Artist Statement
Here I have stood, for many years.
Stories of the past scattered,
Amongst my wood.
Imbedded in my grain, Just like the ash from cigarettes,
And that one coffee stain.
Here I have stood, listening quietly,
To tears of sorrow,
And the baby’s cry.
And here I stand, to this day.
The family has gotten older, and some have moved away.
But when you come back, and find your place,
A hint of childhood wonder will still be there to embrace.

Project Statement
I began analysing what evolution and unpredictability means, not only as a whole-but what it means to me and my artistic practice. Throughout my body of work, I constantly questioned my methodology. At first, I looked at birth and evolution in a literal sense. I found I was plateauing and decided to make the work personal to myself. Exploring themes of the true/false self and finally intimate relationships throughout my childhood. I used a series of mediums I was unfamiliar with, which I found help elevate the work in ways I could not before. My body of work reflected not only the evolution and unpredictability of myself, but also my artistic process.

'Flat packed chair'
My paint finally arrived so I was able to create this large scale print. I used colours I associate with my grans kitchen- peach, brown and mint green. i feel as if the colours have worked well together and the mint green was definitely needed to add more depth to this piece.
I have used a double flat bedsheet to create this work which is actually off-white, although this doesn't show in the photographs. I hadn’t realised how time-consuming this piece would be at was extremely difficult to create in the small make-shift studio I have. Overall I am pleased with the result. I imagine if I had the means to display this piece properly I would actually like it more.
As the piece is so big my only option was to hang it on the washing line to take pictures, which obviously isn’t ideal but I do believe you get a better feel for the scale of the piece.
Given I had more time to add to the piece, I believe i may of incorporated words and possibly textiles. I think it needs more added to it as it feels unfinished to me. Although, this could be due to working on such a large scale (that’s not sculptural) for the first time.
Thinking about sculpture, I think it would be really effective if It could actually stand on its own using possibly starch or fabric stiffer. Maybe on an even larger scale. Or using glass as a medium could be interesting.

Video taken by myself
I have been trying to focus on the chair as an object of my childhood again, as I feel my work could take a drastic turn if I focus on what the chair means to me in the present moment.
I was thinking about what memories of my grans house I can remember whilst sitting on the chair, I used a series of images from the internet and also images I have taken myself and formatted them into a short video.
I decided to use a voile curtain and project on to it with the chair sitting behind it. Creating a separation between the chair and the images. I felt as if showing the images directly on top of the chair would convey a different message. Having it project on the voile curtain shows the separation between the chair and the memories. In a way, I project my memories on to the chair.
Due to lack of space and resources I wasn't able to create the installation in a way I felt represented what I wanted to portray. My space was extremely restricted hence why the video is shot side on-and without a tripod.
Given I had more space I would of loved to experiment with the projection and where it comes from- behind the curtain, far away, close up etc
Although I was restricted in what I could do I am really pleased with the outcome. I have used the same sound I had created for a previous workshop. As I felt it fit with the installation. I think it would be interesting if this was being exhibited to have speakers placed in different areas. Creating a surround sound affect, the words seeming far away, then extremely close. Almost invasive, this may be down to the fact I am opening myself up to the viewer. Which is invasive for me, so in turn I wish them to have an invasive experience with me.

Further edits I have created, still following along the same lines as the work I have created before. I feel as if it crucial to include these. Outside factors always have a gift of permeating through your work. Now and only now have I been hyper-aware of this.

As I continued to manipulate the chairs, I had noticed the images had became darker, eerie and quite honestly verging on the ‘uncanny valley’
My gran has actually been extremely sick recently, her immune system is severely compromised and with Covid cases on the rise it is definitely an unsettling time for myself and my family.
I believe these external factors are actually affecting my work, and my process as a whole. Instead of focusing on the chairs as a representation of my childhood I have began looking at the chair as an object and nothing more. It is almost as if I am wanting the chairs to mutate and become unrecognisable. To protect myself from the problems that have recently arisen.
I have never thought so critically about my artistic process before, how it is so fragile external factors and your work begins to morph into something to help you cope.

