

I think it’s made pretty clear who he truly loves. You’re forgetting that he was under a false persona when Aerith knew him. There is no canon evidence that he had any romantic feelings towards Aerith. We only have canon evidence that he felt romantic feelings for Tifa. 

Aerith being alive when he falls into the Lifestream would have still resulted in Tifa needing to help him. She’s the only one who knows him well enough to do it and she’s the only one that he’ll open his heart to. Cloud’s desire to join SOLDIER was based on him wanting to impress Tifa and have her notice him. 

Mutlishipping is fine, but you can’t claim both are canon when we have tons of evidence stating that he loved Tifa and none that he loved Aerith. It was not up to player choice, ultimately. That’s part of the entire illusion for the first part of the game. Notice you lose the ability to choose after a while. You can’t choose at all after Real Cloud is back. The HA vs LA Highwind scene is based on your early game choices and based on the affection the girl has towards Cloud, not what Cloud feels towards them.

Cloud tells us a lot in the Lifestream. There is not an alternative Lifestream scene, no matter what your choices are. 

There’s also no alternative Northern Crater scene when Sephiroth shows us Nibelheim. If people have ignored Tifa to this point, they’re gonna be pretty shocked by this revelation coming from Cloud. 

So no, there is no ambiguity. The Compilation of FFVII has shown through dialogue, novels, quotes, and supplemental canon materials that Cloud loves Tifa and always has. His SOLDIER persona creates confusion, but ultimately he loves Tifa. 

So... it’s pretty clear that Cloud TRULY loves Tifa and NEVER loved Aerith romantically.

Shipping Makes Me Question My Sanity

I learned about the FFVII waifu wars after playing the remake. I played the OG many moons ago, replayed it a few years ago, but really got interested in the character dynamics after playing FFVIIR. 

I foolishly looked up “Is the remake pushing Cloud and Tifa more?” I found the shipping wars… That I never knew existed. 

You see, I played the OG and it was pretty clear to me that the story went a certain way. In fact, I didn’t even associate FFVII to romance. 

FFVII was a story about a villain who was pissed off that a grunt killed him, so he finds a way to come back from the dead through clones that his father made to fuck with said grunt and get revenge on all the humans that wronged his Mother. 

(This is my explanation in as few words as possible, because we all know explaining FFVII would take multiple posts). 

So why did I look up my question about Cloud and Tifa? Well, I was shocked at how they presented them. I didn’t remember this from the OG. Like I said, I didn’t associate FFVII to romance like I did with VIII, IX, and X. Those were clear. FFVII didn’t have this as a main theme. FFVIIR created extreme sexual tension between Cloud and Tifa.

Hello, Dutch, I love reading your texts. Now that you've finished Rebirth, I wanted to know what you thought of the date with Tifa at the Gold Saucer. Do you think the fact that you can only kiss Tifa is a sign that the devs want to end the LTD once and for all?

I like to think the DEVs don't make those decisions just to prove people wrong. I'd like for the kiss between Cloud and Tifa to be about Cloud and Tifa, and not Cleriths, so no. I do think in general they decided to be more explicit this time around and leave less wiggle room. Which they have basically already confirmed by stating that the remake will have less room for interpretation.

The word he uses is "fear", not "hope". Based on this I'd say that with Rebirth they weren't necessarily intending to put a stop to people making up their own stories, but that it is an unavoidable consequence of telling the story right. With modern graphics and an expanding story you can't really write characters and scenes in ways that can be interpreted a 1000 ways. Because that means writing your characters without a strict identity. They lack clear goals and motivations. It's kinda like the story version of a "spork", by trying to be two things you just kinda end up with a shitty version of both. If you want to tell Cloud and Tifas story as engagingly as possible, then you'll have to have him react to her the way a man in love would, his love should be reflected in his body language and actions. But if you do that, then the LTD is dead, which it now is.

We have a story where Tifa and Clouds courtship is a big part of their continuing character growth, and a game where you're rewarded for maximizing your team members affections for you. But if Cloud and Tifa are already shown being romantically paired even in the most bare bones playthrough of the game, since it's a core part of their story, then you can't have the effort of getting max affection with Tifa culminate at the date with just a hug or something else that could still be sort of misconstrued as not being romantic for the people who can't stand reality. That would be hugely disappointing and anti-climactic, especially since they already hugged in part 1 and already nearly kissed in Gongaga.

No, Tifa and Cloud didn't kiss to disprove Clerith, they kissed because their romance is an integral part of their story, they kissed because you can't have FFVII without having Cloud and Tifas Romance.

Why are you telling people that Cloud and Tifa had sex under the Highwind when there is no confirmation at all of that happening? It is never confirmed anywhere, or even by the devs that they had sex. On top of that, it is very out of character for them anyway. Tell me, what makes you think that Cloud and Tifa, who by the way are very introverted characters that are never even that open to each other, would be having sex out in the open on some rocks?

