WAIT *dominic monaghan voice* are you watching harlots? have you watched harlots? will you watch harlots? when will you watch harlots?
( i always enjoy reading your opinions, would love to know your thoughts about the series! i really enjoyed the first season )
i started watching it while wizard high the other week! ive seen all but one episode of season one i think? and i'm really enjoying it ! i am not a historian of anything so i never know whether period things are like. doing a good job of being accurate or not but to the layman (me) it seemed very well done .
i don't have a lot to say by virtue of being truly blasted while watching but i'm having a good time. which feels weird to say about a show that's so brutal, but it just feels like. ok yes we're finally talking about it (the ubiquity of sexual violence)!!! i think the characters are so well-drawn and the dynamics between miss wells and miss quigley as well as their respective dynamics within their own houses and families are RICH, to say the least.
there's some really interesting stuff being done with the family form as it comes into focus as a point of comparison for different economic relationships and modes of exchange -- i think it's charlotte who has a line to the effect that she sees margaret as her pimp which makes her the opposite of the mother she's supposed to be, but like. if we think in terms of the tradition of exogamous marriage, parents are very much like pimps, at least where their marriageable daughters are concerned! margaret wants to marry her daughters off precisely because she has a parent's investment in their futures and views selling them as the only way for them to have a better life. which does not justify her actions, but provides an interesting framework through which to examine the economics of the family and to consider whether or not it differs meaningfully from from the economics of the brothel.
it's interesting to see how margaret and lydia's children are sheltered from some aspects of the business while doubly obligated to participate in others. harriet's storyline of joining the house in order to buy back her children after she learns that her husband had not freed them as he'd claimed to adds another sense in which the family can be read as compatible with the capitalist property relations to which it purports to provide an antidote. and even for those in the show who do manage to find a measure of relief in relationship, the show makes a point to foreground how each and every bond is strained by the unceasing pressure to always be turning a profit in order to keep from going under .

Chapters: 47/? Fandom: Harlots (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Isabella Fitzwilliam/Charlotte Wells Characters: Isabella Fitzwilliam, Charlotte Wells, Nancy Birch, William North (Harlots), Fanny Lambert, Lucy Wells Additional Tags: Forgiveness, Femslash, Historical, Not Canon Compliant, Love, Bathing/Washing, Napping, Tea, Love Letters, Fine Dining, carriage ride, Affection, making amends, Wine, mention of violence, Oral Sex, Fucking, Lesbian Sex, Cunnilingus, Emotions, Emotional Sex, Intoxication, Dissociation, Anger, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Psychological Trauma Summary:
It’s a typical morning at the Greek Street house of pleasure. Charlotte and Lucy are spatting, there are culls that need servicing, and Charlotte is in a very bad mood. She doesn’t care for the life of a bawd, she has too much responsibility, and there is no fun in her life. She’s very, very tired and wishes she could take a few days to herself. Nancy tries to talk to Charlotte to get her to face her feelings and her fears. She can’t hide away from her feelings for Isabella for ever. Charlotte decides she is absolutely right and takes steps to resolve that ‘thing’ between her and Isabella that was vexing her days and tormenting her nights.
Context wise, Margaret Wells has been shipped off to America, Dame Death is in Beldam, Harcourt has been neutralized, but Charlotte and Isabella have not spoken yet. This story fits into the in-between time from S2 E8 and S3 E1. I find it hard to believe that Charlotte would just forgive Isabella so quickly and easily, however, since she does, it speaks volumes to the love that they shared.

it’s the way that no other show has ever managed to portray women as well as a 24-episodes-total show about 18th century sex workers did….. Harlots was like. here’s women being good and evil and morally grey and scared and brave and empowered and abused and loving and hateful and cunning and dumb and everything in between. here’s an all-female creative team and almost-all-female cast and here’s a story about mothers and daughters and female friendships and female rivalries. here’s a show that explores the complexities and nuances of sex work - how it can be dangerous and traumatic AND how it can offer freedom and hope and independence. Weirdly the only show that i think maybe compares in its total dedication to an honest, real depiction of womanhood is fucking Call The Midwife. A show about whores and a show about nuns. Those are the two pinnacles of female rep in TV media.

Imagine being there for Nancy after she’s flogged in the streets.
Tumblr media
It had been a horrendous sight. Each crack of the whip leaving its mark on Nancy’s flesh. And each time it sounded it was as if you felt the sting along with her. Every cruel second that passed felt like an eternity, but finally it was over.
You ran to her the first moment you were able. Curled up and in bed, you could tell she was in a world of pain. “Nancy,” you began.
“Leave,” she managed to say, though even that simple utterance sounded pained.
“No,” you told her firmly. She may want to be alone, but that’s not what she needed right now. She needed those wounds tended to, and a kind hand to do it for her. “I’m staying until you’re cleaned and bandaged. I’m not letting you die over this.”
You helped her sit up. She winced and you couldn’t blame her. You’d witnessed that beating and she’d likely hurt for weeks to come. She didn’t fight you when you removed her shirt. As you tended to her wounds, she finally spoke again, turning to look at you.
“Why do you care so much?”
“Because Nance, I love you and it hurts me to see you hurt. I need you to survive this because I can’t live without you.”
It appeared she wanted to reply, but her words failed her. Her cheeks tinted the faintest shade of pink and she looked away. How had she never realized?
