Adding all of that backstory to August was such a wild and good storytelling thing btw. Like what do you mean you used to get so bullied, and you were traumatized at your initiation from the threat of being beaten up if you get a hard-on when watching gay porno (which is horrible, no one should go through that) just to end up bullying people and posting gay CP of your lil cousin for the whole world to see?? Are you out of your mind?? This is so good. August keeps on choosing to be a bad person. Every. Single. Time. And they really proved it this season.
Sure, he didn’t continue this tradition during initiations. Bare minimum. Nils had a good say in that too, it’s not all August for sure. But then he decided to out two kids instead? To the whole world?? Where like, as we saw, the threat of being beaten up is VERY real now for Simon (and Wille if he didn’t have security). August really said live long enough to become the villain. And boy oh boy did he chose to become the villain.

Since Young Royals is over I wanted to take a look at some characters and kinda explain how I interpret them as people. (this is hella long but I’m mostly praising the show and how they handled things cus I’m an optimistic girl who loves life)
First of all you have the students of Hillerska. Hated them.
Genuinely cannot stand most of them and I gotta be honest, I was cheering for the school to close down. The toxicity and pure classism that radiates of that school is sickening but I’m afraid not unrealistic. As Willhelm said it’s in the walls of that place, it’s impossible to get it out. Everyone in Hillerska loves to pretend everything is fine. As Wilhelm said EVERYONE IS FAKE. Not just Hillerska but the monarchy and that entire system is too. While there are most likely very close friendships in the school it seems like nobody really knows or tries to understand each other. They refuse to acknowledge the fundamental problems of the school and instead party and just see the school closing as a sad thing.
Vincent is a perfect example of that. I love how they showed that queerness never was a problem for him. Vincent was fine with Nils being queer cus it doesn’t directly effect the system. Simon being a socialist who can possibly talk about the issues of the school was. I also think that he sees August purely as his role. He sees him as a party animal and having connections to the royal family. That’s the role he fulfills so he’s confused as to why he wants to be more than that because position wise he’s in a perfect situation. Him not knowing what August wants as a person and not knowing his best friend was queer just shows to me how little they know each other. How superficial their friendship is.
Nils is interesting. He’s queer and him being a person of Color all give him an interesting position in the whole system. He probably has a little more empathy and is a little less out of touch than his friends (ex. he is the first person to talk about how fucked up their initiation was) but he chooses to ignore it. I think that for him the pros outweigh the cons because at the end of the day he’s still rich and at the top of the foodchain at hillerska so it makes sense that he has no desire to change anything. Which brings me to why I LOVE felice.
Felice is by far my favourite character (Simon is a close second). She very much could turn a blind eye to everything and be like everyone else but she doesn’t want to anymore. I think being a black girl in Hillerska gave her more sympathy and understanding of the problems but I think even then she could’ve dealt with it like Nils because lets be honest racism is everywhere. But she realises if it’s already this bad for her she can’t imagine how it is for the people of the lower class. It made her see how fucked the hierarchy is and realise how deep it is engraved in the school. She realises that not even her best friends want to truly understand her struggles because it’s awkward for them (I said in another post her friends weren’t as bad as Vincent but honestly they’re just as bad). That realisation made her not wanna go to New York. She doesn’t wanna ignore her problems like everyone else but face them head on and goes to Sara. The one person who at the end wasn’t fake to her.
Im absolutely in love with Sara and Felice’s relationship. They kinda parallel Simon and Wilhelm in a way because Sara was the first truly honest person in Felice’s life just like Simon was to Willhelm although Felice and Sara are the platonic version of that (and while I loved that it portrayed the importance of friendship, my lesbian ass was really wishing they would’ve kissed like the TENSION but that’s just me). I also think that’s why the betrayal of her with August was so painful. She couldn’t care less about August, she cared about the fact that the one person she thought she always could rely on did that to her.
I also loved Sara this season. She’s a very flawed person yes but you could always tell her apologies were sincere. You could tell she had strong feelings for August but she was able to put Felice’s, Simon’s and most importantly her own feelings first. I was really scared they were gonna make her and August get back together in the end (especially with the conversation about giving people second chances in reference to her dad being also possibly about August) but they made sure to stick with her character development.
That brings me to August. He’s a really interesting character to me and I never know how to feel about him. He has done some horrible shit and at first I wanted him to suffer or do something big to try to make things right and I didn’t like how he never truly got his karma but I like how open they left his character. He obviously has some issues (eating disorder, trauma from his initiation,…) but he doesn’t ever delve deeper into them. He acknowledges the things he does and is obviously very sorry but just like the rest of the people in Hillerska and the Monarchy he ignores the causes of it. He never acknowledges his eating disorder. He’s probably aware that he has a problem (cus Simon pointed it out) but ignores it. He ignores the reasoning Sara gives for them not working out and gives her solutions that in the grand scheme will not change things. He still has huge respect for Eric despite what he did to him and the fact that it clearly left lasting traumas and just brushes it off. He longs for the Crown Prince role not even thinking about the harm that it can cause him. I said that he didn’t get karma but that’s not true. I think that the Crown Prince title is a curse and even if Wilhelm didn’t mean it that way, I think he got his final karma at the end by passing that curse down to him.
I love how they handled Wilhelm and Simon. Wilhelm had just like the rest of Hillerska and the monarchy the tendency to ignore things. Simon was the one who had to give him a wake up call and break things off. Simon forced him to face reality. He didn’t understand why Simon saw the title of Crown Prince as such a curse. Everyone ( ex. His mother) around him kept saying how much of a privilege it was that he never took a step back to question if it really was such an honour. His mothers words were so deeply engraved into him that it took him a while to finally be able to hear Simon. Simon wasn’t the reason why he didn’t want to be the Crown Prince, he just made him realise he never wanted any of this in the first place. It was never about Simon it was the fact that Wilhelm as a person was never really for the Monarchy. He loves his mother and the connection to his brother but he finally was able to let it go. He knows his brother still would’ve loved him but the perfect image of his brother the Crown Prince is gone. I don’t think he’s ever gonna forgive August but he has let it go and given him the title he so desperately wanted. His hatred towards him is not strong enough to keep the title of Crown Prince. In the relationship he was the one who needed to change. Sure Simon also went through growth and had to have a lot of understanding but it was Wilhelm who had to realise his core teachings and the way he thought of life were very flawed. He had to be his own person outside of the system that held him down so desperately. And even the mother understands that. She will always be part of the monarchy but she acknowledges that it nearly destroyed her and realises that she doesn’t want that to happen to her son and lets him go.
Hillerska, the monarchy and the classist hierarchy is not gonna change. But some people can. That’s why I think in the end there was no song about revolution. They didn’t have one. Sara, Felice, Wilhelm and Simon were the ones who truly got away from everything. They were able to get away from the schackles of the system and leave it behind. Even if Hillerska did reopen I doubt they would go back. They didn’t revolutionise anything other then themselves. There wasn’t a revolution but an evolution of themselves.
I think that’s a beautiful message. You can’t always change the bad things around you but you can change the things about yourself that were caused by the bad things around you. You can do and be better even when the world isn’t.

