Ava Gardner at court for her divorce from Mickey Rooney (1943)

Mickey and Ava's short marriage was a very tumultuous one. The pair were married when Mickey was 21 and Ava was 19, then divorced just one year later. From the start, things had been very rocky. After spending time in the hospital after an appendectomy just after their honeymoon, Ava returned to find evidence that another woman had been in her bed. The couple fought continuously throughout their year long marriage. According to Ava, their conflict came to a head one night at a nightclub after Mickey had been drinking heavily. He started describing women he had slept with in great detail in front of Ava, which resulted in her leaving and kicking her husband out of their apartment. She said, "I knew that dumping Mickey was a risk. Careerwise, it could have been the end of me. If I stopped being Mrs. Rooney, they wouldn't think twice about letting me go. But I really had no choice. Mickey was never going to change his ways." Ava said she cited "incompatibility" for a quick and clean divorce.
