a blush rose to her cheeks at that statement — affirmation enough that what yumeko said was definitely true . that deep down she was far sweeter than she pretended to be . built up walls around herself to guard against a school that only ever PUNISHED kindness . not that she would outwardly admit that there was still a part of her that cared about others . but it was almost frighteningly easy to let that guard down around yumeko — especially at times like this , when she was smiling && seemed so excited , even for something so simple .
still , she’d roll her eyes — small smirk tugging onto her lips at the other’s near - nonsensical ramblings . it was cute , if she were honest — incredibly endearing , really . && for once , when the other suddenly made a grab for mary’s arm , the blonde was too preoccupied to pull away in time — instead felt the other’s grasp on her arm all at once — the sudden contact surprising her , though her attempt to pull her arm back from yumeko was weak . instead allowed the other to remain latched to her . if asked , would claim it’s because she knew she wouldn’t be able to get the other OFF of her , but in reality there was something almost comforting about the other’s closeness . something nice about human contact . so instead , she’d allow it for the time being — could brush it off as yumeko being yumeko if she was later asked by any classmates . “ it’d be a pretty boring gamble , considering it’s a fact that you’ll get fat if you eat too much cake , right ? thought you weren’t into boring gambles . ” not that she was going to tell yumeko to stop talking — found the sound of her voice sweet when she wasn’t trying to coax a gambling partner into their own DOOM .

❝ YES , I SUPPOSE you’re right ~ the cake isn’t betting anything , so it isn’t even technically a fair gamble ! so sharp , mary ~ ❞ she’s practically swooning , rubbing into the other’s shoulder with her head as if she were a cat trying to show her affection . ( wasn’t even a MITTENS anymore ; never really stopped acting like one , though . ) she was simply over the moon that the other hadn’t shoved her away or yanked her arm back - typical tsundere actions from mary ! yumeko could see right through all of that , to the soft - hearted girl she really was , && what she absolutely adored about mary .
it wasn’t long before the two of them made their way to the exit of the academy , but if anything , yumeko was simply clinging more to the other girl . she had absolutely zero intention of letting go until they were seated to eat !
❝ ALTHOUGH , YOU && I could always gamble to see which of us could eat more ! that would be much more interesting , don’t you think ? if i lose , i’ll pay for all of our food . however , if you lose -- ❞

she didn’t WANT to be involved in yumeko’s ridiculous gambles . not directly . didn’t want the student council chasing her down while she tried to figure out her own plan to take over kirari’s seat as student council president . would so rather lay low than run around risking everything she had by getting involved with yumeko’s insanity . but at the same time , she did care about yumeko herself — wasn’t interested in seeing her fall back to sub - human status so soon . && though she knew yumeko wasn’t suicidal , the very REAL fear that something could happen to her if she pissed off the wrong people remained . besides , she had risked her life before — granted that she wasn’t speaking to midari anymore ( a fact that provided at least some amount of comfort , if mary were honest ) but it remained true that , from how RYOTA described it , she’d been VERY WILLING to join midari’s initial gamble .
she was about to say just that when yumeko continued — took mary by surprise , whether it should have or not . the other girl was asking her to hang out outside of school ? at a sweets shop ? sure , it didn’t seem that out of character — had seen the other girl eating sweets before — but it felt so NORMAL compared to the usual insanity that seemed to make up the other’s daily life at the academy . && along with that shock of normalcy came the realization that this might be her first chance to feel like a NORMAL PERSON since yumeko first came into her life . the latter half of that proposition still made her nervous , of course , but wasn’t this essentially what she’d asked for ? because at least this way if something did happen , she’d be there to at least try to bail yumeko out . so her response was an easy one — offered in a nod . “ yeah , fine . let’s go . not like i’m doing anything else , anyways . ” pushed herself away from the table as she stood , pulling her school bag over her shoulder . glad she’d started working on getting her taxes for next time together already — didn’t dare take a break now . not when she only recently managed to pay off her debts . left her with enough that she shouldn’t have a problem getting sweets , no matter how ridiculously overpriced the place was . not that she’d admit that to yumeko .

OH , mary , you act tough but deep down you’re super sweet , aren’t you ? ❞ said in a rather teasing manner as baby - pink manicured nails are raised to her own lips , a chuckle escaping them . she quickly grabs her schoolbag with one hand , at mary’s side in an instant . she almost resembled an overly eager puppy , grabbing its leash && impatiently wagging its tail at its owners side . ❝ JUST LIKE CAKE ! ooh , it’s been so long since i’ve actually gone to get sweets , what with how much is always happening at the academy ... i wonder how many slices i can eat before i get fat ? probably best not to find out , but i suppose it is a gamble ... ❞
she’s droning on at this point , only interrupting herself by quickly making a grab for mary’s arm . she wants to walk with their arms linked ! it’s totally normal gal pal stuff , really !

right . of course . why would she ever want a full - night's sleep when she could be perpetually worrying about what yumeko had found that was , as she said , ‘ NEW && EXCITING . ’ knew caring about yumeko really was about the equivalent of having a newborn — found herself waking up suddenly in the middle of the night , some inexplicable sixth sense demanding her attention . telling her to check her phone — make sure that yumeko hadn’t called . hadn’t texted . hadn’t turned up DEAD . “ right , because who needs sleep when i can wake up three times a night to make sure you didn’t get yourself poisoned . ”
slumped down just a little further onto the cafeteria table across from yumeko , looked back towards her through sleep - deprived golden eyes — bags under her eyes only partially hidden by makeup . didn’t dare suggest the only real solution ( knew plenty well that yumeko wasn’t going to stop getting herself into trouble or providing a constant source of stress so she wouldn’t even bother considering it . ) that was keeping her even closer . still , lifted her cup of coffee to her lips to take a drink — desperate for anything that might fight off her eternal weariness . “ it’s like the only way to make sure you’re not about to get yourself KILLED is to watch you twenty - four seven . ” tone filled with annoyance , though lacking any real venom . though whether she was too tired to be bothered or genuinely wasn’t angry could be left up for debate . “ you seriously ARE like an infant . like , at least text me if you decide you’re gonna go out in the middle of the night && gamble . ”

g’morning ! while i will be playing a good bit of all stars today , i will be doing things here as well on dear yumeko ! i hope everyone is having a good morning <3
also , starting tomorrow i will be working at a haunted house 5pm to midnight several days a week so activity will be a bit slower than usual !! once i actually go in n talk to them to get my schedule solidified i’ll let u guys know
