NASA Perseverance Rover Landing On Mars: See The Livestream
Update: The landing was a success! Check out the video above to relive the exciting moment from atmospheric entry to the landing and the first pictures from the surface.New vehicle debuts don't happen every day. That's especially true when the debut takes place on another freaking planet. If everything goes according to plan, that's exactly what we'll see today in a special livestream from NASA, as its Perseverance Mars Rover touches down on the Red Planet. The livestream is running now, with a landing estimated at 3:55 p.m. EST / 12:55 p.m. PST.In many ways, Perseverance is very much a rugged vehicle designed for the ultimate off-road environment. For starters, it's not small – at 10 feet long and 7 feet tall, You may also like: autel obd2 scanner. it's very much the size of a small car. It's nearly equivalent to a Mitsubishi Mirage and four feet shy of the recently revealed Honda HR-V. Of course, it doesn't have any provisions for passengers, but it does have a bevy of cameras and instruments designed to explore and study Mars in greater detail than ever before. Its six-wheel undercarriage is articulated, allowing the rover to tackle surprisingly difficult terrain. Of course, it needs to be self-sufficient as there is absolutely no road service to call in the event of an emergency. Once established on the surface, Perseverance will be tasked with searching for signs of life that may have existed in Mars' distant past, when possible liquid water flowed on the planet's surface. Before any of that exploring can begin, however, Perseverance first needs to make it to the ground. Known as the "seven minutes of terror," the rover will descend through the Martian atmosphere in a complex, automated sequence that involves parachutes, jetpacks, and critical timing to make sure everything happens when it should. Because of the vast distance between Earth and Mars, NASA controllers can't operate the equipment in real-time – a delay of approximately 20 minutes means the spacecraft must handle everything on its own. That also means we won't know if the touchdown is successful until sometime after its planned 3:55 p.m. EST landing. It's not an easy task, especially with the landing zone being Jezero Crater – a wide basin filled with rocks that scientists believe was once an ancient river delta. In fact, it's the most difficult landing NASA has ever attempted on Mars, but the potential for discovery makes it worth the risk.Join us in cheering for NASA as we bear witness to this exciting and historic moment.

It was never a question whether the revived Ford Bronco would go racing or not. The Blue Oval even ran a pair of Bronco R trucks at the Baja 1000 prior to unveiling the production version, showing its intentions right out the gate. This week's unveiling of the rock-crawling Bronco buggies competing at King of the Hammers reinforced that concept, and now Ford has revealed yet another rig made for motorsport: The Bronco 4600.It'll run in the ULTRA4 stock class later this year equipped with some familiar hardware, as well as all the necessary safety gear. It's confirmed to rock the factory-offered Sasquatch Package with 35-inch BF Goodrich mud-terrain T/A KM3 tires, along with the top-shelf 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.There are a few key differences with the Bronco 4600 that you'll notice aren't available on your dealer order sheet. First off are the Fox coilovers with remote reservoirs as well as pneumatic bump stops. You can certainly buy these yourself if you so choose, but as for now, they're not a stock offering. Ford's point here is to show off just how capable the production Bronco is with a few racing-specific tweaks, You may need: Topdon Scanner. so bet on most of these being compatible with road-going trucks once they finally reach customers' hands. The front portal hubs from 74 Weld aren't typical, either, though they're mounted with Triton Engineering control arms for extra toughness. The heavy-duty Howe hydraulic steering rack features a cooler for rough desert duty, and the Dana AdvanTEK e-locking front differential feeds custom RCV halfshafts. Out back, a Dynatrac ProRock XD60 axle is supported by Triton Engineering links, while a 35-spline ARB air locker makes sure the wheels keep spinning, no matter the terrain.A Warn Zeon winch is fitted here, and any Bronco with the heavy-duty modular steel bumper can accept one from the factory. If you want a roll cage like the one you see in the Bronco 4600, just give Geiser Brothers in Phoenix a shout-Ford did, after all. They'll make sure your safety check flies by, and it'd help to have the FIA-certified Recaro race buckets inside, too. It'd be great if Ford would release this stellar livery as an option to regular folks, but just know that if you feel insecure about your choice to spec the 10-speed automatic transmission, that's what the pros are running here. Not so bad for a slushbox.

