Of Monsters And Men – Dirty Paws (Good Life Remix)
http://ift.tt/1MRz2lH
Of Monsters And Men might be one of the best new alternative bands to come out in the last five years. In 2012, they released their first studio album called “My Head Is An Animal”, the title coming from a line from one of their best, and also underrated songs off the album called “Dirty Paws”. The song has a weird electronic feel, while also sticking too it’s roots of being alternative rock of the modern era. I’ve been waiting years for an acceptable remix to finally come out for this song, and have been disappointed at just about every encounter. None of them were really all that creative, and relied too heavily on the already established sounds, which is a common problem for remixes.
Enter this DJ called “Good Life”. This remix is just excellent, especially in terms of what this DJ did with messing with the hook. It’s completely different! And defies the original tones and melodies of the original song entirely in the hook, which is where a lot of problems lie with remixes. Good Life took a great song, and completely remastered it in to something different. Kudos Good Life, I will be checking out your work all of this week!

MS MR – Hurricane (Adventure Club Remix)
http://ift.tt/1GNle7F
Everybody knows MS MR at this point – they’re pretty ubiquitous in the alternative music scene. There have been remixes galore for them, mostly of this song “Hurricane”, which makes sense since it’s their more popular song by a wide margin. This remix, by Adventure Club, who i’ve written about a couple of times in the past, isn’t particularly enthralling. It’s limited in it’s creativity, and sort of depends entirely on the tempo of the original song by MS MR. But, I have to admit that I really like it for some reason. It just pleases my ears, which I guess is all you can ask from a song these days.

You’re On ft. Kyan (Gramatik Remix)
http://ift.tt/1xR5s5k
Gramatik is more known for remixes than for anything else. This one definitely lands as one of the better ones that I’ve heard from him in the last four or five months. Mainly because a lot of his style and sounds were getting really really stale. This is way fresher stuff than I have heard from him lately, and it’s a solid departure from the odd combination of house sounds with dubstep beats he’s more readily known for. All things considered, while it has the same iconic transitions – fast to slow tempo, autotuned backgrounds – it’s different enough that I think I can start listening to Gramatik again on the regular.

Lost Frequencies – Are You With Me (Kungs Remix)
http://ift.tt/1AL8RUO
If any of you have ever heard of Kungs, please reach out and let me know if you’ve ever seen them live. I found this on my SoundCloud home page when a DJ named Autograf had reposted it on his page. This is just a fantastic song, filled with a lot of great elements. The syngh piano is really the base of this beat, and in the background, the synthesized maracas shake things up, literally and figuratively. Based on the music here, I think that this DJ would kill it at pretty much any live show or festival. Really looking forward to more out of this guy.

