April 20, 2024. protests outside the Sde Teiman detention center in israel, where at least 40 Palestinian detainees have been tortured to death in the past six months. Sde Teiman was established shortly after October 7th, as an interrogation site for suspected Hamas members abducted from Gaza. Following new procedures of care that were passed by the israeli health ministry in December 2023, detainees in the facility and handcuffed 24 hours a day as a rule, in violation of israeli law and international law. In the beginning of April, a doctor who visited the Sde Teiman facility wrote an open letter about the conditions he witnessed.

“The Sde Teiman facility is supposed to operate according to the Incarceration of Unlawful Combatants Law amended last December. In the letter, the doctor claims that the facility does not comply with the law's conditions, including the right to medical treatment and equipment in accordance with detainees' medical condition, their right to hygienic conditions and adequate sleeping arrangements that don't endanger their health or harm their dignity. They also have the right to exercise outside for two hours a day.

In his letter, the doctor asserted that detainees don't receive appropriate care, even when they are moved to a hospital: ‘No patient who was referred to a hospital has remained there for more than a few hours. It happens that patients after major operations, such as abdominal surgeries for intestinal resections, are brought back after about an hour of post-op observation during recovery to the Sde Teiman medical facility, which is staffed most of the day by a single doctor, accompanied by a nursing team, some with no more than medic training.’

Toronto city councillors must speak directly with unhoused people before making policy decisions on homelessness, advocates at Toronto city hall said Thursday.

That demand was one of many made by advocates at city hall.

Al, an unhoused person who only gave their first name, said a new group formed in the past year to give unhoused people a voice. That group, the Toronto Underhoused and Homeless Union, represents people who either live outside now or have been homeless before. Al is an executive board member of the group and lived in Allan Gardens in a tent.

"We need councillors to talk to the people who are actually affected by these decisions," Al said.

"We are the people for whom these decisions are life and death. Whatever happens in council, every council member and the mayor goes home to a soft bed and a roof over their heads and gets to sleep soundly. And we do not. We get killed or brutalized or spat on or some horrendous act of violence. And even if it doesn't happen, we're kept awake because we're scared," Al added. [...]

We urge all participating broadcasters, national competitors, finalists, production crews, and viewers to boycott the contest following the refusal of the organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), to ban genocidal Israel. Palestinians call on supporters to launch creative, strategic initiatives that can pressure broadcasters to withdraw, and appeal to all participants to refuse to be complicit in the EBU’s whitewash of apartheid Israel’s genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. Venues and events organisers planning Eurovision screening parties should refuse to do so, and instead hold Apartheid-Free or Genocide-Free alternative Eurovision events, including teach-ins/workshops/panels about Israel’s cynical pinkwashing and artwashing.

BDS has now, as of today (2 Mar), officially called for a boycott of Eurovision 2024, and for organizers to launch initiatives to pressure broadcasters and participating artists to withdraw from the competition.
