Smb Client

The SMB client file system is based on the SMB protocol version 2.1 and version 3.0.2. You can use the SMB client file system to access files on an SMB server. The SMB server is a server that runs Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2016 operating system. In each of these server operating system types, a directory can be exported as a share.

The Server Message Block Protocol (SMB Protocol) is a client-server communication protocol used for sharing access to files, printers, serial ports, and data on a network. It can also carry transaction protocols for authenticated inter-process communication. In short, the SMB protocol is a way for computers to talk to each other.

Smbclient is samba client with an 'ftp like' interface. It is a useful tool to test connectivity to a Windows share. It can be used to transfer files, or to look at share names. In addition, it has a nifty ability to 'tar' (backup) and restore files from a server to a client and visa versa.

May 04, 2021 OpenMediaVault is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB /CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. Thanks to the modular design of the framework it can be enhanced via plugins. An SMB client program for UNIX machines is included with the Samba distribution. It provides an ftp-like interface on the command line. You can use this utility to transfer files between a Windows 'server' and a Linux client. Most Linux distributions also now include the useful smbfs package, which allows one to mount and umount SMB shares.

I realize this is not a very exciting post, especially compared to my other wonderful musing on this site, but I felt I really had to write it to share the pain!

A colleague I work with needed to enable this feature on an Azure Windows Server 2019 machine to communicate with some old system that only supports Server Message Block version 1 (SMB1). Easy enough to add that right?

Trying the installation

Let’s first get some information about the feature:

Notice the State property? The feature is disabled and the payload (installation files) are not on the Azure virtual machine.

Downloading Windows Server 2019

I downloaded Windows Server 2019 (November 2019 version) from https://my.visualstudio.com/Downloads?q=SQL%20Server%202019. I am not sure if you can use the evaluation version of Windows Server 2019 because I did not try that. I downloaded the ISO to the Azure virtual machine.

Mount ISO and copy install.wim

On recent versions of Windows, you can right click an ISO and mount it. In the mounted ISO, search for install.wim and copy that file to a folder on your C: disk like c:wim. Under c:wim, create a folder called mount and run the following command:

The contents of install.wim is now available in c:wimmount. Now don’t try to enable the feature by pointing to the sources with the -source parameter of Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature. It will not work yet!

Patch the mounted files

The Azure Windows Server 2019 image (at time of writing, June 2020) has a cumulative update installed: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4551853/windows-10-update-kb4551853. For this installatin to work, I needed to download the update from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/home.aspx and put it somewhere like c:patches.

Now we can update the mounted files offline with the following command:

It will take a while to update! You need to do this because the files mounted from the downloaded ISO do not match the version of the Windows Server 2019 image. Without this update, the installation of the SMB1 feature will not succeed.

Enable the SMB1 feature

Mac 5 apple. Now we can enable the feature with the following command:

You will need to reboot. After rebooting, from a PowerShell prompt run the command below to check the installation:

The State property should say: Enabled

I checked the wifi, closed and reloaded tabs, did updates, etc. Nothing helped, and I was feeling like a I might have a serious problem. Mac OS 8.5 is an operating system from Apple Computer. It is part of the Classic Mac OS family. Apple advertised this operating system as 'faster than Windows NT'. Released on October 17, 1998, Mac OS 8.5 was the first version of the Mac OS to run solely on Macintosh computers equipped with a PowerPC processor, as such it removed some but not all of the Motorola.

To use any of these key combinations, press and hold the keys immediately after pressing the power button to turn on your Mac, or after your Mac begins to restart. Keep holding until the described behavior occurs.

Command-S: Start up in single-user mode. Disabled in macOS Mojave or later, or when using a firmware password.

T: Start up in target disk mode. Disabled when using a firmware password.

Command-V: Start up in verbose mode. Disabled when using a firmware password.

Eject (⏏) or F12 or mouse button or trackpad button: Eject removable media, such as an optical disc. Disabled when using a firmware password.

If a key combination doesn't work

If a key combination doesn't work at startup, one of these these solutions might help:

Be sure to press and hold all keys in the combination together, not one at a time.

Shut down your Mac. Then press the power button to turn on your Mac. Then press and hold the keys as your Mac starts up.

Wait a few seconds before pressing the keys, to give your Mac more time to recognize the keyboard as it starts up. Some keyboards have a light that flashes briefly at startup, indicating that the keyboard is recognized and ready for use.

If you're using a wireless keyboard, plug it into your Mac, if possible. Or use your built-in keyboard or a wired keyboard. If you're using a keyboard made for a PC, such as a keyboard with a Windows logo, try a keyboard made for Mac.

If you're using Boot Camp to start up from Microsoft Windows, set Startup Disk preferences to start up from macOS instead. Then shut down or restart and try again.

An anti-spyware and anti-virus software program, Adaware Antivirus, according to its developer, detects and removes malware, spyware and adware, computer viruses, dialers, Trojans, bots, rootkits, data miners,[citation needed], parasites, browser hijackers and tracking components.[9]

History[edit]

Adaware antivirus was originally developed, as Ad-Aware, in 1999 to highlight web beacons inside of Internet Explorer.[citation needed] On many websites, users would see a tiny pixelated square next to each web beacon, warning the user that the computer's IP address and other non-essential information was being tracked by this website. Over time, Ad-Aware added the ability to block those beacons, or ads.

