INA D MUSICVIDEO
Tumblr media
vimeo
official music video for INA D’s song “Changing”. by LSquadrat, Neotonie (www.neotonie.com), and helbiba coaching: Roland Lindner – decollage.tv London
This music video was created as a non-commercial project by Laura Sahin, Astrid Neumayr and Barbara Helbich at the BETA Young Creative Lab. After test shoots on different materials and with different types of animation they decided to make very basic abstract animations which are projected onto black cardboard cubes that are moved in the room. This way they are able to translate the dynamic of the sound into a new visual language. A three-dimensional look could be achieved that makes you wonder if the video is “real” or a product of 3D computer animation. Rather important was the conclusion at the end with the three of them moving the cubes and letting everything end in a colorful chaos.
Something that might be interesting: there was no manipulation of the raw-footage after the shooting, the only thing that was done in the postproduction was the cutting. Likes: 247 Viewed:

SwanQuake: House – Computer installation with sound 2007
Tumblr media
vimeo
SwanQuake is a unique project involving the ongoing making of an interactive artwork comprising 3-D computer graphic environments and motion-capture driven characters created from a variety of materials and methods by an interdisciplinary team gathered together and led by igloo. In each of the pieces, using a game controller, the viewer navigates freely throughout the 3D computer graphic environments.
The spaces are comprised of both exterior and interior landscapes, each thematically, visually & sonically distinct where users can interact with avatars to create new performances / performance spaces.SwanQuake is a surreal semi-abstract inhabited world, home to a series of potential encounters. These may be theatrical and dreamlike, sometimes uncanny perhaps even frightening, at times quotidian and familiar.
It’s these interactions that inspire curiosity, wonder and the desire to continue looking and sensing. However, despite the title ‘mashup’ of computer game Quake and traditional ballet Swan Lake, there are no targets, health points, wins or dying swans here…… More info: www.swanquake.com Likes: 7 Viewed:

Aeris Lignea – Custom Built Computer System and Desk
Tumblr media
vimeo
I am proud to present “Aeris Lignea”
Aeris Lignea, which means Copper and Wood, is a custom built computer desk with the computer and water cooling system integrated into the desk. The desk was entirely designed and built by me over the course of the last 6 months.
Before starting this project, I had never welded steel or sweated copper pipe. I learned as I went and made many practice pieces before attempting the real thing.
Once I had decided on the materials I wanted to use for the main desk construction, I started to design it out on paper. The biggest challenge I was going to face was that I wanted to make sure all the computer and cooling components stayed inside the 8″ wide I beam. I had to custom build all the mounts for every component to achieve this. I needed to use PCI-E Riser cables to extend from the motherboard to the 3 PCI-E cards (2x GPU’s and 1 NIC).
Another challenge was that I did not want any SSD’s or HDD’s visible. This is why I went with just the 2x M.2s. However since I am a video production guy, I needed to have a large amount of storage. To achieve this I actually built a separate 36TB storage server. This is housed in one of the other areas in the office. The desk system and the storage server are connected via a 10gb network. I am getting sustained transfer speeds of around 800MB/s.
Here are the specifications for the desk and computer: Desk Components – The frame is constructed out of 8″ wide steel I-Beam. – The desktop is 2″ thick African Zebra Wood. The two reservoir and pump towers are also made from Zebra Wood. – All the copper piping is 100% functional. They are carrying the water to and from the computer and cooling components.
Computer Components: -CPU: Intel i9-7980XE Delidded and Overclocked to 4.5Ghz -RAM: 128gb Corsair DDR4 running at 2666mhz -Motherboard: MSI X299 Gaming M7 ACK -GPUs: 2x EVGA 1080Ti Kingpin Hydrocopper Edition OC’d to 2083mhz -Storage: 2x Samsung 960 EVO 1TB nVME M.2 SSDs -PSU: EVGA 1600w P2 with full custom sleeved cable’s by me (using Teleios Carbon Sleeving). Network: ASUS 10gb Network adapter -Audio: Schiit Audio Modi2 DAC and Valhalla2 Tube Amplifier with Beyerdynamic DT770 250ohm headphones.
Cooling Components (Dual Loop System): -Pumps: 4x EKWB D5s -Reservoirs: 4x EKWB 250mL X3s -Waterblocks: EKWB Monoblock -Radiators: 2x EKWB 480mm Coolstream XE -Fans: 8x Coolermaster Masterfan Pro AirBalance -Piping: 1/2″ Copper -Fittings: EKWB Compression -Flow Meters: LZT M15 Mechanical Fluid Meter
Some fun specs: -Total weight of the desk is roughly 600lbs. -There is 87ft of copper tubing to complete the watercooling runs. -There are 120 copper fittings, all of which needed to be sweated together -All the copper piping has been sprayed with a matte clear coat finish to protect them from turning green over time. -The total volume of coolant for the system is 9.7L. -To fill the loops I need to use a 500gph pond pump to force the water into the system. I can have both loops filled and purged of air within 15 minutes. -Over 90% of the wiring is not visible unless you are on your back looking at the bottom of the desk. -The LED lighting on the desk is actually the Philips HUE light strips so they can be controlled even if the computer is off. The overall size of the desk is 7ft wide, 3.5ft deep, and 33″ tall.
I need to give a HUGE shout-out to my wife for letting me do this. I spent more time away from home trying to get this thing done than I probably should have. I also need to give a massive shout out to Dave at Hughes Manufacturing. It was his shop that I did the majority of the fabrication. He taught me everything about welding and sweating copper pipe. I couldn’t have pulled this off without him.
If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to ask!