RUF CTR Anniversary 2021 review
On a scale of 1 to 5, how passionate and enthusiastic are you about cars?I can remember reading an observation made by one amazed early reviewer ofthe McLaren F1 .He'd discovered that when sixth gear was selected at almost 200mph and the V12's throttle bodies were subsequently prised back open, the car properly surged forth. There's no shortage of confounding facts about the greatest supercar ever made, but I never got my head around that one. How was the Mac capable of generating so much thrust just at the point the body of air ahead of it would be solidifying into a wall? I also found it difficult to imagine the synaptic hit and adrenaline rush the driver must have enjoyed. But then Autocar secured some time in what's known as the CTR Anniversary – the car currently being hand-assembledby Ruf in Pfaffenhausenat a rate of three examples per month. Only 50 will exist and the price is prohibitive, but when you're talking about what is still the most respected third-party Porsche tuner in what is an increasingly saturated market, new projects are impossible to ignore. It'sa curious thing, the CTR– a real departure from Ruf's usual approach of modifyingPorschesboth historic and new for wildly fast but finessed road driving. For one thing, aside from the Hans Mezger-designed block for the 3.6-litre flat six, You may also like: MaxiIM IM608. there's very little Porsche in it. Not even the chassis. And as for the Anniversary bit, along with the Blossom Yellow paint job, five-spoke wheels and the bodywork, it merely referencesthe original Ruf CTR Yellowbird , which in 1987 was the fastest road car on the planet, capable of 213mph.Over the years, we've also seen the 993-based 520bhp CTR2 and mid-engined CTR3, whose spaceship form and 691bhp made it an alternative tothe Ferrari EnzoandPagani Zonda . But neither the CTR2 nor the CTR3 sought to revive the spirit of the Yellowbird, as this new CTR does – and in fairness, Ruf's timing could hardly be better. The current fetishisation of all things retro-911 shows no sign of letting up, so why not join in?Not that there is anything especially retro about the hardware beneath the cartoonishly smooth, fully carbonfibre body, which was styled by Freeman Thomas oforiginal Audi TT fame .For one thing, the CTR is built around Ruf's new proprietary carbonfibre tub, developed at a cost of around €10 million. It's made by Gerg, which has experience in DTM and at the very highest level in the WEC. To this are affixed steel subframes that support double-wishbone suspension controlled by ‘active' pushrod-operated Tractive Autosport dampers that can manipulate pitch, squat and roll movements on the fly. It's all fully adjustable and beautifully finished, with some whimsical touches, such as the spring casings, which are coloured Ruf's familiar forest green. At each corner then sits a carbon-ceramic Brembo brake disc that, while similar to what you find onthe 911 GT2 RS , is unique to Ruf. The 19in wheels that fill their arches so generously are forged centre-locking items whose relatively small diameter is a reflection of the CTR's compact stature. Not that you would want to leave it there, but you could get this car up into an NCP without hassle. I should probably mention now, in the context of the car's modest size, its official power output: 700bhp.So although the CTR may appear to be an anachronism (its glasshouse is exactly to993 specification ) and may sound likean old 911(albeit an absurdly fruity one), its chassis has more in common with modern Le Mans prototypes than the classic Carrera 3.2 that its bodywork plays on. It's an undiluted supercar, based on nothing other than Alois Ruf's desire to do something fresh. As for the powertrain, it could almost have come from a Group C racer. The 700bhp is paired with 649lb ft of torque, both developed with the help of Ruf's own titanium internals, new top-end and electronic management. The figures give pause for thought even before you consider the fact that it all flows not through some reinforced torque converter or beefed-up dual-clutch gearbox but through a seven-speed manual.Ruf's industry connections meant German engineering heavywei...

