Red-Leg Zeff wakes up to surprising visitors.
You can read Part 1 here! Original AO3 link
Tumblr media
Days on the open ocean were long and monotonous.  It was a decent struggle to keep track of the sunrises and sunsets, but Red-Leg Zeff had developed a system, very recently at that.
Next to a parchment letter and three photographs he nailed to the wall of his captain’s quarters, he tacked up a separate piece of paper and made a tally mark for each day that passed since he received the small parcel.  Each day that went by was another day of inwardly hoping to see the image of the Thousand Sunny off the deck of the Baratie.  It was wishful thinking, and Zeff was a level-headed man, not one for futile hopes or daydreaming, but could you blame him?  He had a grandchild and a daughter-in-law, all things considered, anyway.
The three photographs that Sanji had sent in the package were what greeted him every time he awoke, and were the last images he saw behind his eyelids as he shut in for sleep.  As the days turned into weeks, and then months, and now well over a year according to his tallies, and as Zeff’s braided facial hair continued to slowly turn gray at the roots, the pictures stayed the same.
Like clockwork, Zeff rose from his stiff mattress before the sun rose in the morning, stretching his aging muscles and groaning.  He gazed off across the room at the photos hung on his wall.
“Good morning, Sa–”
“CAPTAIN ZEFF, YOU’RE NEEDED ON THE BOW.”
Patty’s booming voice outside the thin wooden door sent a startled shockwave through Zeff.  He jumped and yelped at the commotion.  Followed by the command, a pounding on the door caused the blonde man to grumble and stomp across his small cabin towards the noise.  He swung open the door, right before Patty threw his fist into the wood for the hundredth time.
“What in the fresh hell do you want?  You’re gonna wake up the whole crew, you oaf.”  Zeff rubbed two calloused fingertips against the bridge of his wrinkled nose.
Eagerly, with a light in his eyes, Patty waved a hand in the direction of the ship’s bow.  “There’s a large vessel spotted approaching from northwest, about ten miles away.  It looks like a pirate ship but we couldn’t make out the image on the sail.”
Zeff stepped into his one boot and rolled up his pants around his peg-leg, making it easier for him to walk.  He firmly gripped his chef’s cap in his hand as he marched past Patty and closed his door behind the two of them, leading him out to the front of the Baratie.  It took them a few moments to roam down the flights of stairs to the lower deck and dining hall, and upon opening the large double doors to the outer deck, he spotted his kitchen crew huddled around Carne, who firmly gripped a pair of binoculars in his large hands.
“What are you all doing?” Zeff’s voice boomed over the hushed whispers of the kitchen staff, who quickly turned their heads to address their captain.  He pushed past the men and placed a firm hand on Carne’s shoulder, yanking him back slightly and grabbing the binoculars out of his hands, holding them up to his own eyes.
“It’s definitely a pirate ship, Captain, but my eyes are shot,” Carne eagerly noted.  Zeff merely grumbled in response.
It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the binocular lenses, but when they did he managed to make out a fairly clear picture of a ship in the distance, now well less than ten miles away and approaching quite rapidly.  Definitely a large pirate ship.  It had a very odd looking nautical figurehead, almost like a sunflower he assumed, but his heart leaped into his throat when his blurry eyes focused on the primary sail which flowed outward, fully unraveled and pushing the vessel towards the Baratie.
A simple Jolly Roger, a rudimentary skull and crossbones design, with a peculiar red-banded straw hat placed on the head of the skull.
“Should we man the–” Patty began to ask, before being cut off by Zeff.
“It’s the Straw Hats.  Prepare the mooring ropes and fenders, they’re going to tie up to us.”  Zeff shoved the binoculars back into the chest and hands of Carne, who once again put them to his face and gazed at the sail of the ship.  The rest of the kitchen staff ran to awaken the boat crew and make the necessary preparations for a vessel connection.
“Sanji?” Patty simply asked, with sudden wonder in his voice.
“Hopefully,” Carne responded, passing the binoculars to his coworker.  “It’s definitely them.  Look at their Jolly Roger.”
Zeff had turned his back to his two right-hand men to help the others prepare the baratie’s starboard side for the tie-up.  Crew men, freshly shaken awake from their slumbers, bustled around the lower deck tossing heavy, tightly coiled ropes to each other, tying them around the deck’s bollards and laying them down to make them easier to access when the Thousand Sunny would pull up alongside.  Zeff quickly found that there wasn’t much for him to do, the sight of his crew excitedly scurrying around as the news of the Straw Hats’ return to the Baratie spread like wildfire from the mouths of the men bringing a fond smile to the old man’s face.
Now within enough distance to the Straw Hats’ ship that they could hear the excited yelling of their captain perched cross-legged on the top of the figurehead, waving his hand in the air.  A few of the other crew members leaned over the side of the ship, excitedly waving to the Baratie crew.  Once close enough, a large, strangely built blue-haired man launched a heavy rope from the deck of the Sunny downwards towards the Baratie’s crew, who grabbed it and began to pull it taught.  An orange-haired woman (Zeff thought she looked familiar) instructed the sails to be furled while the larger men of the ship helped the Baratie’s sailors moor the two vessels together.  A few stragglers from the floating restaurants crew looked through their portholes at the commotion.  Carne and Patty assisted the blue-haired man (were his arms made of metal?) in raising a gangway for the Straw Hats to board the Baratie, but their captain, still donned in the same straw hat that he wore when they first visited the luxury cruiser, wasted no time in launching himself off of the figurehead and landing with a hard thud on the wooden deck.
“Hey, Geezer!”  His smile almost covered his entire face.  “Do you have any food?”
“Luffy, seriously?  Can you not wait a single minute?”
A familiar voice caused Zeff to turn his head.  Through the hustle of the crews finishing their mooring duties, a head of bright blonde hair and a thin trail of gray smoke met the old chef’s view.  He immediately broke out into a fond smile.  Sanji was leaning precariously over the side of the Sunny, any more and he would tip over the side, a large grin on his face.  Next to him was a young woman, a bit shorter than him, with a steady hand placed on his shoulder ensuring that he didn’t fall overboard.  She gazed down at Zeff, and her face broke into a grin just as large as Sanji’s.
He recognized her as the woman in the photographs.  She was just as beautiful in person.
The gangway was successfully tied, joining the two boats together, and the two first mates excitedly welcomed the Straw Hats aboard the Baratie.  The four who had already visited almost five years prior marveled at the impressive renovations done to the vessel.  New decks, refurbished dining and lounging, impressive paintwork on the outer hull.  The same blue-haired man from before (his arms were made of metal!) was starstruck by the craftsmanship of the restaurant and immediately began asking questions to a few of the crewmen.  A green-haired man with three swords on his hip and a shorter man with curly black hair greeted Carne and Patty with excitement, remembering the two of them from their first visit.  The two women from the Straw Hats, with tangerine and black hair, quickly exited the gangway and joined their companions.  Zeff watched curiously as a skeleton donned in formalwear hauled himself over the side of the Sunny, followed by a fishman.  The Straw Hats were a very curious bunch, but he was filled with a giddy, child-like joy at the sight of them all, healthy, fit, and just as excited as his own crew was for the surprise reunion.
Sanji and his wife disappeared from the side of the Sunny, but quickly reappeared.  Sanji was the first to step onto the gangway before turning around and taking something from his wife, who swiftly followed his lead.  She looked like a natural on the water, and Zeff hummed, pleased.  Sanji turned around to march down the ramp, a child held in his arms, tightly gripping his shirt in her fist.  The two were the last to disembark, and immediately headed toward the Baratie's captain, who stood in mild shock as the three approached.
Sanji passed the child back to his wife so he could greet Zeff with a handshake, but he was beaten by the captain’s speed as he enveloped the smaller man in a bear hug, almost lifting him off his feet.
“Sanji,” he muttered, voice quivering.  “You look incredible.”
“Hey, no crying on me now, Zeff,” Sanji returned the gesture in kind, squeezing his adopted father back and jostling the hat on the older man’s head.
The two released their warm embrace, and Sanji held out a hand towards his wife and the child in her arms.  The woman stepped forward with a warm smile.
“Red-Leg Zeff, it’s an honor to finally meet you!” she said with profound enthusiasm before introducing herself.  “Sanji’s been talking nonstop about this visit and how excited he’s been to see you again!”
Sanji flushed, embarrassed, but Zeff could only muster a hardy laugh.  He remembered Sanji as a stubborn, hard-to-crack kid, endlessly determined and stopping at nothing to get his way, and the man who stood before him was all of that and more.  He was gazing tenderly at his wife, cheeks rosy with embarrassment and adoration, a smile adorning his thin lips.  Zeff was beyond proud of the man Sanji had become.
“So, who’s this little one?” he asked, cautiously approaching the child in the woman’s arms.  His heart fluttered at the sight of her.
She had wavy, strawberry blonde hair and her dad’s ocean-blue eyes.  A mixture of her mom and dad’s skin tone, and she was clearly developing Sanji’s facial features.  The right corners of her eyebrows had a very slight upward curl.  She was beautiful, and her large eyes gazed curiously at Zeff as he approached.
“Sora, this is your grandfather,” the woman said affectionately.  “Say hi!”  She bounced the baby on her hip.
When she came to the infantile conclusion that Zeff was indeed not a threat, her chubby cheeks wrinkled with a smile revealing a few barely there baby teeth.  Zeff held out one of his thick, calloused fingers, and she eagerly reached for the man.  Sanji’s wife passed the baby, Sora, over to him, and he held her like a delicate porcelain pot, like she could break at any moment.  Sanji watched the action fondly.
“Her name is Sora, she’s almost two now,” he said, his voice light and airy, almost a whisper.
Zeff bounced Sora, his granddaughter, in his arms, and she released a shrill giggle which brought a smile to his face.  “Sora…”  He knew that was Sanji’s late mother’s name.  It seemed only natural that his daughter would take the honor of bearing her name.  “She’s beautiful,” he sighed, looking at his son and daughter-in-law.
Sanji looked like he was fighting back tears at the sight of his honorary father holding his daughter.  His wife gently squeezed his hand, and the floodgates leaked, making her chuckle.
“He’s been a bit nervous,” she said toward Zeff.
The gruff captain stepped toward his son and ruffled his smooth blonde hair in his free hand.  Sanji sniffled, picking his head up and wiping his eyes on his sleeve.  His shoulders trembled slightly with the motion of his repressed crying, but he quickly shoved it down and locked eyes with the fatherly ones staring at him.  Zeff didn’t need to ask any questions to know how much a moment like this meant to Sanji.  A child so wronged by his family and the world, growing up with no purpose, no encouragement, losing the one source of love in his life, forced to age so rapidly to survive some of the worst experiences a human should ever have to face.  To have been blessed with a crew that cared for him, fulfilling his dreams, practicing his passion, meeting one special woman who loved and supported him, and being the father of his own child, Sanji was finally content.  He was finally happy, finally content.
Zeff’s voice cracked as he uttered the sentence that he knew would make Sanji crumble.  “I’m so proud of you, son.  Look at how far you’ve come.”
Sanji’s blue eyes welled with tears that he had been holding in since his own childhood.  The commotion from the rest of the two crews faded into a muffled static as Zeff pulled Sanji’s head into his chest, holding him close.  Sora’s hand lightly smacked the top of Sanji’s hair, making him laugh, but it came out as a crackled sob.  His wife laughed, rubbing his back.
“I didn’t want to cry,” he uttered into Zeff’s chest, voice blank with slight resentment.
“It was inevitable,” you responded with a humorous lilt.
“I know.”  He easily relented to your words, picking his head up from Zeff and placing a hand on his father’s shoulder, giving it a firm smack.  “Sorry for getting your shirt all wet, old man.”
Zeff’s chest bounced with the force of his laughter.  “You’re gonna pay for it, kid.  You’re on dish duty.”
Sanji’s mouth fell open in a panicked retaliation, but after realizing Zeff was, in fact, joking around, his tense shoulders fell in relief.  Sora reached back out toward her mom, who took her from Zeff’s grasp leaving both his hands free again.  He was able to deliver a quick, encouraging slap on Sanji’s back.
“I do expect you to help prepare this feast, though.  Show me how much you’ve improved since you left.”  He winked at his son.  “Though, I doubt you improved that much.”
“Shut up, old man!  I’ll make you the best feast you’ve ever laid eyes on.  A feast that could kill you!”  Old habits die hard, and the family meandered towards the rest of the crew, who were now milling around the lower dining hall excited for a meal to celebrate the Straw Hats’ return, and Zeff’s new granddaughter.
Zeff clapped his hands, alerting his own crew, who frantically took their places around the ship to cater to their pirate guests.  He quickly made his way into his kitchen, rustling through the main pantry for a piece of equipment he hadn’t needed to use in a very long time.  He pulled out a small food processing machine, equipped with an internal blade perfect for mashing fruits and small vegetables.
“Captain, do you need anything?” Patty was rolling up his sleeves and washing his hands in the large wash basin.
“All the fresh fruit we have.  The kid doesn’t have teeth yet, she needs some mush.”

Quickies Headcanons (NSFW):
ꕥMonster Trio + Ace & Lawꕥ
Tumblr media
Luffy:
Luffy navigates sex with you as he does all things in life--it’s meant to be fun, fast, and exhilarating.
Quickies with The Strawhat Captain fill the very same mold-- getting you to finish is like a game to him; continuously testing himself to see if he can get you there faster and more intensely than the time prior.
You’ll often find yourself in rather risky locations, atop the crow’s nest of The Thousand Sunny, legs wrapped around his waist as he pummels his length into you; he doesn’t care if you’re caught, he’d much rather own up to it than deny himself pleasure. Giggles erupt from his rubber throat as he chases his orgasm like a predator does its prey. He’s Luffy, of course, unapologetically confident and determined, rubbing rough circles into your swollen clit as his pulsing cock abuses your tight walls. You’re shaking beneath him, begging for release, but he remains, like he always does, giggling above you, a wide grin spread across his face,
“Havin’ fun, aren't ‘cha, baby?”
Tumblr media
Zoro:
Zoro’s pretty indifferent when it comes to quickies; he can take them or leave them. However, if you even start to tease him, of course, he’ll give in. Zoro can toss you over his shoulder like a ragdoll, and he does so often, his palm meeting the flesh of your ass with a loud smack as he carries you off to a secluded closet on The Sunny to teach you a good lesson. His pace is brutal and unwavering as he fucks you, pressed against the wall, your legs around his waist as he holds you up, your nails digging down the muscular flesh of his back. You’re a whimpering mess, tears falling on your fucked-out face as he rails you, pleasure building in your core and threatening to snap at any moment.
He’s grunting in your ear, a smug smirk plastered across his face,
“This is what you wanted, huh?”
Tumblr media
Sanji:
Sanji prefers to worship you rather than engage in quickies.
However, he’s still Sanji, a love drunk idiot who will pounce on any chance he gets to please you. For him, experiences like these are merely more opportunities to pleasure you, and who would he be to deny you that?
His devotion is evident as he’s got you bent over the kitchen counter, chest pressed against your back as he fucks you kindly. His pace is slow, loving and tender; his long, slender cock kissing your sweet spot with each thrust. He’s moaning beautifully in your ear, his gifted hands traveling down your goosebump-riddled skin to pay his respects to every inch of you. He picks up the pace, reaching around to treat your clit with gentle circles, his fingertips working diligently as he whispers sweet praises into your ear,
“So good for me, mon amour.”
