Currently thinking about IDW Megatron. I haven’t read all of the comics but I’ve heard that the end of his arc is a trial that doesn’t tell you what his sentence is— prison or execution— but his arc is beyond amazing. They take this criminal, this violent warlord, and they make him face his crimes and make him a person to you. Everything he did to harm the universe gets kinda shunted to the side in your head because look, he’s got such a fun relationship with the other characters on the Lost Light. It’s funny to watch him interact with idiots and to get involved in their shenanigans. He’s become such a good guy!
Then they hit you with everything he’s done. Transformers lore is beyond complicated and difficult to explain but there’s a planet where the Cybertronian grim reaper lives and there’s a statue for every Cybertronian who has ever lived. Around each statue, there are flowers made of residual spark energy— I believe each flower takes ten or so sparks to make. These flowers represent every life that has ended by the hand or order of that Cybertronian. The crew of the Lost Light visit this planet.
This is Megatron’s statue.
Tumblr media
You’re faced dramatically with the full impact of what he’s done, how many Cybertronians he’s killed— I don’t know for sure if this includes other beings in the kill count, but this alone… is daunting. He feels remorse, but is that enough? Can any one person make that decision? Do you, the reader, have any right to decide that someone this covered in the blood of his victims can live or die?
They heal him and what hurts most of all is that you can’t decide even after everything he’s done and everything he’s done to redeem himself. He proves over and over again that he’s changed, but where is the point where your sins are beyond true redemption? Is there such a point? Does he have the right to live and enjoy being the better person he’s become after so many have died at his hand?
You don’t want him to die, but you can’t justify him living once he finally faces judgment. You can’t be the hand that either deals justice or withholds it, and evidently the writers decided they can’t be either, because this is the end of his arc
Tumblr media
IDW Megatron is such a wonderfully complex character, and even though it was a huge undertaking to read up to where I did (my ass did NOT finish those comics lmao), it’s been four years and I’m still shaken over how he was written. God

the xina and miguel reunion does not stop being baffling because it is just... ridiculous on every single level. miguel put xina through the worst heartbreak of her life and a year later he walks into her apartment while she's not home. it looks like it always has. goes directly into her bedroom and picks up at the framed photo at her bedside (does she just ... look at it every night?) he does some mild nostalgia-induced property damage and joins her on the balcony. she looks like she always has. they sip on some soda. dead, he says, when asked how his sorry excuse of a father is.
they stare deeply into each other's eyes and you can see both their brains shut down. action potentials: zero. synaptic pruning but the shears are wrecking the entire hedge. she finally asks why he showed up. oh yeah, i actually want you to restore the only tether to you i have left. (she's the only thing that listens to me without judgement and i feel safe enough being completely honest with. and it's just an extension of you.)
(letting you go was like losing a limb, could you give me something to replace it, even if it's not the real thing? as long as it's from you. i don't want something new.)
they stare at each other some more. at some point miguel takes off his jacket and is sipping out of a mug like he lives there. he has not seen her in a year. after miguel's life spiralled because he was nonconsensually drugged with wine, and he accepts two drinks—one of which is unsealed—from her without question.
(everyone wants to hurt me. trust you anyway.)
(it's good to see you again.)

miguel's deep and pervasive mental illness never fails to elevate how fun his vanity is. wake up. imagine a noose. imagine not breathing. would be so awesome would be so cool. walk up to the closet. what will it be today, miguel. vintage armani or saint laurent for your long day at work with the boss who groomed-slash-drugged you? no... how about a forest green givenchy blazer. fix his hair. check how clean his shave is. would be so great to be dead right now. deserve nothing. no absolution. the world is so desperately bleak. hate self. hate boss. hate job. finger guns at the mirror. looking handsome as usual, miggy. let's slay the day

there's... something untapped, in the clear erosion of miguel's mental health under the same system that ate away his mother, her subsequent institutionalization, and the looming threat of capture now looming over miguel's head. he and conchata share abusers, and express clear suicidality as a product of years of fear and self-hatred. nueva york is an hypercapitalist society with no short supply of contempt for so-called undesirables—the disabled, the uneducated, the poor, and those in overlapping categories—that tarnish the faux glamour of the city.
at one point, conchata was "one of the good ones": visibly an Other, but smart, and beautiful. tyler calls her connie instead of her actual name. she was promised a better life if she joined the system. she has a mental health crisis and loses the ability to represent herself likely overnight; functionally and legally, her personhood has been taken from her. one generation later, her son is "one of the good ones": visibly an Other, but smart. handsome. useful. tyler calls him mike instead of his actual name.
he almost loses everything overnight when he stops behaving. the result is spider-man, and the knowledge that he will be treated as less than a person if his "condition" is discovered.
what an uncanny coincidence that his mental health also begins to degrade severely, no?