What’s Going On With The Wizards?
The Wizards, going in to Sunday’s game against the Pistons, the Wizards had been an abysmal mess, having lost two straight games in spectacular fashion, while also losing 9 of their last 13 games. They’ve played a month long stretch horrendous basketball, during which they’ve fallen from second place in the Atlantic Conference to fifth place. After the 38-point demolishing they suffered from the Cavs last Friday at home, even that fifth place ranking seems sort of dubious, even in the context of how bad the entire Atlantic Conference is.
The Wizards, during their latest game with the Pistons, really spectacularly showed how they can take a sense of urgency, by turning a 3-point deficit in to an 11-point lead, and then pissing it away to end the game losing to the Pistons by an embarrassing 17-points. Sure the Wizards are hungry, scrappy, and talented and all that – but what it comes down to is that they just straight up, aren’t that good – and that’s what’s more important.
There must be someone to blame – this was one of the most hyped Atlantic Conference teams going in to the season, and John Wall’s play has been tremendous. Everyone thought going in to the middle of this season that the Wizards would be the only rival to the Cavs and Hawks for the Atlantic Conference title. However, it’s hard to say who’s most responsible for this tremendous collapse. Some would point their finger towards head coach Randy Wittman, which isn’t really fair. There’s a lot of factors that go in to making a good, competitive basketball team. And even if all the factors are there, they require consistent adjustment since not every aspect of a team is working at peak-performance consistently. A lot of these factors aren’t within the control of the coach anyway. However, night after night, one of the most important and one of the most stubborn things that a team is going to play against – apart from the opposing team, of course – is the fact that offensive efficiency exists, and it’s importance is paramount. Unfortunately, that’s a battle that Wittman has his team fighting against, on purpose, on top of their normal work and competitive duties.
It doesn’t matter who you are: watching the Wizards play offense is maddening, hilarious, and absolutely absent of any form of organization or development. Here’s the rundown of a typical Wizards offensive possession:
John Wall brings ball up to the wing on one side of the floor –> John Wall passes to player at top of the arc –> John Wall fights through a veritable forest of elbows through the wing, along the baseline, and back to the top of the arc, on the opposite side of the court –> John Wall catches a pass, leading him away from the basket –> offense resets.
That’s insane. There’s no real progress made for the ball to either get closer to the hoop, or for some off-the-ball movement to occur to open up a shooter at the elbows or in the posts. All it does is burn roughly 8-seconds off of the shot clock and get John Wall tired. The same exact result would occur if John Wall had brought the ball up the court on the opposite side of the wing.
This is just a single example in a long list of ways that the Wizards work against themselves. When this doesn’t work – and it never works – along with the other Sisyphean plays started by Beal and Wall, they resort to rushed high screen-and-roll plays that pretty much always end with dumping the ball off to Nene – poor poor Nene – in the post against a firmly entrenched defense, for him to throw up a fade away jumper 18-feet away from the hoop, with 14-seconds left on the shot clock.
Opposing teams long ago caught on to Wittman’s one novel offensive idea – designing pick-and-roll sets that take advantage of John Wall’s insane ability to whip accurate passes to the opposite corner of the court while also driving hard at the hoop – and, it turns out that Wittman doesn’t really have anything else up his sleeve for the Wizards to use to win. The entire process looks as effortful as could be, and don’t appear to have much in the way of purpose. These are all efforts to mimic, at least stylistically, efficient play from teams such as San Antonio and Atlanta, but it seems that some data has been lost in the import.

Don’t Wait (Giraffage Remix)
I’ve posted a few Mapei remixes of this song. The original is fantastic, and I think there have been like 30 good remixes of this song since it’s so remixable. But this one really stands out as being very fantastic. I highly recommend checking out Mapei’s SoundCloud page where they repost a lot of remixes. The page is below.

Naxxos – New Orleans
So, I have no clue about Naxxos. Never heard of them until my buddy sent me this song a few months ago. I was all about it for weeks, couldn’t stop listening too it. Then I just totally forgot about it until pretty recently, and when I rediscovered it last week, I just couldn’t stop listening too it. The horns are just marvelous, and this kind of song is something that you can’t help but start dancing too in your chair as you’re listening too it. The DJ is from Austria, which I never would have guessed, honestly. But, he certainly sounds pretty New Orleans too me. His page is filled with songs, so clearly he’s pretty active over the last year or so. But this is easily his best song – just look at the feedback on SoundCloud!

Jaymes Young – One Last Time (Felix Jaehn feat. Chris Meid Remix)
Jaymes Young isn’t really my kind of music to be honest. While i’m in to alternative music, there’s not really anything compelling about Jaymes Young. His voice is pretty average, and the beats that are on his songs are also pretty average. Like I said, nothing particularly compelling. However, this remix of his song “One Last Time” by Felix Jaehn is fantastic. I really like the use of the subtle xylophone tones throughout the low points of the beat between hooks. Really, really well done.
I was looking at Jaehn’s SoundCloud page and while there isn’t a lot of music there, the music that is there is pretty fantastic. Check him out at the link below and just enjoy.