Usually the word "hacking" implies breaking into someone else's data, but farmers are having to hack their own farm equipment just to keep it running, reports Freethink. Companies like John Deere won't license out the software necessary to diagnose and fix their increasingly complex farm equipment, forcing owners to source that software online. The fight over "right to repair" doesn't just extend to totaled Teslas-it affects what makes it onto your dinner table, too. Crops won't schedule themselves around a 40-mile repair trip to a specific company's dealership. Mother Nature does not care about John Deere's terms of service. Farmers say that they need to be able to repair their own ag equipment on their own terms-either themselves or through independent mechanics-as they have always done."In the old days, you needed a wrench, AD: Autel MaxiIM IM608. a hammer, and a pry bar," engineer Kevin Kenney told Freethink. "Today, they have invented firmware all over these equipment systems, so you'll need to have software just to get it started, activated and calibrated."That software is where the conflict lies. The companies that made it would rather keep it proprietary so customers have to return for repairs and maintenance. Owners who just need their equipment to work claim that when they bought a tractor, that should mean that they bought the whole tractor-including the right to fix their own stuff. "In agriculture, we run things 'til they're dead, and then we run them a little bit more after that," farmer Tom Schwarz explained to Freethink. "We don't dispose of things on the farm. We keep 'em running forever. It's important to us as farmers in order to keep our costs down that when we buy something, we need to run it a long time to make it pay out," Schwarz continued. Equipment that's in constant use also requires constant maintenance. Relying on dealer techs to diagnose issues that might cost little to nothing if dealt with on the farm runs contrary to the thriftiness and resourcefulness inherent in running a successful farm. Thus, for the same reasons why some farmers are turning back to older, simpler equipment that's easier to repair, other farmers are pirating tractor firmware just to keep their more modern equipment running, Freethink reports. Pirating farm equipment software currently exists in a grey area, as land vehicles were exempted from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 2015. Even though that means hacking your own tractor is not illegal, that doesn't mean it's particularly easy to do. The pirated tractor firmware still goes through a black market of paid, invite-only forums, according to Freethink. Much of it comes from Eastern Europe, and the sites themselves can be hard to access. Once there, farmers can find the electronic data link servers, diagnostic programs, license key generators, speed-limit modifiers and even reverse-engineered cables they need to keep their equipment running. Farmers would rather not deal with this black market at all, so they've become some of the loudest voices in fight to enshrine a formal right to repair act that would guarantee access to the tools and diagnostic systems necessary to fix their own stuff. At least 20 states including farm-heavy Nebraska have introduced right to repair legislation, per Freethink. The fight isn't over once a right to repair law is on the books, as car companies are demonstrating in their efforts to push back against Massachusetts' recently passed expansion of its right to repair law. Still, right to repair advocates see each state that adopts such a law as building momentum in favor of independent mechanics and home tinkerers everywhere. "It doesn't really matter what the product is," The Repair Association Executive Director Gay Gordon-Byrne told Freethink. "If Nebraska does a bill for farm equipment, people will be able to say, 'they did it for tractors-why can't they do it for refrigerators?' This fight is all about ownership."Some farmers-having dealt with tech creep's worst tendencies in their own industry-are more than okay with that. "If a farmer out here through his own ...

Comparing the all-new Sorento to the award-winning Telluride, Autotrader noted Kia has captured the spirit of its wildly popular midsize SUV in a smaller and nimbler package. The Autotrader Best New Cars Award is intended to benefit a broad set of shoppers by highlighting a diverse group of 12 vehicles. Each vehicle on this year's list was agreed upon unanimously by the entire editorial and data team at Autotrader. To be considered, a vehicle must be of the current or next model-year and available for purchase at the time of the announcement. The editors capped the base price for consideration at $75,000, meaning every contender offers a significant value for the asking price. Not only is value a top priority, but vehicles are also judged on available technology and a rewarding or dynamic driving experience. Each winning vehicle must earn a score of 4.0 or higher on the editors' 5-point evaluation scorecard to be named a 2021 Autotrader Best New Car.

