Close to four months since the conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas began on Oct. 7, 2023, participants in the demonstration in Hiroshima's Naka Ward called to "free Palestine." More than 50 people, including members of a citizens' group that stands daily in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome demanding an end to bloodshed and attacks, walked down Hondori street shouting "Stop the massacre" and "Ceasefire now" among other slogans. They then held a rally in front of the A-bomb Dome.

A farmer in his 30s from the Hiroshima Prefecture city of Shobara commented, "No matter how hard a day I have (here in Japan), it would probably seem like paradise to the people of Gaza. We must take action beyond calling for a cease-fire, to bring the occupation to an end." A woman from Algeria, which was under French colonial rule for 132 years from 1830, said she came to the event because she felt that Palestine was suffering the same fate as her country. Participants also voiced anger and questions about the Japanese government's decision to suspend funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Hiroshima City Council's lack of resolutions regarding a cease-fire and other issues.

who won eurovision didn't really matter. yes, i'm sure the EBU are glad to avoid the shitstorm that an israeli win would've been. on a symbolic level, it's nice that israel lost - but fascism is about power, not logic. the zionists can spin this any way they want.

zionists lost = they cry about how the world is against them, but they are "strong" and "will win" anyway.

zionists lost, but got 2nd in televote = they call themselves a "silent majority", despite placing 5th and not winning televote. (+ most pro-palestinian folks boycotting leading to an outsized zionist viewership +you can't vote against entries, so controversial ones always do well).

zionists lost TO A PRO-PALESTINIAN ARTIST LIKE NEMO, but get one place higher than another pro-palestinian artist like bambie thug = a million tweets about how they "won" over bambie. nemo, the actual winner, is deliberately obscured.

there is no way to spin this that zionists won't try to turn into them somehow "winning." propaganda is propaganda. they will never concede on anything. they are always "winning" in their minds.

The semester will end soon, but it now seems more likely that it will form an ellipses instead of an ending. I’m worried for my students. They are smart and they are brave and they are outraged. They are facing batons and tear gas. This escalation did not have to happen. This escalation will not end well. I blame Republican legislators. But I also expected them to behave this way. Tom Cotton is exactly how we thought he was. Elise Stefanik’s outrage is scripted, typecast. They have not been subtle about their views or intentions. First of all, boycott eurovision. However, I AM loving all the various stories of pro-palestinian rebellion that are coming out surrounding eurovision.

Apparently security surrounding the event is through the roof, and the Eurovision team literally frisk searched all the contestants to make sure they didn't smuggle any palestinian scarves or flags in, but despite this:

there was the guy who wore his father's kufiya as a wristband during his performance

there was a performer who painted "CEASEFIRE" and "FREEDOM" on their face using ogham script, and who then did a post on social media talking about it and how EV officials (who had found out the meaning of the facepaint by then) refused to allow them to do it again for a later round.

there was the indigenous Australian who used his body paint to paint a watermelon on his chest and later made a statement drawing attention to it and stating that he stands with the Palestinians

there's the 10,000-strong pro-Palestine protest that happened in Malmö, the city hosting the ESC this year

there's the crowd, who booed Israel during their dress rehearsal and shouted Free Palestine so loudly that the performance itself was nearly drowned out and the broadcaster (clumsily) tried to alter the audio so that the audience couldn't be heard

It's great, I love it. They can try all they like to block every mention of Palestine, but they haven't been succeeding and they'll continue to fail.

Isreal can win for all we care. What we want is to have this year's contest to have the lowest ratings in history. If Eurovision wants to side with a country committing genocide instead of banning them, like they did with Russia, they need to face those consequences.

Israel doing well in Eurovision is a completely predictable result of the boycott. The people who are watching & voting in Eurovision are now at best willfully ignorant and apathetic and at worst actively pro-Israel, meaning there will be a disproportionate amount of people willing to vote for Israel and even people voting for them because of the boycott.

But saying that means that boycotting Eurovision was the wrong call completely misses the point of the boycott. The point is not "Israel should not win Eurovision", it is "Israel should not be allowed to compete in the first place". The point of the boycott is not to give the EBU views or money, so if you've been boycotting... don't give them money or legitimacy by voting for someone tomorrow to prevent Israel from winning. If Israel does win, that does not mean boycotting failed; it only further delegitimizes the competition and confirms we should burn the whole thing down.

The Eurovision song contest is facing intense scrunity and accusations of discrimination after it rebuked Swedish-Palestinian pop star Eric Saade for wearing a Palestinian scarf in the opening act of the semi-finals. Saade, whose father is of Palestinian origin, kicked off the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden on Tuesday evening with a keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian and Arab male headdress, wrapped around his wrist. [...] In response, the organisers of the contest, European Broadcasting Union (EBU) released a statement saying it "regretted" that Saade wore the scarf. "The Eurovision Song Contest is a live TV show. All performers are made aware of the rules of the contest, and we regret that Eric Saade chose to compromise the non-political nature of the event," it said. [...] Eurovision later posted clips of the performances of the other two opening acts on its social media pages, but did not share Saade’s, prompting social media users to share the performance on their personal pages to show support for the artist.

Waving Palestinian flags, wearing traditional Palestinian garments, or if we're being honest, just being Palestinian, is now officially "too political" for Eurovision.

Literally, all Saade did was wear a keffiyeh around his wrist—while being Palestinian—and that was enough to get a statement from the EBU, and have his opening performance scrubbed from Youtube.
