SOCIAL MEDIA SURVIVAL ⚠︎·˚
Tumblr media
INTRODUCTION ༄
Hey there folks! So, we are diving into a survival game plan that’s not just virtual; it’s real life. Picture this: a world in crisis and disaster strikes. Communication is the key for survival. Then, emerge a savior in the midst of chaos – social media. The unique ways social media has been put to good use for humanity has been amazing and we will be dissecting these instances here today. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM RESILIENCE 𓆑
Tumblr media
So, let’s begin with the one thing that is hard to deny for, I’m pretty sure, everyone. Social media earned its crown for being one of the most resilient communication systems in this modern day. When disaster strikes, our traditional communication systems may crumble, but fear not! Social media steps in as the unsung hero, providing a lifeline when we need it the most. Social media has been widely used to spread important information before, during and even after an emergency crisis (Cvetkovic, 2023). It’s not just about sharing meme; it’s about sharing critical information in real-time.
DIVERSE INFORMATION CHANNELS ⌕
Tumblr media
But wait, there’s more! There’s plenty of information to consume from social media, which means that also applies to the channels of information these come from. Information flows through social media like a river during a flood. We’re talking emergency services, news media, and even your next-door neighbour, all in the same digital space.  According to Robbins (n.d.), not only would you get details like emergency phone numbers, the location of hospitals in need of blood donations, evacuation routes, you would also get requests for help, the real current situation of the area and more which could be utilized to give advice. R.I. Ogie (2019) also states that valuable data that can be obtained or collected such as emergency management is easier to obtain with the development of social media from the diverse channels available. When every second counts, social media becomes the ultimate information highway!
EMERGENCY SERVICES AND NEWS MEDIA INTEGRATION ᵎᵎ
Tumblr media
Speaking of channels, social media has a few channels that is directly connected to the official news media and emergency services. No longer confined to traditional broadcasts, they can now harness the swift nature of social media in reporting breaking news, connect with audiences and provide real-time updates. It’s not just about boots on the ground; it’s about fingertips on the keyboard, strategically navigating the digital world for the greater good.
CROWDSOURCING INFORMATION જ⁀➴
And let’s not forget about crowdsourcing information. Imagine a map, not of territories, but of real-time crisis data, all thanks to the power of the crowd. It’s known that crowdsourcing for disaster management have been very advantageous for near real-time data collection, cost savings, improved crisis communication, locational cues for where assistance is needed and improved situational awareness and ground truth (Ogie, 2019). So, to boil it down, it’s a digital army, uniting for a common cause – survival.
HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE COORDINATION 𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
Tumblr media
Every emergency crisis that occurs would definitely have multiple organizations that would come into play. Organizations worldwide use social media as a digital war room. Coordination, resource allocation, and strategic planning – all happening in good ol’ social media platforms. When the world needs to know you’re safe, social media bridges the gap. An organization in mind, would be the American Red Cross organization. They have been using social media for years now to assist communities in need. Their Facebook page for instance, has over 830 000 likes has been one of their main community platforms to spread crucial information during a crisis (Peterson, 2017). The heroes behind the scenes are not just in uniforms or newsrooms; they are also the people behind the screen spreading crucial information for the public.
CONCLUSION ⟡
So, there you have it folks! In the grand scheme of the survival game plan, social media is the ultimate power up for survival! From resilient communication systems to global coordination, social media platforms are not just about virtual connections; it’s about real-world impact. Remember, stay connected, stay informed, and as always thanks for reading!

SOCIAL MEDIA WELLNESS 🌐✨
Tumblr media
INTRODUCTION : ̗̀➛
Hello Internet and welcome back! So, folks today we’re diving deep into the ever-evolving landscape of public health and the unlikely hero – social media. Buckle up as we uncover the twists and turns where social platforms become the digital stage for health advocacy. So, the matters that we are going to uncover right now can really boil down into 4 main buckets – role of social media in public health campaigns, community engagement in mental initiatives, normalization of mental health conversations and access to real-time information and support. So, let’s just take them point by point, shall we?