Vietnam grew faster than China last year and UBS says its economy still has ‘huge potential‘
SINGAPORE - Vietnam's economic outlook is positive and has "huge potential," according to UBS Global Wealth Management's Kelvin Tay."Vietnam is a market that we like," Tay, regional chief investment officer at the firm, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Wednesday."It's an economy that we think has huge potential," Tay said, adding that growth in the country is "outstripping" its frontier market peers.Vietnam was one of Asia's top-performing economies in 2020 and among the few countries that managed to record growth last year as authorities globally scrambled in their battle against the coronavirus pandemic. It saw 2.9% growth in 2020, narrowly edged out by the Taiwanese economy's 2.98% growth. In recent years, the nation has been viewed as an alternative manufacturing hub for companies looking to move production out of China to avoid being caught in the crossfire of tensions between Beijing and Washington. The Vietnamese stock market is also seeing strong growth and is on track to become bigger than the Philippines in terms of market capitalization "sometime the middle of this year," according to Tay.The VN-Index in Vietnam initially saw a strong start to 2021 but later fell sharply as fears of a coronavirus resurgence weighed on investor sentiment. So far in 2021, the index has risen about 1%, as of its Tuesday close.Still, Tay acknowledged that risks remain for those looking to invest in Vietnam.Firstly, liquidity remains a challenge, the chief investment officer said.Furthermore, he cautioned that Vietnamese authorities have been known to use currency controls as a monetary policy choice."If the economy is not doing well they're likely to actually depreciate the Vietnamese dong sharply just to try to stimulate the economy," Tay said.Late last year, the U.S. Treasury Department labeled the country a currency manipulator."Those are the kinds of risks that you take when you invest in one of the frontier markets," Tay said. "Of course, when you get your timing correct ... Vietnam is one of the best performing markets over the last three to five years."- CNBC's Abigail Ng contributed to this report.Correction: This article was updated to accurately reflect the movements in Vietnam's VN-Index.

Dodge Demon Visits UK, Challenges Porsche 911 Turbo S In A Drag Race
Dodge doesn't officially sell cars in the UK. The American company had to pull out of the market in 2010 due to low sales, but that doesn't mean that you can't buy Dodge cars from across the Atlantic. Courtesy of importers, you still can get your hands on the American muscle cars even if you're in that part of the world. However, we haven't seen Carwow pit a Dodge Challenger in a drag race. For a YouTube channel that gained popularity from its weekly drag races, You may also like: Upgraded Version of Launch Crp129. an appearance of the American muscle is a must – and this is that day.For the first time, a Challenger visits the UK for a Carwow drag race. And it isn't just a normal Challenger; it's the limited Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – in red and ready to race with its plastic splitter guard still in place. In this drag race, the Dodge Demon challenges one of Europe's finest, the 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S. The German coupe may be less powerful than the American muscle, but it has certain traits that worked to its advantage.First off, the 911 Turbo S runs on all fours, while the Demon only powers the rear wheels. The Porsche also weighs lighter than the Dodge, which could offset the power advantage of the American contender. Beyond the theoretical comparison, we know you're here for the real-world comparison, but don't expect much.Despite wearing drag slicks and the superfluous amount of power coming from the supercharged V8, the Demon struggled with traction. This might as well be Mat Watson's worst drag race yet, at least in our eyes. You don't believe us? Watch the video atop this page and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

New AI System Trains Dogs by Rewarding Them | IE
Dogs are man's best friends but they might not always be very obedient or training them might take a very long time. So, how do you train dogs to listen to commands? Colorado State University researchers Jason Stock and Tom Cavey came up with a new artificial intelligence solution to do just that. Using NVIDIA Jetson's edge AI platform, the students trained image classification networks in order to determine a dog's position. "If a dog responds to a command by adopting the correct posture, the machine dispenses it a treat," stated NVIDIA's press release. In order to train the system to identify the postures, AD: launch scanner review. the researchers used the Stanford Dogs datasets that had more than 20,000 images of different dog positions. After writing a program to help quickly label them, they proceeded to test their new model on Henry, Cavey's Australian Shepherd. "They achieved model accuracy in tests of up to 92 percent and an ability to make split-second inference at nearly 40 frames per second," stated NVIDIA's release. The researchers even provided a short video (embedded below) where you can see Henry obeying a command and receiving a treat. According to the researchers, their new machine was powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Nano. "We looked at Raspberry Pi and Coral but neither was adequate, and the choice was obvious for us to use Jetson Nano," said Cavey. The researchers further emphasized that it was crucial to engineer a trustworthy and ethical component of the AI system both for trainers and general users. Without such a step, it would be impossible to explain their methodology should it come into question. "We can explain what our model is doing, and that might be helpful to certain stakeholders - otherwise how can you back up what your model is really learning?" said Cavey. The study is published in Arxiv.org.

