Assignment Name: In-Game Scene
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: 3 game assets (character, background, and foreground element) put into a Unity project at 1920 x 1080 resolution for a top down illustrative RPG game.
Feedback: I really liked that I went with the top down RPG format for this game, even if I didn’t go with the traditional pixel art style for it and went for a more illustration heavy style. I felt that I might not be able to translate my game well if I tried to put it into pixel, but I think going in that direction would have given the game a different vibe but still look nice in a different way. My main issue with my project was the difference in my line art weights between the player character and the background, as I had realized too late that the widths did not match up at all. I also made another mistake of drawing my background on a square canvas instead of remembering to resize it to the size of how I wanted my game resolution to be. But it didn’t turn out to be too much of an issue, as I made it so you can briefly walk the character up and down to see the rest of the environment.

Assignment Name: Sketchbook - 4 character profiles
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: Character profiles for Hazel, an apocalyptic botanist, that depict her personality through how she expresses emotion. The emotions starting from top left: anger, worry, concerned confusion, amazement
Character Desc: Hazel is a 27 year old woman who, before the green apocalypse, she graduated from a prestigious university with a PHD in botany. She is gifted with the other sciences, so when the plants of the world was turning poisonous, she was able to survive until she found a group of surviving scientists and decided to join them in their mission. She is not a fighter, she is the brains of her team, as a talented botanist, she is prepared for the dangers of this new world and is in her element. However, she is not the main focus of the game, as the world is part of the larger narrative, so she is just one of the people contributing to trying to recover from this apocalypse.

Assignment Name: Character Design - Key Art
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Feedback: The composition I decided on does not really center my character. I did this as a deliberate choice, as game wise I wanted these characters to feel like a part of the larger narrative of the game in its world building, which is life in the green apocalypse. Hazel, the botonist/scientist, is seen here exploring the infected city wearing her gear, including her tank and her gas, mainly unbothered. She is reading the notes she took during her exploration and is holding up a plant sample she collected in a vile. I wanted this key art to show off Hazel's interaction with the greater world outside of her makeshift laboratory, as this is the world that the player would mainly be interacting with the most.

Assignment Name: Character Design - Character Sheet
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: Character sheet for a Hazel, an apocalyptic botanist who works with a group of scientists to reverse the effects of the green apocalypse. She is sporting a steampunk tech aesthetic that fits with how I felt my environment design came across.
Character Desc: Hazel is a 27 year old woman who, before the apocalypse, she graduated from a prestigious university with a PHD in botany. Her current situation is reflected in her design through her gas mask and gas tank, and I wanted most of her body to be covered from the poison in the world.
Feedback: For my character sheet, I drew Hazel in two action poses and one stable pose. The first one she is using her spraying tank to spray poisonous plants.

Feedback: I have not gotten around to coloring this yet because I'm still not completely done with the back view, but I'm pretty happy with the amount of details I put into this character. I think her occupation as some type of scientist in an apocalyptic scenario can be read from her design, but I do think age wise she looks a bit young due to her height. I could just say she's short, but I think the height and the hair together makes her look more like a teenager than a full grown adult with a PHD.

Assignment Name: Environment Design 3
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: Version 3 of my environmental design sketch for. -- World: Earth’s plants and flora have become toxic for humans to breath around. The world is overgrown and overrun by plants as most humans have died off from the toxic gases created by the new flora -- The Room Backstory: A group of botanists ban together to try to experiment on plants in a makeshift laboratory to try to reverse engineer the plants’ DNA to be able to create oxygen for them again Environment Notes: -- Room used to be an abandoned apartment that the scientists have repurposed into a makeshift laboratory for their experiments on the dangerous plants that have taken over their world. -- This room was a less dangerous choice of residence/workplace because the trees that have grown through the sides of the room have long been dead.  -- The botanists so far have been able to reproduce a few breathable tree specimens that make the air in this airtight room breathable for them -- There are scattered plant experiments all around all in different stages of containment depending on the scientist’s progress with changing their DNA. -- The center tree is the main source of oxygen, that is the tree that they are trying to replicate the DNA and behavior of in the other experiments.
Feedback: I wish I wasn’t so ambitious with this design. I feel I would have finished this assignment if I didn’t commit so hard to the details of this environment, but I feel like the details are also extremally important to the environment storytelling. I wanted to focus on redesigning my environment from last week’s feedback, since that was the first feedback I had got for my environment design. So I felt making my original environment design more concrete came before redesigning my environment after my major event. Which I plan to do after I have this colored.

