PS to Batters and the Movie

I’ve written quite a bit about working with Elmer Batters on that movie that was never finished (scroll down if you’ve forgotten). I never knew the other girls who appeared with me. Now I can verify one name — Michelle Angelo. I’ve seen several pictures of her on that movie set, which by now I can easily recognize. Elmer Batters would have taken those pictures of her as well.

The only other still photographer on the movie was Jim Sullivan, who had a very different shooting style than Batters. I worked with Sullivan in 1962 when I was blond. All photos taken by Sullivan that I possess were ones that appeared in magazines. I’m going to try to post a few to Pinterest during the next few days.

I have put several more photos on Pinterest. Search for my real name, Shannon Moeser. The new pictures are on the board titled “Gloria Dawn”. I have now divided that board into sections based on the photographers who took the pictures. So far I only have 10 followers.

Why no new posts

The reason I’ve been missing in action for awhile is that I had a root canal that went sideways. It didn’t drain and I ended up fainting, first falling forward and then backwards, bumped my head in front and ended up with both a bump and a gash on the back. It would have been much worse if I hadn’t been holding onto the fridge door but I still ended up with a concussion.

OldiZnew has been making up my my absence by colourizing some new photos of me. They are posted at oldiznew.com.

Medical Update

I can get around quite well as long as I don’t have to walk for more than two blocks. Walking causes pain, even for short distances, but the pain goes away once I lie down, as long as I haven’t walked a long distance. Don’t need a cane. It’s pressure on my leg that causes the pain. This is made worse if I’m carrying something.

The specialist says it’s severe osteoarthritis. He doesn’t want to give me a knee replacement because (1) I can still walk pretty well, and (2) recovery at my age is long and painful. And honestly, in the waiting room, I saw many who were in much worse shape than I am.

According to many sources on the internet, just about everyone has osteoarthritis by the time they are 60. I actually lasted quite long without developing problems that involved pain. (My right knee has greater structural damage than my left but it is the left that has collapsed in such a way as to produce constant pain when I put weight on it; the right has very little pain, and only when I twist it in a specific way. Plus I only have arthritis in the small finger of my right hand and it seldom is painful. Many at my age have severe and very painful arthritis in their hands.)

In his latest book (Dark Sacred Night), Michael Connelly’s main character, Harry Bosch, has developed osteoarthritis in his knee which is giving him a lot of pain. And Bosch is ten years younger than I am. (If you are not a crime book reader, you wouldn’t get the significance of this but google “Harry Bosch”. That fictional character has a long Wikipedia entry describing his life and adventures. I read it to find out how old Harry is.)

I can’t take yoga classes anymore. I could do the upside down and stretching poses without problems, and a few others, but nearly all classes contain standing postures as well. Plus there is the problem of parking in downtown Victoria and walking several blocks to the studio.

So instead I am taking one-hour water aerobics classes three times a week. Plenty of parking and the pool is only four miles from my home. I have met lots of people with knee replacements or hip replacements in those classes. Some take seven classes a week. I’d like to up my attendance to four classes a week but I’m not ready for that yet. (It wouldn’t cost any more.). I’m glad I live in Saanich, a municipality adjacent to the city of Victoria. It offers plenty of good exercise facilities for people of all ages and abilities. No wonder it has one of the largest senior populations in Canada.

Moving 2

I am slowly moving my photos from gloriadawn.tumblr to www.gloriadawn.wordpress.com.  The Wordpress site is a better match for me as I can post all my photos in sets, as I originally wanted to do when I joined Tumblr.

The process of moving is taking a long time.  Most of my sets are stored as drafts as I move.  So far, I have published three sets.  Those of you who are eagle-eyed might see that there were three new photos on “The Sofa Set by Michael LeRoy.”  These are three new photos that were never posted before.

In Case Anyone Wonders Why I Write So Much

I celebrated Black Friday by buying 18 kindle books for a total of $33.07. Yes some of them are “beach books” but I checked the Goodreads reviews and at least they are “good” beach books. There were some outstanding kindle titles on sale as well. For example, most of those from “The Best American...of 2018” series were on sale. Made me upset that I had previously purchased “The Best American Mystery Stories of 2018” for $9.99 and then it was on sale for $2.99 yesterday. But at least, I picked up the BA Essays, the BA Science and Nature Writing, the BA Science Fiction Fantasy, and the BA Short Stories, each one for only $2.99. The most expensive book was the new Michael Connelly for $4.99.

