“Hey,” Gunner’s answer was automatic, a lazy thing that barely crawled out of his mouth as he sat in a sprawl in one of the bean bags in the room. If he really wanted to, he could’ve fallen asleep right then and there. A steady mix of the drinks he’d consumed and an inadvertent second hand high rendered him useless, but when his brain registered that it was Dom talking to him, he immediately perked up, “Hey. Shit, thanks,” he all but rasped, reaching out to clutch at the water bottle Dom was handing out towards him. He chugged half of it in record time, throwing his head back after and patting at the bean bag beside him with his free hand, “I can’t move. I’ve tried so many times, but I’m too high. But I can’t get back to normal if I don’t get outta here, y’know? I started to feel better when I accepted that I’d just be stuck here for the night, though. Just keep me company for a bit. Please?”

philly hung from the mouth of the dinosaur model like she’d been crushed beneath its’ teeth, limbs sticking out from between tooth gaps like the bars of a cage - that’s what the mouth had felt like; a cage. it hadn’t been a particularly large exhibit - only eight feet tall - but she still had managed to find herself stuck between jaw. hardly minded it, though - felt natural, almost, like every time she’d gotten stuck on a tree’s branches. “hello,” she greeted a passerby, bent upside down - secure in the dinosaur’s mouth and narrowly avoiding tooth against spine, “it seems i’ve gotten very stuck. do you have a drink on you? i’m quite parched.”

Gunner had spent the better part of five minutes now sloshing around the drink in his cup. He’d had it in his mind at this point that somehow, he hadn’t mixed it quite right, that he’d take large, innocent gulps only to be shocked with the amount of alcohol that sat at the bottom. He hadn’t even noticed he’d been pacing as he did so, Philly’s voice tugging him out of his daydream causing him to jump somewhat - attempting to find her, for a few seconds, before looking up with a stunned gaze, “Oh - Phil, what’re... you doing? Here,” Standing onto his tiptoes, Gunner tried his best to hold out his cup towards Philly so that she could take a sip, “There’s whiskey in it. I don’t think it’s too strong or anything, though. Do you want help getting down?” Gunner had already been trying to use the statue as leverage to reach her better, beginning to chuckle at the scenario. If anyone were to get stuck inside of an eight foot tall dinosaur sculpture, it’d be Philly, “I could leave you alone, though, if you’re having a grand ol’ time. Don’t think security would like it if they caught you, though.”

If Gunner felt uncomfortable in the Margaret Keane room, he didn’t show it. His expression could even be described as languid, lazy smile on his face as he snapped a quick picture of a girl slapping at one of the eyes multiple times in a row, “Hey, finally!” he huffed, no real heat in his tone when he noticed Elias. Time felt like a useless concept in the room they currently resided in - he could’ve texted Eli to meet him in there anywhere between five minutes and five hours ago, “The guy running this room went for a break and put me in charge. It’s a very big responsibility, not sure how I feel about it. Wanna make a cameo in his film? I won’t tell him - it’s kinda boring in here otherwise.      though he’s not one to usually keep tabs on people, gunner’s absence had been pretty obvious to him. with no real word about where or what he was doing for the summer, silas had come to the conclusion that if gunner wanted him to know he would’ve told him. so he never asked, even if he wondered.. and quite honestly, even thought he’d missed him. now, though, it seems gunner has reappeared out of thin air, manifesting like some figment of silas’ imagination as he stumbles his way out onto a patio. he blinks twice to try and swipe the drunken haze from his vision, but it does nothing, because clearly gunner is there, even though he’s talking about something as if he’d never gone at all. “ shark attack? well, don’t go swimming. ” silas answers instinctively. “ ask it if my friends are ever gonna tell me where they disappear to. ” it’s teasing –- silas isn’t one for holding a grudge, but he is glad to see that gunner is back. “ glad to see you’ve returned to radcliffe in one piece.” 

There’s somewhat of a relief that washes over him when he realized that it’s Silas that’d found him on his own outside. There’s no stress with their friendship, forced into something closer than anything else Gunner had experienced. He’s grateful for it, if anything - figures that he’d recommend it to everyone, if theirs didn’t start with a life threatening issue, “Good call. I’m not a very good swimmer, anyway. I’ve got the puppy dog paddle down flat, though,” he says seriously, nodding along like they were debating something worry of such tension, “I didn’t tell anyone where I was going,” Gunner insisted, amused grin on his face, though there’s a mild blush that’s paired with it. He’s still unsure, even now, sometimes, even with people he’s closest to, what goes hand in hand with being friends and what doesn’t. But it’s nice, to know that Silas had noticed him gone, that maybe he’d missed him - Gunner’s starting to warm up to it more, the idea that he was made for friendships like this, “Or - I think I did. I didn’t tell anyone when I was leaving, though. Felt a bit pointless if I knew I was gonna be back soon. Though if you were really foaming at the mouth because you missed me so much, I’ll let you know whenever I so much as go to the washroom, Silas. As long as it makes you more comfortable,” he eventually teases back once he’s pulled himself together, “You do anything besides apparently cry over a self made shrine of me this summer?”