"I can understand that the thing with Simon has been life-changing for you."
"It's not about him. It's not about Simon, mama. Its... it's this role. It's always been this role that's been the problem. For me."
THE WHOLE FUCKING STORY!!!! WILLE'S PROBLEMS HAVE NEVER BEEN BECAUSE HE LOVES SIMON BUT BECAUSE HE'S A PRINCE!!!!! AND HE'S FINALLY SEEING THAT!!!!!!!

Obsessed with the Young Royals finale.
Obsessed with Simon, Sara, Wilhelm and Felice driving away from a shutdown Hillerska, free from a system which was never going to accept them, happy and together.
Obsessed with how there’s still a chance Hillerska could reopen because that system is next to impossible to take down and the upper-class rarely face real consequences for their actions.
Obsessed with August’s face when he saw Wilhelm walking away, realising that he was trapped. Wilhelm said August was the heir they needed but he couldn’t have been more wrong - that man has bucket loads of trauma, an eating disorder he isn’t even close to ready to confront and no support system around him, he’s not gonna do much better with the role of Crown Prince than Wilhelm did.
Obsessed with Nils coming out to his friends and them easily accepting him, because their issue with Simon really was the fact that he was poor and a socialist, and Nils both still believes in the system he’s in and his queerness doesn’t destabilise the system the same way Wilhelm’s does.
Obsessed with Stella ending up with Fredrika, because although Rosh might have been fun to hang out with for a night Stella also still believes in and upholds the system she belongs to and Rosh was never going to fit in that system or uphold the traditional feminine values needed to survive in it.
Obsessed with how the monarchy is portrayed as unchangeable and impossible to modernise because it’s built on such outdated ideals.
Obsessed with the mix of both happy and open-ended endings.
I just adore it so much

