Lost in Translation (2003)
“The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you.”
“But I don’t know what I’m supposed to be. I tried being a writer, but I hate what I write. I tried taking pictures, but they’re so mediocre.”
Every soul has its path but sometimes that path is not clear.
‘Lost in Translation’ is a tale of two lost souls in the heart of Tokyo as they are both searching for answers, trying to make sense of their lives and looking for a change but not sure what that is, what they are looking for. Both seem jaded and depressed, going through life without a purpose and just go with the flow.
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a fading American movie star who arrives in Tokyo to appear in lucrative advertisements for Suntory whisky. He stays at the upscale Park Hyatt Tokyo and is suffering from strains in his 25-year marriage and a midlife crisis.
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is another American staying at the same hotel, is accompanying her husband John while he works as a celebrity photographer in Japan. Charlotte is feeling similarly disoriented as she questions her recent marriage and is unsure about her future.
They both grapple with additional feelings of culture shock in Tokyo and often pass the time by lounging around the hotel. Bob and Charlotte frequently happen upon each other in the hotel and eventually acquaint themselves, becoming friends in this strange place. As they spend more time together, they began sharing intimate conversation about their respective lives.