Favela – Gong
http://ift.tt/1IKe4Bg
I’ve never heard of Favela – but I love them as of now. This song is so chill, and just so…so…soothing. I love music like this, where it’s both edgy, yet at the same time it’s really exciting and new, and something that you know you can listen too forever. I really really like Favela, and i’m going to Spotify and saving all of their albums, if they’re on there.

Deorro – Five Hours (Empia Remix)
http://ift.tt/1sqhirm
A buddy of mine sent me this track a day or two ago. I’ve listened too it a few times, and though I’ve been really in to it, I can’t tell whether or not this will be one of those songs that only trends for a day or two, and then just sort of gets lost in the ether that is the constantly updating state of electronic music. Regardless, I like it, and the original song is also fantastic, if you haven’t heard it.

José González – Heartbeats (filous & MOUNT Remix)
http://ift.tt/14CIUPJ
So, I love The Knife – they’re a fantastic duo and if you’ve ever heard their original track for Heartbeats, it’s one of my favorite songs that I can remember being introduced by a TV show (Entourage – Snow Job; in my opinion the best episode that show ever aired). José González recorded an acoustic version on his debut album Veneer, and it’s not the only occasion that the song has been covered. However, this remix by Filous & Mount of José González’s remix is fantastic – and pretty meta when you think about it.
However you feel about The Knife, this song is not an improvement – but it’s a welcome change to an already welcome change of an already fantastic song.

Ruddyp & Taquwami – Hold
http://ift.tt/14z0BzC
I posted this to my Soundcloud page a few days ago, but I’m posting it here because I just can’t stop listening to it. RuddyP & Taquwemi…I don’t know anything about who produced this track – the artist name doesn’t sound familiar at all. But, you can’t help the awesome stuff you find on Soundcloud – sometimes you’ll just have to live with not knowing who the artist is. But, all-in-all, despite not knowing anything about the track nor about the artist – I’m going to keep listening too it and not be bothered by the “who’s” and “what’s” of who made the track.

Sonic Future – Regrets (original mix)
http://ift.tt/1wjLZe7
Not sure if anyone has heard of Sonic Future, but if you have any other music to share by them, feel free to send it along to me on social media. This track is amazing, and I love how the beat is consistent throughout the track. There’s no highs or lows, and the tempo is pretty consistent – definitely a good dance groove song. If you’re looking to find a new track to listen to while you’re running, this is it.