I got one book for $0.00. I don’t know why. My invoice read $2.99 and then “promotions” -$2.99, for a grand total of $0.00.

All in all, a good haul and very little clutter. (My house is overflowing with books.)

Correction: It was 19 books for $33.07. I was charged $0.00 for the Michael Connelly book too (again “promotions” and -$4.99, for a total of $0.00).

My Hashtags Removed From a Non-adult Tumblr

All my tags have been removed from gloriadawn-pinups. This is a non-adult blog that does not contain any nudity — no more is visible than what appears every day in regular media showing women in bikinis. The pictures remain but they are no longer tagged with my name or the photographer’s name. What is going on with Tumblr?

A Short Break

A very short break before I post the final three Elmer Batters pictures. I’m being rushed trying to create one a day. I will be sending my two favourites to Old iZ New and he may be able to fill in with some colorized posts while I get new pictures ready. Three sets are partially done — the Donna Cole series, some attractive Ron Vogal photos (taken from old 35mm film), and most of another Michael LeRoy set.

But I need to take a break from working on the computer and thought I’d elaborate on the Elmer Batters set currently being posted.

Recently someone asked how clear my memory was of that shooting session and I answered that it was very vague. To tell the truth, I didn’t remember the name “Elmer Batters” as one of the photographers I’d worked with until after joining My Archives in 2006. His name wasn’t something I forgot over a period of 45 years. I forgot it within 10 minutes of meeting him, if I even remembered it that long. I had met Elmer in my agent’s office about three weeks before the black-haired photography shoot. We weren’t formally introduced but I always thought of him as “my agent’s buddy.” The name “Elmer” just didn’t stick … and it should have because it was a memorable name.

Between that initial meeting and my session with him, I worked with Mario Cassilli, Michael LeRoy, and Keith Bernard. When my agent phoned to set up the shoot with Elmer, I’m sure Elmer’s name must have been mentioned, but when Elmer picked me up at the Hollywood Studio Club, I recognized him as my “agent’s buddy” and never, in my mind, called him Elmer. Plus, as I’ve already mentioned several times, Elmer didn’t say much.

So, what do I remember about that session? I remember driving for about an hour in silence. I remember the desert and shooting in and around some dilapidated buildings, but had you asked me to describe them I wouldn’t have had a clue, at least not until I started seeing them in magazines.

But I always had a vivid memory of the disagreement that Elmer and I had in his car at the end of the shoot in the desert. This argument was described in my onmemories story “Nude in Black and Blonde”, which can be found at: https://onmemories.wordpress.com/2013/03/13/nude-in-black-and-blonde/

I always remembered that the house where Elmer shot his final pictures seemed empty. In other words, there was no indication that anyone actually lived there.

And I always remembered, Elmer crooking his finger to indicate “come here” to take me into a room where he shot some photos on the movie set. Those strawberry blonde photos that Batters shot on that occasion were very different from the ones he took in the desert. I can only speculate as to why. Possibly after seeing the photos he took during the black-haired session, he had a better understanding of my potential. Possibly the argument we had in the car did affect him, although it didn’t appear to at the time.

Anyway, back to the current postings. The next three photos were taken at the end of the session in the desert. I know that because of the condition of my hair, not because I remember the order of the shots.

Why I Am Not Posting New Photos

If you are wondering why I have not posted new photos for the past six months, it’s because my knee collapsed on November 19, 2017 (I’ll never forget that date). For six weeks, I was in excruciating pain and couldn’t do anything. Then it slowly started getting better (very slowly). I can walk around now, enough to do my shopping at least. It doesn’t start to hurt until after around 30 minutes of walking and standing.

I can sit at the computer for about the same amount of time before it begins to throb.

However it takes about three hours to complete one photo from a halfway decent proof and I simply can’t sit for three hours at the computer. I still have around 50 proof versions of photos — all ones taken by Ron Vogel or Michael LeRoy. I have another 30+ photos by Elmer Batters, all in magazines. The magazine photos take longer to get into posting shape, so it’s going to take awhile before I can post any of those. I also have a few other magazine photos by other photographers that I have never posted (i.e., Jim Sullivan and Phil Jacobson).

So right now I’m stuck with using my iPad and reading books.

I finally have an appointment to see the specialist on Friday. Maybe I’ll know more after I talk to her.