I’ve seen some people (on TikTok mostly I don’t actually know about tumblr cus I avoided the tag for spoilers) hating on Simon and saying he didn’t try to understand Willhelm and his situation enough and I’m just like HELLOO??? DID WE WATCH THE SAME SHOW. I already found season two hate about Simon ridiculous BUT FOR SEASON THREE???
Simon has been so understanding and has sacrificed so much. He deleted his socials and all the memories with his friends online for the royal court. He thought the protest of the students was stupid but still joined for Willhelm. He sat down with the people who mock him for his activism despite them doing the same thing for lesser reasons. I would go as far to say he gave up his IDEOLOGIES for Willhelm. He has a lot of political opinions about social issues and the royal court but he’s not allowed to express any of them. He sometimes slips out a negative comment but he has been holding it in for the entire season. He knows he can make an actual difference and is close to someone who can but he can’t do anything about it. His partner doesn’t even seem to care about the issues he’s so passionate about and dismisses them. Yes Wilhelm has his own personal problems but the way he talked about LGBTQ+ issues was honestly hard to watch and you can tell Simon was hurt. He must’ve had bad opinions about Erik after he heard about the initiation thing but he didn’t say anything negative about him because he knows how important he is to Willhelm.
And I think NONE of these are the reasons why he broke up with Willhelm (atleast not the main ones). Simon saw how much the title of crown Prince damaged Willhelm. How broken it made the relationship between him and his mother and how broken he became. Willhelm changed for the crown and lost himself in the process. Simon finally stands on his principles and decides that he no longer wants to support the system that hurt both him and the boy he loves so much. Their relationship can’t survive with that toxic title being held above their own personal feelings
Can you really blame him for not wanting to fully understand the system that is so flawed and damaging to everyone around him?

I absolutely love the new season of young royals. I also love how it furthered my disdain for out of touch rich people. They finally took full advantage of the setting of the show and showed how ignorant people with wealth can be.
You have Felice’s friend group who I and I’m gonna be completely honest CANNOT STAND. Like I like madison but frederika and Stella are so infuriating. Frederika has a knack for saying the most tone-deaf stuff that really gets under my skin and Stella is so blunt and just not in a good way. The way they almost got angry with Felice for calling out the toxic traditions and the bad school environment. It never affected them so it cannot POSSIBLY have been that bad. I love how they acknowledged Felice being one of the only black girls at the school and the friends just not getting it. Not understanding what the issue is exactly and just responding with ‘you’re beautiful.’ Felice knows she’s beautiful. She isn’t insecure she’s just calling out the biases of the teachers but she realises she’s not gonna be able to have a fruitful conversation with them so she just moves on to not make things awkward. This is so relatable for a black girl with an all white friend group. Sometimes the discussion is not worth your energy.
But they are NOTHING compared to Vincent and some of the other guys. The comments they made were sometimes so infuriating I had to pause to compose myself. They are a slightly different case since they actually full on faced the toxicity but especially Vincent refuses to cope with it and continues to traumatise students further(sure not as bad as he faced but initiations will always be disgusting)
The times he calls Simon a communist for simply speaking out about problems ( I don’t think my man payed attention in politics) yet will do a protest for a thing he’s not happy with cus hey how hard can it be poor people do it not realising how draining it can be (he should be happy they gave in so quickly cus he was not prepared)
And Wilhelm….
I’m probably gonna do a second post about him because I wanna get all my thoughts out before the final ep.
I love him but I love how Simon called him out about how he didn’t realise how privileged he was. Don’t get me wrong he faces a lot of problems because of it but he doesn’t understand some of the struggles. He saw the camping trip as just a bad night but Simon saw it for what it was. Two types of people with an incredible difference of wealth not being able to understand each other because one doesnt know how the world works. How much struggle the ordinary person has while they just see things as a given.
The lack of understanding between the two was always gonna cause conflict and honestly you can’t even blame them
(Though I will slightly blame rich people for being so out of touch with world issues but hey guess that’s just poor me talking who’s jealous of them)(Wilhelm tried his best and so did Simon)