The 5 Best TV Shows of 2014
2014 was a year full of fantastic TV. We saw HBO and FX both step up their games incredibly, while other networks provided us some fantastic content. Netflix has been releasing shows left and right, and with the rise of televisions show blogs on the web, TV shows have developed an entirely new facet to them – the weekly review. TV has exploded in terms of shows garnering a following, and this year was no exception. Arguably, some of the best television I’ve ever seen has come out this year, and below is a list of the top-10 best coming out in 2014.
1) Fargo (FX)
The cast of Fargo this year was headlined by Martin Freeman, as the cowardly, yet despicably cunning, lead man Lester Nygaard and Billy Bob Thornton as the eccentric hitman, Lorne Malvo, that sensationally reimagined Joel and Ethan Coen’s film by the same name. I’m a huge fan of the Coen Brothers, particularly of the movie Fargo, and was very apprehensive about FX remaking the film in to a loosely adapted television show. However, the show exploded, and I would argue, was the best season of television this year, and arguably the best season of television in the last 10 years (excluding premium networks like HBO, ShowTime, etc.). Colin Hanks and Allison Tolman put on fantastic performances and really showed us that a show isn’t just about the headliners, but about the cast as a whole. It goes to show you that you really can readapt a movie to a television format in some cases.
2) True Detective (HBO)
This was the year of McConaughey or, more aptly named, “The McConaussance”. That isn’t up for debate. He won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, and appeared in HBO’s True Detective, playing opposite of Woody Harrelson, a fantastic actor in his own right. True Detective was a revelation of the buddy-cop dynamic, where instead of the cops actually being buddies, they hate each other. McConaughey was a revelation in the show, as the show’s more dark and depressing, yet sort of hilarious, RusT Cole. The show was critically acclaimed, and will likely addeplenty to HBO’s already overflowing Emmy Award collection. Harrelson also was fantastic, balancing McConaughey’s presence on screen with a more affable and funny partner detective, though he had plenty of character issues himself.
3) Game of Thrones (HBO)
Whenever you’re talking about the best TV shows of the year, pretty much in any case, Game of Thrones is going to enter the conversation. This year’s season 4 of Thrones didn’t disappoint, featuring new characters, plenty of blood and gore, as well as some pretty amazing character developments and twists. The character shuffling ended with the best possible combinations, just the right characters died in the most poetic of ways, the expansive world started to shrink a little bit, and the story offered a lot of development and theory as to what the final endgame for the show is. What makes Game of Thrones truly great though is that it is unquestionably TV’s funnest show. For ten weeks every spring, Game of Thrones fever hits fans like wildfire, and I certainly can’t wait for Season 5 coming this spring, just like everybody else.
4) Shameless (ShowTime)
The raunchy, yet hilarious drama Shameless, has been one of TV’s most unsung shows for a while. Though it’s received great acclaim and has a pretty wide and dedicated fan base, people often forget it exists when it’s not on television. The show is incredibly memorable in my opinion, and is one of the few shows that actually gets better with each progressing season. This past season was Shameless’s 4th season, and extensively departed from the main general tone of the show. In seasons 1-3, you could rely on the Gallagher family getting away with just about any of their crazy antics, with little to zero consequences due to their almost fantastic crafty ways. But this season was an almost complete divergence from the previous seasons, showing that the Gallaghers will somehow, some way, lose their positive karma. This next season promises to be a blast again, and gives me something to look forward to in January.
5) Louie (FX)
Louis CK is, arguably, the funniest man on the planet right now. He’s developed such an amazing following that, despite his attempts to escape celebrity, he has pretty much become the face of stand-up comedy at this point. His show, Louie, is written, directed, and starred in by Louie, which gives him extensive creative independence when you consider the budget the show can survive on. This season featured Louie sleeping with models, delving in to his childhood, finally getting together with Pamela, and finding out that dirty jokes don’t work when you perform at charity events. The show is so insanely funny, yet realistic, that it evokes a feeling of sympathy and recognition with the show’s star. His kids are still adorable too.

Tom Misch & Carmody – So Close (Wild Culture Remix)
Never heard of Tom Misch and Carmody until today, but this song is excellent. It’s so super chill, and it’s literally a song I’ve listened to doing all sorts of things: studying, working out, walking about town, and much more. This is just one of those types of songs that you have to listen to 30-40 times before you can stop being into it, and even then, you’ll pop it on during parties whenever you’re on music duty. Just listen to it and bask in it’s awesomeness.

Cazzette – Blind Heart (Prince Fox Remix)
http://ift.tt/1xZnmaI
I’ve written about Cazzette before, and they are without question one of the best DJs out there. Right now, they are pulling tracks out of their hats left and right, letting a lot of smaller time DJs make their bones through remixes with already great songs. Enter Prince Fox, a relatively unknown DJ who’s killing it in the New York City club scene right now. This is just a sample of the great work Prince Fox can do.

Crooked Colours – Capricious (Paces Remix)
http://ift.tt/1po5SD1
It’s been a little while since my last post, but, I just got back from a long season of testing for school. Finally I’m back in the blogging game, and I’ve got to give a shout out to this remix of Capricious by Paces. I don’t know who Paces is, but the song came up at the top of my Soundcloud feed, and it’s awesome. The beat and the tempo are perfect for the lyrics, and the occasional steel drum is really cool in this song. Really everyone should check this DJ out, since the song itself is pretty fantastic.