Tumblr media
Ace:
Ace is completely unashamed of his love for quickies; confident in his abilities, he has no need for foreplay and drawn-out makeout sessions to get you off.
Ace always lets his desires take the reigns; if he wants you now, he’ll get you now.
His sex drive is high and his stamina is unwavering, so it isn’t uncommon for him to be urgently rearranging your guts multiple times a day. He’ll even take you outdoors, up against a tree, your bare chest flush with the bark as he stands behind you, gripping your hips tightly in his strong, hot hands, bouncing you up and down on his length. He’ll take quick opportunities to plant a smack on your ass, kneading the flesh in his hands, nearly clawing at your skin, begging for more. His handsome, freckled face is flushed and hot as he fucks you hard, chasing his peak, longing to release his seed into you.
“Such a needy little thing,” he’ll groan in your ear, knowing damn well he’s the desperate culprit who pushed you against the timber.
Tumblr media
Law:
Law doesn’t prefer quickies. He’d much rather take his time loving you; starting slow and gentle and ending needy and harsh. However, this workaholic of a man is often unknowingly neglectful; which, in turn, makes you resort to rather rash decisions. You have to go about your methods carefully, as not to make him suspect your motives.
Your semi-revealing clothing and well-timed touches have landed you right where you planned; bouncing on Law’s cock while he sits at his desk chair, inked fingers gripping your waist tightly, forcing you up and down.
His desk is uncharacteristically messy, papers and pens scattered everywhere, the piece of furniture slightly teetering with each movement of your bodies. You feel heat growing in your core as the tip of Law’s cock continues to bully your cervix, legs shaking as you straddle him, arms wrapped around his neck as he places messy, wet kisses on your pretty tits.
He’s a groaning mess, looking up at you with a knowing smirk,
“Got me right where you wanted me, huh?”

Sanji would probably be the best boyfriend he’s so kind and sweet
I AGREE! His chivalry shows no sign of stopping as a boyfriend. When he falls for someone, he falls hard. His entire being belongs to you. Sanji would put your needs ahead of his own and he would be constantly treating you with the utmost courtesy. His life goal is to ensure your happiness, whether that be sacrificing his own comfort for yours or going above and beyond to fulfill your wishes.
Every action, every word, every gesture is just filled with complete and utter affection and adoration for you. From the moment he wakes up to the moment he falls asleep, you are the primary thing on his mind, and he always seems to find new ways to show you just how much you mean to him.
I can just picture a lazy morning, and as you stir awake, you smell the scent of your favorite breakfast filling the room. You would be greeted with Sanji bringing you a tray of those foods you smelled earlier. He would set the tray on your lap with excitement in his eyes as he watches you take in the sight. “Breakfast in bed for you, mon amour.” he would say, his voice brimming with affection as he places a chaste kiss on your lips.
And he would do this every morning. Greet you with your favorite breakfast, a kiss, and promise that the day ahead is going to be filled with just as much love for you as the days prior. If you happen to snatch up Sanji as your boyfriend, expect to be treated like absolute royalty every waking moment with him

Would they kill the spider for you? - Sanji, Law, Doflamingo, Shanks, Corazon
Tumblr media
Content: spiders!! (no images!)
Sanji
Since he also hates bugs, this would be a struggle for him. Of course he wants to do it for you, but he gets the shivers when he sees bugs!
Usually when he finds a bug in the kitchen, he’ll ask Robin or Luffy to get it out of there, trying to play it off like he’s worried about it crawling into the food
Robin knows what’s up, though
He would probably end up calling Zoro in and baiting him with insults into making him slice the spider in half. Like, “bet you can’t even slice that itty-bitty spider over there with those shitty swords of yours”
Zoro falls for it all the time, much to your and Sanji’s delight
Law
You would think so, right? Surely this guy isn’t afraid of a little bug. Right?
WRONG
Law’s eye twitches and he just watches the damn thing run around the wall
He finds bugs and especially spiders gross, even having to hold back a gag as he watches them scurry around with their little legs. UGH
He always tries to avoid bugs when he can, but the sub is a warm, damp place and sometimes they just manage to get in
He will use his Devil Fruit to get it out of the submarine, though. The poor spider will end up drowning and now you have to clean up wet seaweed off the floor, but that’s probably better than a spider, right?
Doflamingo
Fuck no!
Doflamingo isn’t scared of bugs one bit. But he’s a prissy little bitch, and he’d complain about having to touch anything that seemed ‘dirty’.
Absolutely makes someone else get rid of it for you, as he would for himself as well
He also pokes fun at you for even asking him to do that for you, even though he probably would order you to get rid of a bug for him if the situation arose
Doffy was the type to burn ants with a magnifying glass, the prick
He lives for destruction, so I can just see him kicking over the anthills every time, too
Probably crushed a butterfly once! Cora cried
Shanks
No, he would not kill the spider for you. He would pick it up and either toss it over the ship, or place it somewhere else, out of the way, while talking gently to it, like “Poor little thing, Y/N how could you ask me to murder a little creature?”
He’s only doing it to piss you off, because he’ll come right back to you and reaches for your face to touch you with his just-touched-a-bug hand
Even if you swat and scream at him, he’ll try to get his grimy little fingers on you somehow. You’d have to hide from him out of reach if he’s in that kind of mischievous mood
He thinks it’s hilarious how much you avoid bugs, while he is just used to insects of all kinds by now. Being a pirate wasn’t exactly luxurious living
The guy probably has some spider webs under his damn bed. Maybe that’s where they keep coming from
If you catch him while he’s drunk, he’ll pick it up and chase you around the goddamn ship with it
Corazon
Cora is another type who would not kill it, but he would move it somewhere else
He is a gentle soul, and he’d tell you how it’s more afraid of you than you are of it
He finds the nicest spot to put it in, and he walks like all slow-motion because he knows how clumsy he is and doesn’t want to squish it by accident
He’d place it in grass if possible, or anywhere that it wouldn’t get stepped on by accident
I don’t believe he would be gutsy enough to actually touch the spider- it’s more of an aversion than a fear, but he would scoop it into a cup or something he had on hand
He is clumsy enough to step on the bugs if he’s just walking in, though. You’d have to make sure he doesn’t see it’s dead, squashed body, because he would cry

sanji knows exactly what you've been hiding in your drawer.
he had found it a while ago, buried under a pile of clothes while he was snatching a pair of your panties during a time when you were busy sunbathing with nami. after shielding his nose to prevent blood from dripping all over your things, he found himself holding it, examining it closely, running his fingers along the ribbed edges. he's seen enough depravity in filthy magazines to know it's called a rabbit, and yours is an expensive one at that.
as his tongue ran along the grooves of the shaft, he only picks up notes of gentle soap, wondering just how long you've been left wanting. seemingly it must be a long time if you've resorted to the sinful company of this thing. and though he'd probably cream his pants if he saw you splayed out as you fuck yourself with your toy, he has a base urge to interrupt you, to show you that he can do it better.
and so, during moments that nami and robin are otherwise preoccupied without you, he finds himself lingering outside the door to your shared room, hoping to catch you in the act; a simple soft moan reverberating through the door would satiate his craving, but he never hears a peep from you—until today.
the sound is so small that his ears barely pick it up, but sanji knows exactly what you're doing when he hears it; for a moment he contemplates holding back and exhibiting some restraint, but his filthy, more perverted urges have him reaching for the doorknob, making up some lame excuse as he opens the door.
"sorry dear—" he sputters out, holding a handkerchief to his nose as he mentally screams at himself to keep his composure, "—i wanted to ask what you wanted for dinner." he says, though the way he shuts and locks the door doesn't go unnoticed by you. frozen in place as you stare wide-eyed at him, you swallow hard and inhale sharply.
"n-no you didn't, you creep!" you spit out nervously; you meant for your reply to be teasing, but it comes out harsh as your toy continues to whir. flinching at your words, sanji takes a shaky sigh and reluctantly turns towards the door; however, you stop him before he can twist the lock. "wait—aren't you gonna help me?" you squeak out, causing sanji to turn on his heels and approach you faster in less than a blink of an eye.
"say it again for me, darling." he whispers as he takes your chin between two of his fingers gingerly, kicking off his shoes as he climbs on top of you.
"help me, sanji, please—" you whine, but your plea gets muffled by his lips as his hands begin to roam, moaning with satisfaction into your mouth as a drop of blood drips onto your cheek.

Looks Like Lingerie to Me - Sanji x Reader
Tumblr media
Word count: 854
We gender-neutral and short af today boys. This is crack treated semi-seriously lmao, and an actual drabble. I love idiot!readers, there isn't enough rep for us dumbasses. This is written with OPLA!Sanji in mind bc I dig the super effective suave vibe
Suggestive, there's swearing, the word cock is used once. Brief description. (Ha! Brief!)
Let's be real...Sanji might wears shirt stays....and that's hot as fuck
It was midday when you found yourself outside the men's quarters. You had been lounging around on the upper deck when Usopp had asked you to grab a wrench he'd left in his room. Fair enough, you weren't doing anything, wouldn't hurt to help. And so you padded off, making your way to the bedroom. It was the middle of the day, no one should be in there. You'd passed Zoro napping against some bags, you could still hear Luffy. Sanji definitely had to be in his domain of the kitchen. Still, you offered a quick courteous knock as you flung open the door to the men's quarters, wandering into the space with no preamble.
"Sorry boys, I gotta grab Usopp's- Holy shit!"
Sanji's head shot up to stare at you, cheeks lightly pink. He was stooped over, pants pooling at his knees. Sure, his thick thighs were enticing, and his position stuck that gorgeous ass out at a delicious angle, but your eyes were fixated on the crossing fabric that adorned his upper legs. Was that…a garter belt? You felt lightheaded at the view before you. He looked delectable. The cook quirked an eyebrow at your staring.
"See something you like, love?" He drawled, sending you a cocky grin. Sanji felt his ego swell when you tripped over your words. Had you actually paid attention, you'd notice how his usual clothes were covered in flour, but you weren't exactly the most perceptive.
"I…thighs." You spoke dumbly, causing you to mentally smack yourself. "I mean, sorry. I didn't think anyone would be in here at this time."
With great hardship, you tore your eyes away from the garment. It looked like a garter belt, had to be! You always knew Sanji liked fashion, and that he could be a pervert, but you didn't expect him to be unembarrassed at being caught wearing lingerie. As if they were possessed, your eyes trailed their way back to his thighs. The elastic was biting into his thigh meat, bulk deliciously spilling over the edges. Saliva flooded your mouth. What you wouldn't give to touch them. To bite them. Fuck what if you-
Wait.
Sanji had said something.
"Wha?"
Nice going idiot.
Sanji had abandoned his grip on the trousers, gracefully dropping them and stepping out of the puddle of fabric. Your breath hitched as he turned to you.
Abort mission!
Fuck you didn't even look at his underwear. Shit, fuck, that…that was clearly the outline of his cock, a pair of grey boxer briefs doing a horrible job at hiding his silhouette. You were thankful that the length of his dress shirt covered the majority, or you'd be due a visit to chopper from fainting.
"I said can I help you, love?"
An awkward cackle escaped your throat and you blushed. Oh, he could help you alright. Instead, you opened your dumb mouth again.
"Is that…why are you wearing a garter belt?"
Sanji froze. An uncomfortable silence filled the room.
Oh shit! Oh fuck!
You opened your mouth to apologise when that bell-like laugh permeated the awkwardness.
"What?" He laughed incredulously. "They are shirt stays."
Sanji felt his heart squeeze when you cocked your head confused. You really had no idea how cute you were, did you? Trying to be polite and stop laughing, he coughed into his fist.
"They keep my shirt tucked in sweet thing. Can't be looking unprofessional around you cuties." Sanji winked, smirking with satisfaction as your face grew redder. He expected an 'oh' or a 'sorry'. He certainly didn't expect a;
"I'd call having no pants but lingerie on unprofessional."
"You were the one who bust in here!" He argued. "And it's not lingerie!"
"Ah…sorry about that. I meant to grab a wrench Usopp left in here. I…uh…I should go."
"Mmhmm."
You wandered stiffly to where Usopp slept, finding the tool with ease, and trying desperately to not look at the cook. Sanji watched you, amusement clear on his face at your robotic movements. Wasting no time, you rushed back to the door.
"Oh, uh, Sanji?" The man hummed in response. "I, uh, I'm sorry for thinking you were wearing lingerie. Not! Not that there's anything wrong if you were, you'd look hot in it. I mean! I….uh…no, you'd definitely look hot in it. What was I saying?"
Silence. Sanji was staring at you with wide eyes, face now red from your comments. You clicked your fingers.
"Right, right! You should probably put some clothes on. Don't want you catching a cold ha ha." You forced out a robotic laugh. "Sorry again."
You slammed the door shut, leaving a confused and slightly aroused man in your wake. Sanji sighed, making his way back to his sleeping area to change into clean clothes. The door creaked back open. Sanji groaned quietly. Who now?
"You have to admit, they are kinda slutty though, right? Sorry! Bye again!"
You were gone before Sanji could even process your words properly. He groaned audibly this time, raking his hands down his face. He needed a fucking smoke. You were going to be the death of him.

“Reading that garbage again?” a voice called out.
At hearing the question, you glanced up from your well-worn copy of Pride and Prejudice, your favorite book, only to see a calm Zoro casually stroll over to you with a hint of amusement on his face.
You playfully rolled your eyes. “Don’t knock it till you try it, oh great sword master,” you playfully jabbed as you shook out the book to him as he leaned his back against the ship’s front railing, resting his elbows on top of it. “The almighty Zoro isn’t allergic to reading, is he?”
Zoro snorted, glancing down at your cross-legged position on top of a crate before returning his sights to the Going Merry’s deck and the open ocean. “Yeah, I am allergic,” he agreed. “Allergic to reading that monstrosity you call a book.”
“Ooo, ‘monstrosity’. That’s a mighty big word for a non-reader like yourself, Zoro. Good job,” you teased as you marked your page before closing the book and joining your friend in looking across the deck and out towards the ocean.
The green-haired swordsman crossed his arms. “I read.”
“Mmhm,” you hummed, not convinced. “Sure you do.”
“I do,” he defended in a gruff voice.
“Oh yeah? Here, I’ll make it easy for you: tell me about one book you’ve read.”
Zoro scoffed. “I can tell you about way more than one.”
You couldn’t help the surprised noise that came out of you. “Oh, yeah? ’More than one’?” you asked with a raised brow and glanced up at your fellow straw hat, trying to wipe off the grin on your face.
You were certainly surprised that Zoro has read more than one book in his lifetime, but you weren’t surprised that he took your earlier question as a challenge. Classic Zoro, you thought in amusement. The guy could never pass up a challenge, no matter what it was about.
So, you repositioned yourself on your crate, making yourself comfortable for the discussion ahead. “Alright, come on,” you said and sat up straighter, urging Zoro on, “let’s hear it. Tell me all about them.”