The Digital Stage for Public Health ┊┊
Tumblr media
So, bucket number one, the roles of social media in public health campaigns. Public health campaigns, my friends, are the unsung heroes of our digital age. Social media apps like Twitter (or known as X now), Instagram, TikTok or Facebook are not just platforms; they’re like the cinematic universe where health advocacy takes the centre stage. It’s like Marvel but with wellness tips instead of superheroes. You see, social media is one of the most powerful tools to talk about public health information and enable rapid and widespread communication. I feel like everyone would understand this, knowing that back in 2020, the big corona (COVID-19) happened and social media was one of the best places to help keep us informed, regardless whether that was in Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. A study done by Al-Dmour et al. (2020), shows that social media has significantly improved public health defences against the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only in public health awareness, but also in public health behavioural changes.
Communities Assemble! ✭
Tumblr media
But it’s not just about broadcasting information. Social media is the main hub for communication – and who are the ones communicating? Us! Social media is not just some big megaphone for health info; but a two-way conversation. A community hub where people can openly share their mental health journeys.  A great movement that people engage in would be the Movember movement. The Movember foundation focuses on an issue that is not really talked about a lot; men’s health issues. The movement is dedicated to help men who suffer from prostate cancer, mental health and more. It raises awareness by challenging the public to not shave their moustache or beard for the whole month of November. According to Cole (2019), Movember has raised over $900m for men’s health to date.
Destigmatizing Mental Health -ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈
One thing that is really great coming from all this is the normalisation of mental health conversations. Saying you have mental illness doesn’t turn heads in a bad way or become a taboo. It’s now empowering and hopeful rather than intimidating or humiliating. Did you know that over 11 billion views have been received by millions of videos with the hashtag #MentalHealth? (Marais, 2023). It’s amazing how social media can help break the ice and reshape society’s view of mental well-being into something that we don’t need to be afraid of. No one needs to be alone or feel alone, especially for their mental health; and destigmatizing this helps people to seek help free of judgement from others.
Info Dump Extravaganza ( ꩜ ᯅ ꩜;)
Tumblr media
Let’s move on to the last bucket which is real-time information and support. Social media is a goldmine of information and researches extravaganza. No matter what social media platform you’re on, it can serve as a real-time infographics or video on public health. It’s just the at the tip of our fingers to find tips or coping mechanisms on health. Not only that, exposes us to the symptoms that we should be more aware of that might need further inspection. There’s a slurry of videos or posts in Instagram or TikTok where people remind others to check and be more aware of our bodies and mind for irregularities. A recent one that has been going around on TikTok lately would be Pink October which is also known as #BreastCancerMonth. A lot of TikTokers have been posting reminders for ladies and girls to self-check breast examination and support those who have been affected (Newsroom TikTok, 2021).
You need therapy. 𖠋
Tumblr media
Yes, I said 4 buckets but 1 big bucket that needs to be addressed especially now is that social media and public health awareness in social media are not your therapists. Social media can be a lot of great things but social media therapy? Let’s unpack this. The social media is just a vending machine spitting out general advice but it would never be personally tailored to one individual but it seems like people – especially younger people – claim to have mental health symptoms that are, in fact, not actual indicators of mental illness. According to Marais (2023), through social media young people were teaching each other how to have tics. This not only is harmful in misdiagnosing themselves, but also might make it harder for mental health professionals to diagnose a person or even lead to insufficient or ineffective treatment. It’s always important always seek professional help! Diagnosing is complicated and is crucial to have a full clinical assessment to get proper diagnosis and treatment.
CONCLUSION (づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ
Tumblr media
As we reach the end of this post, let’s remember; the fusion of public heath and social media is a powerful duo but do treat it lightly. It’s great for raising awareness, help people who have been affected, and remind you that you’re not alone nut when it comes to mental health, consult the pros. That is all and always, thanks for reading!

BEYOND THE SCREEN OF SOCIAL GAMING
Tumblr media
INTRODUCTION * ʰ͙ᵉ͙ˡ͙ˡ͙ᵒ͙
Greeting, folks! Today, we’re going to dive headfirst into the realm where pixels meet passion, and controllers become conduits of connection. The digital realm where a new era dawned. That’s right, the beauty of social gaming and how digital communities form around them.