In the 2008 Edition, Lavasoft bundled Ad-Aware Pro and Plus for the first time with an antivirus scanner,[10] which used the Avira engine[11]and this arrangement continued for a few years.[12] Starting with Ad-Aware version 10, the Bitdefender antivirus engine was used instead.[13][14][15]

Reliability[edit]

According to PC World Magazine, an older version of Ad-Aware, the Anniversary Edition, could locate only 83.6% of malware in a comparative test carried out by the security firm AV-TEST.[16] However, it stated that no such tests have been run on the newest version. Neil J. Rubenking at PCMag performed a lab test on version 8.3, where Ad-Aware scored 9.2 points, beating the previous top score of 9.1.[17]

Market share[edit]

In July 2013, Adaware Antivirus Free was listed as having been downloaded a total of 450 million times from the Lavasoft site, including over 387 million times from Download.com as of December 2014.[18] According to OPSWAT, in January 2015, Ad-Aware had less than 1% of market share globally.[19] Paid versions of the product are being competed from low-cost or free products, such as Microsoft Security Essentials.[16]

Controversies[edit]

The company was acquired in January 2011, as Lavasoft, by the Solaria Fund, a private equity fund,[5] front for Daniel Assouline and Michael Dadoun, key people of UpClick and Interactive Brands.[20] SC Magazine reported that Lavasoft had been acquired by the same entrepreneurs who have been accused of selling software that is available for free to unwitting users under the guise of premium support,[21] including the free version of Lavasoft's security program prior to acquiring the company itself.[6] Security consultant Dancho Danchev has documented this controversy.[22]

Additionally, Danchev has reported in 2013 that Lavasoft was used to hide hard-to-uninstall programs into third-party software to trick the users in installing them, like in the K-Lite Codec Pack, and the Lavasoft Web Companion changed your browser without given permission. In February 2015, it was reported by CERT Coordination Center, that a new security feature in Ad-Aware Web Companion was implemented with Komodia SSL Digestor, one of Komodia's public SDKs, the company behind the Superfish security incident in Lenovo machines.[24][25][26]

If you've upgraded to macOS Mojave or later, follow these steps to keep it up to date:

Find an Apple Store and shop for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and more. Sign up for Today at Apple programs. Or get support at the Genius Bar. The Mac Shop Inc. The Mac Shop Inc. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates.

If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them. Or click ”More info” to see details about each update and select specific updates to install.

When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, iTunes, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and FaceTime.

To find updates for iMovie, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and other apps that were downloaded separately from the App Store, open the App Store on your Mac, then click the Updates tab.

To automatically install macOS updates in the future, including apps that were downloaded separately from the App Store, select ”Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.

How to get updates for earlier macOS versions

If you're using an earlier macOS, such as macOS High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, or earlier,* follow these steps to keep it up to date:

Open the App Store app on your Mac.

Click Updates in the App Store toolbar.

Use the Update buttons to download and install any updates listed.

When the App Store shows no more updates, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are up to date. That includes Safari, iTunes, iBooks, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and FaceTime. Later versions may be available by upgrading your macOS.

To automatically download updates in the future, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click App Store, then select ”Download newly available updates in the background.” Your Mac will notify you when updates are ready to install.

If you're in the App Store on any of your devices and see the download button near an app, you already bought or downloaded that app. When you tap or click the download button , the app downloads to your device again, but you are not charged again. You can also see a list of apps that you purchased and redownload them.

How to buy apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Tap the App Store app on your Home screen.

Browse or search for the app that you want to download, then tap the app.

Tap the price or tap Get. You might need to sign in with your Apple ID. If you find a game that says Arcade, subscribe to Apple Arcade to play the game.

What mac laptop to buy. After your app finishes downloading, you can move it to a different spot on your Home screen. Apps stay up-to-date by default, but you can learn more about updating apps.

You can make additional purchases within some apps. If you set up Family Sharing, you can use Ask to Buy so that kids must get permission before they make in-app purchases. Learn more about in-app purchases.

If an app is sold with an iMessage app or sticker pack, you can open it in Messages.

How to buy apps on your Apple Watch

With watchOS 6, you can download apps directly from the App Store on your Apple Watch. You can also add apps to your Apple Watch from your iPhone.

Given your Mac isn’t new and is filled with data, you will probably need enough free space on your Mac. This includes not just space for the OS itself but also space for other applications and your user data. Normally, it is assumed that updating OS is a one-way road. That’s why going back to a past Apple OS version is problematic. The main challenge is to download the OS installation file itself, because your Mac may already be running a newer version. If you succeed in downloading the OS installation, your next step is to create a bootable USB or DVD and then reinstall the OS on your computer.

How to download older Mac OS X versions via the App Store

If you once had purchased an old version of Mac OS X from the App Store, open it and go to the Purchased tab. There you’ll find all the installers you can download. However, it doesn’t always work that way. The purchased section lists only those operating systems that you had downloaded in the past. But here is the path to check it:

Click the App Store icon.