From the back of the ship, on the upper deck above the kitchen, a certain chef took a long drag on his cigarette as he watched you and his least favorite swordsman be engrossed in conversation. Sanji removed the butt of his cigarette from his mouth with his thumb and index finger, keeping the smoke in his lungs for as long as he could, before slowly exhaling the smoke from his nostrils, his eyes never leaving the two of you.
“Daaamn, Sanji,” Usopp drawled as he messed with the sails on the ship’s mast nearby, glancing at the chef for a second before returning to his knots. “You look like a smoking dragon. All ferocious and mean. And....extra smokey.”
Sanji’s gaze didn’t budge, Usopp’s words not fazing the cook in the slightest. “Oh yeah? And what of it knot-boy?” he asked with a slight edge to his words, taking another drag on his cigarette and exhaling through his lips.
At Sanji’s snarky question, Usopp recoiled and looked back at Sanji more closely with a confused expression. It was rare for Sanji to lose his cool or be in a bad mood for no reason, unless he was going back and forth in an argument with Zoro but even then, the blonde chef usually took those in stride with a smile, much to Zoro’s annoyance, so this was new.
“Aren’t those things supossed to calm you down?” Usopp asked as he nodded to the cigarette in the cook’s hand.
“I am calm,” Sanji rebuked a little too quickly to be true.
Usopp then noticed how intent Sanji’s stare was towards something at the front of the ship and raised an eyebrow. Whatever he was staring at must be pissing him off because the chef’s gaze looked absolutely lethal. What the hell could be making him so mad? Usopp followed Sanji’s gaze, looked towards the front of the ship, and saw....y/n and Zoro talking?
To Usopp, it looked like they were just having a normal conversation, but when he saw y/n laugh at something Zoro said, hitting his arm with a grin and Zoro having a slight smile, he heard Sanji scoff loudly in disgust and mutter something under his breath.
And in that moment, it dawned on Usopp what was up, and it was hard for him to contain his shit eating grin: Sanji was jealous. Sanji was jealous of y/n and Zoro. To Usopp, it looked like a completely normal conversation between friends since he knew of y/n’s affections for the blonde cook. But to Sanji? It probably seemed like a complete flirt fest, and he was jealous.
Up until this point Usopp had thought y/n’s crush was only one sided. Sure, he’s had his suspicions ever since Sanji seemed to stare at y/n more often than not, but Usopp was still just a guy at the end of the day, so he never considered if Sanji might actually have feelings for y/n too.
But now? Oh boy- Usopp was all caught up to speed and he couldn’t wait to meddle in their budding relationship and tease the heck out of them both for it (when the time was right, of course).
Usopp looked back over at Sanji and wiped off his grin as best he could. “You say somethin’ Sanji?” he asked innocently, knowing damn well the chef said absolutely nothing. “I thought I heard you mutter something.”
Sanji flicked the ashes off his cigarette. “No.”
“Oh. Must just be the wind then...”
Suddenly, y/n’s laughter could be heard from the ship’s front and Sanji nearly snarled in disgust and shook his head. “What the-” Sanji started but let out an exasperated sigh. “He’s not even funny,” Sanji complained before taking another hit on his cigarette.
Usopp couldn’t help himself, he had to poke the bear. “Who, Zoro? I think he’s funny.”
The blonde chef let out a humorless laugh. “Yeah, funny looking.”
He also had to twist the knife. “Well, y/n seems to think he’s funny.”
Sanji chuckled to himself and stayed quiet for a moment, contemplating Usopp’s words. “You know what? It doesn’t matter,” he muttered and took one last drag of his cigarette before putting it out and immediately lighting up a fresh one.
Unbeknown to the cook and slingshot fighter, standing underneath them and near the tangerine trees was the Going Merry’s orange-haired navigator, who had heard their whole conversation.
------------- -----
“Zoro!” You laughed loudly and hit your crewmate on his bicep. “Reading books on how to dismember your opponents doesn’t count as real reading!”
A ghost of a smile appeared on Zoro’s face as he raised an eyebrow at you. “Says you. Can you tell me fifty different ways on how to cut up a body? No? I didn’t think so.”
“Fair enough,” you relented good naturedly with a small laugh as you shook your head. “Remind me to never get on your bad side.”
A comfortable silence fell over you both as you let out a small sigh, watching the waves crash.
After a few quiet beats, however, you felt Zoro lean into your personal space as he lowly murmured, “Don’t look now, but it seems like we have an audience.”
You blinked in confusion as your eyebrows pulled together. “What? An audience? Where?” Completely disregarding Zoro’s instructions, you immediately started looking around the ship. “Watching what?”
“Us,” Zoro said simply and returned to his full height.
You shook your head in disbelief. “What? Us? Now who would be watching-” you started to say but the rest of your sentence died in your throat when you saw piercing blue eyes staring right you both. “...us?” you finished slowly.
Sanji? Sanji was your audience? But- why? What? You were so confused. Even from this far away, you could tell something was off with him. His posture was stiff and the usual smile that adorned his features whenever he saw you was nowhere to be seen.
“When did he get here? I didn’t know he was on deck...” you trailed off, about to move to hop off the crate and make your way over to Sanji to see what the matter with him was when something stopped you.
Before you could hop off the crate, you saw Sanji put out his cigarette and make his way off the deck and head down into the kitchen, not sparing you another glance. As you made your way across the deck, about to follow him into the kitchen, Usopp quickly called out to you from up on the ship’s mast, asking for your help with knot tying since ‘yours were so much better than his’. You agreed with a small sigh, not wanting Usopp to struggle by himself, so you made your way to the mast and started climbing, but not before sparing the entryway to the kitchen one last glance.
Meanwhile in the kitchen, Sanji flittered around, grabbing random ingredients he saw at first glance. Mushrooms? Grabbed. A block of cheese? Sure. Corn? Ok. Tomatoes? Sure, whatever.
As he looked down at the growing pile of ingredients on the counter, he stopped for a second to examine the pile, putting his hands in his pockets. What the hell was he supposed to make out of this? He didn’t know. He couldn’t think straight, and it was bothering the absolute hell out of him. The kitchen had always been his sanctuary, a place where he could always rely on to decompress and escape from his thoughts as he got swept away in the act of cooking that came so naturally to him. Usually.
But today? His natural instincts weren’t there. He felt his chef’s mind drawing up a blank on how to mix all of these items together and the longer he stood there, the more ticked off he became. On a normal day, he’d have thought up of 15 different dishes he could make and already have been busy at work making one of those ideas come to life. But now? There was nothing. No ideas swirling around in his head, nothing.
He could feel his face twist up in irritation the longer he was standing there until finally, he let out a short, brusque sigh, muttering, “Now what the fuck am I supposed to do with all this?”
“You’re the chef, aren’t you supposed to figure that out or something?”
The blonde chef glanced up from the pile and saw Nami casually strolling in from the deck and up to the counter opposite of him, hands clasped behind her back, with a curious eyebrow raised.
Instantly, to cover up his sour mood, the cook plastered on a fake smile. “Well, it seems my mind is a little blank at the moment, Darling. Why don’t you come over here and help me come up with an idea or two?” he offered with a wink, taking his hands out to lean against the counter.
But Nami saw right through him. “I’m good, thanks,” she declined bluntly. Nami wasn’t sure when she had become the Going Merry’s pseudo-therapist, especially since this crew hadn't been together for more than 3 months at this point, but someone had to be, and she figured the only way to get Sanji to talk right now would be if he was doing something he loved: cooking. “Actually,” she started offhandedly, “I have a request for you.”
Now that immediately got the cook’s attention. “Oh?” he asked with a raised brow, straightening up as he dropped the fake flirty persona.
“Yeah,” she said aloud, sounding more like she was trying to convince herself that she actually had a request for the cook. From behind her back, she pulled out a couple of tangerines. With a slight smile and raised brow, she said matter-of-factly, “If I remember correctly, I believe I was told I could ask for a tangerine tart anytime I’d like?”
A genuine smile came across Sanji’s face at that, his eyes crinkling at the corners, as he laughed with a nod. “The Madam is correct.” He took the fruits from Nami’s hands and placed them on the counter, pushing away his bizarre pile of ingredients to make room. “One tangerine tart coming right up,” he said and started bustling around the kitchen with purpose this time, pulling out the necessary ingredients, a far cry from his movements a couple of minutes ago.
Seeing Sanji occupied, Nami took a seat at the table, sitting where she had left her charting journal and reading glasses from breakfast that morning. She opened her journal back up and put her glasses on, flipping through the pages and resuming her sketch of her latest map.
Both of them worked in silence for a few minutes, both engrossed in their respective activities until Nami broke it. Before speaking, she snuck a glance at the chef, making sure he was preoccupied before she started prodding and sure enough, he was. Perfect.
“You know, I never told anyone this before,” Nami started, laying the groundwork for Sanji to open up, creating a tit for tat sort of thing, “but I actually love tangerine tarts.”
Sanji huffed slightly with a slight smile, not looking up from his work. “Oh yeah? Well, be prepared to fall in love with them all over again.” He started pouring heavy cream into a separate bowl, adding sugar before whisking it all together. “Even Zeff used to say I made a mean tangerine tart.”
Nami hummed. “Maybe you can make Zoro fall in love with them too,” she said casually, sneaking a quick look at Sanji, only to see him press his lips together in a firm line and start to whisk the cream harder at the mention of the swordsman. “Or y/n,” she added quickly. “I don’t think she’s ever had one either.”
At the mention of you, Sanji’s face and motions relaxed slightly. “Yeah,” he agreed. “I...think you’re right about that.”
The orange-haired girl rotated her journal ninety degrees. She decided to prod a little harder. “I think I saw them talking earlier.”
Sanji simply hummed in agreement, cracking eggs into a bowl, staying silent. With the third egg, however, he cracked it a little too hard on the counter, causing the raw egg contents to splatter everywhere and onto his black blazer.
“Ah- fucking hell,” he muttered in disgust, throwing the broken eggshell into the trash before cleaning his hands off in the sink.
Nami looked up from her work and quirked an eyebrow at her crewmate. “You good?”
The blonde cook shook his head once with a sardonic smile. “Never better,” he quipped.
Ok, she couldn’t do this dance anymore. Nami closed her journal and took off her glasses, looking straight at him. “Alright, you want to tell me what the hell is going on? You’re acting weird, even for you.” Sanji opened his mouth to protest but Nami spoke before he could. “And don’t lie to me.”
Mouth still open, Sanji exhaled slowly and deflated. “I- I’m fine.”
She rolled her eyes. “Sanji-”
Upon hearing his name, Sanji blinked and raised his eyebrows in surprise. Nami rarely called him by his name.
“Cut the bullshit,” she continued. “I heard your conversation with Usopp and you certainly didn’t sound ‘fine’.”
Sanji was caught red-handed. With what exactly? He didn’t really know but he did know he was caught in a lie because he definitely did not feel fine. He shrugged his shoulders, at a loss for words. “I...” he sighed and took off his ruined blazer, draping it over the back of an empty chair, rolling up his sleeves as he avoided Nami’s expectant stare. He grabbed a dirty rag and started cleaning the egg off the counter. “I don’t know...”
“Sanji, you can barely crack an egg.”
That brought out a short bark of laughter from the chef. “Yeah,” he relented. “Obviously.”
“Is this because of your jealously over y/n and Zoro?”
“My- my what? My jealously?” he sputtered and scoffed, still not looking Nami in the eye. “I, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why on earth would I be jealous over that stick in the mud?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Nami played along, tapping her temple, pretending she was deep in thought. “Maybe because you saw and heard them laughing from all the way across the ship?” she pointed out. When Sanji tried to wave off her accusations with an unconvincing smile, Nami decided to just go in for the kill. If Sanji wasn’t going to admit his obvious liking towards her female crewmate and friend himself, then she’d have to do it for him. “Maybe....maybe because you might have a little crush on y/n?” she offered with a raised brow, staring right at him.
“Wh-what?? A crush?” Sanji quickly rebuked, jerking his head back. “What are we? Little kids?”
From her spot at the table, Nami could swear she saw a faint dusting of pink appear on his cheeks. She smirked to herself. She got him. “Well,” she shrugged, “it doesn’t matter how old we get, we all get crushes from time to time.”
You? A crush? Sanji shook his head as he resumed making the tangerine tart. Labeling whatever feelings he had for you as simply a ‘juvenile crush’ didn’t feel right to him. You were more than that, and you didn’t deserve to be labeled as such. “No, she’s not a crush.”
“Oh, so you like-like her?” Nami said like it was obvious. “You like her as more than just a friend.”
“I-” Sanji started but stopped himself and sighed, feeling his irritation grow the longer this conversation went on. Now even the kitchen wasn’t bringing him peace? First, smoking and now this? What was next? “Why does it matter? All of a sudden, my love life is interesting to you and up for debate? I don’t remember asking for your opinion.”
Nami watched his jaw tense and his body become stiff as he started zesting the tangerines. Clearly whatever feelings Sanji was dealing with, he wasn’t ready to openly talk about them, so she decided to back off.
She put her hands up in surrender, slumping back in her chair as she said, “Hey, I’m...I’m sorry. You’re right.” Deciding to give the chef his space, she gathered her belongings and stood up, making her way to the counter. “If you ever need to...talk or anything, I’m here,” she offered quietly. In a normal tone, she added, “Let me know when the tarts are ready. I really do want y/n and Zoro to try one.”
Speaking of the devil, you came into the kitchen from the deck, eyes lighting up at the sight of Sanji cooking. Seeing Sanji cook was one of your favorite things and you always loved to guess what he was making. “Sanji! Ooo, what are you making?”
Nami watched as Sanji’s whole demeanor change at the sight of you, like a switch being flipped on. She couldn’t help but smile knowingly between you both. “I’ll be in my room,” she announced before making her way out of the kitchen, leaving you both alone.
Sanji had a wide smile, shoulders relaxing as his eyes lit up. “Why don’t you guess? Give it your best shot.”
“Oh! I love this game. Ok, let’s see,” you said as you surveyed the ingredients laid out before you. “I see flour, sugar, butter and tangerines...are you making a tangerine cake or something?”
Whatever jealousy or anger he had been feeling all day just instantly disappeared once he was with you. He felt like himself again, all carefree and lighthearted as he chuckled at your guess. “Not quite, Missus. But nice try,” he said as he looked into your eyes with a crooked smile.
Missus. You felt your heart skip a beat at the nickname and you felt your insides became all warm. You hoped your face didn’t give away your swooning. He's never called you that before and you hoped to God that he would never stop.
“Ah, my bad,” you laughed embarrassedly. “What are you making then?”
“I, am making a tangerine tart,” he proudly stated as he grabbed another egg, perfectly cracking it this time. “At the request of the ship’s navigator.”
A wide grin broke out across your face. “No way!!” you squealed eagerly, causing Sanji to laugh. “I’ve always wanted to try one!”
The blonde chef nodded. “Yes, she did mention that actually.” After a beat, he added, “I hope you like it.”
“Of course I will,” you said without hesitation. “I know I haven’t known you for that long, but it seems like everything you make is phenomenal. You’re the best cook I know.”
