In this Virgo Modern Classics edition 63 pages, split across different periods.

The work focuses on the torment, by a loving physician husband, inflicted on a wife, probably suffering post natal depression, as he decides her best recover, only exacerbating the problem further.

This particular work is short, but very powerful. The author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, born in 1860, committed suicide in 1935, arguably lending some further intrigue to her writing. Slightly gothic in flavour.
