Wolf Guy Re-read: Ch 5

Chiba keeps his cool and swings with mercy. Haguro makes his grand entrance and flexes on em all.

Second time now that Chiba’s diffusing the tension and this time with his own guys. He’s already got a lie by omission concocted to tell Haguro--an interesting bit of character for him. It’d be really easy in this case for Chiba to come across negatively as a coward, and he is to a certain extent, but I don’t hate him for it because he comes off as a stoic, badass dude. And with how tense he seems in this chapter I get the sense that in the past Chiba has had to bend the truth to prevent Haguro’s involvement because....well because Haguro is who he is.

God in any other series about regular humans Chiba would be a fucking badass but he’s always going to get overshadowed by Haguro and Inugami.

Yea this is fucking sick. A proper entrance. I love the speed lines and the distorted perspective.

HAGURO’S FACE. He’s visually stunning I don’t care what anyone says. I’m gonna just break down the standout features and why I love them. 

His eyes are incredible. In some panels it looks like the sclera are black, but his eyes are hooded and small enough that they easily come off as an animal’s eyes, only the iris is visible. And I mean c’mon....that’s a lion’s eyes. He’s clearly meant to be a lion. His lips are black too. That’s not just creative shading, they’re always black as if he’s wearing lipstick. And I love his nose and hair too even though his hair is a nightmare. Everything about him screams monster, beast. I don’t care that it’s not subtle I nut every time when I compare Haguro and Inugami. Every little character detail poured into Haguro is fantastic, from his crazy feathery hair akin to a bearded vulture; to his tacky choice in clothes, literally screaming “I’m a beast” with his animal print and fur coat, looking like every yakuza punk stereotype.

Wolf Guy Re-read: Ch 4

Inugami reads Kuro’s fortune. Kuro ignores it and gravity does the rest. The audience learns about a pattern. And Ryuuko gets some plot relevant dick.

Chiba knows

Ryuuko you chaotic bitch I love you. Also love that little push on the fourth wall with her looking into the camera just as a relevant fact about her gets dropped offhand. Her allegiance really just depends on who she thinks is the strongest and I fuck with that energy.

 Fucking hilarious that no one wasted any time whipping their phones out. And we get a nice bit of character for Inugami. Either he has compassion/pity for Kuro or he’s covering his tracks. I’d like to think it’s a little of A and B. Inugami might be a dick but as much as he likes to push it down he still has heart. It’s nice that we get that right at the beginning. 

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Our first look at Haguro and his face is encased in heavy shadow. After all the name drops and the build up we get teased even more. I remember when I first read this chapter and I was instantly in love. He hasn’t even done anything badass yet, just talked on the phone but it’s the fact that he’s doing it while fucking Ryuuko that gets me. Dude ain’t even breaking a sweat unlike Ryuuko. 

Haguro’s curvy as fuck and my thirsty ass can’t handle that.

Wolf Guy Re-read: Ch 3

Inugami exudes big dick energy and thumbs his nose at the class hierarchy. Attracted like a shark to blood, Ryuuko plays the get to know you game. Chiba abides, while a weasel swims in deep waters.

Inugami expects this kind of treatment? He’s obviously being sarcastic and acting his usual "can’t be bothered” self but we find out there’s an undercurrent of truth there. Dude just can’t catch a break and that’s kind of tragic.

Damn when the whole class gets a reaction shot you know shit’s a big deal.

I love Chiba too goddammit. He’s..so good. With a few words he ends the whole issue. As if to say “Haguro doesn’t care about some stupid spot especially when he doesn’t care enough to come to class, let’s chill out.” The level-headed right man. And a beautiful close up of his calloused knuckles just to give us a taste of his story and to drive home that this dude has seen some action.

Love this bit of banter between Ryuuko and Inugami. I could be reading this wrong because of the translation but I see Inugami playing the false modesty card, going for a low blow to his ego and banking on Ryuuko buying that people would bully him with a playground insult about his name (Inu). But Ryuuko corrects him with a smile. “No, no I’m Ryuuko cuz of my name (Ryu), you’re “Wolf” for a whole different reason.” 