All the while, he all but thrusted the pendulum into Miles’ face, like that answered his question at all, “It’s not that bad, I don’t think. You should give it a chance. Ask it a yes or no question,” he practically demanded, insistent and stubborn about it. Miles’ inquiries was reasoning enough for Gunner to finally give him his full attention, corner of his mouth twitching already into something fond but secret, something he couldn’t explain if he tried, “Good. Big. Loud - really loud. Shockingly loud. I thought Lovell was loud after leaving Laramie, but. It’s a lot. You’d like it - no relation. I just... I think everyone would like it, maybe, if I could handle it. But I don’t know. I just could see you there,” he rambled, punctuating his sentence with an unsure shrug, “You get up to anything this summer? I don’t - I mean, you know. I don’t usually have stories. I like hearing yours more.”

A guy from her freshmen calculus had somehow procured a pack of sparklers, one lit for Lana to waft. It was almost as if she’d forgotten her company, dancing around with a grin as she swished out circles and zigzags. Gunner’s voice overrode any excitement, though, no matter how big – she all but flung it when she realised he was there, eliciting a startled exclamation that went ignored as she hurried to the source. “Hey!” she practically barked after bounding steps, lips stretched wide. The first thing she did, once in front of him, was reach out and scrunch fistfuls of shirt fabric, both shoulders – if she had superhuman strength, she’d pick him up and rattle him around, see if any coins fell out. “This – weird, you’re real.” Regardless of confirmation, she didn’t let go. Only kept subtly jiggling him, excitement brought to the boil with the aid of chemical enhancements. “When’d you get back? Kinda sick of you not to even, like, say… I would’ve worn a hat. Pointy, a party – A banner! A sash. Now? Sashay away. The sash-ay is literally a-way. God… Really makes you think. What’d you ask me?” Blinking, Lana studied his face hard. “How’d you use a pendulum? Like, on a grandfather clock? It’s – wait,” she interrupted, tugging him forwards for a hug without any warning, arms enveloped. “Sorry. Had to, Horse Dick. I don’t care if you have a horse dick, it’s been years, there’s, like, basic rules in place, you’re not exempt. I’m just a girl.” Withdrawing to look at him, her grin was so big it’d be spotted from Mars. “I don’t wanna ask anything. Knowing the future’s dumb, I wanna be surprised. Like, if I die tomorrow? Hope it’s spicy. I want a plot twist. Something fun, you know? Something I never see coming. Hit by an asteroid. Devoured by the sun.” Lana barely paused before repeating, forgetting she’d already asked. “When’d you get back?”

He’d been grinning, more than pleased with the time on his own as it was, but Lana’s excitement caused the smile to spread. Gunner had missed Lana an embarrassing amount - he was sure that if he explained just how much to her, she’d never let him live it down. But she had to know, somewhat. On bored nights, it’d usually be Lana he’d FaceTime, summer spent with her and Dom over the phone just as much as with anyone in his internship in person, “Are you gonna rip my shirt clean off me? It’s new, so that’d suck. Whatcha think?” he asked, attempting to balance himself on the creaky edge of the patio banner, arms held out to proudly show it off. It wasn’t that crazy, a simple red and white striped t-shirt, but the fact that it actually fit, not some hideously out of shape thrift store garment was enough of an improvement in his eyes, “I was supposed to get back yesterday. I was gonna make it a whole thing, planned on surprising you at your apartment. My train ended up getting cancelled, though. My theory was that the conductor had a steamy affair with one of the stewardesses and they ended up being fired on the spot - caught in the act, y’know? So they were behind, didn’t have anyone eligible to take us home. I would’ve tried, if they’d asked me,” Her hug was so short lived, you’d have missed it if you blinked. It made Gunner roll his eyes - hypocritically, at that. She’d probably been conditioned by his utter lack of enjoyment towards any sort of affection, but he had moments like this, reserved for exceptions. Like she’d grabbed fistfuls of his shirt, he reached forward to do the same, right below the neck line and drag her in closer, wrapping his arms around her after in a more acceptable hug, “Maybe don’t call me Horse Dick when I’m trying to hug you,” he requested, smiling in amusement anyway, releasing her almost forcefully after he’d held her for as long as he could without a blush forming on his cheeks, squeamish still in the face of a friendship with no ulterior motives, “Hit by an asteroid. Dinosaur style. Does that make you a furry? Dinosaurs are animals, aren’t they?” At her disinterest, Gunner folded up the pendulum, shoving it carelessly into the pocket of his jeans, “You already asked,” he pointed out as he did so, “You’d definitely fail at a pop quiz based all around me. Will you do a shot with me? It’s been a really long time, and I don’t think I like anyone else here. If you can handle one - you seem a bit, uh, fucked up.”

he’s also ‘dealing’ rn which is frankly funny to think abt bc this man is abt as threatening as a care bear bt money is tight between him and eli all things considering, and with the amount of meds he’s on, plus incredibly frequent doctor’s visits, needing to pay for extra epi-pens, inhalers, etcs. bills add up so he’s cutting back his meds n selling wht he can spare which is . so unhealthy bt thts life in corporate america baybee!
