Colors of the Heart Still Gives Me Feels 8′)

It continues to fill me with such joy that this cover exists, and no less by Studio Yuraki c:

Fr tho - to this day, Colors of the Heart remains one of my absolute favorite OPs - in terms of both the visual storytelling, and the soundtrack. It perfectly captures the transience of Saya’s immortal life, with her eyes wide open as she absorbs decades of different milieu, while drifting ghostlike from place to place.

It also speaks of the quiet stretches of waiting her family/allies must endure as they meet her after each Awakening. I’m especially fond of the one frame where David sits by a window, contemplating a crumpled rose in a little vase. (I used to think it was Haji - the aspect and mood were more suited to his character - but it’s nonetheless a charming moment of contemplative softness for an otherwise extra-stoic and cut-and-dried character.)

Then there’s those little snaps of Saya and Diva in the acid-trip bathtub, so close together but never touching, reminding us of the emotional disconnect between them. A universe of emotions in technicolor in the background, but their figures are black and motionless.

Then there’s Kai dashing through the setting sun, always within an arm’s reach of his goal but never quite there. It’s such a perfect visual reminder of his character’s arc, and shows how desperately he’s trying to keep up, while Saya herself moves like a slo-mo phantom, yet never seems to slow down.

Tbh, the lyrics as a whole could be speaking about Kai as much as Saya, especially the closing lines, “I will paint tomorrow with my own two hands/fingertips of light.” - creating lasting beauty out of disaster and adversity ;w;

tl;dr: I adore Colors of the Heart and if they ever do a reboot of the series, they must animate it in this style. I demand it.