So I've been thinking about Bottoms a lot, obviously, but there's something interesting I've noticed in the fan reaction to it. Now, as a lesbian in fandom, many of my ships are non-canon because duh obviously, canon sapphics are not common. And one of the things I would consistently see is people shooting them down with statements of "They're just friends, women can just be friends it doesn't always have to be romantic" you know. On and on.
That said, I haven't seen anyone shipping Josie and PJ together. Not telling you that you can't, if you do more power to you, just saying I haven't seen it. Everyone sees them as just friends and there's no need to push it because, for once, they both have their own ships separately. Not only that, but there are enough women in the cast that there's also A TON OF JUST FRIENDS RELATIONSHIPS.
So for everyone that has said "You're forcing it to be gay when it doesn't have to be" I say yeah, maybe so. But look at what happens when I don't have to force it. When two canonically sapphic characters can exist in the story as friends while still having romantic relationships with other people.

no bc dangerous romance ep 6 was literally bad buddy ep 5 in like every way just more melodramatic 💀💀
literally from kang/pat being jealous of sailom/pran's bestie to said bestie hating kang/pat bc he was a dick
to kang/pat clumsily reckoning with his feelings that were always there and sailom/pran encouraging kang/pat to be with "the girl he likes"
to sailom/pran basically asking kang/pat "what are we bc you're giving me mixed signals" and the sudden kiss at the end after kang/pat experiencing jealousy the whole ep
the writers did this on purpose idc idc. i was laughing the entire ep too bc why?? would they do this??

The thing about utsukushii kare, yes I'm saying this after everyone that has to see it has seen it is that you got to get on tumblr and read some high level analyses and meta in order to realise the underappreciated misjudged worth of it. A trope is a commonly used theme, only when it's fledged out to the maximum to the point where it becomes unrecognisable from the tropey shit you see is when it becomes real. I've seen time and time again people failing to see the qualities of UK mistaking it for the usual romanticization of toxic dynamics u see in just about any mainstream well loved media. I know that's what i subconsciously did when the first season came out and settled for fmvs and paid no further attention. Mainstream rendition of popular tropes have seasoned us for casual viewing. especially deeper more convoluted stuff like the psychology behind characters like hira/kiyoi. there's a difference between normalizing toxic dynamics and portraying the working of it. One straight out romanticizes toxicity and gets us to think it's okay 'as long as they love each other' while the other addresses it's problems one by one and carefully breaks it down. It explores the taboo nature of certain dynamics and the fine line between purposeful manipulation/imbalance and circumstantial misfortune. For ex. lack of proper communication may be a character's problem without being their fault. Because i totally lack the articulacy or knowledge to pick it apart word by word I'm just going to say Sometimes that's just how their brain works. After years of neglect and struggle, that's how people end up sometimes. This by no means exempts them from blame for the harm/hurt they unwittingly cause. But we need to take time and patience to understand why. Why? Because these people are trying. They're yet to realise a lot of things still and despite being together for what years?? still dysfunctional but they've been giving their best. They'll grow. Together they'll heal and learn to be better for each other, for themselves. But we need to stick with them and be patient to witness that growth. I know I'm speaking this confidently about utsukare cause I've seen it's worth up close after i was impossibly drawn to it when the second season came out and from the posts i read of several smart eloquent observant perceptive attentive people. it has pretty much been very show stopping ground breaking phenomenal to me. I hope people that are yet to see it come to know of it too at some point. Or else you are terribly terribly missing out.