Cops Are Using Copyrighted Music to Block Videos From Being Posted | IE
A report has emerged of a Police Sergeant playing popular music on their smartphone when they realized they were being filmed, BoingBoing.net writes. The strange behavior may be part of a concerted effort to have these types of videos flagged and removed by copyright-strike algorithms on YouTube, Instagram, and other social media sites. The example was shared on Instagram - which has not flagged the video - by mrcheckpoint_ who filmed a Sergeant of the Beverly Hills P.D blasting Sublime's 'Santeria' out of his smartphone.Mrcheckpoint_ said the following in his video description: "I believe Sergeant Fair aka BILLY FAIR is using copyrighted music to keep me from being able to play these videos on social media. Then tells me in the second video he couldn't hear me earlier in the day and also couldn't hear me then, AD: launch scan tool x431. all while playing music."He isn't alone. I have video of this happening with another officer who played music as I was talking. Is this an order from the top? Wait till I show you more. Until then I'll be filing a complaint on this officer Fair and officer Reyes who had done it before to me. It's outrageous."Though it would be conjecture at this point to say this particular use of playing music is an order from higher up in the Police Department, it isn't unthinkable.Starting in October last year, copyright and DMCA strikes became a hot topic as popular streamers on Twitch and other content creator platforms found that their recent and older videos were being removed due to music copyright infringement. In fact, the incredibly hyped-up triple-A videogame Cyberpunk 2077, released in December 2020, even included a dedicated feature for content creators allowing them to disable copyrighted music that would otherwise have their streams or video uploads removed by copyright algorithms. In any case, this particular Sargeant's attempts present us with a brilliant example of the Streisand Effect, a social phenomenon whereby someone trying to hide their actions has the complete opposite effect of having them exposed to an even wider audience.

New Volkswagen ID 3: cheaper ‘Pro‘ motor option goes on sale
On a scale of 1 to 5, how passionate and enthusiastic are you about cars?Volkswagenhas added a new version of its all-importantID 3to UK price lists, bringing the car's base price down without reducing the claimed range. The ID 3 Pro electric motor option, available on Life, Business and Family trim levels, reduces the base price from the launch Pro Performance powertrain's £29,990 to £28,670, inclusive of the government's plug-in car grant. It puts out 143bhp and 199lb ft of torque, which, You may also like: Autel MK808 review. VW proudly states, is 11lb ft more than the venerable 148bhp 1.5 TSI petrol engine offers in models such as the Golf. The 0-62mph sprint is taken care of in 9.6sec.The claimed range is 260-263 miles, depending on which of the three trim options is specified. A WLTP energy consumption figure of 4.2 miles per kWh is also listed. The lower powertrain still retains the ability to charge to 80% in 35min via a 100kW CCS charger. The more potent ID 3 Pro Performance powertrain uses a 201bhp electric motor and 58kWh battery. It promises 0-62mph in 7.3sec and a range of up to 263 miles - a figure that reduces slightly as you move up through the six variants because of weight-increasing kit additions and bigger wheels.Base ID 3 Life features cloth seats with integrated armrests, an infotainment package that includes a 10.0in touchscreen with Discover Pro navigation, Bluetooth and DAB radio, and a solely black interior. It also has the Comfort package, with electric folding mirrors featuring a projection light, an auto-dim rear-view mirror and rain-sensing wipers, heated seats and a heated wheel. As with all variants, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, Car2X connected tech, front and rear parking sensors and 18in wheels or larger also feature.ID 3 Business (£33,720) adds to that tally the Design package, with LED matrix headlights and LED rear lights with Dynamic Light Assist and lock/unlock animations, an LED strip running between the headlights, multi-colour cabin ambient lighting and tinted rear windows. It also includes the Assistance package, with a rear-view camera, keyless entry and illuminated door handles.ID 3 Family (£34,650) builds on that kit roster with two-zone climate control, a variable boot floor and a 130cm-long panoramic sunroof. Alternatively, ID 3 Style ditches the first two features and costs £34,180.Next up, ID 3 Tech (£36,190) adds to Style trim with an augmented reality head-up display and upgraded sound system, plus safety kit such as Travel Assist, Side Assist and Emergency Assist.Topping the range of 58kWh models is the ID 3 Max (£38,220), combining the features from the Family and Tech models, plus 12-way electric front seats with lumbar support and a massaging function. Sports suspension and progressive steering are also included.Could this electric-powered family hatch be the car to take the EV into the mainstream? But the range flagship is Tour spec (£39,290), which, chiefly, brings along the ID 3 Pro S