hope is such a major theme in the story of spiderman 2099:
miguel's hope that he can be a better person and be someone he is content being
hope for the people of downtown that they have someone who can fight for them that has power to do so
xina's hope that she can get her best friend back from the place he's been in that's twisted him out of shape and started to turn him into someone she doesn't know anymore
gabriel's hope that being spiderman can steer miguel away from the path he was on working for alchemax
conchata's hope that she can do something to make up for the things she had to do to claw her way out of downtown
miguel's story is one of changing for the better, personal growth, healing traumas and relationships, and the fact its never too late to do any of these things

i've really had xina and miguel's dynamic under a microscope lately; right now my object of scrutiny is xina's use of "kevorkian" in issue #26. it's a quick, tongue-in-cheek comment about miguel's suicidality; kevorkian, at the time of publication, was routinely making headlines for his stance taken and assistance in physician-assisted suicides.
we know early on that xina is, as miguel describes, a "twencen freak," which manifests the most prominently via a love for old pop culture, but it doesn't stop there. she notably talks about alchemax's habit of erasing history, has a lifelike version of a old political figure in her home, and, in this case, brings up a name that's big in bioethics debates.
importantly, she says it very offhandedly, implying that she and miguel have had these discussions before—and i doubt the state is particularly eager to bring up any talk of ethics to their scientists-in-training.
my take on miguel sinking deeper into alchemax's agenda is that while he really doesn't care for the institution itself, he's mistakenly convinced himself that he's chosen the most politically neutral option possible. science is anything but apolitical; it is deeply, irretrievably steeped in concerns about morality. at the time miguel and xina were drifting apart, this wasn't something he wanted to mull over. (after all, once he realizes he's an accessory to state-sanctioned oppression, he wants nothing more than his life to end.)
xina is smart, yes—and i think, knowledgeable, specifically, in ways that directly challenged the delicate mental gymnasium that miguel had started to build for himself. it's not just that xina being more intelligent became a problem. she was also probably (and rightfully) challenging the value of his work, the completeness of his knowledge, and becoming a huge source of cognitive dissonance.
he's the geneticist, but xina, who specializes in an entirely different field, was engaging him in talks about the ethical implications of the work he was doing. trying to get him to think for himself, appealing to the good person she sincerely believes exists in this strange new version of her friend.

miguel looks nothing like george o'hara, but he looks nothing like tyler stone, either. he is the spitting image of his mother. it is hard to tell—they have the same wide, toothy grin, but there's not much opportunity to see their lips curl up in tandem. they have the same strong brow, the same high cheekbones, the same nose—miguel is a stunner, just like conchata was when she was young. miguel will never notice that his eyes used to be exact same shade of deep brown. gabriel has his father's straight hair. if miguel let his hair grow longer, it would start to curl into loose ringlets if the humidity got high.
sometimes, his brother and mother speak in a tongue he does not understand. when they laugh in tandem, their smiles do not look alike.
miguel sees his father in the mirror. his mother sees a carbon copy of herself, and to her, that is nearly as tragic.
tyler, too, can see the woman he broke in miguel, and the opportunity to do it again.

miggy is a really cute nickname for miguel... though it's not one you'd hear from an actual spanish speaker—which, if we ignore the whole "writers likely just didn't do their research" aspect—makes it interesting that the nickname probably came from conchata. a more language-faithful alternative to miggy would have been miki. so, if gabriel recalls her calling his brother miggy during their childhood, this, then, may have been a case of both him and miguel himself misremembering the actual nickname their mother used, as she stopped saying it altogether when they were both quite young.
out of spite—maybe even out of sorrow—she never bothered telling either of them that they're saying it wrong. that's hardly her son anymore, after all. miki doesn't belong to that boy. and miguel still goes around telling people that family and close friends can use miggy. (that's what his mom used to call him when she still loved him.)

really love how completely unintelligible miguel's expressions of familial love are. it's so obvious he pays attention—he remembers all of gabriel's bad dates. he bowed his head low the second he was shipped off to alchemax's school out of fear for his mother and brother if he isn't compliant. he says his mother hates him but does not breathe a word to gabriel that she's struck him. there's frustration, somewhere, that gabriel is their mother's favourite son, but he'll never allude to it if gabriel is around. he only mourns the period that gabriel stopped creating art when he isn't around to hear. don't act like a big brother, he reminds himself. miguel can't seem to bear gabriel telling him he loves him; he can't seem to bear to show gabriel he loves him back in any way his little brother can understand. so miguel is left mouthing to an empty room, i love you, i love you, i love you, while gabriel clings to old memories of a big brother who wasn't afraid to hold him, waiting for that person to come back.
