Civic Action Assessment of Issue
I have gone to some of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in our community. Hearing so many other POC detailing the hardships of living in our community and how alive racism is here is heartbreaking.

Legislative and Executive Action
H.Res. 1225: Celebrating the National Urban League on its 110 year of service to the United States. It was introduced November 17th 2020.
It originated in the House.
The bill would celebrate The National Urban League. Founded in 1910, it is a nonpartisan, historic social service and civil rights organization based in New York City dedicated to economic empowerment, equality, and social justice for African Americans and other historically underserved groups.
The Bill was supported by the democrats. The bill was assigned to House Education and Labor.
I would encourage my representatives to vote yes. The National Urban league is an amazing organization that needs to be recognized.
The Department of Justice manages the Federal response to Racial Justice.
Their mission statement is:
To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.
This relates to Racial Justice because right now people of color are not treated fairly under the law the Department of Justice needs to do everything that it can to ensure equality for All Americans.
William Barr is the current Secretary of the department. He served as the attorney general under former President George Bush.  He is professionally qualified to work this position. The more qualified they are the better job they are likely to do.
The civil rights division works to uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans, particularly some of the most vulnerable members of our society. The Division enforces federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, disability, religion, familial status and national origin.

California Proposition Assessment
Proposition 16
CA Constitutional Amendment—Affirmative Action in Public Education and Employment
The proposal would get rid of the section of the California Constitution introduced by Prop 209 and would get rid of the ban that allows consideration of race, sex, ethincity, and color.
This proposition would have no direct fiscal effect on state and local authorities because the measure would not require any change to current policies or programs but because the specific choices state and local entities would make if voters approved this measure are unknown, the potential fiscal effects are highly uncertain.
Election Results:
This proposition did not win. This did surprise me a little bit because I thought the proposition was a good idea and I felt that the majority of voters would agree.
U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, California and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, Vermont were among the federal officials who supported this proposition. Governor Gavin Newsom also supported the proposition. New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and East Bay Times were some of the newspapers backing this proposition. I am not surprised by the endorsements. By knowing that reliable government officials and newspapers back a proposition it can help show the integrity of the proposition.
Arguments for:
University of California President Janet Napolitano: "It makes little sense to exclude any consideration of race in admissions when the aim of the University’s holistic process is to fully understand and evaluate each applicant through multiple dimensions.
Varsha Sarveshwar, president of the University of California Student Association: "Today, colleges can consider whether you’re from the suburbs, a city or a rural area. They can consider what high school you went to. They can consider your family’s economic background. They can look at virtually everything about you – but not race. It makes no sense – and is unfair – that schools can’t consider something that is so core to our lived experience.
Arguments against:
Richard D. Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation in Washington, D.C.: "Because it is much cheaper to provide racial preferences to upper middle class Latino and African American students than it is to do the hard work of recruiting economically disadvantaged and working-class Latino and African American students, I fear that many of these progressive reforms could be diluted if 209 is repealed."
Former Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff (R): "California is the most diverse state in the nation and must step up to the challenges that brings. The real solution for racial equality is comprehensive public-school reform in our K-12 system, not government sanctioned discrimination to create more losers than winners as Proposition 16 will do."
I would’ve voted yes on prop 16 because I feel like it is unfair to not include race. My race is a huge part of my identity and for that to be skipped seems wrong.
The campaign had raised $20.39 million. M. Quinn Delaney was the largest donor, contributing $5.5 million.