Normally, nearly everyone compliments his cooking (except for Zoro) and he never really thought anything of it. He knew was the best cook in the East Blue and someday, the whole world when he found the All Blue. But hearing that compliment from you? How you said it so easily and with such certainty? He felt a funny, warm feeling deep within his chest and when he looked at you, just like how you knew for certain that he was the best chef around, he knew right then that you really were the most beautiful woman he’s ever known.
So, yeah. Nami was right. He guessed he did have a little crush on you, or ‘like-liked’ you- whatever she was saying.
“Do you mind if I watch?”
Your question broke the little staring trance he was in, blinking and tearing his gaze away from you as he tried to refocus on the task before him. He truly had to make sure this was the best tart he’s ever made.
He nodded, perhaps a little too eagerly. God, he was probably acting like an excited puppy, but he couldn’t help himself. “Of course you can,” he agreed with a small smile.
As you pulled up a stool to sit on the opposite side of the counter, Sanji realized something: him cooking in the kitchen with you sitting nearby? That’s something he could get used to and get used to very quickly.

You were such a coward.
In your mind, there was no other way to describe yourself and your pattern of recent behavior. Ever since your um, realization at the bar a couple of weeks ago, you’ve been avoiding Sanji as best you could.
Normally, you’d both either conveniently end up alone together or seek the other one out like magnets, but ever since you had admitted to yourself that you were in fact, in love with the chef and not just crushing on him anymore, you were finding it harder and harder to keep your feelings under wraps.
With every wink, smile, and flirty jab directed at you by the charismatic blonde, you felt your resolve weaken by the day. All you wanted to do was grab him by the lapels of his suit jacket and kiss him until you both needed air; you wanted to drown yourself in him and whisper how much you loved him, spilling your heart out to the man you were in love with but you just.... couldn’t.
Besides the fact he probably didn’t return your affections, you couldn’t risk compromising the crew’s dynamic. There was just too much on the line, so you just had to keep your feelings to yourself, as much as it pained you. Every night before you went to bed, you reminded yourself that this was just how life was sometimes.
Since you couldn’t confess your feelings, that left you with only one other option: avoid him as much as you could without being weird.
But that was easier said than done.
“Care for a cold drink, my love?” Sanji asked you one hot day as you and the crew were playing poker, or trying to at least, as he held a chilled glass bottle of water in his hands with a couple of empty glasses.
The game had turned into more of ‘Nami teaching everyone but Zoro how to play poker’, but you’d all been out here what felt like forever and you, Luffy, and Usopp were still as confused as ever.
You looked up from the cards in your hand to see Sanji looking down at you with an expectant smile, his blue eyes twinkling with an emotion you still didn't quite understand.
The whole scenario felt like DeJa'Vu.
You had noticed that look in his eye whenever you’d make eye contact with him as of late, but you just brushed it off. The last thing you needed for your delusions and heartbreak was to think that Sanji could possibly love you too.
“No thanks,” you replied, brushing him off and looking back down at your hand, trying to ignore the flutter in your heart at one of his nicknames for you. “I’m good.”
At your response, Nami, Usopp, and Zoro all looked up simultaneously, quickly looking at you then to Sanji with raised eyebrows. You never turned down one of Sanji’s offers.
The only person not to react was Luffy, as oblivious as ever. “What are you talking about y/n?” the straw hat captain asked as he rearranged the cards in his hand, not looking at you. “You just said you were thirsty a couple of minutes ago.”
“Yeah, well...” you trailed off, shifting in your seat, your cheeks heating up at being caught and called out in a lie. “I, uh, I’m not, anymore.”
At your lame response, all eyes turned to look at you, sans Luffy’s, as a beat of silence passed.
Ever the instigator, Usopp broke the awkward silence first. “You sure about that y/n?” he asked nonchalantly as he turned his attention back to his cards. “You look a little flushed.”
“Yeah,” Zoro agreed casually, placing his cards face down on the table as he rubbed his jaw. “You look like you could use a drink y/n.”
“In fact, you look so flushed, that poor Sanji came all the way out here from the kitchen, just so he could take care of you by hand-delivering you a cold glass of water, and you still turn him down? Oof,” Usopp clicked his tongue and shook his head once. “That’s cold.”
“Ice-cold,” Zoro quipped without missing a beat.
You looked up from your cards, opening your mouth to tell them off when Nami spoke before you could.
“I’ll take a glass of water, Sanji. Thank you,” Nami quickly intervened, giving the bantering men a sharp look.
“I’ll take one too, my good man,” Luffy piped up, raising a finger in the air and looking at Sanji.
Sanji stood there for a moment, looking at you completely baffled before snapping out of his daze. He blinked a few times in confusion, letting out a small huff, his smile faltering slightly. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, sure thing. Of course,” he replied, placing the glasses and filling them up and handing them out.
“Hey, waiter? Could I get a beer instead?” Zoro asked Sanji as he placed a cold glass of water in front of Luffy.
“Oo- could I get a beer too?” Usopp quickly interjected.
“Uh, sure,” Sanji replied before placing a glass of water in front of Nami, saying in a softer tone, “here you go, Madam.” The blonde cook straightened up slightly, capping the glass water bottle and picking up the, now spare, empty glasses. Sanji looked down at you, a brow slightly raised as he asked you in a slightly disbelieving tone, “And nothing for you, Missus?”
At hearing the nickname, your heart skipped a beat. But you still couldn’t look at him. “Nope. I’m ok Sanji, thanks.”
At your dismissal, Sanji sucked on his teeth, nodding once. “Alright. Got it.” He exhaled slightly. “I’ll, uh, be right back with the beers,” he said dejectedly before turning on his heel and making his way back towards the kitchen.
After a moment, Luffy hummed, breaking the tense silence. “Yeah, I’m not really understanding this whole ‘poker’ thing,” the captain said, putting his cards face up on the table. “What if we play slapjack instead?” he asked brightly, looking around the table.
Zoro scoffed. “I haven’t played slapjack since I was a kid.”
“How about we play go fish instead?” Usopp asked.
“I am not playing go fish. Now that game is for children,” Zoro quickly rebuked, like he was insulted at the idea of playing such a stupid game. After a beat, the swordsman smirked as he said, “Which makes sense why you’d want to play, Usopp, since you’re a child yourself-”
“Hey!” Usopp protested in a high-pitched voice. “Just because I drink chocolate milk for breakfast sometimes doesn’t make me-”
At the sound of the boys’ bickering, Nami tuned them out with a roll of her eyes. Instead of listening to their pointless arguing, she couldn’t help but watch a despondent Sanji disappear from the deck.
She sighed. It looked like it was time to have another talk with him.
----------- --------
The right time to talk didn’t come until a few days later.
It was early in the morning on the Going Merry. The sun was rising in the sky, the sea was surprisingly calm, and Sanji thought it was the perfect morning to try his luck at fishing.
When Nami emerged out on deck, making her way to the upper deck to check her map and charts, she saw the blonde chef leaning against the railing, fishing pole in hand as he looked calmly out into the sea.
The moment was perfect.
“Getting any bites?” Nami asked conversationally, adjusting the bag strap on her shoulder that housed her trusty charts, as she came up next to her friend and leaned on the railing to his left.
Sanji smiled down at her slightly, sparing her a quick glance before looking back out across the sea. “Nah, nothin’ yet,” he sighed. “But I’m sure somethin’ will happen sooner or later.”
At hearing his words, Nami hummed to herself: now that was her in.
“Yeah, I’m sure it will...” Nami trailed off. She then nudged her elbow against his arm, trying to contain her sly smile as she teased, “Now what about hooking something else on this line, hm?”
The chef cast her a curious glance. “What, like a shark?”
“Not exactly.... more like a certain girl on this crew...” Nami trailed off knowingly. “Whose name is y/n...”
Sanji let out a light laugh, shaking his head as he rolled his eyes playfully. “Ah, not this again.”
“I heard that you and her got, uh, pretty cozy at the bar a couple of weeks ago,” she said, looking up at him and raising an eyebrow, her smirk growing when she saw the tips of his ears flush pink. “Apparently you guys looked like you were going to kiss or something.”
The side of his face scrunched up as he shrugged a shoulder. “Nah... nothin’ like that happened.”
But Nami noticed his choice of words. “So, you wanted something to happen?”
“Well-” Sanji shifted and kept his focus on the ocean, looking down for a second, a blush crawling up his neck. “I- uh, wouldn’t.... exactly be opposed to the idea...”
“’Opposed to the idea’?” Nami repeated with a look of disbelief. “What are you talking about? Buying a new set of kitchen knives or something? Come on, be serious for a second.”
The blonde cook let out a small, defeated sigh. He was quiet for a moment. “Of course, I wanted something to happen, Nami,” he admitted quietly. “But she didn’t.”
Nami narrowed her eyes. “Who, y/n?”
Sanji nodded once and hummed.
The navigator furrowed her brows. That didn’t make any sense. As far as Nami was concerned, it was so obvious to her, and the rest of the crew, sans Luffy, that y/n and Sanji both had feelings for one another, so what the heck happened? Especially since they were ‘so close’ to sharing a kiss that night, or so she was told.
She looked up at the blonde as she asked quietly, “What exactly happened that night, Sanji?”
At Nami’s quiet question, Sanji felt his heart drop because, honestly? He had no clue. He was certain that when he was holding your face in his hands, your beautiful eyes staring widely back at him, full of unshed tears, when he was telling you the truth that you were indeed the most gorgeous woman on planet earth, that you would finally be able to see and feel the love that he’s harbored in his heart for you this entire time. That he would finally make his dreams come true and kiss you, seeing if your lips were as soft as they looked and to finally know what they felt like against his own.
But that didn’t happen. Instead, you looked at him like he had just told you the most devastating news, your face full of pain and heartbreak, and your quiet rejection had hurt more than any kitchen wound ever could. You had to literally pry him off you because he wasn’t strong enough to let you go himself (he doesn’t know if he ever would be).
Why did you react like that? What were your feelings regarding him? What happened? Those were questions that have kept him up every night since.
He’s never needed a smoke more in his life.
Still feeling nothing on the hook, he decided to give up for now. He started reeling up the line and placed the fishing pole against the railing on his right. “Which version do you want to hear? The short or long one?” he asked as he dug into his pockets to pull out a cigarette and his lighter.
Nami watched him closely as he lit one up in his mouth. “I want the truth.”
He let out a short, humorless laugh as he placed a cigarette between his lips and flicked the lighter until a small flame appeared, holding it against the cigarette’s end. “The truth is,” he started, his voice muffled slightly as he pocketed the lighter away and took a long drag. He held the lit object between his middle and index finger, exhaling the smoke, his next words coming out crystal clear, “is that I have absolutely no idea.”
Nami rested her forearms on top of the railing, looking away from the blonde and out at the ocean. “Well, let’s start at the beginning then. While I was still there, Luffy was already back on the ship, Usopp was dancing horribly and completely drunk off his ass, you were at the bar, and y/n and Zoro were still at our table. So, what happened after?”
As Nami set the scene, Sanji started to remember that night like it was yesterday. “Let’s see,” he took a drag, “I was at the bar, just talking to the bartender. I wanted to see if he had any interesting cocktails or mixed drinks that I’ve never heard of before.”
“Uh huh.”
“Then this woman comes over to me, starts chatting me up.” He flicked the ashes off his cigarette. “So, I figured I’d entertain her for a bit, you know? Didn’t want to be rude.”
Already feeling her frustration towards the cook start to simmer beneath her skin, she fought the urge to facepalm and roll her eyes. Men, she thought sardonically. They were complete idiots sometimes.
But it was no use. She couldn’t keep the slight irritation and accusatory tone out of her voice as she asked, “Did you flirt with her?”
At her question, Sanji recoiled, as if he were offended by being accused of such a thing. “No. No, of course I didn’t. Why would I do that?”
The orange-haired girl scoffed slightly as she said, “Well, I hate to break it to you, Sanji, but you’re kind of a flirt.”
The blonde cook was quiet for a moment as he mulled over her words.
Did he enjoy women? Of course he did. He loved to give women compliments, tell them how beautiful they were, make them feel weak in the knees, and maybe even push his luck and sneak in a little innuendo here and there to see what would happen.
But as Sanji looked down, his eyes trained on the burning roll of tobacco between his fingers, he realized that, yes, while he was a flirt (there was no denying that), he wasn’t really flirting with women anymore. Instead, he was just flirting with one woman now: you.
The corner of his mouth quirked up at the thought, the realization bringing him a comforting sort of peace. “That I am,” he relented. He looked up towards the horizon. “But only with one woman in particular now,” he replied coolly as he took another drag, exhaling the smoke between his lips. “No other woman matters to me like that anymore.”
It was in this moment, that she too, realized that he wasn’t the same man they had met at the Baratie nearly a year ago. Ever since she had called him out for his jealousy over Zoro, and blossoming crush on you that one particular day months ago, he had never flirted with her again, only with you.
As Nami studied her friend’s side profile, she saw how at peace he seemed and had a faraway look in his eye. She couldn’t help but smile to herself. He looked and acted like a man who was in love.
“Is that why you always call her ‘my love’?” she asked with a hint of a knowing tone in her voice as she looked back towards the water.
An embarrassed laugh escaped his lips. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“Well, I am asking, aren’t I?”
“Yeah...you are,” he answered with a crooked smile. He was quiet for a moment, looking down at his hands as he played with the silver ring on his finger before saying in a low voice, “And yes. It is.”
Feeling a sense of validation at being right, Nami beamed slightly. “I knew it.” As quickly as her validation came though, it went away twice as quick and was replaced with a sense of curiosity. If he didn’t flirt with that other woman, then what happened? “Alright, so you didn’t flirt with that woman.”
“No.”
“So, what did you talk about then?”
He took another drag as he did his best to remember their conversation. “Nothin’ crazy. The crew mostly.”
“Wow,” the woman gushed as she leaned in closer to Sanji, her smile as bright as neon a sign that read ‘danger’. “So, you’re like a real-life pirate then?”
Sanji grinned as he clasped his hands together, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. “As real as a straw-hat pirate chef can get, darling.”
She looked at him expectantly, taking a step toward him and placing her left hand on top of his right forearm. “So, is the rest of your crew as handsome as you?” She leaned in closer. “How about as sexy?”
At her words and touch, Sanji’s brows quirked up slightly. Well, this woman was certainly forward, he thought. Keeping his good-natured crooked grin on, however, he cocked his head to the side and narrowed his eyes as he leaned forward slightly, a move that would’ve had you blushing red, he thought fondly. “Depends on who’s asking.”
The woman flipped her hair over her shoulder, trailing a fingernail over his blazer’s sleeve as she giggled lightly. “Oh, you know, just little ol’ me,” she answered innocently, looking at him through her lashes. “Why? Is that a bad thing?”
“If you were asking my crewmate Usopp then, yeah. It would be.”
Although she had absolutely no idea who Usopp was, the woman started laughing, hitting him playfully and placing her other hand on top of his. “Oh Sanji, pookie, you’re so cute.” She unclasped his hands, intertwining their fingers together. “Are there openings? It sounds like you guys need a pretty girl on the team.”
Seeing where this was going, Sanji breathed out a humorless laugh, letting her hand go and putting his newly freed hand into his pocket. “We’ve already got one, thanks.”
Not expecting his subtle rejection, the woman tilted her head to the side, narrowing her eyes like she wasn’t believing what she was hearing. “Oh? You already have a girl on the crew?”
