Journal 4  Educational systems: created and perpetuated school day follows work day (industrial revolution): if this frustrates you tell the reader why -daycare mirrors parental work day - Structuralism: rooted in Marx and everything else - Marx in the German ideology: keep wages low and disposes people of their land - Marx is mad at philosophy and thinks that philosophers aren't improving the material conditions of society he is not talking about equality but dismantling capitalism which produces and reproduces all kinds of problems (covid19 goal to get everyone back into the work force) - He was a failed academic: not well respected in the world of philosophy until he died - Gene anian: look into her work - Marx ideas persist: a lot of the things he said 200 years ago are still relevant today - Housing issue (yet we have empty hotel rooms): Marx was good at showing that it’s all about the land. Capital goes to where there is highest rate of return: where price of land is the lowest (gentrification) - Golden square mile: 100 years ago controlled 90% of countries wealth in Canada (Montreal Scottish merchant wealth) due to resource extraction. TMR was created as a garden in the city design (upper class catering and fenced in because it adhered to the principles of the city's garden design) but to get away from working class of Montreal. Masses vs classes (below the hill (griffin town) above the hill (Westmount). - Gardens to encourage the expansion of Canada out west (railroad) - Marx was talking about free: Medicare, transportation, education and recommended revolution - 1960s-->Morality cuts: former mayor Jean Drapeau: cut 50K trees on mount royal because he heard gay men were having sex in the woods and he encouraged police to hurt them and we named a park after him…? - Historical materialism: what we have experienced in the past is materially connected to what we are experiencing today. - Marx would disagree with provincial curriculum - Neoliberalism and its effect on education - Marx's: argued that the first thing to get cut for funding is literature, arts and how that effects education/life - Dewey: writer Exploring the pedagogical encounters in school of rock: Reading - Main takeaway: its important to learn with your student, its important to not have all the answer - Pop culture really influences our lived realities: what might we gain by looking at a film and exploring that in an educational sense - Current state of 21st century education: quick critique of the "creative" economy - Dewey finn is a Rockstar and he gets kicked out of his band and hes about to be kicked out of his apt by his roommate and he gets a call for a sub teacher (for his roommate) but he takes the job and pretends hes his roommate - Stick it to the man: the man is the system - So much research is going into changing the school but what about changing the teachers role: make them co-learners - In 21st century learning: there is constant add on expectations for educators expected to do more with less - Brown, lauder and ashton 2008: good reference - We need to focus on teachers While teaching is familiar there are always new experiences/encounters that open new theoretical possibilities for thinking (Deluze & Parent, 2002, p.92)

The Author of this article argues that “early-childhood education which is culturally sensitive to the needs of Aboriginal children and controlled by Aboriginal communities will help to remedy and close the education gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth” (Nguyen, 2011, p.229).

Beautifully written piece by lil.pharroh on Instagram. A great reminder that one day a year isn’t enough to make up for or recognize the social, economic and historical trauma that our aboriginal people have and continue to endure.

“The literature reviewed for this synthesis document indicates that time and again health disparities are directly and indirectly associated with social, economic, cultural and political inequities; the end result of which is a disproportionate burden of ill health and social suffering upon the Aboriginal populationsof Canada” (Naomi, 2004).

In Canada there exists an obvious health incongruency between Aboriginal and non-aboriginal children. Elements contributing to these health disparities are multi-faceted as are the efforts made to address them (Adelson, 2005, p.S45).Using multi-media this blog will provide resources to explore what and how socio-economic determinants disadvantage aboriginal Canadian families as well as the  jurisdictional issues that uphold them.  The social, economic, cultural and political inequities that impact the health of individuals and communities are frequently referred to as social determinants of health. While social determinants influence many dimensions of health they can also work to create health issues that can lead to circumstances that, in turn, represent succeeding determinants of health. An example of this would be low-income homes being linked to increased illness and disability, which in turn represents a social determinant (illness and disability) that is associated with scares opportunities for education thus perpetuating poverty (Reading & Wien, 2009). Resources and opportunities are distributed unevenly in Canada with clear inequities amount Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal families. Taking a look at education, it is evident that despite the increasing numbers in aboriginal peoples achieving post-secondary diplomas there remains scarcity in educational opportunities for most adults. This leads to an inability to promote education among their children. About 22% of Aboriginal youth leave or are forced to leave high school leading to diminished levels of literacy and employment. This creates a dim future for their kids and feeds a never ending cycle of poverty (Reading & Wien, 2009).   Health statistics confirms the sad reality that First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children face serious health and social disparities when compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. Data gathered in 2016 by Statistics Canada revealed that one in two First Nations children living on reserves live in a state of poverty and are more likely than non-indigenous children to live in overcrowded and deteriorated homes. They also face high levels of indoor air pollution and have no access to clean drinking water. They face serious limitations in nutrition and necessary developmental stimulation. They are exposed to higher levels of maternal depression, domestic violence and are delayed in receiving healthcare for developmental disorders and early childhood illnesses . With these factors in mind, it is no surprise that they are also less likely than non-indigenous children to partake in any form of early learning or child care programs (Ball, 2019). In 1996, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended that federal, provincial, and territorial governments join together to create an integrated early childhood funding plan that does five things, (1) provides early childhood education to all Aboriginal children regardless of residence; (2) promotes programs that foster the physical, social, intellectual and spiritual development of children ,(3) pushes for Aboriginal agency over service design and implication; (4) offers one-stop accessible funding; and (5) promotes parental involvement and choice in early childhood education options (Doerr, 2006) .The reality today is that throughout Canada, community-based IELCC (Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care) initiatives are repressed by shortages in key factors including adequate and sufficient facilities and learning resources, fully trained personnel, sustained funding for salaries and facilities up-keep, and alliances with relevant programs and sectors (Ball, 2019)

"In Canada, massive, recurring colonial government assaults on Indigenous Peoples have shaken the foundations of Indigenous child, family, and community wellness. Since contact, programs to deplete the very soil that sustains Indigenous peoples have included engineered epidemics, appropriation of land, suppression of hunting rights and cultural expression, the reservation system, residential schools, forced removals of children for adoption, and government failure to fulfill its responsibilities, resulting in ongoing deprivations and indignities. These actions taken by the Canadian government continue to traumatize its indigenous people (Jagger, 2019, pg.233)"

please educate yourself. stop asking Indigenous people to explain the details of the genocide that happened when their land was taken. stop treating it like it was too long ago. do your own research and instead look at what you can do to help. call out the leadership in your area. make them listen.
i don’t need you to like this poem.
i need you to read it.
