A lot of the time, when I think about queer theory and queer advancements, about trans identity and trans rights, I think about a quote from John Adams. If you don’t know the quote, it’s the one that starts: “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.” And within two generations, his grandchildren have the liberty to study porcelain.

Now, there’s a lot of stuff to unpack in the original quote, and I’m not going to do that, because that’s not the point of what I’m talking about tonight.

Every time that I struggle with my own dysphoria, with finding centeredness as someone who couldn’t come out as non-binary until I was in my 30s, after struggling with it for a decade and a half, I think about my daughter.

I think about my daughter who got to come out at 15.

I think about the conversations she gets to have with her peers about gender identity, about sexuality, about the intersection between her autistic identity and her gender identity, between her Jewish identity and her sexuality, & these convos are so far beyond my teen years.

We didn’t have the language to discuss so much of this two, three decades ago. We were doing very different work at the time. And there were things we had to leave behind in order to get to where we are now.

I’m not always sure we made the right decisions, but I studied politics and war so that my daughter may study mathematics and philosophy. She has the language to speak about her experiences in a way I didn’t have at her age. She came out at fifteen.

Sometimes, that’s all I’ve got, and I have to be okay with that.

We still must study war and politics, don’t get me wrong, bc our community is threatened constantly – but it is my hope that the war and politics I studied in this metaphor lets my metaphorical queer descendants have a little more peace than I had in my childhood.

As a Jewish historian, I fucking hate Israel in ways most probably will never be able to comprehend. I'm going to try and explain it anyways. The central creation myth of Israel is that it is Jewish, and then consequently, that Israel is a part of Jewishness. Its easy to simply state this is false, but fully comprehending this and putting it into practice in thought and deed seems rare to me.

The evil at the heart of this violence predates the recent acceleration of genocide. Israel is a colony, and more than that, an antisemitic fraud itself. After WW2, when Israel was being founded, the Jews of Europe generally did not wave goodbye to their neighbors and head to the promised land. Many were expelled from their homes. Zionism itself, as an action, was a false choice at the time. A mere excuse to place an ally in the middle east, and an excuse to complete the expulsion and destruction of the European Jew. The Zionist Jew is more than complicit in this, they actively seek the destruction and assimilation of all other Jews.

Many fail to realize, and largely because of Israel, that Jews are not inherently white, Ashkenazi, European-descended people. Our faith and culture has an immense variety that is spread all across the globe. Jewishness, in population and volume of culture, exists more so outside of Israel than within it. Israel is for a very specific kind of Jew. The kind that lets Yiddish die, that attaches themselves to European things, that makes themselves and their practices as white as possible.

And they have the nerve, the fucking belligerent GALL, to frame themselves as the necessary saviors of our people. To the Zionist, questioning Israel is to question Jewishness itself. They bake adoration for the colonial machine into their very prayers, and push them on us even as children. To *not* oppress, to *not* kill, to *not* genocide, is to invite death. This is the core of fascistic thought, of course. "Kill them before they kill us." And they KNOW this too, they really do. The truth of that irony does not matter, because as is true for all fascists, the truth itself does not matter to them. They wanted this, they wanted this even before the British saw it in their best interest to give them the land. the Columbia University arrests are worse than they seem. They're arresting protesting students for trespassing. It goes without saying students cannot meaningfully "trespass" in the common areas of a university they attend. So Columbia University has suspended all student protestors from their institution, in the process revoking their access to housing, their belonging, and most crucially damaging their academic futures. We are witnessing full scale silencing and removal of anyone of conscience from the next generation of academia.

Pointing out that the Rapture as a concept is a little less than two hundred years old - it's originally from the 1833 - that really buries the lede on how recent it is. I think we should go easier on Tumblr staff, they don't seem to be on board with the Matt nonsense. cyle just reblogged foone's "Tumblr pride flag" post that included a line about "being banned from Tumblr because you're a trans woman", jv leaked/confirmed a bunch of info about the Midjourney deal, and zingring came back from sabbatical to confirm the information about the moderator who was taking bribes to ban trans women last year. not to mention the efforts of the ex employees, especially tinystepsforward and sreegs.