Political Interest Groups and PACs Assessment
Race Forward:
Founded in 1981, Race Forward brings systemic analysis and an innovative approach to complex race issues to help people take effective action toward racial equity. Their mission is to catalyze movement building for racial justice. In partnership with communities, organizations, and sectors, we build strategies to advance racial justice in our policies, institutions, and culture. They want to create a just, multiracial, democratic society, free from oppression and exploitation, in which people of color thrive with power and purpose.
Civil Rights and Racial Justice Organizations Denounce Discrimination Against Asian Americans and Urge Unity in Responding to Coronavirus Pandemic
As our nation grapples with the coronavirus, we are deeply concerned that recent incidents of racism and discrimination against Asian Americans threaten our collective public safety.
Race Forward Calls For An End To Voter Suppression of Black and Brown Communities
Race Forward stands against Trump’s false declaration and authoritarian threat, which follows an election which saw historic turnout rates among Black communities, Indigenous communities, and other communities of color. These attacks are meant to disenfranchise legally cast votes in states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, all states where voters of color have played a central role in the election.
Attack on the Transgender Community Is an Attack on Racial Justice
According to The New York Times, the Trump administration is seeking to legally define gender as a “biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth.” This regressive proposal would magnify the harm that at least two million transgender people in this country already face on a daily basis—whether being denied access to healthcare, employment, housing, or basic civil rights.
Race Forward: Systemic Racism at Root of Latest Exec. Order on Immigration
The human rights catastrophe occurring on our borders and and in detention centers across the country is not, and never has been, about keeping America safe. This has never been about protecting children. This has never been about upholding the rule of law. This has always been about race.
Race Forward Celebrates Historic Election and Turnout of People of Color, Calls on Biden Administration to Center Racial Justice
Race Forward Calls For A New Agenda For A Just, Multiracial Democratic Society
Race Forward celebrates the victory of President-elect Joseph Biden and the historic election of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to hold that office. Race Forward also calls upon the Biden administration to center racial justice in the development of its policy platform for the first 100 days and beyond.
Race Forward was in support of Biden winning the election. They call on Biden to center racial justice in the development of their party platform and to undo the Trump administration's policies.
Race Forwards roots are in Oakland California. From time to time, Race Forward spearheads and engages in action-oriented campaigns. They also have Building Racial
Equity training.
There are volunteer options. However with the pandemic they are harder to find right now.
Racial Justice
They want to ensure people of color are treated fairly, end racism, and stop police brutality.
Total raised: 233.59K
Total spent: 38.23K
They spent: $21,000 on campaign expenses for democrats. This did not surprise me because typically Democrats get more donations from Racial Justice organizations.
Some of the donors were: Showing up for Racial Justice Action in Louisville Kentucky and then mostly people from the more progressive states. It reflects a group that is more progressive and leans left rather than right.

Election 2020 Presidential Candidates Assessment
Green Party: Howie Hawkins/Angela Nicole Walker:
Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker want to enforce anti-discrimination laws and have federal investigations of local police misconduct. They want equality for everyone and want to get justice for everyone.
I agree with their position on racial justice because I believe that police should be held accountable. I think that there is a need to enforce the anti-discriminatory laws because we are still seeing lots of discrimination from the justice sytem towards people of color. This candidate supports  their parties platform because the Green Party want to end racial profiling in our law enforcement. They also want to end criminalization in Black and Brown communities.
Republican Party: Donald J. Trump/Michael R. Pence:
Dear President Donald Trump,
The issue I am concerned about is Racial Justice. I am concerned about this issue because I am one of the few African American students at my school and I have seen racial injustices first hand. I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class. Please clarify your stance on this issue. Thank you so much for your time and good luck.
Sincerely,
Gabby Schneider
I have not received a response
Gloria La Riva/Sunil Freeman, Peace and Freedom:
Gloria La Riva and Sunil Freeman want to End racism, police brutality and mass incarceration. They also want to pay reparations to the African American community. They believe that we must fully prosecute all acts of police brutality and violence.
I agree with their stance on this issue. Police brutality is a big part of the racial injustices African American communities battle every day. These candidates agree with their parties platform. The Peace and Freedom party agrees that racial injustice exists and that it is a huge issue in America. They want to hold police and accountable and enforce anti discrimination measures.
Roque De La Fuente "Rocky" Guerra/Kanye Omari West, American Independent:
Roque De La Fuente Guerra and Kanye Omari West want to Create universal access to basic primary, specialty, and psychiatric care which is an issue for minority communities. They also want to protect immigration.
I agree that the basic primary healthcare is something that every person should be entitled to. I also agree that immigration needs to be protected. However they did not talk about police brutality which is a major issue in the fight for racial justice.
Jo Jorgensen/Jeremy "Spike" Cohen, Libertarian:
Jo Jorgensen and Jeremy Cohen believe that criminal justice reform is a huge issue in America. “While Black Americans are less than 14% of the population, they represent 40% of federal drug offenders and total federal prison inmates.” They want to federally decriminalize drugs l defund federal involvement in policing. This will keep federal agencies out of local police matters unless called upon by state authorities.
I agree with their stance on Racial Justice. African Americans are incarcerated in high numbers and we need to fix this. Fixing the criminal justice system is one of the big steps we must take to fix the issues with racial justice in this country. They agree with their parties stance. They believe that all Americans should have equal rights. They believe the government should not deney human rights based upon nation origion, ethicity, sexual orientation, sex, and wealth.
Joseph R. Biden/Kamala D. Harris, Democratic:
Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris want to root out systemic racism from our laws, our policies, our institutions, and our hearts. They want to tackle systemic racism and continue fighting for civil rights. They want to advance the economic mobility of African Americans and close the racial wealth and income gaps.
I agree with these candidates' stance on Racial Justice, They acknowledge that it is a huge issue in America and have plans to stop the racial injustices in this country. They also want to close the racial wealth and income gaps which is super important. Their stance agrees with their party. The Democratic party recognizes that our system overpoliced and underserves Black and Latino Communities and that police brutality is a huge issue.