“Two, actually,” he replied casually, turning his head towards the crowd, eyes scanning the room like he was looking for something, or someone.
The woman jerked her head back, blinking rapidly as she looked at Sanji like he was speaking a foreign language. “I’m- I’m sorry, pookie. I’m just a little confused.”
“About what?” he asked distractedly, still not looking at her.
Feeling her irritation and confusion build at Sanji both blatantly rejecting and ignoring her within the span of five minutes, she tried to win his attention back. She replaced her hand on top of his right forearm. “So, there’s two girls on your crew? But only one of them is pretty?”
But Sanji wasn’t listening to her, he was trying to find you and when he finally did, a smile slid across his face at the sight. You were sitting with Zoro still, distracted by conversation, Nami and Luffy nowhere to be seen, but you looked a little off. From where he was standing, you looked like you were arguing with the swordsman, and whatever he had said to you made you pout. Sanji’s smile only grew at the sight, and he sighed lightly. You were just too cute sometimes.
Continuing her line of questioning, the woman twirled a lock of hair around her finger. “Is she as pretty as me?”
At her question, Sanji broke out of his little staring spell. “As pretty as you?” he repeated, eyes still trained on you for another moment before looking back at the woman. As his eyes quickly scanned over her face, he rubbed his jaw in an attempt to hide his slowly growing grin at the boldness of this woman and her line of questioning.
She was asking if she was prettier than you? That notion alone was absurd, it almost made him laugh. Of course she wasn’t prettier than you. This woman was cute, sure, but you were stunning. You were gorgeous. You were most beautiful woman he’s ever met, not just in looks either, and he knew that no other woman in the entire universe could ever hold a candle to you.
But, at the end of the day, Sanji vowed he would never be rude to a woman, so he schooled his features and raised a good-natured eyebrow instead. “What is this? A beauty pageant or something?”
“It could be,” she replied, a glint in her eye. “So,” she sighed, “tell me a little bit more about my competition- oop, I mean, these other girls.”
Choosing to ignore her remarks, Sanji shifted slightly as he told her about you and Nami. “Yeah, so, there’s two women on our crew. One has orange hair and is our navigator, she’s good at reading maps and things like that.” Sanji then turned his head towards the bar, his eyes raking over the various alcohol bottles lined up against the wall, his eyes becoming a little distant, a small crooked smile on his face as he said, “Then there’s another one who doesn’t have a particular job, but does odd chores around the ship, helps out in any way she can, you know?”
The woman noticed his demeanor change and narrowed her eyes slightly, asking with a bite, “So, she’s like a maid then, or something?”
Sanji flinched at her question. “What? No,” he answered defensively, eyes snapping to meet hers, “of course she’s not the maid.” A beat passed as a wry smile came over his face as he added, “Actually, if anyone would be considered the maid on the ship, it’d be me since I basically wait on her hand and foot.”
“What? How?” she scoffed.
The blonde chef laughed good-naturedly, not picking up on this girl’s disdain. “It’s a funny story actually,” he started, grinning slightly as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “There’re times where I’d make her favorite meal if she was sick or not feeling well, make her a special dessert, or...she’d make one for me, actually,” a wistful smile appeared on his face, his smile only growing as he continued, “but there was one particular instance a couple months ago where she had requested I make some boiled potatoes for dinner. It, it was this whole thing...” he trailed off, waving his hand around.
Not getting the joke, the woman plastered on a smile and faked a laugh, squeezing his arm lightly as she responded in the fakest voice ever, “Oh, wow.”
Sanji opened his mouth to continue explaining the dynamic between you and him more, when a voice behind him caught his attention.
“One beer and a refill please,” a familiar voice ordered, a voice he’d recognize anywhere, even if he was blind and deaf, a voice he’d go to the ends of the earth for just to hear one last time.
“Y/n?” he asked aloud, his spirits lifting as he turned around only to see you standing there, hands on top of the bar, fingers drumming against the hardwood.
“Oh, hey,” you greeted curtly, not looking at him.
Sanji frowned at your demeanor. Normally, you always greeted him with a warm smile and a look on your face that gave him hope that maybe, just maybe, you also liked him more than just a friend or a crewmate, but that wasn’t the case right now.
“I didn’t think you were a big drinker,” he commented curiously as he leaned sideways against the bar, not even noticing that he had shaken off the woman’s grip on him, his eyes scanning over your features.
“She’s not,” Nami answered without thinking, interrupting Sanji.
“Yeah, I know.” The blonde took a long drag on his cigarette, the tip of it glowing bright as he inhaled, the slight breeze ruffling his bangs slightly as he kept his gaze in front of him. He kept the smoke in his lungs for a moment, exhaling it slowly through his nostrils. He pursed his lips. “That’s why it bothered me so much.”
Nami hummed in agreement. It bothered her too. “So, what did y/n say?”
“’I’m not.’ Those were her exact words.”
“What’d you say to that?”
“Nothing.” Sanji put out the butt of his cigarette against the railing. “I didn’t get a chance to ask her anything. That woman spoke before I could,” he said as he pulled out another cigarette and lit it up, snapping the lighter shut and pocketing it.
Nami exhaled a defeated sigh. “Ok, so keep going. That woman butted in, and said what?”
Sanji scoffed lightly, shaking his head. “Nothing good.”
“You must be the potato girl!” the woman commented a little too loudly, a wide smile plastered on her face.
Sanji felt his heart clench at hearing that, the way she said those words not sitting right with him and hating how you seemed to shrink before her as she said that.
“The- the what?”
“Yeah, don’t you like potatoes or something? Or is it because you just look like a potato?” she asked with a laugh, her words sharp like a knife, as she draped herself over Sanji and hit his chest.
As soon as he heard those words, Sanji felt his body become stiff. His eyes immediately went to yours, trying to gauge your emotions, but his stomach sank to his feet at your expression. Your head was hung low, eyes trained on the ground, your hands shaking slightly. From the bit he could see of your face, your skin was flushed, a clear look of shame and embarrassment written all over your striking features.
Sanji felt a wave of protectiveness and anger wash over him. There was no way he was going to let you stand there and feel like that, not if he could help it. You were the most beautiful woman on the planet, the prettiest girl he’s ever seen, and your soul was exquisite too. You were a kind and gentle soul, someone who put others before herself, someone who went to great lengths for the people you cared for, a girl who was fun to be around, who could make even a redundant chore like washing dishes fun. Someone who lit up a room when they walked in, whose smile held the power of a thousand suns. Someone who could make a bad, traumatic day into a great one with a simple act of kindness.
And there was no way in hell that Sanji would ever let you feel like anything less than the beauty you were as long as he was still living and breathing.
In one swift motion, Sanji pushed himself off the bar, removing the woman’s hold on him, taking a few steps over to you, snaking his arm around your waist, his hand resting on your right hip comfortably, like it was always meant to be there, as he pulled you against him. His thumb started to rub small circles against your hip, hoping to instill some sort of comfort in you.
“Now, Madam, I don’t think those are the right words to describe the most beautiful woman in all of the four seas now, is it?” he asked the horrible woman as he turned to look down at you with a soft smile.
He felt you jolt slightly, your face immediately whipping up to look at him with your wide, doe-like eyes. His smile deepened as he kept looking at you. You truly were one of a kind.
“I said: is it?” Sanji asked, repeating his earlier question as he tore his eyes away from yours to look at the woman straight on, his eyebrows slightly raised. He was in no mood to fight but for you, he could do it all day.
The woman stuttered, “Well, I- I didn’t mean it like that, Sanji-bear, really-”
But Sanji had enough of her bullshit. He removed his left hand from his pocket, raising it into the air, quickly silencing her as he said in a condescending tone, “Yeah, I gotta be honest- I highly doubt that, sweetheart.”
The woman bristled, her eyes widening and eyebrows nearly reaching her highline, her mouth agape. She looked back and forth between him and you, staring at you for a moment before scoffing and putting her hands on her hips, shaking her head in disbelief, muttering, “I knew it. I fucking knew it.”
Hearing her words and seeing the look of pure, unfiltered jealously and hatred seething from this woman, Sanji quirked a brow and blinked.
Knew what?
The woman locked eyes with him and closed the gap between them, coming up on his left, her mouth whispering into his ear, “You’re fucking in love with her. And you’re too much of a coward to do anything about it.”
“She called you a coward?” Nami asked in complete disbelief, wide eyes looking up at her blonde friend.
Sanji flicked the ashes off his cigarette. “Yup,” he answered, his voice devoted of any life. He looked down at his hands and clicked his tongue. “She called me a coward and walked straight off.”
“That’s a little harsh...”
“Maybe,” the blonde let out a humorless laugh, “but that doesn’t make it any less true. I can’t even deal with my own feelings.” He stared at the cigarette between his fingers for a beat before quietly saying, “And y/n deserves better than that.”
“Well,” Nami sighed, rolling her tongue around in her mouth as she tried to find the right words to say. “Feelings can be complicated... I don’t think it makes you a coward for not telling y/n you love her right off the bat.”
Sanji let out an aggravated sigh, shaking his head once. “See, but that’s the thing. I am a coward.” He put the burning tobacco stick put to his mouth, inhaling the smokey air. “I’ve known I had feelings for y/n, for a while now. And it takes a jealous woman at a bar whispering that in my ear for me to realize that I’m in love with her? I-” but Sanji cuts himself off and mutters something under his breath in disgust. The blonde took a deep breath, his voice slightly breaking as he said, “I am a coward Nami.”
Nami couldn’t help the enormous wave of sympathy that came over her as she listened to her crewmate and friend. She’s never heard Sanji sound so defeated and depressed before; it didn’t sit right with her. He was normally confident and cocky (to a degree), always taking things on with a wink and a grin, so to hear him berate himself and be so down on his luck wasn’t normal. She didn’t like it.
But Sanji continued, his shoulders sagging as he said, “And you know what’s worse? I can’t even tell her how I feel. I can’t tell her, and she wants nothing to do with me.” He took a drag. “You saw how she was the other day when you guys were playing cards, or how’s she’s been lately. She’s been avoiding me ever since that night.”
“Why can’t you tell her?” she asked him, circling back to his earlier statement.
The chef shrugged, mumbling slightly, his face scrunching up on one side. “Eh... I don’t know what to say.”
“Practice on me then,” Nami said suddenly, surprising herself.
“What?” Sanji asked, taken aback, turning to look down at his orange-haired friend like she grew three heads. “Practice what?”
“Practice what you want to say to her.” Nami turned her body towards him, opening her arms and nodding at him in encouragement. “Pretend I’m y/n. How would you confess your feelings to her?”
Sanji looked away from her, letting out an embarrassed laugh. “Oh, Nami, nah... look, I appreciate you listening and all, but you don’t have to do that.”
“Sanji,” she let out an exasperated sigh. “It’s the only way you guys can get through this. Now, come on, pretend I’m y/n and I find you out here on deck.” Nami cleared her throat, trying her best imitation of you. “Hi, Sanji,” she started, looking up at him expectantly.
But Sanji started to laugh lightly, shaking his head. “She wouldn’t say ‘hi’ like that.”
Nami rolled her eyes and groaned. “Can you just be serious for a second, Sanji? I’m trying to help you out here.”
Hearing that, Sanji quieted down, turning his body to fully face Nami, leaning against the railing with his side, his face full of resignation. She was right, he had to take this seriously if he was going to stop being a coward and finally tell you how he felt.
He swallowed, closing his eyes for a second as he took a deep breath, before opening them and looking down at Nami, exhaling slightly. “Hi, y/n,” he greeted quietly after a moment.
“I know things have been weird between us lately... is there anything you want to tell me?”
“Y-yes, yes. There’re a few things I wanted to tell you actually...” Sanji trailed off, licking his lips as he felt his heartrate picking up speed. He looked to the right, looking out into the water. He could feel his fingertips tingle with anxiety as he let out a nervous laugh.
Good God, he thought to himself. And this was only the ‘practice run’. How was he ever going to get through the real thing?
“Yes?” Nami asked, urging him on.
Taking a deep breath, Sanji steeled his nerves, turning to look at Nami dead in the eyes. He just had to say it, right? Those three little words? It was like ripping off a band-aid. The quicker he just said it, the less his anxiety would ultimately end up being (he hoped).
So, he did it.
“I..”
“Yes?”
“I....I-”
“You what Sanji?”
“I love you,” he said quickly, a rush of both anxiety and relief washing over him.
He did it.
He said it. Not to you, exactly, but he had said it. He had said those three little words that he felt whenever he was with you, whenever he saw you, or whenever he thought about you.
He could actually do this.
Nami couldn’t help the big smile that broke out across her face at hearing those words, feeling proud of her friend for saying them.
But what she and Sanji didn’t know, however, is that you had heard them too. You stood there, on the main deck, right underneath the upper one, emerging from the kitchen to do your morning routine of double checking Usopp’s knots on the ship’s mast and sails when you had heard the tail end of Sanji and Nami’s conversation.
It was wrong to eavesdrop, you knew that, but you also couldn’t help yourself. Their voices had sounded hushed and serious, it seemed like whatever they were talking about was important and your suspicions were right when you had heard Nami ask Sanji if there was ‘anything you wanted to tell her’.
When Sanji had answered with ‘Yes’, you felt frozen in place, unable to move. Your breathing stopped. You hoped with every fiber in your being that he wasn’t going to say the one thing that you had wanted to hear from him more than anything to her.... but he did.
He said ‘I love you’ to Nami and in that moment you felt your entire being shatter, your heart breaking and collapsing and turning to dust as you quietly gasped for air. Your chest hurt. Your mind was blank. Tears blurred your vision as your feet carried you inside at back to your room on autopilot.
Sanji was in love, yes, but not with you. It never was you, and it would never be you.
It was Nami.
He was in love with Nami.
You weren’t necessarily surprised, so why did it hurt so badly?
But you knew why. You’ve always known why. Your heart always hurt when it came to Sanji because your love was always one sided.
And now your suspicions were confirmed, and it looked like your love would always be one sided.
Out on deck, Nami grabbed Sanji’s arm, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Yes! See? There you go! You said it. Now, come on,” she urged and waved him on, “say it again. You can do this.”
Sanji couldn’t help it, as silly as this exercise sounded at first, he couldn’t believe that it was actually working. He felt better. A lopsided smile bloomed on his face as he let out an embarrassed laugh.
Nami was right. He could do this, and he would do this.
He was going to tell you how he felt. And nothing was going to stop him.

It really shouldn’t bother you...but it did. You couldn’t help yourself. Sanji wasn’t even yours, he never would be, and yet...you couldn’t help the wave of jealousy and annoyance that crashed over you every time he would be a little too friendly with other women. (At least, too friendly by your standards and, of course, you thought your standards were pretty reasonable.)
But Sanji wasn’t even yours (he never would be). You weren’t his wife or his girlfriend, hell, you were only just crewmates to each other, so there really should be no reason why you felt as angry and jealous as you did.
That still didn’t stop you, however. In fact, it just enraged you even more and you didn’t know why.
It was just a stupid crush you had on him, right? So why did it bother you so much when he would cast that perfect smile of his towards someone else? When he would wink at another woman and say some suave innuendo that he would never say to you? Or even touch their shoulders or give a hug to someone else when he’s never even touched or grazed your arm or shoulder by accident before?