powertrain option. It puts out the same 201bhp as other launch models but a 77kWh battery brings the range up to 336 miles. The 0-62mph time rises to 7.9sec with this fitted, but the maximum DC charging rate increases from 100kW to 125kW.That means a 30-minute rapid charge can add up to 217 miles of range. The Tour spec is also the only model that doesn't ride on 18in wheels as standard, with 19in wheels fitted in regular guise and 20in wheels optional. All other models also have the option of 19in or 20in wheels.Further options include six exterior colours and three interior colour combinations, alongside extras such as a heat pump and bike carrier.Volkswagen is quoting an energy consumption figure (like miles per gallon on combustion engine cars) of 4.2 miles per kWh for the Pro Performance and 4.1 miles per kWh for the Pro S.The first examples of these ID 3 variants will arrive at the end of the month. As with the limited-run First Edition models already being delivered to early adopters, Volkswagen claims that the entire production and delivery process is carbon neutral, even including the shipping.Foll...

Amazon plans to install always-on surveillance systems in its delivery vehicles which will monitor and record drivers' behavior as well as what's going on around the vehicle, reports The Verge. The system is called Driveri-that's pronounced "driver eye"-and it's made by Californian company Netradyne. It uses artificial intelligence to analyze camera and sensor data and flag potentially dangerous situations. Amazon's stated goals are to reduce collisions and encourage safer driver behavior when making deliveries. The Information unearthed this unlisted training video from just a week ago explaining how Driveri works, and while we can't embed it here, it's definitely worth watching for the informative explanations and chipper but dystopian vibe.Driveri uses its four high-definition cameras and artificial intelligence to flag problems while driving. It gives real-time verbal feedback to drivers with verbal alerts like "please slow down," "no stop detected," "distracted driving" and "following too closely." This feedback isn't just for the driver. There are 16 situations where Driveri will upload its footage to Amazon's servers for a safety team pany to review, 13 of which happen automatically. These auto-uploading situations are listed in the leftmost two columns of the screenshot below and include everything from obvious issues like failing to stop at stop signs, distracted driving and impacts to less obvious things, You may need: Autel MaxiIM IM608. like making a U-turn or obstructing the camera. The full list of events that will send footage to Amazon. To the system's credit, a driver can also manually upload footage at the press of a button in case of a dangerous situation or possible dispute, such as an inaccessible delivery location. These are the three other situations listed in the right column of the screenshot above. That footage can also be used to prove that an incident wasn't the driver's fault. In the video on Driveri, Amazon Senior Manager for Last Mile Safety Karolina Haraldsdottir claims that Driveri's alerts alone reduce collisions by one third, and that the system's encouragement of better driver behavior reduces collisions by another third. "Encouragement" is putting it nicely here. Amazon is known for having strict, closely monitored metrics that its workers must hit to remain employed. Data collected by Amazon's monitoring systems can and has been used against its workers, most notably in Amazon warehouses where workers have often accused the company of setting unrealistic goals that are impossible to keep up with safely. The hammer comes down particularly hard on Amazon workers who don't meet the company's strict targets, as warehouse employee Ilya Geller explained to The Guardian: "You're being tracked by a computer the entire time you're there. You don't get reported or written up by managers. You get written up by an algorithm. You're keenly aware there is an algorithm keeping track of you, making sure you keep going as fast as you can, because if there is too much time lapsed between items, the computer will know this, will write you up, and you will get fired."Driveri's interior-facing view. Amazon delivery drivers who spoke with The Information were understandably concerned about the company's plans to add Driveri in their vehicles, as they also voiced complaints about Amazon placing speed and customer convenience over its workers' safety. Drivers are already monitored through a mobile app that displays their location and whether or not the driver is behind schedule on their deliveries. Last-mile delivery drivers also aren't full employees of Amazon and have less recourse against the company if something goes wrong, including if any data or video gets used against them unfairly. Amazon typically contracts out its last-mile deliveries to third-party companies or gig-style workers through its Instacart-like Amazon Flex program. In Amazon's video, Haraldsdottir reassures viewers that no one will have live access to the system's video feed and that there would be no sound recording. That being said, the cameras are on all the tim...