Political Party Action
Republican: The republicans stance is more on ensuring order between law enforcement and the American People rather than racial justice as a whole. However they agree that law officials should be held responsible for their actions and when they break the laws themselves they should have Immediate  dismissal and when appropriate prosecution for department officials who have violated their oath to office. They believe the President should take time to strengthen relationships between citizens and law enforcement rather than creating a divide. I believe that the only way for the American people to begin to trust law enforcement lots of reform must be made.
Democrat: The Democrats recognize there is a big issue with our justice system right now. They understand that, “Our system has criminalized poverty, over policed and underserved Black and Latino communities, and cut public services.” They recognize police brutality and want to fix this issue. The Criminal Justice system needs reform. They recognize the hardships minorities must endure in this country such as, “Black parents must have “the talk” with their children, to try to protect them from the very police officers who are supposed to be sworn to protect and serve them.”  Their plan is to start with the schools and communities. By getting rid of the school-to-prison pipeline and eliminating law enforcement in schools. Democrats beloved's schools need  funding to hire, “ guidance counselors, social workers, nurses, or school psychologists.” “Democrats will establish strict national standards governing the use of force, including banning the use of chokeholds and carotid holds and permitting deadly force only when necessary and a last resort to prevent an imminent threat to life And we will ban racial and religious profiling in law enforcement.” I agree with everything the democrats have to saw about racial justice. it is clear that it is happening and they are admitting to it and have plans in place to end the racial discrimination in the justice system.
Libertarian: Libertarians Believe that the government should never be allowed to violate our rights. they want to repeal laws that create crimes without victims like the medicinal or recreational use of drugs. They believe that everyone has the the rights the due process, a speedy trial, and innocence until proven guilty. They are against intimidating defendants into accepting plea bargains. On the topic of discrimination, Libertarians believe that, “Government should neither deny nor abridge any individual’s human right based upon sex, wealth, ethnicity, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference, or sexual orientation” I agree with their stance on justice. All Americans should have equal rights and it is wrong to violate these rights based on race.
Green: The Green Party is committed to, “Complete reparations to the African American community of this nation for the past four hundred plus years of genocide, slavery, land-loss, destruction of original identity and the stark disparities which haunt the present evidenced in unemployment statistics, substandard and inadequate education.” They understand that big steps must be taken to end the abuse that minorities are dealing with. This includes ending criminalization in Black and Brown communities. they realize that we need to eradicate poverty and invest in health care in order to fix these issues. They want to ban all Confederate flags and signs of white supremacy. For Law enforcement they want to end the racial profiling and stop harassing a violence against minorities with, “ No other justification than race or ethnic background.” They support measures to end racism and police brutality against people of color. The Green Party is mostly for fixing the mistakes the country made in the past. I agree with their stance on fixing relationships between the justice system and the minorities of this country. I agree that actions must be taken to end racial profiling in the police force.
Peace and Freedom: The Peace and Freedom party recognizes the rise in racial discrimination. They recognize that, “Minority families are disproportionately victimized by cutbacks in health care, education, child care, welfare, food stamps and jobs.” This party demands that racial discrimination is ended and that we must enforce anti discrimination measures in hiring and promotion. They believe that police and prison officials must be held accountable and adequately punished when they brutalize and murder minorities. They understand that the actions by law enforcement cannot go unprosecuted. They believe that we must take action to ensure that all people are equal in the eyes of the government and American people. I agree with the Peached and Freedom party as well. Police must be held accountable and we need to take action and create plans to ensure that the rights of all citizens are not violated.
Which party position do you identify with the most? Is that surprising?
I identify most with the Democratic parties position. This is not surprising to me because I have researched their views on Racial justice before.
Would you vote for their presidential candidate?
I would vote for their presidential candidate.
Presidential debate assessment: Was your civic action issue a topic during the debate? If so, summarize the position taken by each candidate during the debate; the effectiveness of their argument; whether you agree or disagree
Racial Justice was brought up during the debate.
Joe Biden: Recognizes the discrimination against black Americans and the loss of justice in the case of Breonna Taylor. Biden recognized that police reform is needed but is not for defunding the police. He also recognized the protests and supports all peaceful protesting. He does not agree with any of the violence seen. Biden’s points supported the dead of the Democrats on the issues of racial justice.
I agree with Biden on many things. I do not like the violence at protests but majority of the protests are extremely peaceful. I think that we need a lot of police reform and better training for the police for situations with minorities and mental health crisis.
Donald Trump: Claims all the protests are violent .ended racial sensitivity training says it is racist.says racial sensitivity training are sick and bad ideas and are radical. He refused to condemn white supremacy and instead attacked the left. His claims were contradicted the points the republicans made. Instead of trying to strengthen bonds between law enforcement and American citizens Trump further divided them by refusing to acknowledge police brutality and the failures of the justice system.
I do not agree with any of Donals Trumps points. He failed to acknowledge the police brutality as well as refusing to condemn white supremacy groups. It terrified me to hear that he ended racial sensitivity trainings because I believe that those training are extremely important.