“If you stare any harder at that glass, it’s going to shatter from all the daggers you’re giving it.”
You blinked, looking up from the drink in your hand and to the left, only to see an ever calm and nonchalant Zoro take a swing of his beer, keeping his gaze towards the bustling nightclub/bar you all were currently visiting.
It’d been a couple of weeks of straight sailing on the open ocean and everyone on board was going a little stir crazy, even the ever-happy-go-lucky Luffy. So, when the Going Merry’s captain had smelled a whiff of food in the air midafternoon up on the masthead that wasn’t Sanji’s doing, everyone had collectively decided to follow Luffy’s nose and see what lied ahead.
After a half hour of sailing, you all had stumbled across another ship-like restaurant that, admittedly, even looked better than the Baratie. So, it was an easy decision for the crew to decide to dock there for a couple of hours and give Sanji the night off from making dinner, much to the chef’s annoyance.
But it had all turned out to be the right decision in the end, apparently, since Sanji had made a point to visit the kitchen and give his compliments to the chef.
Now, all of the straw hats had made it to the outdoor bar area to ‘drink the night away’, as Usopp had so jovially put it, and you’ve been here ever since.
“Ha ha,” you deadpanned, looking back at the nearly full drink you had in your hand. “Very funny Zoro. You know, you should quit piracy and be a standup comedian.”
Your green-haired crewmate turned his face to you with an unamused expression. “You’ve been nursing that drink all night.” He arched an eyebrow. “You ok?”
At that question, your eyes immediately went to Sanji, who had been at the bar for a majority of the evening, chatting with the bartender but, of course, as if on cue, another gorgeous girl slinked right up to him, batting her eyelashes and ever so casually rested her hand on his bicep, sliding it all the way down to his forearm as she giggled at something the chef said.
Sanji, on the other hand, flashed the new woman, the tenth this evening at least, you thought sourly, one of his dazzling white smiles, leaning forward slightly as if he was telling her some sort of inside joke, causing her to laugh louder and place her other hand on top of his. Sanji’s smile only grew wider.
You couldn’t help the stab of pain your heart felt at the sight.
“Never better,” you replied to Zoro bitterly as you quickly downed your drink.
His gaze didn’t budge. “You don’t look fine.”
“Yeah, thanks for pointing that out Captain Obvious,” you quipped sarcastically under your breath, stealing another glance at the object of your affections. He was still chatting with that other woman, and you couldn’t help letting out a small breath as you felt the familiar sting of jealously deep within your chest.
God, it hurt. It hurt so goddamn badly, and you didn’t know why.
Zoro followed your line of sight and when he saw the Going Merry’s cook at the end of it, he hummed to himself, hiding his sly smirk behind his beer as he looked back at you. “Sounds like you need another drink then.”
“I guess so,” you sighed, sitting up and leaning over to grab the bottle of liquor that sat in the middle of your small table to refill your glass when Zoro stopped you.
“Nuh-uh,” the green-haired swordsman said as he put the heel of his boot on the table to block off your reaching hand. “If you want a refill, then you have to go to the bar,” he explained, nodding his head towards the bar, and, coincidently, Sanji. “This bottle is mine.”
“What?? Aw come on Zoro,” you whined. “I don’t want to go over there.”
“Oh? Any particular reason why not?”
It must’ve been the liquor, because you could’ve sworn you heard a knowing tone laced in his voice but when you looked at your friend, he looked as nonchalant as ever. Maybe you were imagining things.
“No,” you lied, your cheeks heating up slightly.
“Good,” Zoro said, taking a long swing of his beer, finishing it up and slamming the empty bottle on the glass tabletop lightly. “Then when you’re up there, get me another beer.” You opened your mouth to protest again but Zoro spoke before you could. “Since, you said there’s no problem.”
Shit. You were backed into a corner. And the only way out was to go up to the bar and be face-to-face with Sanji.
You looked back towards the crowded bar and felt another wave of emotion come over you. But these feelings were hard to discern. The pair was still talking at the bar, the woman still being a little too touchy towards him for your taste. You sighed slightly. Maybe when you got over there, he would just ignore you, since he was so engrossed in conversation it seemed. Part of you didn’t know if you wanted that wish to come true or not.
“Alright- fuck it, whatever,” you grumbled as you snatched your empty glass and made your way to the bar, leaving a smug Zoro alone.
As you made your way across the small dance floor and towards the bar, you felt your heart fill with dread with every step you took. You prayed to whatever God was out there that Sanji didn’t notice you but, of course, when you neared the bar, you noticed that the only open spot was behind him.
How fucking perfect.
“One beer and a refill please,” you quickly ordered, handing over your empty glass to the bartender.
 “Y/n?”
Your heart clenched at hearing Sanji’s voice. Why did you think, for even a moment, that Sanji would ever ignore you? The man seemed to always notice you no matter what, even when no one else did, so why would he ignore you now?
But you couldn’t look at him. “Oh, hey,” you quickly greeted.
Sanji, however, didn’t miss a beat. “I didn’t think you were a big drinker,” he commented curiously, turning his body fully to face you, leaning against the bar, and unintentionally removing the woman’s grip on his arm.
“I’m not,” you answered, casting a quick glance up at him.
The blonde chef blinked in confusion, his brows pulled together slightly, but before he could question you further, his ‘date’ for the evening quickly made her presence known.
“Sanji?” the woman called out sweetly, stepping to the cook’s right, placing her hand on his right bicep and the other on his shoulder as she looked up at him with a coy smile. When she looked down at you, however, you could see the look in her eye that was anything but sweet. “Who is this? I didn’t know you had a girlfriend,” she commented, tilting her head in fake misunderstanding.
Immediately, both you and Sanji straightened up, shaking your heads quickly.
“No, no, she’s not my girlfriend-”
“He’s not my boyfriend,” you both denied simultaneously.
You quickly looked away from them, hoping to hide the rush of embarrassment that crashed over you and, to be honest, the sting of his quick rejection. It was just another reminder, you thought bitterly, that even though Sanji always acted like a complete gentleman towards you, you weren’t his girlfriend. He was just being nice, like always, and he would never like you how you liked him.
You looked down at your hands, quiet for a moment as you knocked a knuckle against the bar top. “No,” you said after a beat. “We’re not dating.”
The woman blinked, clearly unfazed by your admission, like she expected nothing less. She still had a fake look of curiosity on her pretty face. “Oh, right! Of course not,” she laughed slightly, in a way that made you feel small. “You must be one of the straw-caps then, right?”
“It’s straw-hats, actually,” you bit back, straightening up and turning to face this jerk of a woman, chin up high, sending her what you hoped was one of your meanest stares. This girl could be mean to you all day if she wanted to, you didn’t care, but you’d rather drop dead than to ever let her bad mouth Luffy and the wonderful pirate crew he put together. “And yes, I am one of them. I’m a pirate,” you stated proudly.
Sanji must’ve been drunk or stupid, because he didn’t seem to pick up on this girl’s bad energy. “Don’t you remember, darling,” he started, sending the girl a small smile, “I was telling you about my crewmates?”
“OH right!” She hit her head in an exaggerated manner. “I remember now, pookie. You said there were two girls on your crew, an orange-haired map girl and another one...” she trailed off, tapping her pointer finger on her chin like she was deep in thought. “Oh!” she exclaimed brightly and looked down at you, her smile sweet as candy but her words as sharp as a razor. “You must be the potato girl!”
Whatever air of pseudo-confidence you had was immediately snuffed, her words quickly cutting you down to size. “The- the what?”
“Yeah, don’t you like potatoes or something?” she laughed, acting like it was the stupidest thing she’d ever heard.
And to her credit? It definitely sounded stupid if you didn’t know the context behind the story. You swallowed the lump in your throat, trying to fight the urge to either cry or deck this girl in the jaw over her making fun of such a special moment between you and Sanji.
You opened your mouth, ready to shut her shit down when she beat you to it. The next words out of her mouth immediately sucked the air out of your lungs.
“Or is just because you look like a potato?” she asked, laughing her about ass off as she lightly hit Sanji in the chest, keeping her hand there, expecting him to laugh along with her but Sanji just stiffened at her side.
You, however, were too busy keeping your breathing under control and trying your hardest not to cry to notice Sanji’s reaction, or lack of. You could feel red hot shame bloom across your chest, the heat crawling up your neck and flushing your face as you looked down at the floor.
Normally, another girl calling you ugly would sting, sure, but not cause you to literally break down in tears on the spot. So why now? Deep down, though, you knew exactly why. It was because of Sanji. She had literally called you ugly in front of Sanji, the person you had a major forbidden crush on, and what if Sanji just laughed along and agreed with her? You didn’t know if you’d be able to handle it. If he did, you would have to quit the straw hats because there was no way you could ever look at him again.
Not wanting to wait and see what his reaction would be, you started shaking your head, ready to mutter up some lame excuse to get the hell out of there when you felt an arm snake around your waist and a warm body press against your side, pulling you against them.
“Now, Madam, I don’t think those are the right words to describe the most beautiful woman in all of the four seas now, is it?” a deep, familiar accented voice asked from above you.
Your breath hitched in your throat as you whipped your head up towards the voice with wide eyes, only to see the ever-beautiful Sanji look down at you with a small, soft smile, his eyes full of wonder and another emotion you couldn’t decipher, as you felt his thumb rub small, comforting circles on your right hip.
His look and touch sent shivers down your spine, and you couldn’t tell if he was acting or not. Your heart hammered in your ribcage as you searched his eyes for a lie, but all you could find was the truth, strong and unwavering, staring right back at you.
“I said: is it?” Sanji repeated himself, tearing his eyes away from you, looking straight on at this awful woman with his eyebrows raised slightly, like he was daring her to say something else.
Clearly not expecting Sanji to rebuke her as blatantly as he did, the woman started sputtering. “Well, I- I didn’t mean it like that, Sanji-bear, really-”
The blonde man raised his left hand in the air, immediately silencing her. “Yeah, I gotta be honest- I highly doubt that, sweetheart.”
At his condescending tone, you saw the woman bristle and nearly foam at the mouth, her eyes nearly popping out of their sockets. She huffed, looking back and forth between you both for a moment before scoffing and shaking her head in disbelief, saying, “I knew it. I fucking knew it.” She looked Sanji dead in the eyes, glancing at you, her eyes filled with hatred, before taking a step closer to Sanji, filling in the gap between them, as she whispered something into his left ear before stalking off and leaving the bar without another glance.
You quickly looked up at Sanji as she was whispering into his ear, confusion apparent in all of your features. Whatever she said to him, you couldn’t hear since they were both taller than you and the woman wore the highest heels you’ve ever seen, but whatever words she had spoken had left the chef completely stunned because you felt his body become rigid, the comforting circles his thumb was rubbing on your hip stopped, and you saw the muscles on his face freeze as he kept his stare straight ahead.
“Sanji?” you call hesitantly, instantly forgetting your own muddled emotions as you looked up to your heart’s desire. “Are you ok?”
At the sound of your voice, you felt him relax. He let out a little laugh (it sounded fake to you), as he looked down at you with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Of, of course. I am.” But as quickly as he looked at you, his attention was stolen by the bartender placing your order on the bar in front of you. “Thanks, man,” he called out, removing his arm from around you and stepping away to grab your drink order.
Instantly, you missed the warmth he provided. You felt cold all of a sudden.
You shook your head once, clearing your head of those thoughts. Now wasn’t the time to analyze things like that. “Sanji-”
“How are you feeling?” he asked with his back facing you, beating you to the punch. When he turned to face you, drinks in hand, any trace of inner turmoil was gone. His eyes, instead, showed concern for you. “You know you’re beautiful, right?” he asked softly, his eyes scanning your face before looking back into your eyes.
The look in his eyes nearly took your breath away. For a moment, you had completely forgotten what he was referring to. “Uh, w-what?”
He must’ve mistaken your confusion for disbelief because his next action nearly stopped your heart. “Oh, my love,” he started softly, a small smile tugging on the corner of his lips. He placed the drinks on the bar, freeing up his hands, and placed them on either side of your head, along your jawline, as his thumb rubbed your cheek soothingly, his fingers gently entangled in your hair. Sanji gently tilted your head upwards, so your eyes connected with his, and the look on his face was filled with such tenderness and radiated a warmth that touched your soul. His gorgeous, tanned face filled your entire field of view, and you could feel his minty breath fan your face.
When the hell did he get so close?
You felt your cheeks heating up at the proximity, your eyes tried to look at anything but his crystal-clear blue ones. Your brain was sure to short circuit if you didn’t get ahold of yourself. You were going to do something incredibly stupid if you didn’t get space immediately. “San-”
“Y/n,” he said, his tone soft yet commanding. “Look at me, love.”
Your heart rate skyrocketed and you felt your breathing quicken. God, you could feel yourself getting a panic attack and you didn’t even understand why. There was nothing more you’d rather do more than look at Sanji but you didn’t know if you had the strength to do it.
You placed your hands on top of his wrists, fully intending to peel him off and push him away, mumbling, “Sanji, I can’t-”
“Please.”
In an instant, you looked into his eyes and what you saw nearly made your heart stop. His gaze was so intense, so piercing, his blue eyes seemed like they were staring directly into your heart and soul. Could he feel your rapid pulse through his fingertips?
When you locked eyes with him, you saw his soft smile grow. “You, y/n, are the most gorgeous woman to ever sail the four seas. You are the most beautiful woman in the world, I promise you that.”
With each word out of Sanji’s mouth, you could feel your heart breaking and it was dawning on you as to why.
But Sanji continued, his eyes sparkling. “And I'll be damned if I’d ever let that horrible woman make you feel otherwise. Alright, Missus?”
At the nickname, you let out a shaky breath and quickly blinked back tears. It was right then you knew, you knew it from the depth of your soul, just like you knew for certain that the sky was blue and the earth was round: you loved Sanji. You didn’t just have a crush on him anymore, but you were completely head over heels in love with him.
You swallowed the lump in your throat, which might’ve been your heart, because you realized that even though you loved him, you could never have him. He was your crewmate, your friend, another one of the straw hats. He was someone that you promised yourself you would never cross “the line” for. Who you vowed to yourself that you wouldn’t risk anything for feelings-wise because you didn’t want the rest of the crew to suffer if you both didn’t work out.
But despite all of that, it didn’t make the truth any easier to swallow because now you were stuck. You were stuck with your stupid feelings and all it did was want to make you cry. You should’ve been happy right now at this sudden realization but no, instead all you wanted to do was go hole up in your room and sob.
And besides, Sanji would never return your feelings anyway.
“Y/n?” Sanji repeated, a hint of worry laced in his tone the longer you kept staring at him unblinking.
You quickly blinked, unable to stop a few tears from escaping your eyes, but managed to hold back the rest. You tried your best to fake a smile for him, but you could feel your lips quivering. “Sanji,” you breathed but quickly cleared your throat. “That, that was beautiful.” You looked at him in the eyes. “Thank you.”
At your thanks, Sanji’s whole face lit up and he winked. “Ah, anything for the Missus.”
The blonde cook didn’t make an effort to move, however. He kept his hands on your face and with each stroke of his thumb you felt tingles shoot down into your stomach (and to other inappropriate places), and felt goosebumps erupt across your skin.