Ryuuko the girl who can sense there’s something special about Inugami, and who is genuinely attracted to things that “stir the pot”. Nice bit of foreshadowing about the “sensing” that Ryuuko develops later on that culminated in nothing and was just some weird thing I wish they had expanded on.

I just wanna draw attention to the panels with Ryuuko and Chiba’s reactions. How it says so much about their character that I love. One pretty surface level, the other a little more guarded.

As soon as Inugami made the comment that set buck tooth-bowl cut off, Ryuuko distanced herself with a “you really did it now” pity smile on her face. It didn’t matter that she had made friendly with Inugami before, she’s not about to stick her neck out for him. She knows buck tooth’s true character, but she doesn’t stop Inugami. And we see her here enraptured by the scene about to play out. Her eyes are wide and she’s got a slight smile, she’s living for the anticipation of a fight and what might happen. I love this bitch so much.  

And Chiba has just been disrespected by buck tooth who really picked a desk as the hill to die on. Chiba looks fucking annoyed, but he doesn’t say or do anything. Probably because they’re all in school and anyone stupid enough to pull a knife is gonna be distanced from the group. But just like Ryuuko, Chiba knows buck tooth. We get multiple reaction panels confirming that Chiba was listening to the conversation. Why not step in before things escalated? Well we learn pretty soon that Chiba holds back. He holds back the truth and he holds back his punches. 

And now I’ve made myself sad...

Wolf Guy Re-read: Ch 2

Ms. Aoshika performs a strip search. Ryuuko swings and misses. And Inugami receives a warm welcome to his homeroom class.

Yo that face lmao I die. Also Aoshika tripped in the first chapter and she never regains her footing. This bitch is gonna continue to flail and grasp and try to balance herself but it’s never gonna happen :’) On one hand it’s funny on the other...not so much. She’s got some great expressions though.

I fucking love this bitch. Also they’re middle school students? I’ll take high school sure but it’s a stretch already and Haguro hasn’t even been introduced. Out of all the crazy shit that happens in this manga the fact that they’re all middle school students is the most outlandish.

I do like the idea that besides a shitty arrogant attitude Inugami doesn’t do anything to draw negative attention to himself. It’s just that people can sense there’s something about him that’s different and it triggers different responses depending on the type of person. So in the case of any delinquent, it’s open hostility and aggression. I wish the manga had held back on explicitly saying this by repeating that Inugami exudes a “virile bestial vitality”. Like....the audience knows he’s a fucking werewolf, and Inugami already acts weird enough that other characters get strange vibes off him. Just let it be the neat little play on how humans can subconsciously sense “predators”. No need to spell it out.

Wolf Guy Re-read: Ch 1

A down on her luck Ms. Aoshika meets a cocky kid. The audience and some unlucky delinquents find out why the manga is called Wolf Guy at the same time. And Inugami attends his first day at a new school.

Never really related to Aoshika very much but if I think of her as a millennial suddenly I can put myself in her shoes. Broke, in a dead end job, wants to marry rich to escape poverty. If seeing her drunk and a bit belligerent didn’t already endear me to her, her circumstances definitely have.

Same girl, same.

Ignoring the translation here, I know it’s bad. Inugami’s lucky he’s pretty cute because I can’t fucking stand how belittling he can be sometimes. I know he’s supposed to be mature beyond his years and he’s been through a lot...being a werewolf will do that to a kid, but c’mon. 

But hey, he’s a delinquent, they don’t respect authority. Why should I expect otherwise from the titular lone wolf?

Oh my~ 

No, but I gotta appreciate the art in this manga. It’s so stylized and striking. Inugami’s werewolf design is one of the best I’ve seen in the werewolf genre; he just looks so cool and menacing. And the terror on those delinquents’ faces is captured so well. I don’t even mind that art is recycled because the way Yuuki Yugo plays with expressions and action feels visceral.

I have no idea if Haguro’s hair is naturally that blond-ish color or not. But I like the image of the delinquent with dyed hair. 

He’s so rich he could go to any high end salon or barber but it’s annoying when the one fucking with your hair is too intimidated to be effective. If someone’s nervous they’re more likely to make mistakes, right? 

So he usually does it himself. That is until Ryuuko decides it’d be fun to try. Now it’s just become another thing between them.