Media Assessment of Issue
 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/13/us/george-floyd-racism-america.html
Subject: African Americans have been oppressed by systematic racism and finally people are starting to make the changes necessary to make this country a place where we can all truly be free.
Author: Amy Harmon is a national correspondent for The New York Times, covering the intersection of science and society. Apoorva Mandavilli is a reporter for The Times, focusing on science and global health. She is the 2019 winner of the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting.Sapna Maheshwari is a business reporter covering retail for The New York Times. Jodi Kantor is a prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author whose work has revealed hidden truths about power, gender, technology, politics and culture.
Context: Published June 13, 2020 by the New York Times. The New York Times is considered one of the most trustworthy news sources so an article from them is trusted.
Audience: The four women who wrote the article together all have different specialties from science and global health to culture. Therefore, people who want a trustworthy new source can clearly read and identify the issues with racial justice in America.
Perspective: The source has a fair point of view. The article mainly reports on what has changed so far with businesses and communities in regard to racial justice. I agree that many great things have been done so far but we have only just began. There is still a lot of work that needs to get done to ensure that all of us a treated fairly.
Significance: In a video released June 5 apologizing for the N.F.L.’s previous failure to support players who protested police violence. ABC Entertainment named the franchise’s first black man to star in “The Bachelor” in the show’s 18-year history, acceding to longstanding demands from fans.
https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/we-are-living-in-the-age-of-the-black-panic-defense
Subject: When facts of violence are committed against black people the excuse is that it was self defense.
Author: Jelani Cobb is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of “The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress.” He teaches in the journalism program at Columbia University.
Context: May 9, 2020 by The New Yorker. The New Yorker is not as trustworthy as other sources which leads me to be skeptical will the facts presented in the article.
Audience: The New Yorker published the source for BLM, those who are angry and the lynchings and recent shootings of unarmed black men and those who wish to learn the truth.
Perspective: The post presents the idea that we live in a society when violent acts are committed on black people and the people who hurt or killed them are not punished due to the fact that they claim self defense while armed next to unarmed black men.
Significance: “Martin was killed by a civilian—a self-appointed neighborhood watchman—who had no legal authority but presumed that the seventeen-year-old Martin was a burglar, confronted him, and killed him in a gated community in Florida.” “The two men grabbed their firearms (a .357 Magnum revolver and a shotgun) and pursued Arbery.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2020/08/28/1963-march-on-washington-police-brutality-voting-rights/
Subject: the prostates of today can closely relate to those of 19
Author: Sydney Trent has been a journalist at The Washington Post since 1999. Most recently, she was Senior Editor/Social Issues, supervising award-winning coverage of religion, gender, poverty and other topics.
Context: August 28, 2020 by the Washington Post which is reliable but a little bit left leaning which might make conservatives wary of this source.
Audience: people who believe in reform and racial justice as well as people who would like to earn more about the protests of MLK’s time. Again, conservatives would be wary of articles specifically targeting the left side.
Perspective: I agree that these protests are parallel.  while reforms were made before the injustice to African Americans is happening all the time. we need to fix this issue permanently before tensions grow even more and no jut=stice can be reached.
Significance: The full name of that historic gathering on Aug. 28 was called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This time, it’s the Get Your Knee Off Our Necks March on Washington.
3. Each article is clear the there are issues with racism in America. Not all the sources go into detail just how bad the racism and lack of justice truly is.
4. I am a big fan of MLK and I have gone to many BLM protests myself so I identify the most with the Washington Post Article comparing MLK’s march to a recent one.

CONCEPTUALIZING THE ISSUE AND ASSESSING TYPES OF ACTION
1. What civic action issue did you choose and why?
I chose racial justice because of what has been happening in the world recently with police brutality and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Also, being African American this topic is especially important to me.
2. Describe the issue in your own words and how it relates to government.
Racial Justice relates to the government becuase without justice there can be no peace. In our government the minorities are American citizens and the 14th Amendment gives all people of color equal rights under our government.
3. What type of action do you think needs to be taken to address this issue?
Everyone needs to be properly taught all of American history not just the white side. race is a social construct and needs to be dissolved so that we can all see each other as humans and to stop defining people by the color of their skin.