The clay cube is dry, but I have now realised I have run out of white paint! I decided to continue on with the photo edits. I think they could work well large scale in a billboard/poster format due to the simplicity of the design. I decided to invert the colours and manipulate the chairs shape. Questioning how far away from a chair can I possibly make it.

As I am still waiting for the clay to dry, I decided to develop my chair edits further. Manipulating the background colour and mirroring the chair to see what shapes can be made. I find this an outlet to use the colours I love- Bright, demanding and bold. As I fully plan on using a muted palette for my print. I really enjoyed the edits I have made. I really would like to overlay text on top of the images but I can’t seem to find the write font that would sit well.

I have began to think more deeply about the colour scheme I wish to use, hence the background of this drawing. When I think about my grans kitchen (where the chairs are kept) I think of peaches, beige and mint green. I found myself struggling to keep the colours so soft and that is why I painted the chair in black. I wonder if I can suppress my urges to create bold artworks whilst I create the large scale print.

I don’t deem this small artwork to be in anyway refined. I thought it showed an element of curiosity and a playful approach to working with found materials. I feel it is an interesting development and gave me an opportunity to work more autonomously, I never set out a plan for these drawings. I just knew it was something I had to do. As if my brain had to mull over in my ideas for a while before continuing. I found it a really relaxing exercise as I never felt pressured to have a ‘perfect’ outcome, my goal was only to make. So I did.

I am still waiting for the clay block to dry- I never took into consideration the drying time for larger pieces of clay but I am confident it will be dry within the next few days so I can begin work on my large scale print.
In the meantime, I wanted to create small artworks reflecting the chair within a 2D format. This is my favourite piece from the small series I created. The fold of the ripped envelope definitely adds depth to the collage, eluding to the idea of a room. I also used an unsuccessful cyanotype to create more of a contrast and i believe it has worked very well.  The colour scheme is something I have began to think about as I have not yet chosen any colours I wish to create on my large scale print. I want these colours to seem familiar to me, possibly representing my grans kitchen-where the chairs are kept. This will be a personal development for myself as I tend not to work in muted earth-toned colours.

I have been using Pinterest as a quick way to source imagery I find inspiring and have helped me throughout the process of creating a body of work. I have decided to attach it here as a means to show where my work could of led. I was very tempted to use textiles as it is something I associate with my gran, but for this project I had decided at the beginning I would push myself out my comfort boundaries. I wanted to paint and draw more, as it is something I feel my body of work tends to lack in as I work to create sculptural outcomes.

A closer look at the clay cube, including one of he cube in my hand to put the scale into context. As i am working with a bigger cube this time I plan on working on a much larger scale. I only have A1 paper available but I believe it may look best on an even larger scale.
I have been thinking of what I can use to create this and have decided on using a bedsheet. This would be my first time working on such a large scale and would really like to try it as I believe I will be able to gain valuable knowledge from the experience.

The impressions made by the chair.
I’m really pleased at how the impressions on the cube turned out. They show the intricate details of the chair- but also using this form of medium seems to abstract them in a way. If you never knew where the impressions were taken from, you would have no idea it was actually a chair.
I plan on letting this dry out for a couple of days before I create prints with it. I found during my first attempt at printing with clay, the clay was not fully dry and had began mixing with the paint.

I have been contemplating how I can use my gran’s chair without damaging it in the process. I decided to create an impression on the chair-similar to the clay cubes I had done at the beginning of the project. I want the clay cube to be on a much larger scale than what I have done before.

Risograph Workshop
Due to the current circumstances I unfortunately will not be able to use the risograph machine. I decided to prepare photos in the hopes I will be able to use it in the future. Here is Images where I have been able to create a CMYK separation. The grayscale images now only need a colour overlay in order to print my risographs.