Assignment Name: Sketchbook - draw 2 versions of a prop in your environment
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: This is an important prop from my environment design for a world were the natural flora of the world no longer is breathable by humans. This is an innovation that a group of surviving botanists created so they could safely experiment on bonsai versions of trees to try to alter their DNA to make them not toxic once again.
Feedback: This is one of my favorite props in my environment.

Assignment Name: Environment Design 2
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Desc: This is a shared living area/workspace of people surviving in a world where the nature has turned poisonous against humans.
Feedback:  This sketch is still partially colored, but I feel like my vision would feel clearer once I have more shading done to give my environment more dimension. I think I should have coordinated my color palate a bit more. Coloring/shading is definitely not my strong suit so I was mainly experimenting with colors and hues feeling out what highlights the environment the best. I think for the next design, color wise I want to focus on making my hues a little brighter and more saturated, almost a little neon to give it a bit more of a cyberpunk vibe.

Desc: Floor plans and sketches of a shared living area/workspace of people surviving in a world where the nature has turned poisonous against humans.
Feedback:  The main thing I feel I struggled with was filling in the negative space of my sketches. I had a general vibe I wanted to go for which was still to incorporate plants as a big part of my environment. As I wanted to portray that the people occupying this space are experimenting with plants of their world to make livable species they could try to replace the invasive poisonous plants with. Since this world was overtaken by plants, I thought it was fitting to also make it look like the room was once overtaken by plants then taken back by humans, which is why the ceiling is held up by dead tree that are no longer harmful to the human inhabitants.

Assignment Name: Procedural Art to Audio
Tools: Unity, Photoshop
Desc: Visualization of “¿” by Bring Me the Horizon made with code in Unity to made with the highs and lows of the music.
Feedback:  I struggled a bit with this project for most of the steps. Making my sprite was one difficulty as I’m not very good with “feeling” audio or music, so I took a lot of inspiration from watching fractal animations as fun graphic ideas I could make. Also the code was a little tricky to figure out for me, even as someone who works with code a lot, audio is not familiar to me. I separated 4 different frequencies found in the music by bass, near bass, middle sound, and high sound and made different objects move to those beats. Something I wish I could have added or improved upon would be some more particle effects that react to musical triggers.

Assignment Name: Patterns from Particles
Tools: Unity, Procreate, iPad
Desc: An abstract effect representing the feeling of forgetting a good dream after waking up.
Feedback:  I feel with this project I was a bit too ambitious with my concept. The way I approached this each shape I drew represented an emotion/effect one feels after they wake up from having a good dream, but they can't remember what they dreamt about that was so pleasant. The "fluff of fantasy" is seen the most during the gif as the fantastical fluff that makes up a good dream is what draws a person to their dream world rather than fantasy. The "flames of imagination" are what drives your dreams and they fade out and fade in as you're trying to piece together your dream. Lastly the "weighted memory loss" has the most realistic effect with a little added gravity that grounds the person back into reality once they inevitably forget their dream. I like how my vision turned out, even if there was a lot going on, because it still comes from a place of thought, however I feel I could have coordinated my color pallet better.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: Piskel, mouse, Wacom tablet
Desc: 4 pixelized versions of a fantastical creature I sketched from last week’s sketchbook assignment, a BunnyBee
Feedback:  My chosen tool to pixelize this artwork was Piskel, which was an application I have used a lot before that I find very easy to use. The portrait I struggled with the most was the 8x8 one because I had very little pixels to work with, and it was hard conveying a lot of the important details that identifies what kind of creature it was supposed to be. I think my favorite ones are the 16x16 and the 32x32 with 4 colors because those restrictions pushed me to focus on making the important details of a bunny pop and I think the animal is clear in the art. The last 32x32 portrait, with no color restrictions, I also struggled with due to figuring out how to convey the animal differently with no limitations.