Because it's true, and it is confirmed. Lets be clear here about what it means for something to be confirmed, because if you think SE would ever come out with an official statement saying "Cloud tapped that ass underneath the highwind", you're kidding yourself. Obviously they'd be more subtle, although honestly, barely. We don't need official confirmation on things that are obvious, I am not sure whether its' ever been directly stated that Cloud attacked Aerith because of Sephiroths control, but some interpretations are intended, we as the audience are expected to be able to understand and infer without our hands being held for every detail. When I explain what Don and his men were planning on doing with the girls, no one ever responds by saying "actually, it was never explicitly mentioned, perhaps 'breaking her in' meant they were going to play super smash brothers or something".

Just because Sex isn't shown on screen, doesn't mean it's not certain it happened.

Lets be clear here, the only reason ANYONE doubts that Cloud and Tifa had sex, is because Aerith exists, and people don't WANT Cloud and Tifa to have had sex. Firstly, let me just state that if you think that Tifa and Cloud wouldn't have sex outdoors because "they're introverts", then I have a surprise for you, being an introvert doesn't mean you're a prude, trust me on this one. As for "why", well, if you think that "we've just confessed our feelings towards each other after 20 years and are spending our last night together underneath the same stars where we first made our promise" isn't a good enough reason then I don't know what to tell you. Having sex because you're going to die the next day is so common it's actually a trope. So lets drop the pretense that this is unlikely, it's not, it's about the most likely thing in history. So what about the evidence? Well lets start with the obvious. Tifas line specifically says "words aren't the only thing that tell someone what you're feeling". So whatever was expressed, was physical, unless you think she meant expressing feelings through the beautiful art of Mongolian throat singing or something. So what feelings were they expressing? I've heard people claim they expressed feelings of mutual friendship, presumably expressed through a firm handshake or something.....Honestly, this is the most absurd take possible. This scene is talked about over and over again, the fact that they express their mutual feelings towards each other during that night is reiterated again and again, the reason it's always mentioned is because this moment is important, it matters. Saying they just reaffirmed their friendship is simply a take that doesn't hold water, I think this comment on thelifestream.net (ripped from their LTD analysis) is still the best way to point out the absurdity of this take.

— After all they’ve been through together, Cloud and Tifa have a meaningful night in which they discover … they’re friends. And this realization leads them to live together.

This take can be dismissed right off the bat as being absurd to anyone whose not desperately trying to avoid accepting that these two are romantic. This isn't a matter of different interpretations, it's a a matter of lying to yourself vs not lying to yourself. We also know that Cloud and Tifa feel the same way about each other.

This is not a rejection or a one sided thing, whatever feelings are expressed that night are mutual, Cloud and Tifa are on the same page. So to recap, we know from developer statements that what is being expressed this night is that Cloud and Tifa feel the same way about each other, and that this is being physically expressed. What are those feelings? Well, throughout the years it has become harder and harder to argue against the fact that what Tifa feels for Cloud, is love. And if the feelings expressed are mutual, then 1+1=2, they are physically expressing their love for each other. For evidence of this we can simply look at developer quotes which all state the same, Tifa is called a village girl Cloud had started falling in love with. Like here, in the Crisis core ultimania:

Before leaving for Midgar, Cloud declared ‘I’m going to become a SOLDIER’ to Tifa, a village girl he had started falling in love with, and also promised to protect her. -pg. 24

Or the 10th anniversary ultimania:

Before leaving the village, he boldly called to Tifa, a girl he liked romantically, and declared he would become a SOLDIER. -pg. 12

Likewise, Tifa is confirmed to love Cloud, even as recently as a trace of two pasts, which states that Tifa fell in love with Cloud during the night of the promise.

“It was just an idea, but from the moment it was made, it became an irreplaceable promise. And that night, when Tifa realized that the Cloud she admired was just an ordinary boy, she fell in love with him"

These are the feelings that form the backdrop of this story, effectively this is the catalyst for everything that happens, from Cloud hiding from Tifa in Nibleheim, to creating a fake persona, to his mind breaking, and the eventual restoration of his true self, aka, his pre-soldier self, aka, the self which loved and was loved by Tifa. After the lifestream, these are the feelings that need to be clarified, this is the topic, the order of the day, this is what led them to the moment underneath the highwind. This link is confirmed by the developers.

The only woman who knows Cloud’s past. In FF7, Tifa is the only one who knows Cloud’s childhood, and furthermore, she holds the key to people involved in the story of Nibelheim’s burning down, which is also depicted in CC. She and Cloud came to realize their feelings for each other in the end of the story, and live together in AC and DC. -pg. 33

Notice that three things are clearly linked here, 1 is the feelings of Tifa and Cloud from when they were younger, 2 is that the two become aware of these feelings during the lifestream, and 3 these feelings are physically expressed underneath the highwind. These are not three separate events concerning three separate emotions, it's a single plotpoint that goes from childhood instigation to highwind conclusion. If these feelings had changed, this would be shown, but it's not show, it's never stated or even implied and every bit or wording we have on the matter directly links the feelings of the highwind scene to those felt by Tifa and Cloud in youth.

