Michael Grant Queerbaiting

First of all I love MG books, I really do. I love the diversity he puts into them and the way he tries to reoresent minorities in a good light, but He also still does seem to Queerbait.

Dekka Briannana - never happen at all. I get that though, Briananna just wasn’t old enough to really be doing anything other than working out what her sexuality was, she was maybe even a little affraid of being something other than straight.

Rodilio Roger and Edilio are definitly a couple on the one hand MG gave us the Rodilio pairing and then what did we get? A hug that didn’t happen and only verbal confermation of them being a couple by Edilio and nothing. we don’t really get anymore on them as a couple.

Admittedly I’m only vaguley aware of what queer baiting is and I had to find and copy this on wikipedia, to be certian of exactly what it is:

Queerbaiting is the practice (mainly in film or television writing) to hint at, but then to not actually depict, a potential same-sex romantic relationship between fictional characters. The potential romance may be ignored, explicitly rejected or made fun of.

Yes we got Rodilio, but as it says in the above description, queerbaiting is ignoring aromance as well as one not even happening at all. He gave us Edilio and Roger and nothing eles. Even Astrid and Sam got a FAZY poor date to the beach. Diana and Caine got alone time at the island. Hell even Edilio and Lana went to the thanksgiving feast and held hands. Edilio and Roger didn’t even wallk around Lake Tramonto together or anything.

He made time to put in other character relationships, but I think even MG still has a bit to go in terms of making LGBTQ couples and giving them the same importance and story background as straight ones.
