doctor john is like her second father.
marie’s biological father was always kind to her  —  he taught her to read and to write, and never treated her differently even if the shades of their skin didn’t match.  a golden brown versus alabaster.  but he couldn’t teach her everything.  some parts of herself she even had to hide from him  (  her magic  —  her gifts  —  that her mother told her he wouldn’t understand, that most wouldn’t understand  ).
she meets doctor john when she is already a woman, a married woman and a hairdresser in the french quarter.  she’s drawn to the bayou one night  —  to the light of the fire and the sounds of the drums and to something else that she couldn’t quite interpret right then  (  but now she knows it was magic  —  that rush of warmth through her veins and air in her lungs was unmistakably magic  ).
and when doctor john sees her, he seems to already know who she is, and he smiles.  marie remembers his blinding smile and the firm grip of his hand and his touch on her shoulder to steady her when the current of his magic dizzies her.
(  she had always gotten visions  —  flashes of images right before her eyes in her dreams and when she took someone’s hand or brushed their shoulder against hers.  when she touches doctor john, the voodoo king, she sees that he will be someone precious to her  ).
he takes her by her hand and tells her that he can teach her all that she needs to know.  he tells her that he’s seen that she will be someone important  —  powerful, respected, and feared.  and she accepts, because she thinks about the magic she’s had to keep hidden all this time and a culture she doesn’t know and visions and magic that she’s never quite understood.
marie smiles, almost as grand as his own, and lets him tell her everything.
he tells her about voodoo  —  that it’s not what people will say it is.  it ain’t dark magic, he says, and she believes him.  but still, he shows her, proves it to her.  he shows her how he collects ingredients and makes a gris-gris bag  —  for luck and love and health and protection  (  you can make them for anything, even to do harm, but i’mma healer  ).  he shows her how to cultivate her gift;  he tells her how to bring on her visions, how to see what she needs to see  (  your konesans’ important, marie.  the strongest seers are the leaders  ).  he shows her how to summon the loa, how to talk to them and petition them and praise them as they deserve  (  some are pretty temperamental.  you gotta know how to please them  ).  and he teaches her how to heal with her own hands  —  from small wounds to deadly illness ravaging new orleans.
doctor john also teaches her how to be a leader  —  how to be the queen.  so when he tells her after years of watching over her that he’s taught her all she needs to know, and it sounds awfully close to a goodbye, she’s not at all surprised.  she’s saddened, but she knew it was coming.
he leaves her with a gift  —  a gris-gris bag he made specifically for her, to keep her safe once he left.  marie sets it on her nightstand and prays to it before she sleeps.