Tumblr media
GLOBAL COMMUNITY ‗ ❍
Online gaming isn’t about scoring headshots or levelling up. It’s where people all around the world, from different backgrounds and cultures gather to plug in and play together. Games are great catalysts to create communities and make real connections with people formed in the fantastical realms of the gaming universe. A great example of how people could connect and stay connected through games was the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Animal Crossing helped created a virtual space for people to spend time with their loved ones when they couldn’t physically. Even though the pandemic and the lockdown that followed have drastically changed the way we live, video games provide a safe haven for us to fulfil our fundamental urge to connect (Basu, 2020).
Tumblr media
EMERGENCE OF ESPORTS ☄. *. ⋆
When we talk about the gaming community, it’s hard to not talk about esports as it’s the heartbeat of the online gaming community. It’s not just about the games; It’s about the rivalries, the fandoms, and the collective experience of cheering for your favourite pixelated gladiators. The esports and gaming industry would probably be nothing without the support of their communities. Given of the increased social aspect of video games, players are becoming more involved in developing social networks (Masterson, 2021). On top of that, each of them is unique and as devoted that is on par with football or rugby or tennis. The platforms given to socialise and communicate vary including online media sites like Reddit and Discord and events such as tournaments and gaming conventions. Conventions are like the real-world checkpoints in our online odyssey. Pixels become tangible, avatars turn into faces, and the digital bond transforms into a physical handshake. They could also interact through casual or ranked online lobby play through the games they like (Walczak, n.d.).
Tumblr media
STREAMING & CONTENT CREATION ˘͈ᵕ˘͈
Now other than esports, a big chunk from the gaming community would come from influencers – the content creators shaping the narrative. Live streams, Let’s Plays, and the occasional theories and speculations. They’re the architects of the gaming culture. The best I’d like to talk about is the game that took the world on storm is the Five Nights at Freddy’s game series – also known as the FNAF game series. It started out as a small indie horror game released in 2014 but once content creators started making playthroughs of them through online platforms such as Youtube, Twitch and more, a community slowly grew for the FNAF series. The ecstasy and frustration are shared and felt even beyond the screen when watching a playthrough. From there, people watching these influencers gave a platform for others to join the FNAF community (Bycer, 2015).
Tumblr media
CHALLENGES OF TOXICITY & HARASSMENT ↺
But of course, every rose has its thorns. The digital utopia isn’t without its challenges. Toxicity and harassment are very present and threatening the very foundation of our beloved gaming community. Gamers occasionally attempt to normalise toxic behaviour in the gaming culture. A study In United States shows that over 80 million gamers – five out of six persons aged 18 to 45 reported to have encountered abuse while playing online multiplayer games and about 14 million adolescent gamers – three out of every five, between ages 13 and 17 – reported having been harassed while playing online multiplayer games (The Robert Belfer Family et al., 2021). It’s a serious problem and can be detrimental for several reasons. Not only can it be bad for the online players, it’s also bad for the game developers as it can give a bad reputation being associated to such activities.
Tumblr media
ADDICTION ☒☒☒
So, what are the social impacts of social gaming? One thing to note about games are; they are addicting. The cycle of the short dopamine boost you get when winning a level or accomplishing something in the game is a great feeling to have. But gaming addiction can be devastating to social consequences. It could seriously damage one’s relationships with friends and family. Ignoring people to game continuously for hours can lead to arguments and confrontations and even marriage problems. Some would only talk about their preferred game so much that it could result is others no longer wanting to be around them. They are unable or unwilling to interact with people in the real world or to offer friends and family support or encouragement.
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 100%
And there you have it, folks! As we traverse in the digital realm, one thing is evident – the online gaming community is more than a collection of players: it a living breathing entity, a testament to the power of shared experiences, connectivity, and the spirit of gamers around the globe.

