truly the most egregious part of the 2012 Les Mis is that they changed Valjean’s line from
“It’s the story of those who always loved you, your mother gave her life for you then gave you to my keeping.”
to
“it’s the story, of one who turned from hating. The man who only learned to love when you were in his keeping.”
LIKE?????!! How dare they remove Valjean specifically mentioning Fantine’s sacrifice and putting that before he mentions his own part in the story?? How dare they make Valjean imply that it was only when Cosette came into his keeping that he stopped hating everything and learned to love WHEN THE FUCKING BISHOP IS THE REASON FOR THE GODDAMN SEASON????
Like OF COURSE Cosette softened Valjean, of course he became a better man when he became her father, of course their relationship is important.
But this story would not have happened without the love of the bishop and it was his love that rekindled the love that was dormant in Valjean’s heart. And it was Fantine that fanned that flame, then Cosette’s that kept it steady.
I just hate how flat it makes Valjean’s story seem. “It’s the story, of those who always loved you.” Is THE answer Cosette has been searching for her whole life. I wish they’d kept it in instead of feeling like the audience would only feel fulfilled by Valjean’s story if he only mentioned his direct relationship to Cosette.
Whatever idk. It’s a good Les Mis for a lot of reasons, but a bad one for a lot of reasons too 🥲

will never shut up abt how crazy the ending of les mis (musical) is. it ends on a call to action!!!!!! its detrimental to the message of the musical!!!! think about how profound it is - you sit and watch so many innocent, hopeful, undeserving people die for two and a half hours, and then at the end they come back and tell you to keep fighting. you would think the message, after watching everyone die, would be some lame shit like “violence is never the answer” or something, but its not!!! it says “you have just watched innocent people die fighting for justice and freedom. the fight is hard and you may not see the fruits of it in your lifetime. but that is irrelevant - knowing the hardships that come with it, knowing the fight is never over, will you continue the fight? when the revolution comes knocking, what will you do?” and you can say that its uninspiring because of just how much tragedy is in it, you can argue that they ‘died for nothing,’ but at the end of the day, you’re watching this musical with the comforting knowledge that things have changed since then, and thats hope!!! the hope is knowing that as long as there are people opposed to the injustice in the world, things will continually get better even if you dont live to see it. and, furthermore, that the modest life you live now isnt any less meaningful just because you dont get to see the of your effort - as long as you were kind and loving, your life has meaning. its!!! so !!! crazy!!!! im not saying its not a flawed musical, but its one of the few pieces of media about revolution/rebellion that emphasizes its struggles without dismissing it as unnecessary. it would be so easy to have written about the february revolution (which hugo lived through and could have written about) and had a happier story about a succesful revolution - or even a story about the first french revolution - but hugo sepcifically chose not to do that. he chose the 1832 rebellion because, among other reasons, he wanted to emphasize that the fight for freedom is not always linear. and the musical reminds you of this, and encourages you to fight anyway.

okay this reminded me of the strongest human being (I use that label with some reservation) I have ever met and I still think about him like once a week because about 4 years ago on Thanksgiving night my sister, cousin, and I were going to pick up a friend about a 40 minute drive from home, and I got lost and tried to turn around on a little gravel pull-off on the side of the road, but my front tires got stuck in the snow.
we were in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception, and the only sign of life was a single, completely dark house across the road from us.
We all did our best to push the car out, and we’re strong people, but we couldn’t make it budge. Cold and stuck, we climbed back and wondered what to do. A car full of men pulled over beside us and asked if we needed help, but getting out of our locked car on a backroad at night with strange men felt like a bad idea, so we said a tow was coming and waved them along. We did that twice before finally deciding our only option was to accept the next offer for help and just risk it,
when a man came out of the house across the street.
He’d clearly been watching us and figured out why we’d been lying to people, which really surprised me & he said “it’s okay, you can stay in your car and keep the doors locked. Just start backing up when I say so.”
I had the window cracked and told him “it’s too stuck. There’s no way we’re getting out. Could you call a tow?”
And he said “just back up when I say so.”
So he walked around the front of the car, squatted, and said “okay back up,”
and I did, and
he lifted
the front of the car Into The Air. Off its front wheels, and we backed up while he essentially wheel-barrowed us back onto the road.
And we were honest to god yelling. We couldn’t help it. We just yelled until all four wheels were back on the ground and he was waving us off while we thanked him.
And then I looked at my sister and cousin & said “he REALLY told us we can KEEP our doors locked as if THAT WOULD’VE FUCKING STOPPED HIM!!!! As if he couldn’t have just RIPPED EM OFF THE HINGES.”
I later looked up the weight of my car, and it’s 3200 pounds without anything or anyone in it.
This haunts me.

admittedly there is something about how george blagden Just for fun convinced a generation that grantaire les mis was actually a cute tortured artist softboi. it was insane. it was so 2013. it ruined the grantaire tag for like a decade. but yeah for an actor in a multimillion dollar movie also just a hilarious thing to do objectively speaking

no actor has ever, ever appeased gay fans of anything like george blagden did. “oh but sam reid said some mad shit about the vampire show”, shut up, i don’t care, he’s not fit to clean blagden’s boots. when his character’s solo verse in his one big song got cut from the movie george blagden fucking went to paris stood in front of the building it was set alone at night and recorded himself singing it. he posted himself singing a death cab for cutie song that he’d adapted to be about his gay little character and the guy he was pining for. this man was the only person outside of tumblr to give a fuck about “grantaire from the les mis movie” and he fought and died for tumblrina rights. we will never see his like again