✧  MAGIC  SENTENCE  STARTERS.
relating to, but not limited to, witchcraft & witchery. may or may not contain triggers, categorized by good/bad/neutral as requested.  please proceed to read/reblog with caution.
GOOD  MAGIC
❛ not all spells are bad, you must stray away from the bad magic. ❜  ❛ there’s nothing wrong with a bit of magic, as long as it’s for the good. ❜  ❛ you’re like a vase and the magic is the water.  ❜  ❛ i don’t need magic to see that. ❜  ❛ not every spell is considered to be bad. ❜  ❛ this spell book here contains no such bad magic nor will it ever. ❜  ❛ i’m working up a new potion. it’s for the greater good, of course. ❜  ❛ i’ve never used my powers/magic for anything but good things. ❜  ❛ there is no competition with magic, you either possess, or you don’t. ❜  ❛ no one power/magic is better nor greater than the other. ❜  ❛ remember, everything you learn is to be used for good. ❜ ❛ you think every witch/sorcerer is bad? do i look evil to you?  ❜  ❛ i’ve only ever used my magic/powers for good. ❜  ❛ it’s not the magic/powers that are bad, it’s the person who possesses it. ❜    ❛ there is good and bad in everything, you must always chose to be good. ❜  ❛ my powers/magic are not a weapon! i will not be treated as such! ❜  ❛ i cannot help you with your wishes, it’s far too evil. ❜  ❛ magic is a delicate thing and i treat it as such. ❜  ❛ i don’t always use magic/my powers, i don’t always need to. ❜  ❛ it is a blessing not a curse, it’s only a curse if you wish to do evil. ❜  ❛ i did come here to show off my powers/magic, what do you take me for? ❜  ❛ i’m not a witch! i’m a person possessing magic. big difference. ❜  ❛ these are healing potions, they will heal just about any form of life. ❜  ❛ the good always outweighs the bad, just remember that. ❜  ❛ it’s best to use magic/powers when you understand them.  ❜
BAD  MAGIC
❛ i’ve never used magic for anything other than evil. ❜ ❛ i will be the greatest and the most powerful, mark my words. ❜ ❛ i’ve hexed so many people, i’ve lost count. ❜ ❛ a curse is never easy to lift, hence the sole purpose of it. ❜ ❛ what’s the point in having powers/magic, if you don’t take advantage? ❜ ❛ you have always abused your magical privileges.  ❜ ❛ i wouldn’t use my powers/magic for the good if it was life and death. ❜ ❛ you really only know how to cast curses/hexes? ❜ ❛ i specialize in curses and hexes only, anything else is just noise. ❜ ❛ shhh, you shouldn’t even speak of such dark magic. ❜ ❛ this book is full of the darkest magic you’ll ever read. ❜ ❛ what is the difference between light and dark magic? ❜ ❛ dark magic is wonderful, you learn the most from it. ❜ ❛ there are so many hexes/curses to cast, i never know which one to pick. ❜   ❛ have you ever had a curse/hex casted upon you? ❜ ❛ there is no such thing as good magic. ❜ ❛ why are you so wicked with such a beautiful gift? ❜ ❛ you do not deserve to possess magic/powers. ❜ ❛ i’ve got a wicked idea in mind, want to hear? it involves magic. ❜ ❛ the best magic of all, of course, is dark magic. ❜ ❛ have you ever wanted to step into dark magic? ❜ ❛ this a book of dark magic, but it is not easy to open. ❜ ❛ you have to do a sacrifice to get this dark magic book open. ❜ ❛ have you ever participated in dark magic? it’s very liberating. ❜ ❛ all of these spells contain blood and sacrifice… ❜
NEUTRAL  MAGIC
❛ what witch/sorcerer doesn’t own a spell book? ❜ ❛ for future reference, never interrupt my ritual again. ❜ ❛ gemstones are great collectibles for healing. ❜ ❛ every movie about witchcraft is kind of off point, i feel. ❜ ❛ i’m unable to use magic/my powers until i’m older. ❜ ❛ do you fly on broom stick and all that? ❜ ❛ it’s actually rather hard to stir up a potion. ❜ ❛ i don’t own a wand nor a broom stick, but i will drop a house on you. ❜ ❛ spell books are often hard to find. ❜ ❛ i could close my eyes, pretend to concentrate and you would be scared. ❜ ❛ you know they used to hang witches back in the olden days. ❜ ❛ this isn’t a spell, this is common sense. ❜ ❛ this isn’t magic, it’s just glitter. ❜ ❛ i’ve always wanted to live in a cabin in the woods though. ❜   ❛ the best time to do a ritual is of an evening. ❜ ❛ would like to do a healing ritual with me? it’s harmless. ❜ ❛ let’s go candle shopping, come on! i love candles! ❜ ❛ i’m still human, you know, with feelings! ❜ ❛ you know, there is something else i possess; feelings! ❜ ❛ look, it’s really not like any of that. ❜ ❛ what’s so special about it? nothing, of course. it’s not special. ❜ ❛ i don’t feel any greater or better because of it. ❜ ❛ there are spells/potions that can be used for both, good and evil. ❜ ❛ i would rather not use magic/my powers, i’d rather pretend i don’t have any. ❜ ❛ i would never flaunt it as if it’s something so great to have! ❜

so marie was married twice, both in the 1800s.  she did not change her name either time.
her first marriage was at the age of 18 to jacques, and they were married for five years.  while the marriage actually didn’t end on the greatest of notes, she does remember it favorably for being her first love. the records say that he just suddenly went missing, and there is a lot of speculation surrounding it  —  that he deserted her, others that he died  (  and even farther, that she killed him  ).  the truth is something only her closest friends  —  estelle and julien  —  actually know.  and yes, she did kill him  (  for reasons i still haven’t created just yet lmao, but it has something to do with her magic  ).  at this time, she wasn’t really well known as a witch, however, so most people thought she was just a poor, young girl abandoned by her husband and few really entertained the idea that she could have anything to do with his death.
it was after his death, coincidentally, that she started her rise to power, becoming one of the few voodoo queens to the voodoo queen.
around the mid 1820s, is when she had her second lover, christophe.  she was with him for 30 years until he died.  she utilized her magic to extend his life as well as she could, but eventually he’d succumb to disease.
so she never married since then, though she definitely has had lovers.  after her marriages, and towards the beginnings of the 1900s, she would actually start to explore her sexuality more and realizing she had an attraction to women as well.

for some reason i was thinking about belly button piercings today and while it was just a maybe for my other muse ... it’s about to be a thing for marie because ... yes.
also, i’ve mentioned this before, but marie’s fashion is amazing.  she has an image to uphold and she’s rich as hell, so you bet she dresses good.  you aren’t catching her without her accessories  —  big, golden hoops, at least two bracelets, a ring.

power series — water manipulation [ˈwôtər məˌnipyəˈlāSHən]
the ability to control, generate and/or absorb water and moisture. users may move and shape bodies of water to their desire based on their skill level, which varies depending on their natural born mutation and time the user takes to develop it. although water manipulation is often considered one of the safest powers to possess, if not trained properly, those blessed with it may cause massive destruction to that which surrounds them. if trained properly and excessively, water manipulators may bend liquids to serve as a weapon, and may even begin to breach the surface of other powers, such as ice, weather and blood manipulation. although users are often as dormant as a pond in one’s backyard, if antagonized, consequences may prove to be deadly.

marie specializes in more supplemental // defensive // protective types of magics, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t know any offensive spells.
if she has to actually fight, her preferred forms of fighting is utilizing her telekinetic abilities or elemental manipulation.  due to her met tet being damballah, she actually has an affinity for water. though she can manipulate all four of the basic elements.