INTRODUCTION *.~
Tumblr media
Hi there folks and welcome back! So today we are going to dive into the realm where pop culture and social activism collides. Yes, that’s right – a topic that I think that is not only intriguing but also relevant. Theres no doubt that everyone and anyone who is online has heard of the word fandom and what it consists of. However, to formally define what it is, according to Cambridge University Press (n.d.), it is a community of supporters - who are typically the more devoted ones, of something or someone. From BTS to Harry Potter, fandoms have become one of the driving forces behind many significant social and political movements. It’s not just about loving your favourite characters; it’s about leveraging that love to make a difference.
Fandom as Supportive Communities 彡
Tumblr media
One of the most significant instances fandoms have impact in social activism is through charity events and fundraising. Fans from different backgrounds and different nationalities pool together their resources and raise substantial amounts of money for causes they’re passionate about. One that is most notable was the Black Lives Movement where the BTS army donated more than $1 million dollars through campaigning in Twitter. The charity named One in an Army was trending on Twitter with their hashtag #MatchAMillion where hundreds and thousands donated in support (Madden, 2020). Hence, shows that the sense of belonging in a community that fandoms usually create provides a powerful motivator for activism. People are more likely to engage in social issues when they feel like they are a part of a supportive community that share the same values. It’s not just about being a fan; it’s about finding a community that shares your passion for change.
Fandom, Pop Culture and Activism ✎
Pop culture references are often adopted by fandoms to highlight social issues. They use their favourite characters and tales as a platform for discussion and change advocacy in their fan fiction, fan art, and other works of material. The discussions made can help increase public awareness and also be used to influence public opinion, bring about social change and have an impact on political choices (Chowdhury, 2023). It can affect the attitudes, behaviours, and beliefs of people and is frequently viewed as a reflection of societal views and values. Pop culture, for instance, can have a significant impact on how young people perceive gender roles, relationships, and body image.  In a way, it could be a platform, or a hub for education and advocacy where fans can share information, resources and research on important issues to help inform and mobilise their communities.  It's a brilliant way to connect with a broader audience and show how even fictional worlds can reflect and influence real-world issues.
Media representation : ̗̀➛
“Representation in the fictional world signifies social existence. Absence means symbolic annihilation.” - George Gerbner
In many ways, fandoms could also influence the media by advocating for better representation. The impact goes beyond the screen. When fans rally behind a call for representation, it sends a clear message to the entertainment industry that their target audiences crave authenticity and relatability.  This pushes creators and the media landscape to more diverse and inclusive characters and storylines. For instance, Black Panther and Shang Chi which represents the black and Asian community in the big screens. The value of one's own identity, culture, and ancestry is emphasised in both films (Raafeke, 2021). It’s natural for fans to long for their cultures or something that fans can see in themselves in the big screens and being represented. And fandoms give a platform to voice these concerns to the entertainment industry for better representation. So, the next time you see a campaign for better representation, remember: it's not just a call for diversity; it's a demand for authenticity and a celebration of the myriad voices that make our world extraordinary.
Challenges and controversies -ˋˏ✄
Tumblr media
But of course, no community is free of faults. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows in the world of fandom-driven activism. Differences between fandoms can lead to conflicts or promote toxic behaviour. It has been well documented that fandoms can have harmful effects. So, what are these harmful effects? Well, the most common and highly known to people are increased fan involvement in bullying – or rather cyberbullying. Threats of murder, sexist remarks, slurs about race, and intimidation are sadly common in the fan group culture even though some may disagree. One of the most popular cyberbullying cases we know would be of Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez, one of the most followed people on Instagram faces cyberbullying by Justin Bieber’s fans but now, inclusive of Haily Bieber’s fans. According to reports, cyberbullies are significantly more destructive since they are able to specifically target parts of her that she finds undesirable (ABC News, 2017). Balancing the positive impact with the challenges is a tightrope act that every fandom must navigate.