You had to get out of here.
Carefully, you squeezed his wrists and slid your hands over his, gently prying them away from you, pulling them down and giving them one last quick squeeze in appreciation before dropping them. “Thank you, Sanji,” you repeated softly. You looked towards the bar, at the two forgotten drinks placed there, because you just couldn’t look at Sanji right now. “I, uh, should go bring these over to Zoro.”
“Of- of course. Right. Mosshead is probably quite pissed off at us but, ah, who cares what he thinks.” Ever the gentleman, Sanji went to reach for them. “Here, let me help you-”
“No!” you quickly intervened, grabbing them like it was a pot of gold. “No, no. I got it. Don’t worry about it. You should, uh, stay here and keep talking to the bartender. I think he was looking for you,” you lied and without waiting for his response, took the drinks off the bar, leaving a crestfallen Sanji standing there, watching you walk to Zoro and then, promptly, out of the nightclub altogether.
As you walked over to your green-haired friend, your legs felt like rubber and that you would collapse at a moment’s notice from the sheer weight of your thoughts. You, however, were so far gone that you completely missed Zoro’s Chesire cat grin.
“You and the waiter seemed pretty cozy over there, huh?” Zoro jabbed, his arms resting on top of the seat cushions and knees spread out like he had no care in the world. “I thought you guys were going to kiss or something for a minute there, but instead-”
“Shut the fuck up, Zoro,” you practically growled at him as you put his beer and your glass on the glass tabletop with much more force than necessary.
The swordsman lifted his hands slightly along with his eyebrows. “Whoa, hey now no need to-”
Instead of taking your seat back and sitting back down, you started walking past him and towards the exit without waiting for his response. “I’m heading back to the ship.”
As Zoro watched you leave, a clearly drunk Usopp slid in right next to him, gnawing on a toothpick, watching you as well. “Daaamn, Zoro,” the slingshot shooter drawled loudly, leaning against his crewmate and completely disregarding the other man’s personal space. “Did you see Sanji and y/n? I thought they were going to- pft, start making out or something!” Usopp exclaimed as he waved his hands in the air, mimicking an explosion and two people kissing. “Do you think they know they like each other?”
Zoro hummed, watching your retreating form and then looking towards the dejected waiter, who looked like a kicked puppy. “I don’t know Usopp,” he replied, leaning forward to grab his beer and take a swing. “But if they don’t tell each other soon I’m going to lose my goddamn mind.”
“Yeahhh,” Usopp agreed, sliding his sunglasses down the bridge of his nose to look at the swordsman better. “You said it- oh! Is this drink taken?” he asked, not waiting for Zoro’s response before taking the beverage and sipping on its straw.
Zoro shook his head with a small smile. Sometimes his friends were too predictable for their own good. He just hoped that you and Sanji would start being predictable soon so you two could finally be together and put everyone out of their misery.

Mortified. That’s how you felt. Still.
Ever since you ‘forfeited’ from finishing your Go Fish card game with Usopp a couple of hours ago, you had taken your glass of water that Sanji had poured for you and boarded up in your shared room with Nami, refusing to come out due to “heat exhaustion”.
Poor Luffy, ever the golden hearted captain, was immediately worried for your wellbeing as soon as he heard that but after multiple reassurances from you and getting up off of your hammock multiple times to prove you were in fact, just fine, he relented from wanting to stop by the nearest island so he could find a doctor for you. Usopp had managed to convince him as well that all you needed was some water, alone time, and that you would be fine by dinnertime.
You rubbed your eyes as you let out a sigh, vowing to yourself that the next time you wanted some time by yourself, you should just take a bath or something, since any other excuse would cause someone on the crew (Luffy) to lose their mind at the thought of someone not feeling well.
You readjusted yourself, sitting more upright, as you downed the last of your water, it being warm by this point since it had been poured by Sanji hours ago.
Sanji. Ugh.
Your heart fluttered once again at the mere thought of him, but that flutter was immediately replaced by a wave of crashing embarrassment at the thought of the afternoon’s sequence of events. What had happened earlier wasn’t even anything that groundbreaking or special, but to you? It was everything. It wasn’t common practice in your life for the object of your affections to be so kind towards you, so thoughtful, to read and anticipate your needs before you even knew they were even there. But Sanji? He was all of that and more. And you didn’t even know him for that long! You’ve all been a part of the straw-hat crew for 5 months at this point and it felt silly to admit to yourself that you had developed a crush on one of your crewmates in that short amount of time.
And having feelings for your crewmate? Someone who you literally couldn’t get away from since you all were trapped on a ship together (not that you would ever want to be away from him or anyone else for that matter, besides Usopp, but still), it felt morally wrong. You guys were all a team. Sure, you all were off to sail around the world and chase dreams, but achieving all of that required teamwork and trust, and that was hard to do if two of those people were caught up with matters of the heart every hour of every day.
Like, what if things didn’t work out in the end? Would you really want to put the crew’s dynamic at stake just because you thought the blonde guy was cute? No, you wouldn’t. It would be selfish so you would never dare to put yourself or Sanji in that position. No matter how much you liked him.
So as much as it pained you, you could never tell Sanji how you feel. You would never cross that line of being a ‘professional pirate’ into something more, like a pirate wife. Or a pirate chef’s wife.
It definitely didn’t help that freaking Usopp of all people on the crew knew about your affections for Sanji. Ugh, you groaned. He was the absolute worst person to know about it too. Why did he have to figure it out? Why did he have to be the one that had put two and two together to equal four? That your random bouts of awkwardness and shyness plus ‘heart eyes’ and blushes whenever Sanji was around equaled to you having a forbidden crush on the crew’s chef? It was embarrassing. And complicated.
He loved to stir the pot too, so whenever he could tease you for it when you both were alone or in front of a clueless Sanji, he would. You remembered the kiss he had shared with Kayla back when the straw-hats had acquired the Going Merry, so you definitely jabbed him right back when you had had enough, since part of you felt guilty for it since Kayla was thousands of miles away and Sanji lived on this ship with you. Your situations were slightly similar but completely different.
Also, completely different in the way that him and Kayla were basically dating at this point, albeit long distance, and had shared a kiss while you could barely sustain eye contact that lasted more than 5 seconds with Sanji.
You were hopeless.
“Knock, knock,” a familiar accented voice came through the closed door. “Y/n? Are you awake?”
"Sanji?” you blurted out in complete surprise.
Shit. You weren’t mentally prepared to see him just yet. At all. You were still replaying the interaction you both had earlier in your head, your overthinking mind going over every minute detail to figure out if Usopp’s careless teasing had given away your affections.
Usopp, you mentally ground out. You were going to kill him. Sanji had never stopped by your room before so what on earth was he doing here now?
Suddenly, a thought struck you like a bolt of lightning and made your stomach drop fifty miles below sea level: if Sanji had specifically stopped by your room just to gently let you down, that no, in fact he did not feel the same way about you, that he only thought of you as a member of the crew and nothing more....then yeah, you were definitely going to kill Usopp and throw him overboard.
Before you could mentally plot out more details on Usopp's murder, the door opened and the straw-hat chef’s blonde head appeared. His eyes quickly scanned Nami’s empty hammock on the room’s left side before turning his head to the right, his blue eyes immediately finding your surprised ones, a (relieved?) smile lighting up his face at the sight of you.
“So, I take it you’re awake?” Sanji asked in a light, teasing tone but not making an effort to move himself away from the doorway.
“Uh, y-eah,” you stuttered out in surprise as you just stared at him dumbfounded. You still couldn’t figure out why he was here.
Sanji continued to lock eyes with you, making your cheeks flush the longer you both stared at each other, and your palms sweat as the silence stretched on, making the tension in the air become thicker by the second. He blinked, his eyes darting to the side in confusion, raising an eyebrow as he asked, “May I come in?”
“OH! Yes, of course- sorry,” you stuttered as you waved him inside, sitting up in your hammock and mentally face palmed yourself. Of course, Sanji was waiting on you to invite him inside. Like always, he was acting like a true gentleman. “Please, come in. Have a seat. Sorry, that was rude of me. Make yourself at home.”
Sanji stood up to his full height and walked into your room with an easy smile and a small laugh, closing the door behind him. “Ah, don’t ever apologize y/n. You could never be rude to me,” Sanji rebuttalled and waved off your apology as he looked around and took in your very plain and basic shared room with Nami.
Your room, or side of the room more specifically, wasn’t much to brag about considering you really didn’t have much to your name but for now, it was home to you. Your side consisted of your hammock, a wooden barrel next to it to act as a makeshift nightstand that housed your only book, a journal, and a lamp, along with an empty wooden crate to act as a makeshift seat and another to hold some of your other clothes and small travel bag. Nami’s side was similar to yours but had a touch more personality as she hung up some maps she found at various markets and drew up herself on her wall.
You swallowed, suddenly feeling a tad self-conscious about the lack of things in your room considering your current guest was dressed, as usual, to the nines in his signature black suit and blue and white striped shirt complete with a skinny black tie. “Sorry for the sad state of my room-”
“Sad?” Sanji stopped admiring your room and snapped his gaze to look at you. His eyebrows pulled together as another confused smile adorned his features. “Why would you say that? Your room isn’t sad, I like it. It’s a reflection of you,” his next words came out softer, “and I think that’s beautiful.”
You could feel heat crawling up your neck at his words as you busied yourself with placing the empty glass in your hand on your barrel nightstand. There was no way Sanji was calling you beautiful, he was just commenting on your room. With Nami. On your shared room that owed any ounce of ‘personality’ to the ship’s navigator because it was obvious you literally brought nothing special to this room whatsoever.
You stopped yourself from spiraling into ‘I don’t bring anything special to the straw-hats, I don’t know why they keep me around’ thoughts because now wasn’t the time to think about any of that. Those dark thoughts were reserved when you couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night.
As you placed the glass on the nightstand, you asked, “So, what brings you all the way to my room? Aren’t you usually prepping for dinner around this time?”
Sanji’s eyes followed your hand and lit up when he saw the sole book on your nightstand. “Oh, a book? I didn’t know you liked to read.” His megawatt smile lit up a couple of notches as his eyes sparkled, he looked like he had just learned one of the universe’s greatest mysteries as he took a seat near you on an empty crate. “What book is that?”
“Oh, that?” You mentally deflated at the fact you now had to tell Sanji about your favorite book, “It’s Pride and Prejudice.”
You weren’t ashamed of having that book specifically, you loved it and it was your favorite book of all time, you had lost count at how many times you had read it at this point, but it was the fact that you now had to share this part of yourself with the guy you fancied. Guys normally scoffed and turned their nose up at romance book and romantic things, so you were bracing for Sanji to scoff and laugh at you like all the other guys did (like even Zoro and Usopp did when they first saw you reading it) but it never came.
Instead, Sanji’s smile remained bright. “Ah, so you’re a lover of classic romances? Pride and Prejudice? Romeo and Juliet?”
Immediately, you smiled, finding yourself instantly comfortable suddenly whenever you got to talk about one of your favorite things. “Absolutely. I don’t think there’s a problem big enough out there that love can’t solve. Family backgrounds? Wealth and status? At the end of the day, none of that stuff matters. What matters is if two people love each other.”
Sanji stayed quiet for a moment, looking into your eyes with a twinkle of an emotion that you couldn’t decipher. It made your heart skip a beat. “Yeah,” he agreed quietly, never breaking eye contact. “I agree.”
You swallowed. “You like this stuff too? Have you read Pride and Prejudice?”
Sanji blinked and that indescribable emotion he had in his eyes was gone. His smile remained, however, and became sheepish as he held up his hands, “Ah ok, you caught me. I’ve never read the full thing, but I know the main parts of the story. My favorite part that I did read though, was the first dinner with Mr. Collins and he complimented the Bennets on their ‘excellent boiled potatoes’.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at that, shaking your head slightly as you teased, “I should’ve known that the chef of the Going Merry’s favorite part of the book is when food is discussed!”
The blonde cook held his hands up again with a good-natured laugh, “Ah, you got me!” His face softened as he asked, “What about you?" He nodded towards the book. "What’s your favorite part?”
You paused for a second as you mulled the question over. “Well, I'm not sure if you know about this part since you never read the book...”
“Try me,” he encouraged softly.
Your face turned to the side, your eyes looking at the wooden wall to your right, unable to bring yourself to look at Sanji as you told him your favorite part of your favorite book. You took a deep breath to steady yourself and calm your nerves, your voice becoming quiet as you told him, “My favorite part is...when Mr. Darcy barges in on Elizabeth for the first time, while she’s at her friend Charlotte’s house writing a letter. He had come to practice ‘conversating’ with her since he admitted that it wasn’t something he was good at and she had told him to practice it. So, Mr. Darcy just barged in and they had one of the most painfully awkward conversations ever...and he did all that just because he loves her. He did something he hated and was bad at, and opened himself up to embarrassment just because he wanted to improve and be better for her. It’s so romantic and beautiful.”
The air was quiet after your mini monologue and for a moment, nothing could be heard except for their quiet breathing and the occasional crash of the ocean from outside your small window.
Part of you worried that your little rambling had bored Sanji, so when you finally looked at him, imagine your surprise when you found him leaning in towards you, hands clasped, elbows resting on his knees and his eyes watching you, completely engaged. It was like he was hanging onto your every word.
Sanji scanned your face for a moment, the corner of his lips curling upwards as he said, “Yeah, you’re right. I’m not familiar with that part in the book,” and before you could open your mouth to bring yourself down, he continued, “but, that doesn’t mean your answer is wrong.” He leaned back and slapped his hands against his thighs, “Hell, it’s a much more insightful answer than mine!” He laughed. “I just liked how they were poking some fun at boiled potatoes.”
You laughed with him because yes, that part in the book also made you laugh as well. But at the mention of food, you realized that you still didn’t know why Sanji was here in the first place. Wasn’t he normally prepping for dinner at this time? He had to be running behind schedule at this point.
“Why are you here, Sanji? Isn’t it almost time for dinner?”
“Yeah, it is actually but I heard you weren’t feeling well so I wanted to check in on you, make sure you’re feeling alright and see if you have any special requests for dinner?”
You couldn’t help the slight smile that overtook your face, trying to hide the blush at the fact that he was kind enough to check in on you and offer to practically be your own personal chef for the evening.
You hummed for a moment, acting like you were deep in thought before asking with a raised eyebrow, "And what would you say if I requested some boiled potatoes?”
The smile that lit up the chef’s face was priceless. He had never looked more beautiful. “To that, I would say ‘Absolutely. If that’s what the missus wants, then that is what the missus will get.’”
Missus. There it was again. You felt all warm inside whenever he called you that, it made you feel like he was your husband and that you were his wife. But that wasn’t the case. Sanji definitely must have called other women that before. You weren’t special to him, he was just being polite.
You swallowed down your emotions, putting your sudden wave of sadness away for later, putting on a small smile. “Then that sounds perfect. I would like to formally request some ‘excellent boiled potatoes’ as a side for dinner, please.”