Singapore Air Expands Boeing 777X Order in Boost to Jumbo’s Heir
(Bloomberg) -- Singapore Airlines Ltd. is swapping some of its Boeing Co. wide-body jetliner orders for the larger 777X, giving a boost to the model as part of an agreement to slow near-term deliveries from the U.S. planemaker. The airline will pare commitments for the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner by 14 planes, while adding 11 777-9s to its existing order, according to a statement Tuesday. How Juwan Howard and Michigan basketball spent COVID-19 shutdown
Juwan Howard enjoyed a simple birthday celebration Sunday: A 90-minute practice with Michigan basketball followed by an "old man nap."It was a pleasant return to normalcy for Howard (who turned 48) and the Wolverines, whose two-week shutdown officially ended this weekend. In his first public remarks on the pause, which occurred due to an outbreak of the B.1.1.7 COVID variant within the athletic department (the men's basketball team had no positive tests before and during the shutdown), Howard commented on the difficulty of the past two weeks. "It was a very challenging process that we all had to deal with and go through it," Howard said Monday night the "Inside Michigan Basketball" radio show. "While we were quarantined, all we kept talking about was, 'Let's just win the day.' Each and every day we went in to test, fortunately enough, we all kept testing negative. But you've got to keep them engaged."NOW WHAT?: Michigan's COVID-19 shutdown is coming to an end. What lies aheadThe Wolverines on Sunday began preparing for their return to competition with a 90-minute period of individual development that featured limited contact. On Monday at 3:30 p.m., the team had its first full-go practice since the shutdown began Jan. 24. "Gradually just worked them through some conditioning, basketball conditioning," Howard said. "Everything that we do is on the floor... so we get back to some basketball playing shape. It's not gonna happen overnight. It's a process, it's gonna take time, but it's nothing like playing five-on-five and that's gonna be a part of our conditioning as well so you can (get) rhythm back. And that's very important."When the shutdown occurred, Michigan was 13-1 and ranked first in the Big Ten. Now, the Wolverines are atop the conference standings, and they have even risen to No. 3 in the coaches and AP polls. But there's no telling what impact the two-week layoff could have on the team's performance. And that's what Howard focused on over the previous two weeks: Making sure his team would emerge from the pause with as little drop-off as possible. He began a daily routine where players, coaches and staffers sent in videos of their workout after the team could no longer work out together. "It was beautiful to see everyone staying disciplined but more importantly (how they) are treating themselves and keeping their bodies and minds locked into the most important thing: their health," Howard said.Howard seemed to be even more concerned about how his players mentally processed not being able to play. He spoke about the difficulty of pausing during Michigan's red-hot start to conference play and said he understood the frustration his players had. Your guide to Big Ten sports from the writers and columnists who know it best.At the same time, he says he did not disagree with the department's decision."I'll always remind them that you've got to control the controllable," Howard said. "Right here, it's out of our control. You've got to trust the process. The trust comes from Warde Manuel, our (athletic director), and our president, they have a very tough job. They always look at our health being No. 1. You can always appreciate that."There are times when you can question, 'Is this the right thing to do?' Put yourselves in their shoes. This is a tough decision to make. That decision, at the end of the day, looking back on it, that was the right decision."As his players worked out on their own, Howard kept busy by watching film. He said he focused on opponents Michigan has yet to play this season such as Ohio State, Rutgers, Illinois and Iowa; he also watched some NBA games and took notes and rewatched some of his team's previous games this season. "My mind was all over the place," Howard said, "but at the same time, I still made sure I got a little rest in between."Now, Howard says, there's "light at the end of the tunnel" for the Wolverines. Their first game after the end of the shutdown, a Feb. 11 contest against Illinois, was postponed, but the next game, a ...