today on everything i love and that is perfect about utsukushii kare (bc i just binged rewatched both seasons), i find it so fantastic and perfect how they, not even advertently, show how hira and kiyoi grow out of their high school personas, bc that is so a thing that happens and is something i find hardly any media really navigates as well as i see it here. high school is very much a rigid place, and in it you play your part; the popular kid, the class clown, the nerd and so on, but outside of high school, after high school, when you grow up and enter the wider role, there aren’t those roles to fulfil. you have to be you, and to do that, you have to figure out who that ‘you’ is, whether thats something you’ve always known or had inside and just kept buried or hidden, or thats something you’ve yet to discover and have to find, and then go on to actually be that, and shed all of that behaviour you learned or picked up or hid behind in high school.
idk if this is a universal thing, but it is something that especially speaks to me, being more of the hira, the loner, unpopular, shy kid. that role offers a lot of safety in high school, which is weird to say bc its not a place you aspire to be nor is it particularly enjoyable, but in a way it spares you of further ridicule. if you just fill that role and don’t do anything that acts outside of it, you can get by just fine, then high school is done and you move on. thats what utsukushii kare shows so well. the way hira is treated in high school is never really that outright bullying you stereotypically think of, which i love bc thats not really what high school is actually like. really, it is more of what you see in the show. this lower level stuff that you kind of just go along with even if it is objectively mean. the name calling is not loud insults, its those pet nicknames that follow you and remind you of the things you dont like about yourself, the things you’re embarrassed about. its the established hierarchy that you are at the bottom of that signals to you everyday that you are less important than everyone else. and hira goes along with it partly bc of kiyoi but also bc its safe and, dare i say, comfortable, bc hira has not just not known different, but doesnt wish to either, which is how he settles into his dynamic with kiyoi.
on the other hand, kiyoi’s place as the popular kid is something he is more visibly uncomfortable with, at least to me, and you see it even before you learn about what his real dreams and interests are. the way he acts with the people that surround him, he is never exactly like that. his treatment of hira especially is kinder while still hiding behind that film of treating him as the group’s lacky, but when people treat hira unkindly, he steps in, and i like to think this is from a place of him just being a good person and not just a defensiveness of hira bc of however he feels. its weird bc he does want to be admired so his place shouldn’t feel so wrong, but i think its from a place of wanting to be admired for his merit, for who he is, not out of any control or fear. he wants to be level with people when it comes to reality, and praised for the things he can do well, his abilities, not just some abject superiority others think he possesses. and i cant tell you how much i love this character for this whole ‘cool guy who’s expected to be so cool and not care about anything but actually really wants to do well at stuff and has a passion for acting and dancing and performance and just wants to be loved’. like that is one of my favourite character tropes ever and utsukushii kare does it with kiyoi to absolute damn perfection, which is only added to when you think about the queerness underlying it, kiyoi acting as this stereotypical straight popular high school boy who’s too cool for everyone but really not only is he not straight and have these complicated feelings for a boy, but he also loves performance and theatre and i love that those two things aren’t separate and it makes so much sense. there is just this young queer boy who wants to be liked hiding behind this veneer of coolness and popularity and its fabulous.
so when they do get out of high school, we get to see kiyoi embrace that side of him that he always kept hidden, not just doing what he loves, but actively pursuing it, trying hard, putting in the effort and dedication and i adore that. it lends itself so well to the mantra of ‘trying your best is the coolest thing you can do’ which i wholeheartedly believe. not caring isn’t cool. caring is cool. trying your best is cool. and not only does it make kiyoi more admirable as a character, but it feels like kiyoi is a lot more comfortable and welcoming of the admiration he gets, bc now it feels deserved, and its funny that that manifests through him being humble and playing himself down bc thats the very human thing to do when you’re praised, but it also parallels the way hira downplays and degrades himself which is actually, in a twisted way, him thinking highly of himself, which we see discussed in the last ep of season 2.
bc when hira leaves high school, he still clings to that role, even though there’s no one around him maintaining it. for him to be lowly, there has to be someone around him thats above him, but there isn’t now, which is why he clings to the dynamic he has with kiyoi above him bc it carries over and maintains his safe space. and what we see in season 2 is kiyoi removing that, asking hira to not raise him up just so he can put himself down, he wants to be level. and with kiyoi trying to take away that safety, that leaves hira having to figure out what his place actually is in the world, a world he’s always removed himself from. that’s why his discussion with noguchi is so important, bc kiyoi has struggled to be direct and put it into words with hira, either bc he struggles to say those things or doesn’t want to be so harsh with hira, but noguchi has no issue with holding back, nor feels any need to be gentle. he tells hira flat out you are selfish and ignorant to a fault and think so highly of yourself that you think you are the only person in this world. and thats what hira needs, a real challenge, someone who sees his mindset and twists it to show all the negatives of it. its never what hira intended, but its the message he sends to others; by belittling yourself, you give other people’s words and thoughts no weight or importance, thinking you know better. by removing people from your photos, by hiding behind the camera, you are not escaping the world, you are saying the world is only for you. there is only one plane to exist on, and by trying to be there alone, you deny everyone else of their existence. the option is not to not participate, its to participate alone. and what i’d hope continues in the story (idk what the movie is about at all) is a journey for hira to find how he can be involved at the same level as everyone else, to step out of the safety of self inflicted isolation and join in, feel comfortable finally taking up space and find who he is outside of high school.

