This foaling year has been the absolute roughest, and while I’ve been thru some rough ones, this one just takes the cake. Last baby is on the ground… and 4hrs away in the ICU 😞 Hoping to hear she makes it thru the night 🤞🤞

Edit 4/21- Filly is still with us, and is starting to improve! ❤️

Edit 5/2- Filly had been doing really, really well but is now going downhill, unfortunately. Bastard antibiotic resistant bug has gone from her navel to her lungs and now starting to go into her joints. The vets are going to try one last push, but if she doesn’t improve then there’s nothing further that will fix her. I actually got to see her on her last good day(29th), was really hoping I’d get to bring her home sometime soon. Fucking sucks. Hoping for a miracle

Edit 5/3- It spread too far, too fast; literally overnight went from uncomfortable to nearly unmanageable pain due to the uncontrollable joint infections spreading like wildfire. She was sent to that great pasture in the sky around noon. Vets are going to necropsy and see if they can learn anything. Really fucking sucks

Had a foal about 3 weeks ago that would not breathe and passed. Fucking sucked.

Just saw another mare foaling and came down and opened the barn doors to the worst gasping sound I’ve heard. Stupid child turned their head all the way back around in the water bag and had it plastered over their face 🤦 Thankfully mare was great and let me pull it off, but holy fuck can I please catch a break please

Edit: It’s a filly! And she’s red 🥲 No breaks caught. I do really like her tho, definitely going to breed the cross again.

2 weeks later- Another mare tears all the way up thru her rectum! Great! Fuck this foaling year!

Nothing worse then finally foaling out the baby you’ve been so excited for all year… and then he won’t breathe.

Heartbreak is always going to be a part of life, and especially a part of raising animals, but it still sucks no matter what.

Today sucks.

Picked up my suicidal foal from the clinic and on the way back got a phone call from the help-

“There a mare in the retired mare pen that can’t move her back legs, can’t move her front legs, has a swollen leg that looks like cellulitis or pigeon fever, and she has a tick on her withers so she’s got lyme!”

I facepalmed heavily, then told them to just wait right there with her and I’d be back and up there as soon as I could and we’d figure out what it was.

They were 0/5. I rolled up to a horse with a broken leg.

She was an absolute angel about it though, loaded right up for me, and back to the vet we went. I pulled thru the breeze-way and they ultrasounded and x-rayed her in the trailer. And then sent her off to that great, green pasture in the sky.

Her name was Dakota, and she’s been one of my favorite mares for almost 23 years. I still have her daughter, Precious, who had her first daughter, Indy, this spring. She was out of the mare we called Paint, because she was one of set of twins out of which one was a tovero and the other a solid, and who’s mother was the original Ember who my mom sold because she was tired after panicking over three surviving sets of twins lol.

I know shit happens and all animals die eventually, but this one really hurts

Neighbor’s old horse got out and neither of them would answer their phones. Thankfully she’s good broke and my quick halter lives wrapped around the headrest in my truck. She very politely walked next to my truck the mile or so back to her home and I ended up just sticking her inside the fence and closing the gate. Owner text me back about 30min later that he’d be back in an hour to come get her. My dude, I’m not going to babysit your horse for 2hrs. Told him ‘she’s on your property with the gate closed have fun’ and he was cool with it, thankfully. And all this was after a colic run to the vet this morning and going to pick up my groceries(thankfully my ice cream wasn’t too melted in my back seat lol)

This was quite the interesting show, to say the least

My 4yo, with around maybe 8mo riding over 2yrs, won her money class and was 3rd out of 10 in her Am class full of senior and finished horses. Looks like we(read: I) need to really start stepping up and get to training on other things as well so we can start showing a little fuller slate of classes next year…

And then the yearling that I brought just to start getting travel/show broke went out and won her flipping Am In Hand Trail class of 15! With only 2mo of 15min lessons! We got very lucky and she was very clean and on her best behavior, but I still can’t believe it happened. She was tired for the money class tho and let me know it in the first obstacle, and then was perfect the rest of the time, so I definitely know she’s going to take after her mother. But she did win a couple hundred bucks anyway and payed her way, plus she got to experience a ton of new things and lots of horses, donkeys, and mules. She also got to walk in a color class of 30 horses in the main arena, that was a big event for her that she really took in stride. She’s going to be really fun to start riding!

I was so tired this morning that I clucked to my truck as I pushed on the accelerator. I wish I was making that up, but I’m not.

Also, the only time it poured down rain today was when I was riding. Literally was just sprinkling off and on all day, but when I was in the saddle it was coming down so hard I couldn’t hear my music thru my headphones.

I hurt…

One horse in two age divisions of four classes and another one in one division of six classes, plus working the youngster in-hand after dinner. And all this after a 5am start to a 10hr drive yesterday and then starting the show at 7:30 this morning.