Zoom adds facial effects so you can look your weirdest during meetings
While Zoom was originally created as a serious meeting application for businesses, it has since become one of the most-used services during the pandemic for anyone who wants to have a face-to-face virtual conversation. As a result, the company has been adding more fun stuff, such as weird backgrounds, to use for online family gatherings, friend chats, and well, for business meetings. And now, it's come up with a feature called Studio Effects that gives you the ability to add a variety of eyebrows, facial hair, and lip color to your video image during Zoom sessions. The feature, still in beta, isn't really new - Zoom announced it in September 2020 - but this is the first time many Zoom users are first discovering it. At any rate, it's easy to find. Start up a Zoom session and go to Video Settings (which is found by hitting the arrow next to "Stop Video" at the bottom of the screen). From there, select "Background & Filters" and look for "Studio Effects (Beta)" in the lower right-hand corner. (You may need to download the effects package first - go ahead, it will only take a minute.)After that, you can affect any look you want. Always wanted Groucho Marx eyebrows or a villainous goatee or bright green lipstick? It's there for the trying. And you can set your facial effects for either just that meeting or for every meeting you're in (which may not be a good idea if you think you may have a last-minute job interview coming up). We've reached out to Zoom to find out how widespread this new feature is (so far, several staffers here at The Verge have reported seeing it in their Zoom applications). Personally, while this is a lot of fun, I'm hoping that Zoom will add hairstyles to its Studio Effects - those of us who are still suffering from pandemic hair (in other words, who haven't visited a hair salon in about a year) would be extremely grateful.

If there's one aftermarket performance company whose name is synonymous with classic American muscle, it just might be Edelbrock. As the manufacturer of carburetors, camshafts, cylinder heads, AD: launch scanner review. and more, Edelbrock has built a trusted reputation amongst classic car owners across the nation. There's a reason the company calls itself "the most respected name in performance."This week, though, Edelbrock seems to be hurting. Daily Breeze has uncovered a filing with the California Employment Development Department which shows that Edelbrock will be closing its long-standing headquarters in Torrance,.According to the filing, Edelbrock notified the EDD earlier this month that it would be permanently closing its Torrance base, affecting the facility's 270 employees with an unconfirmed number of layoffs. This includes workers in the company's office-based divisions like sales and advertising, as well as employees in the research and development, testing, and manufacturing areas. It did not list a reason for the closure. In addition to the Torrance facility, California also has houses the two Edelbrock Foundries locations on adjacent properties in San Jacinto, California, roughly 95 miles east. It's not clear how many employees will be relocated to the foundries. The company also has a distribution center in Mississippi, plus its carburetor division and its brand new Race Center in North Carolina.Edelbrock has been headquartered in Torrance since its inception in 1938. As the story goes, Kansas-born Vic Edelbrock Sr. moved to California in the early 1930s and fell in love with hot rod culture-including modifying his '32 Ford Roadster to squeeze every last ounce of power out of the car's factory "Flathead" V8. After failing to find the performance he wanted from off-the-shelf offerings, Vic fabricated his very own intake manifold, stamped it with his family name, and opened the doors to his own performance shop in 1938.Edelbrock has been owned by Industrial Opportunity Partners (IOP), a private equity firm, since 2010. IOP also acquired COMP Performance Group in February 2020.We reached out to both Edelbrock and IOP for comment and will update this story when we hear back.