If Sanji noticed your sudden change in mood, he didn’t show it. Instead, he grinned as he said, “Excellent choice, Madam. Boiled potatoes, coming right up.” As he stood up and made his way towards your door, Sanji did one of the most unexpected things that nearly knocked the wind out of you. With his left hand on the doorknob he said, “And don’t worry, Madam. I’ll sprinkle in a little bit of extra love in there,” he turned and winked at you, “just for you.”
With that, Sanji left your room, gently closing the door behind him, leaving you completely dumbstruck in your room, your mouth agape and body frozen.
Did Sanji just say he loved you?
You shook your head, because there was no way he did, right? He said he’d ‘sprinkle in some extra love’ into your potatoes, not 'I love you". You weren’t a chef, maybe that was a euphemism for something.
You sighed.
Those better be some good boiled potatoes.

go fish!
Tumblr media
so i fell in love with Sanji just like everyone else. i've never seen the one piece anime or read the manga so i'm solely going off of the live action. i had fun writing this and plan to make this a series of some sorts where it's a fem!reader x Sanji moments of awkwardness, fluff, and mutual pining because i love reading that stuff myself. if anyone has any suggestions or requests for this series please leave a comment or send me an ask!
WARNINGS: none
word count: 1.3k
pairing: opla!sanji x reader
summary: reader and Usopp are playing a card game when Sanji finds them. teasing ensues.
prequel part 2 part 3 part 4 masterlist
“Care for a refreshment, Madam?” a smooth, deep familiar voice asked to your left, breaking your concentration on the card game in front of you.
“Hm?” you looked up from the cards in your hand and saw the Going Merry’s own chef looking down at you with a crooked, charming smile as he held a chilled glass bottle of water in his hand. “Oh, hey Sanji,” you greeted quickly with your usual smile as you looked back down at your hand. “What’d you say? Go fish Usopp.”
Your opponent across the barrel from you grumbled as he took the top card off the deck sitting between you both.
“I was just asking if the lovely madam sitting here would like a nice, cold refreshment on this particularly hot day?” Sanji asked again with a hint of amusement, his crooked smile deepening as he watched you study your hand once again.
“’Lovely madam’?” Usopp repeated sarcastically, his eyebrows pulling together. “What about offering her super buff, brave, and heroic opponent an ice-cold beverage instead?”
“Nope,” Sanji corrected, popping the 'p'. “Ladies first Usopp. Always.”
Even after knowing Sanji for a couple of months now, his consistent chivalry always managed to make your heart flutter.
You laughed lightly and couldn’t help but smirk as you said with a matter-of-fact, teasing tone, “Just say you wish you were a girl, Usopp. No judgment here.” You paused for a moment before asking, “You got the five of spades?”
“Now even though I would make an extremely attractive, gorgeous woman, I am a man through and through.” A grin broke out on Usopp’s face as he glanced at his hand and triumphantly called out, “Go fish, y/n.”
“Fair enough,” you hummed as you reached for a card. “And yes Sanji, I would love a glass of cold water. Thank you.” You shot a quick look of gratitude the chef’s way as you took a card from the deck.
Sanji placed the two glasses onto your makeshift barrell-table top he was holding in his left hand and started filling up the glasses with water. “Of course. Anything for the missus.”
Missus. Ugh. It made your heart skip a beat to hear him call you that. But you knew he didn’t really mean anything by it. It was just how Sanji spoke, forever the gentleman.
“Oof. If you keep sweet talking like that Sanji, you’re going to even make me blush, just like y/n,” Usopp joked.
Your eyes widened as your eyes snapped to look at your dumbass crewmate and friend sitting across from you. “I- I am not blushing Usopp!” God, if you both were using a real table instead of a barrel right now you would’ve broken his shine with your foot. You really weren’t blushing before but Usopp’s stupid comment definitely made your cheeks heat up now. “It’s the heat,” you hissed.
“’Heat’,” he mocked with air quotes and snorted. “Right.”
“I-” before you could defend yourself, Sanji spoke up.
“Actually,” the blonde chef chimed in with a light laugh as he filled the second glass, “that’s why I came over in the first place. You were looking a little flushed y/n, so I thought you guys could use a cold drink.”
Sanji’s words caused both you and Usopp to look up from your cards simultaneously, making eye contact with each other. A mischievous grin started to form on Usopp’s face as he saw the blush deepen on your face. You quickly looked back to your hand, suddenly finding the eight of clovers card extremely interesting.
Sanji saw you looking flushed? He saw you? From across the deck? From inside the kitchen’s window? He was watching you play cards? The thought of Sanji watching you when you didn’t expect him to made your stomach erupt in butterflies, and it certainly didn’t make your stupid little crush on him go away. Just the opposite. In fact, it just fueled your delusional fantasy even more.
And it certainly didn’t help that the only person who knew about your crush on the head chef just so happened to have a big mouth and loved to tease you about it any chance he got. And that he was sitting right across from you right now, watching all of this unfold right in front of him.
“Oh? So you were watching y/n and I play cards out here?” Usopp innocently asked his blonde crewmate, but you knew better. There wasn’t an ounce of true curiosity in his tone whatsoever.
“Yeah, from the kitchen,” Sanji answered casually as he recapped the glass water bottle.
“Usopp,” you warned.
“And you said that she looked ‘flushed’?” Usopp asked, quirking a brow at the end of his question as he turned his gaze from you to Sanji.
Sanji blinked in confusion, his eyebrows knitting together for a second before looking down at his crewmate. “Yeah...” he said slowly before continuing, “Her cheeks looked a little pink so I figured-”
“Oh?” Usopp asked, his voice becoming louder. “You noticed the color of her cheeks, from that far away?”
“Usopp,” you hissed louder but it fell on deaf ears. Once your friend got on a roll, there was little anyone could do about it. Especially when it came to teasing you about your feelings for Sanji.
“Yeah,” Sanji replied to Usopp’s question with a confused smile. “What are you-”
“GO FISH!” you blurted out loudly, cutting Sanji off and having both men turn their eyes towards you.
“Huh?” Usopp blinked his eyes at you, suddenly remembering the game in front of him. “But I didn’t even ask you anything y/n. And you just drew a card, so it’s your turn to ask me.”
You let out a quiet sigh of relief at the fact that Usopp stopped grilling Sanji with all of those embarrassing questions right in front of you....even though you couldn’t help but perk up at the fact that Sanji in fact had been watching you from the kitchen, and that he was sweet enough to bring you (and Usopp) some water.
“Well, I tried,” you shrugged and lied, “but you just kept yapping so you didn’t hear me. Do you have the Queen of hearts?”
Usopp studied you for a brief moment before looking at his cards, smirking to himself. “You know y/n, it’s funny you asked about the Queen of hearts,” he said as he plucked the requested card from his hand and reached out to give it to you, “since you make heart eyes yourself whenever you look at-”
“GOOD game Usopp!” you practically yelled as you threw your cards down onto the barrel and stood up, hoping your outburst drowned out the name Usopp was about to so stupidly blurt out. You shook his free hand with both of yours as you said, “You totally win my friend.”
“What?” Sanji laughed slightly as he watched you and Usopp shake hands. The poor guy was as confused as ever. “But the game isn’t over.”
You looked Usopp dead in the eye as tightened your grip on his hand. “Oh no, it’s over. He definitely won.”
Yeah, he won alright. He won the game of making your life a living hell and embarrassing you in front of Sanji. He won the gold medal in that game.
“I sure did,” Usopp agreed triumphantly, putting his cards down.
You dropped his hand and took the glass of cold water that Sanji had so generously poured, the cold glass making you feel better already. “Thank you for this Sanji. I think I’ll go enjoy this on my hammock inside.”
You couldn’t bear to look at Sanji, feeling humiliated for no reason with your face on fire, you stepped away from the barrel sipping your water as you made your way across the deck towards the ship’s living quarters.
“Yeah, that’s a good idea y/n!” Usopp called, giddy from the high that could only come from successfully teasing a friend. “Maybe that’ll help calm down your flushed face!”
Before stepping inside, you flipped off a laughing Usopp, completely missing the brief look of disappointment in Sanji’s eyes as he watched you go.

“We should get married.”
The question in and of itself is a strange one, made more so for the fact that it’s coming from Zoro of all people – and the fact that he’s asking you in the middle of a fight. Your back is pressed against his, the heat of his skin seeping into your clothes – and you wonder if he’s gotten hit in the head too many times. Or thrown through too many things – too much of something.
“Are you seriously saying that right now?” Your tone is incredulous as you swing your weapon, scowling as you watch another enemy drop with a cry and a splatter of blood. “We’re a little busy right now, aren’t we?”
Zoro grins, expression manic with the deepened shadows of his face from his bandana, adjusting to place the hilt of Wadou Ichimonji in his mouth. “Is that a yes?”
You have the brief moment of considering knocking Zoro out for your opponent – clearly his daily naps out in the sun have baked his brain more than you previously thought. “No!”
The question doesn’t turn out to be borne from a brain-based injury flaring up, because Zoro doesn’t let the subject go. He bides his time, waiting about two weeks from when he first asked before he tries again.
This time, the stars are a witness to his buffoonery – now fueled by the bottles of sake he seems to have squirreled away everywhere on the Thousand Sunny. You watch as he tips the bottle to his lips, the brief shimmer of liquid that beads at his lips before it disappears as he swallows.
“We should get married,” he says, and this time, you scoff. It isn’t one of disdain, rather of amusement as you wait for the alcohol induced flush to rise to his cheeks. “‘m serious, you know.”
“No,” you counter softly as you scoot closer to him, reaching up to wipe a drop of sake from the corner of his lips and bring it to your own for a taste. As ever, his own choices in alcohol seem to be tailored for him and him alone – sake still isn’t your thing. “You’re drunk.”
Zoro hums, eye flicking from the night sky above to you. “Is that a yes?”
You press your lips to his warm cheek. “Ask me again when you’re sober.”
The third time that he asks, he’s waited so long that you’ve almost forgotten that he ever asked in the first place. After all, Roronoa Zoro has never seemed like someone interested in the intimate entanglement of marriage – you have absolutely no clue what has possessed him to suddenly ask you with this kind of tenacity.
“We should get married,” he says, and you resist the urge to sigh as you stare at him, his head pillowed against your thigh. Below the shade of Nami’s tangerine trees, you can hear Luffy’s bright laughter intermingled with Usopp and Franky’s.
This time you aren’t in the middle of a fight, nor is he drunk. This time, you take a moment to study his face, the dapple of sunlight through waxy green leaves, the scent of citrus in the air. You love him, you’re sure of that – as sure as you’ve been of anything in your life.
“We’re pirates,” you answer, tapping your fingers against his cheek in an echoed rhythm of one of Brooke’s songs from the night before. “Pirates don’t get married.”
“Sure they do.” He’s watching you now, with the kind of intensity he usually only reserves for battle, and you look away. “Captains can officiate marriages. I asked Robin about it.”
You blink and let your attention shift to Luffy for a minute – you love your captain, you do. But the idea of him being serious about much of anything beyond what matters to him (food, his crew’s safety, finding the One Piece – in that order) makes you giggle. You can’t imagine him officiating something like a marriage.
“What if I want a ceremony?” Your fingers find his cropped green hair, stroking gently across his scalp. “Those are expensive.”
He shrugs. “We’d find a way. I’m sure Nami would help.”
Your lips curve in an amused smile for a moment before it dims at the edges. “It’d be dangerous,” you point out, and he answers with a short bark of laughter.
“Not any more than shit we’ve already faced.”
“Rings?”
“We don’t need that fancy stuff.”
Your smile fades completely, hand stilling in his hair. “Why do you think we should get married?”
There must be an edge to your tone now, because Zoro refocuses on you, all signs of mirth gone. “Because we love each other, right? Sounds like the next logical step.”
Your gaze hardens. “So you’re asking because you think we should? Or because you want to marry me?” He sits up, and you get to your feet.
“Is that a no?” he asks, and you pause.
“Ask me again when you figure things out, Zoro.”
“Marry me.”
This time, his voice is quiet. Soft and vulnerable – for the late hour or the intimacy of his bare skin against yours, you aren’t sure. His hand drifts up and down your back, counting the bumps of your spine over and over.
You shift against him, face nestled to rest against his chest. “Zoro–”
“I’ve thought about it,” he cuts you off. “So just be quiet and listen, okay?” You don’t say a word, waiting for him to continue on his own. “I don’t want to marry you just because I think that I should, I want us to get married because you...you mean a lot to me. You’re important to me, and I –” He pauses, struggling. This kind of thing is not Zoro’s forte, you both know that – but after a moment, he resumes. “I don’t see myself being like this with anyone but you. I don’t want to be like this with anyone but you. Just want you.” A moment of silence, hearts beating in tandem.
You move, adjusting enough that you can look at him properly, the gleam of moonlight against his face. And you kiss him. Slow and sweet, eyes sliding shut as you linger for as long as you can before you pull away.
“Marry me,” he repeats.
This time, you don’t squawk at him like he’s crazy. You don’t accuse him of being drunk, don’t deflect him for fear that he’s doing it because he thinks he should, not that he wants to. This time, you smile.
“Yes,” you answer. “I’ll marry you.”

"they're cheating, you know" ft. zoro and nami
Tumblr media
It was safe to say Zoro’s pride was damaged by the third round in this staring contest. You just had this little conniving smirk on your face that amped up his determination each time he caught it.
“Again,” he demanded, blinking fast to quell the burn of his eyes.
This time you laughed. You actually laughed at him. “Zoro, it’s time to eat.”
He shook his head the moment you said his name so dismissively. “I’m not eating till I defeat you.”
You stood and grabbed him by the back of his shirt, tugging with all your might. “It’s a stupid staring contest. C’mon.”
Zoro heaved his broad shoulders and trudged after you, purposefully choosing a seat across from you at dinner. You hadn’t had a chance to take a bite when your eyes darted up and caught his eye. Zoro glared, brows drawn and jaw set, the challenge evident.
Setting aside your fork with a sigh, you propped up your elbows and pillowed your chin on folded hands. Your smirk only egged him on further. “If you insist, moss for brains.”
Conversation floated over your heads. You teased him unfairly, raising your brows and squinting them fast, all without ever blinking. Zoro should’ve known this was a losing battle.
Two minutes in Zoro’s eyes fluttered, his fist hitting his knee. “Dammit.”
A round of congratulations went straight to your head before crashing to the ground when Nami rolled her eyes. “They’re cheating, you know.”
You shot her a glare but it was too late. Zoro perked up instantly. “Huh?”
“Their contacts—Ow!” Nami kicked your shin back even harder, her lips pursed and resolve formed. “They’re wearing contacts, Zoro. They’ve got infinite moisture.”
You deflated with a huff, slumping over and picking at your plate. “You’re no fun.”
Meanwhile, Zoro’s jaw was slack, his narrowed eyes accusing as he stared daggers into your head. He scoffed and slouched back when all you did was stick out your tongue. “A whole day, wasted.”
“It’s not a total waste,” Nami offered. “You’re pretty good now. Let’s you and me have a staring contest.”
He got in position immediately, shutting his eyes and opening them sharply as Nami met his stare languidly.
Poor Zoro. It took everything in you to keep from laughing; Nami wore contacts too.

Kinda criminal that he has a transformation power-up that color coordinates any outfit as a side effect, and the anime just… keeps him in bleached jorts.