Tumblr media
Long-term commitment ╰┈➤
Now, let's talk about a crucial aspect often overlooked in the world of fandom-driven activism – the long-term commitment. It's not just about a momentary spark; it's about sustaining that flame over time, turning a movement into a lasting force for change. Especially now, in the era of the internet, it’s so easy to get swept up in the initial wave of activism. Hashtag trends, charity campaigns that goes viral, but what happens when it’s no longer trending? Some fandoms may understand the issues they care about are not solved overnight and needs continuous engagement even though the spotlight dims.
CONCLUSION ツ
Tumblr media
So, there you have it folks. Fandoms are more than just a gathering of fans; they’re a force to be reckoned with for change, a platform for education, and a catalyst for social activism. Keep that in mind the next time you join your favourite fandom. Your passion could be the key to making the world a better place. And remember, whether it’s fighting for justice in a fictional world or the real one, you can make a difference. Until next time!

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram?
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! Something that I think has been slept on for quite a while now is blogging and its time to talk about it. Living in a generation that is captivated by large social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, we tend to get so caught up in current trends that previous trends get drowned and forgotten. Now, strap up because we are going to dive deep into it.
Blogging: The beginning of online content.
Tumblr media
Blogging was a worldwide phenomenon when it comes to having online content in the early days on internet. It was one of the main sources of content where people can share anything one can imagine in the internet. So, what is blogging and how is it the start of online content creation? As stated by Maulidina (2023), a ‘blog’ which is short for “weblog” refers to an online diary or informational website, made by an individual or group. Bloggers were the original influencers as blogging help express people’s thoughts on things online. According to Gunn (2023), it is believed that the first blog created was back in 1994 by a student named Justin Hall. This shows that blogging has been around for a very long time in internet history. From there, blogging has been a thing for people to creatively and freely express their personal lives and thought in their own blogs.
The appeal of blogging
Tumblr media
There’s no denying that blogging has its own unique appeal to it since it was quite a big thing on the internet way before TikTok and Instagram. So, what makes blogging interesting in this day and age and is it still popular now? The appeal in blogging stems from the depth it provides that no social media can compete to. In blogging, the opportunity to dig deeper and truly explore a certain subject is completely feasible. This will also allow a more personal connection between the blogger and the audience. According to Bretous (2023), in terms of lead generation and brand exposure, blogs are still quite helpful. And consumers continue to like them. 60% of people read blogs at least once a week, according to a HubSpot research. Therefore, blogs won't be obsolete for marketers very soon.
Authencity and connection
Tumblr media
Blogging in the public’s eyes is often synonymous with authenticity unlike their predecessors such as TikTok and Instagram that is always plagued by misinformation and false facts. Blogs are a great space where people can be their own true self. The audience will appreciate the authenticity which will then establish a more personal connection. Not only that, it builds a trust and a good credibility which is important in online content creation and having a following on the internet. With being honest and transparent in witing a blogpost, it could also give a unique voice to the blogger and also to those who could relate to it.
The rise of TikTok and Instagram
Tumblr media
Of course, not long after, we see TikTok and Instagram being more popular nowadays than blogging. Not a person in this day and age who does not know what is a TikTok or an Instagram as it is that prevalent today. It has taken over anyone and everyone’s screens but we can’t deny its appeal. In my opinion, I think social media now would be very different without blogging ever appearing. Blogging walked first before 30-seconds clips could ever run. People are encouraged to speak their minds freely on the internet now because of how blogging was designed to be. We, now, should appreciate it more and maybe explore it more.
The hybrid approach
I’ve seen more and more content creators are adapting the blogging format into their online content now and I think that is exciting. They have found a way to merge the old and new in TikTok and Instagram to compliment their short clips with creating a blog to offer a deeper context to their content. It's a perfect harmony of mediums.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
So, to answer back the big question, is blogging still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram? I’d say it is a resounding yes. While the internet has changed a lot from the start of it, blogging still lives on until now – just in a different look. It is still thriving and living and I don’t think it will be leaving anytime soon. There is no question that blogging has earned its place in the online content creation space on the internet regardless whether that impact is positive or negative. Blogging still holds its own credibility and niche community with its own appreciation.  As the saying goes, nothing beats the classics.