Exascale Computing and Big Data
Tumblr media
vimeo
Daniel A. Reed discusses “Exascale Computing and Big Data” (https://ift.tt/2DKyyAv), a Contributed Article co-authored by Jack Dongarra in the July 2015 Communications of the ACM.
— SCRIPT
00:00 Data management; computer power.
00:10 Each has developed over the years, following dances called by two distinct and separate computer science disciplines.
00:19 Data sources now exceed a quintillion bytes in size, while supercomputers strive to perform a quintillion operations per second.
00:28 This is exascale computing. It may at last bring the two together, as supercomputers process unprecedented data wealth, and data stores teach supercomputers how to think.
00:43 Join us as we talk with ACM Fellow Daniel Reed about Exascale Computing and Big Data.
00:51 [Intro graphics/music]
01:01 Dan Reed is no stranger to explosive growth. He was present at the birth of the first web browser as a Professor at the University of Illinois.
01:12 Now from his position at the University of Iowa, he’s witness to the twin explosions of data management and supercomputer power.
01:21 I went to Microsoft actually to apply supercomputing architecture ideas to the design of burgeoning cloud datacenters. And then part of why I came back to academia was to try to take some lessons from cloud computing and bring them back into supercomputing.
01:35 Although data size and computing power have grown alongside each other, it’s unusual for the two to be examined together.
01:44 The hardware that both communities are using is very similar. … But the software ecosystems are almost completely disjoint.
01:53 Leading-edge supercomputing has traditionally been the province of scientific and academic fields.
01:59 In research circles, often capital is expensive; the people are relatively inexpensive.
02:06 But big data has been more widely used by companies like Google, which spends as much as a billion dollars per data center.
02:13 In the private sector, the opposite is true. People are very expensive, capital is cheap. And so in each case, they make a different optimization based on the economics that drive their behavior.
02:26 Now in a paper co-written with Jack Dongarra, Dr. Reed says there are reasons to bring the two together. For one thing, science applications need to handle more data than ever before.
02:37 One of the great things that’s happened in science has been the explosive growth of experimental data. … We’ve gone from a world where data was pretty rare to one where it’s extraordinarily plentiful. And so how you build higher-level tools to understand that data is one of those places where insights from the cloud computing world are really relevant.
02:57 On the commercial side, the demands of such applications as voice recognition and video processing require ever more supercomputing power.
03:06 Likewise, people who are in business analytics or the commercial sector are increasingly building very sophisticated computational models, and they need insights and ideas from the supercomputing community. But the people don’t talk to each other much because of this software divergence.
03:23 But as the scientific and business communities push the exascale boundary, there’s a need to grow together. And the real winners may be you and me.
03:33 Success for exascale computing will not just be building an exascale machine. It will be inexpensive desk-side petascale machines. In the same way the success of petascale computing has been in desk-side terascale machines.
03:49 But to make that happen, exascale data and exascale computing must first learn to dance… together.
03:57 Find out more in this month’s Communications of the ACM, in the contributed article, “Exascale Computing and Big Data.”
