In “The 57 Bus” by Dashka Slater, the agender teen, Sasha, needs a pit stop to go to the bathroom. The bus he is traveling on stops so he can go but he comes out of the gas station saying, “There’s no bathroom for me.” Debbie, Sasha’s Mother, was furious at Them. “Was this really how Sasha was going to go through life—with their bladder full to bursting?” In another chapter of the book, Sasha asks his father, who is a kindergarten teacher, about the bathroom line and asked, “What about the kids who aren’t either one?” Then one year, Karl had a boy who liked to dress as a princess and a girl who talked about being a boy someday. ~ I feel like everyone should have the right to choose their own gender and bathroom choices without anyone else’s consent. Because why? Because people need to learn that you can be whoever you want to be, and they need to accept that.

Richard had been tried as an adult and charged with a hate crime, for lighting Sasha (an agender teen) on fire, causing severe burns all over their legs. What he did to Sasha was an absolutely horrendous crime,but being tried as an adult? That seems a bit extreme for a 16 year old. Should there have been some leniency? Sasha deserved justice, but how should they get it? We will find more answers as we dive deeper into the book.

The moment Richard lit the small, almost unidentifiable flame, Sasha's skirt erupted in an inferno. With the help of others they put out the flames, but not without damage, leaving Sasha with 2nd and 3rd degree burns all down their legs. The fire had burned through skin left behind a white looking char which was actually the fat on their leg. An estimated 22% of their body was burnt. It took weeks of indescribable pain before Sasha was back to normal. That doesn't even mention the emotional pain they went through.

Always think before you act, because you never know what could happen to someone. If Richard had been thinking this wouldn't have happened!