So another recap, we know, without question now, that underneath the highwind Cloud and Tifa physically expressed mutual love. Just for good measure: 20th anniversary ultimania:

And when Cloud and Tifa remain behind alone, in their final hours, they reveal their feelings for each other together. -pg. 232, Story Playback

Thanks to Tifa, Cloud regains himself, and before the final battle with Sephiroth, he confirms with her feelings that can’t be expressed in words. -pg. 394

I could go on, but I think you get the point, the next question then is "ok, so if they physically express their love, how do we know it's sex?" And there are a bunch of reasons, for one, loaded wording. As I explained, SE wouldn't just say they bumped uglies, so we have to check if they insinuate and use loaded language. 15th anniversary ultimania:

For many years, Cloud and Tifa have been holding favor for one another. Facing the impending final battle with Sephiroth, they at last confirm together their feelings of desire for one another. -pg. 23

"Desire", not "love", not "affection", desire.

The Fateful Night the Two Share An event near the time of the final battle with Sephiroth, where Cloud and Tifa stay at the airship Highwind together. With this possibly being the end — an evening overcome with a flood of feelings becomes something special.

A "flood of feelings", "something special", more loaded language

From ultimania omega:

When their companions disperse to the places where people important to them await, Cloud and Tifa are the only two to remain behind. They reveal their feelings for each other in their final hours, and……. -pg. 198

"And....." not finishing the sentence, asking the reader to "figure it out, fill in the blanks" The idea here is that they can't say what happened, but you're supposed to be able to figure it out. But what could have happened that they can't show or talk about? A hug? A kiss? They show that stuff all the time. Hell, Cloud has already hugged Tifa in the remake, which was described as him crossing the boundaries of friendship. Apparently what happened underneath the highwind that could not be shown then DEFINITELY crossed the boundaries of friendship.

For additional context here we have Tifas reaction to the event when she thinks the others saw them, she's absolutely mortified to the point where she falls on her knees. You think that's because they saw them hugging or kissing? You think she's 12? Let's have some more implied language shall we?

Yuffie is unaware that Cloud and Tifa had just spent the night together. Woman’s intuition is as perceptive as ever, no? -pg, 39.

If you think "spent the night together" in this context means they just spent the night in each others vicinity, then had SE said "slept together" you'd probably have argued that this proves they just went to sleep. Womans intuitions was supposed to have clued Yuffie in that "something" happened, something we're all skirting around and not outright mentioning but heavily suggesting. The final nail in this coffin comes in the following quote from the 10th anniversary omega.

Nojima: “Oh, the scene with the risqué line of dialogue? It was Katou who wrote that as well, not me.” ―”The line ‘Words aren’t the only way to tell someone how you feel,’ right? That was quite a mature conversation for a FF game.” Kitase: “But I remember having to get another version that was too intense toned down.” Nojima: “The original idea was more extreme. The plan was to have Cloud walk out of the Chocobo stable on board the Highwind, followed by Tifa leaving while checking around, but Kitase turned it down.

What can we gather from this? Well, the "words aren't the only thing" line is meant to be risqué, this tells us that it is in reference to mature subject matter. A kiss isn't risqué. It also shows us how much they skirt around this issue if even this line is seen as "risqué", clearly they won't say they "bumped uglies". It then reiterates that the line is mature. And finally it tells us that there was originally another version of THIS scene, which was far more explicit. The fact that this scene didn't end up in the game doesn't mean we can't use it to investigate what we're supposed to get from the scene. It's the same scene, the scene wasn't changed because they didn't or wouldn't have sex, it's changed because it would be too explicit, too risqué, too "not pg-13". They even tried getting that version in. If that's not enough for you I don't know what is, a close up of Cloud commencing penetration? Would you go "nah fam, it's censored, who knows what's happening beneath those pixels?". The fact is that Cloud and Tifa had sex, the fact that some people don't accept that is not my problem. In no other scenario would I be required to pretend that a story is not what it is. When I talk about Star Wars, I talk about Darth Vader being lukes father, and if there are conspiracy theorists out there who think that Vader and Obi-wan were all lying then the fact that they don't understand the story doesn't mean that I should stop saying Vader is lukes father just to spare their feelings. If people don't understand the story, it's my responsibility to be MORE outspoken about the truth, not less. Oh, and just to pre-empt the nonsense argument I know people will have. "But the HA highwind scene is optional, there is also a low-affection version!". Listen, you don't get to make that argument anymore, for years I've listened to dishonest liars claim that the low-affection version of the highwind was bland, platonic, and not-special. However, all the ultimanias agree that what happened that night was special and romantic, so congrats Cleriths, you shot yourself in the foot, by arguing that the low-affection version of the scene wasn't special, you also proved that it didn't happen and that the high affection version is canon. Bravo. Thanks for your question.
