around the pieces that shatter it’s a surety that a hard shell will form, that she’ll be protected from the pain and shielded from whatever fallout is on its way. typically it’s self-inflicted to some degree, but in this case especially? fuck, in this case mellie’s certain her self destruction will come with a fury that’s rarely — if ever — been seen before.
and she hates it. so, the shell forming is met with heavy resistance as she pulls in a deep breath and takes a step closer.
what does she have to lose in taking one more swing at fixing this? mellie has to try to fix this, the idea of withstanding another heartbreak is really just unfathomable right now. she just can’t do it.
“you don’t get to decide what i’m better off with or without,” words are firm, matched with a scowl as she takes a step closer, “olivia, i swear to god, i’m exhausted. i’m so fucking exhausted because people just keep deciding things for me. they decide how i feel, they decide how i’m thinking, they… they decide who i love.” mellie grows quieter as she presses forward, emotion weaving through her words like vines of ivy growing too rapidly and too aggressively to stop.
“you didn’t want to hurt me? do you even hear yourself right now, liv? do you…” mellie paces in a circle, eyes shutting as she comes to stand still again, “do you have a single clue how much i… i…”
“i love you, liv. i… i can’t explain it, but i’m certain it’s true and i don’t know what i’d do if you didn’t… if you didn’t at least give me a chance here,” anguish extends to her voice as one last push is made in a battle she hopes so desperately to win, as mellie’s certain she genuinely feels her heart hanging precariously off the edge of a cliff. the question now… will olivia come to rescue it or will she let it fall?
there it was, out in the open.
what olivia had been avoiding, not because she didn’t have feelings for the woman across from her, they were inescapable with how long it had been. a kiss was all that she needed to confirm that what she felt for mellie wasn’t something that would disappear, that it went beyond lust.
there was little that olivia feared in this world after all that she had been through, and it’s here that there’s a reminder that she’s not immune to it. in all the forms fear takes, it’s the idea of someone loving her that terrifies her -- she’s seen what it’s done to her parents, how senseless it’s made fitz act in the past. there’s a small part of her that wants to leave the situation and avoid this altogether and she can’t.
she can’t leave this with mellie in pieces when she’s the one that brought it up, brought up everything that could be if she could let go of the pressures of what mellie could lose for this.
❛ i’ve always protected you, that’s why i’m doing this. i want you to have what you’ve given up everything for. you can’t be that blind, mellie. ❜ and anything even slightly immoral would have her thrown out of the oval, no matter how much change had been made over the years, it wasn’t enough. there were steps that had to be taken, one as big as this wasn’t one that the country was ready for.
her breathing is shallow with the confession and mellie’s eyes on hers, and she takes the step forward and then another until her face is mere inches from the president’s. ❛ i wouldn’t do this for someone i didn’t... love, mellie. you may not see it now, but i don’t want to be something you’ll regret. where you’re at now comes once. ❜

I don’t know why you would. you’re better off on that side, focusing on what matters.”