I have nothing of importance to say other than ep 7 and 8 were amazing. They once again went back to the importance of friendship. We saw Joon Pyo and Ji hyun being very close and we finally saw how deep and important their friendship is. He worked for him, he took care of him and kept up schoolwork for him. The fact that he didn’t even have to think twice about accepting Ji hyun and genuinely being so happy that he finally liked somebody was so sweet. The boss being the second person Ji hyun wants to see is so adorable and once again shows his close relationship with her. Ae ri is also just so great. She doesn’t back down from her seniors who were in the wrong and protects her friend even when he’s not actually there. I think it’s very good that they focused on the friendships more and that they keep their own themes about it that have been shown even in the earlier episodes.
Jae won was going through it but honestly I can’t blame him. He saw the person he cared most for at the moment almost die right before his eyes. Something that seemingly already happened to him once before. His last conversation with Ji hyun was harsh but honestly I didn’t expect anything else. In his head this really is the best thing they can do and in his head he probably thinks he is helping Ji hyun (even though he obviously isn’t)
Also the two headed snake whose names shall not be named because I simply do not have enough respect for them…. I hope you people die in a ditch. Dude snake was WAY OUT OF POCKET and I do not understand how one could joke about something like that. I get being frustrated but I wouldn’t even say something like that to the person I hate most. Girl snake is getting pathetic. She sees how hard he is having it yet only thinks about how she finally has a chance again. It’s not even intimidating, Ji hyun is not scared of her it’s just sad and even if Jae won and her get together it’s wouldn’t be because she won. It would be because Jae won is too broken hearted to be with the one he truly cares about.
Also obviously the cinematography was amazing. The way they almost have you believe that Ji hyun died (they had me clutching my pearls till the therapy conversation) and the colours being all somber. And then when he gets out of the hospital everything is bright and colourful. Also I don’t know how they do it but everytime Jae won appears on the screen all the colours seem to suddenly die out and his expression is just so dead inside it always gives me a little of the chills. Im sure there are people who can go more into detail with this but I do not have the amount of braincells needed to figure all of that out.

The intimate scene in ep 6 of the eighth sense was honestly so realistic and felt very natural. I think the biggest reason for that was because of how comfortable they were with each other and how close they were BESIDES kissing and actually sleeping together.
What I mean by that is how they snuggle together but also how they touch each others faces. The pinching each others cheeks, squeezing each others noses, touching the others ears, biting each other,…
Its a very natural thing to do with your partner. I have done all of those things with my partner LONG before we actually got intimate. Those silly touches and moments are things I notice aren’t shown a lot of times in shows. When they make a couple affectionate they usually just kiss or hug a lot but those aren’t the only ways to be physically affectionate towards your significant other. I never even noticed THAT I do those things until I saw them doing that and was like ‘omg I always do that’.
It made the scene suddenly ten times more intimate, natural and felt more comfortable.
This show truly is about the queer experience and I never felt that more until that scene. A scene where I saw my own relationship in.
And then suddenly my boy drowned and I just wanted to SCREAM IN A VOID.