Click Purchases in the top menu.

Scroll down to find the preferred OS X version.

Click Download.

This method allows you to download Mavericks and Yosemite by logging with your Apple ID — only if you previously downloaded them from the Mac App Store.

Without App Store: Download Mac OS version as Apple Developer

If you are signed with an Apple Developer account, you can get access to products that are no longer listed on the App Store. If you desperately need a lower OS X version build, consider creating a new Developer account among other options. The membership cost is $99/year and provides a bunch of perks unavailable to ordinary users.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. Newer versions are not available because starting Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.7, the App Store has become the only source of updating Apple OS versions.

Purchase an older version of Mac operating system

You can purchase a boxed or email version of past Mac OS X directly from Apple. Both will cost you around $20. For the reason of being rather antiquated, Snow Leopard and earlier Apple versions can only be installed from DVD.

“I can’t download an old version of Mac OS X”

If you have a newer Mac, there is no physical option to install Mac OS versions older than your current Mac model. For instance, if your MacBook was released in 2014, don’t expect it to run any OS released prior of that time, because older Apple OS versions simply do not include hardware drivers for your Mac.

But as it often happens, workarounds are possible. There is still a chance to download the installation file if you have an access to a Mac (or virtual machine) running that operating system. For example, to get an installer for Lion, you may ask a friend who has Lion-operated Mac or, once again, set up a virtual machine running Lion. Then you will need to prepare an external drive to download the installation file using OS X Utilities.

After you’ve completed the download, the installer should launch automatically, but you can click Cancel and copy the file you need. Below is the detailed instruction how to do it.

STEP 3. Install older OS X onto an external drive

The following method allows you to download Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.

Start your Mac holding down Command + R.

Prepare a clean external drive (at least 10 GB of storage).

Within OS X Utilities, choose Reinstall OS X.

Select external drive as a source.

Enter your Apple ID.

Now the OS should start downloading automatically onto the external drive. After the download is complete, your Mac will prompt you to do a restart, but at this point, you should completely shut it down. Now that the installation file is “captured” onto your external drive, you can reinstall the OS, this time running the file on your Mac.

Boot your Mac from your standard drive.

Connect the external drive.

Go to external drive > OS X Install Data.

Locate InstallESD.dmg disk image file — this is the file you need to reinstall Lion OS X. The same steps are valid for Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

How to downgrade a Mac running later macOS versions

RAR Expander is another frontend which uncompresses the RAR archives on Mac OS X. RAR Expander is based on the official 'unrar' library which is provided by its developer as a command line application which makes it rather unusable. These kind of programs fill in the gap between the existence of the RAR format and the lack of GUI (graphical user interface) application from the RAR producer. The application provides you an easy to use interface. You need to provide an input archive by using the dedicated item from the File menu which triggers the whole process. The uncompressing action depends on your CPU power and disk speed. Anyway, RAR Expander did its job very well. I provided a large archive with many items within and everything went fine. It supports as input both single-volume or multi-volume RAR archives. The application is also compatible with the password protected archives. The functionality of RAR Expander can be extended with the built in AppleScript support. The producer provides you some example scripts in order to try this functionality. The 'Preferences' panel is simple and efficient. You can set up a destination path by using the source's path, a fixed location, or you can let the application to ask you every time you uncompress an archive. You can also use the 'Create Surrounding Folder in Destination' settings which is very useful especially when the archive contains many files, but it doesn't have its own root directory. Pluses: simple and efficient interface, AppleScript support, multi-volume and password protected archives support. Drawbacks / flaws: it doesn't have a drop zone which can trigger the uncompressing process. In conclusion: this is a very good front end for RAR uncompressing and a little bit more usable than UnRarX which does the same job but in a little bit different mode.

Use Launchpad to delete an app

Launchpad offers a convenient way to delete apps that were downloaded from the App Store.

To open Launchpad, click it in the Dock or open it from your Applications folder. You can also pinch closed with your thumb and three fingers on your trackpad.

If you don't see the app in Launchpad, type its name in the search field at the top of the screen. Or swipe right or left with two fingers on your trackpad to show the next or previous page.

Press and hold the Option (⌥) key, or click and hold any app until the apps jiggle.

Click next to the app that you want to delete, then click Delete to confirm. The app is deleted immediately. Apps that don't show either didn't come from the App Store or are required by your Mac. To delete an app that didn't come from the App Store, use the Finder instead.

Mac App Store is the simplest way to find and download apps for your Mac. To download apps from the Mac App Store, you need a Mac with OS X 10.6.6 or later.

Locate the app in the Finder. Most apps are in your Applications folder, which you can open by clicking Applications in the sidebar of any Finder window. Or use Spotlight to find the app, then press and hold the Command (⌘) key while double-clicking the app in Spotlight.

Drag the app to the Trash, or select the app and choose File > Move to Trash.

If you're asked for a user name and password, enter the name and password of an administrator account on your Mac. This is probably the name and password you use to log in to your Mac.

To delete the app, choose Finder > Empty Trash.
